When Reid, his wife, and their three children moved from America to Japan, the family quickly became accustomed to the surface differences between the two countries. In Japan, streets don't have names, pizza comes with seaweed sprinkled on top, and businesswomen in designer suits and Ferragamo shoes go home to small concrete houses whose washing machines are outdoors because there's no room inside. But over time Reid came to appreciate the deep cultural differences, helped largely by his courtly white-haired neighbor Mr. Matsuda, who personified ancient Confucian values that are still dominant in Japan. Respect, responsibility, hard work--these and other principles are evident in Reid's witty, perfectly captured portraits, from that of the school his young daughters attend, in which the students maintain order and scrub the floors, to his depiction of the corporate ceremony that welcomes new employees and reinforces group unity. Despite setbacks, the economic "miracles" achieved by many Asian countries in the latter 20th century have been impressive. This entertaining and thoughtful book invites the reader to consider East Asia's other miracle: its dramatically low rates of crime, divorce, drug abuse, and other social ills. T.R. Reid, an NPR commentator and former Tokyo bureau chief for the Washington Post, lived in Japan for five years, and he draws on this experience to show how the countries of East Asia have built modern industrial societies characterized by the safest streets, the best schools, and the most stable families in the world.

Reid credits Asia's success to the ethical values of Chinese philosopher Confucius, born in 551 B.C., who taught the value of harmony and the importance of treating others decently. This is not a new perception--Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore and others have rather heavy-handedly invoked it to claim moral superiority over the West--but the author's vivid anecdotes strengthen its relevance. Public messages constantly remind Asian citizens of their responsibilities to society. To enhance a sense of belonging, civic ceremonies encourage individuals' allegiance to a greater good; across Japan, for example, April 1 is Nyu-Sha-Shiki day, when corporations officially welcome new employees, most of whom remain loyal to their company for life. In this breezy homily, Reid, an NPR commentator who was the Washington Post's Tokyo bureau chief for five years, offers a look at what he calls Asia's "social miracle" (as opposed to its once vaunted economic growth). The nations of East Asia, he reports, have "the safest streets, the strongest families, and the best schools in the world." Along with their enviably low rates of crime, divorce, unwed motherhood and vandalism, countries like Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand boast a burgeoning middle class, a general aura of civility and a more egalitarian distribution of wealth than the U.S. enjoys. Like many other Asia watchers, Reid attributes this social cohesiveness to a shared set of core values?discipline, loyalty, hard work, a focus on education, group harmony, etc.?that he traces back to the Confucian classics. Yet Reid, now the Post's London bureau chief, readily admits that the East Asian model of Confucian prosperity has glaring flaws: most cities he visited were drab and ugly; Singapore is a "self-righteous and thoroughly intolerant place controlled by a small clique." Reid, who transplanted his family of five from a small Colorado town to Tokyo, serves up amusing anecdotes and cross-cultural observations (his two daughters enrolled in a Japanese public school), but his report reads like one long radio spiel and covers well-trod terrain. After gently berating Westerners for more than 200 pages, he gets to eat his rice cake and have it, too: Confucian values and our own Judeo-Christian morality, he concludes, are basically the same, differing mainly in nuance. He contrasts Asia's ways with the West's in an effort to explain why the United States in particular does not measure up to the East on social stability indicators such as violent crime, theft, and single parenthood. Reid gives modern Asian trends a historical basis, with particularly keen insights into European imperialism's legacy there. Confucius's life and subsequent influence in both the East and West are illuminated. More Nihonjinron

The author seems to have done little investigation into all of the forces at work in Japanese society. He simply regurgitates the Nihonjinron stereotypes that make discourse on Japan all the more difficult.

Low crime? Sure. On the other hand did he once mention the abhorrent practices of police brutality, forced confessions, broken kneecaps and busted skulls, 98% conviction rates, no habeas corpus, fudging of crime statistics and prison conditions that essentially amount to death sentences?

Low divorce rate? Until recently women were not entitled to a dime of their husbands money upon divorce. Now that they are, divorce rates are skyrocketing.

Contrary to what the author claims, Japan is not a homogeneous and harmonious society as any educated sociologist specializing in Japan knows. There are very distinct regional cultures, generational differences and dialects which greatly influence people's eating habits, language, thought patterns, housing styles, culturally influenced behavior etc...

There are great income and educational disparities. Minority, ethnic and gender issues DO exist however they often do not receive the attention from the media that they might elsewhere. One reason may be that Japan's freedom of the press is very low in comparison with other developed nations and groups fighting hard battles for recognition and rights are too often swept under the rug and ignored.

Any half-educated economist could tell you the real ECONOMIC factors that were behind Japan's boom and why it was not based upon Confucianism and "Asian Values". Lifetime employment is dying because companies found out the hard way that it does not work. There have been massive layoffs and a growing unemployment rate.

I could go on for pages citing realities and facts that contradict all of Reid's laughable stereotypes.

Asia has just as many problems as the west. They are equally as complex and difficult to solve. There is no Confucian quick-fix and anyone who says there is is seriously deluded.

Before making sweeping generalizations about the 120 million varied and diverse inhabitants of the islands of Japan, Reid needs to take a closer look at not only the omote (surface), tatemae (facade), and soto (outward) phenomenon of Japanese society (already covered in Japanese and foreign media ad nauseam), but its more intricate ura (undersurface), honne (true intentions), and uchi (inner) undercurrents.

If you are looking for a real balanced and objective view of Japanese society that neither overly-praises or degrades it, check out Yoshio Sugimoto's "An Introduction to Japanese society" which is a work that is actually based in reliable evidence, research, and solid conclusions.

Entertaining but Superficial Cross-Cultural Study

This is a mostly entertaining and enlightening study from Reid, a foreign correspondent who has lived in Japan and traveled throughout Asia. Reid's concern is not the economic success of East Asia, but what he calls the "social miracle." This would be the great civility, politeness, high educational standards, low crime, and all-around successful social stability of Eastern Asian nations. Reid cites the deep cultural influences of Confucianism as the key to this success. Examples are the Confucian ideals of community, shame, and encouragement, which all contrast directly with the Western ideals of individuality, guilt, and punishment. Reid delivers these revelations in a very enlightening fashion and his writing is quite enjoyable, especially when talking about his Tokyo neighbor, the immensely polite and courteous Matsuda-san. However, Reid also learns that the most basic Confucian tenets of hard work and virtue are also core Western tenets, and that the West would be greatly improved by a return to those values. The main problem here is Reid's quite superficial interpretations of both Eastern and Western societies - he often talks like a sociologist but clearly isn't. In Japan especially, Reid probably saw mostly the politeness that the natives save for visitors, with little or no direct experience of real social problems. The book ends with very flimsy solutions, mostly concerning abstract concepts like morality, for the West to integrate Eastern concepts to everyone's social benefit. So beware of these superficialities in this otherwise enjoyable study of cultures that are both vastly different, but more alike than you might think.

No, an old Japanese guy lives next door.

This is one of those books that is hard to review, particularly in terms of stars. To me it teeters on the edge of three stars to four. Three seems harsh, but in ways appropriate.
In "Confucius Lives Next Door" T.R. Reid attempts to expose and explain East Asia's 'second miracle'. The first miracle being the enormous economic gains of the last half-century that started in Japan and now encompass most of the Pacific side of that continent. The second miracle, in Reid's view, is the social stability, low crime rate, and overall quality of life that can be found throughout East Asia. Boiling a complex issue that spans billions of people, thousands of years, dozens of languages and scores of cultures, he concludes that Confucius is to blame.
If that sounds overly simplistic, it is because it is; and inherently that is the problem with the book. Once again here we have a person trying to explain another culture(s) in simplistic historical solutions that fit many and divergent facets of a large swath of people.
Yet, in certain ways Reid is on to something. Just as Western thinking finds its philosophical underpinnings in the influence of Plato, with a liberal sprinkling of hundreds of thinkers along the way, Asia -- particularly countries historically influenced by China -- owe the core of their philosophical and social thinking to good old Confucius, with a liberal sprinkling of hundreds along the way. That much is good. Reid had me at the Plato-Confucius comparison, and his chapter about the life of Confucius was educational. Most of his ideas appear to have been instigated by conversations with his next-door neighbor, Mr. Matsuda, who seems to be the wizened neighbor we all wish we had. But in this book I fear Reid has ordered more lemon chicken than he can eat in one sitting. His examples mostly draw upon his experiences from living in Japan for five years, and from examples gleaned from second-hand sources about other Asian countries. If these are meant to be end-all examples, then they do not work. Though I also feel that Reid was using the trips to an elementary school and to the Toyota plant and elsewhere to illustrate points and to tell stories. This is fine and dandy, but it does not serve such a high-powered thesis completely; so it must be read with a pinch of forgiveness. Anybody who bothers with these studies will know that it is not all sugar drops and robotic dogs in Asia and that there are actual social problems as divergent as the cultures of each country highlighted. To gloss over these problems and to smudge the lines between cultures (I know of few people who would argue that Japan and Singapore use similar methods to keep their streets safe) is acceptable only in a work that admits its simplicity. The final chapter of "Confucius Lives Next Door" attempts this in certain degrees to limited satisfaction.
That being said, I have been a fan of T.R. Reid for a while now. His articles in National Geographic are always very lucid, and his sense of humor is a trait more people need to have who write on topics like these. For a while though he seems to abandon the humor and go pseudo-academic for good stretches of this book, which I think works only part of the time. Read this book as a collection of stories and it is worthwhile. But anybody who has spent more than a few months living in East Asia will feel they could have written half of this book.

About the Author
Olive Ann Burns was born in 1924 on a farm in Banks County, Georgia, and went to school in nearby Commerce, which was the model for Cold Sassy. She attended Mercer University in Macon, Georgia; received a degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and for ten years was on the Sunday magazine staff of the Atlanta Journal and Constitution. She turned to fiction writing as a respite during treatment for cancer. She completed Cold Sassy Tree and a partial manuscript for its sequel, Leaving Cold Sassy, before her death in 1990.

Leaving Cold Sassy - A Gift

Soon after her first novel was published, Olive Ann Burns began work on the sequel, Leaving Cold Sassy. Fighting cancer off and on for at least 10 years, she finally succumbed to congestive heart failure. While confined to bed her last three years, Olive Ann drafted the first fifteen chapters. Her trusted editor, Ms. Katrina Kenison, took charge to wrap Ms. Burns final work in a satisfactory manner for the legions Of CST readers.
Insight into Olive Ann's process is a gift. Kenison allows readers a close up view to the author's process in building the story based on Olive Ann's own parent's marriage, struggles and love story.
Olive Ann Burns's legacy lives strong. Thank you Katrina and all. Job well done.

What a loss: Olive Ann Burns passing

Never have I read such wonderful prose and characters as Olive Ann Burns has created for us In Cold Sassy Tree and sequel, Leaving Cold Sassy.
The comparison of her writings to Faulkner, Twain NO exageration.
Delightful way to spend time "between the covers". I loved every page.
Only regret being this author is no longer on this earth to pleasure her audiences with her works.

Left cold by Leaving Cold Sassy

Initially, "Leaving Cold Sassy" was just as well written and engrossing as the original story. It would have been nice to know that the story has no real ending. Olive Burns was an excellent writer and it is unfortunate that she passed away and was not able to finish the story that was to become her legacy. The sequel is worth a read, but be forewarned that you will not find out what ultimately happened to Will Tweedy and his family.

I was very disappointed in this book. It was not good reading. So much of the book seemed irrelevant to Melita's life & activities. It cannot hold a candle to "espionage" books by David Wise et al. The retail price of $35 is outrageous especially for such a small book.

Madrid's second book (following The Supergirls: Fashion, Feminism, Fantasy, and the History of Comic Book Heroines) is a comprehensively annotated collection of forgotten female comic book characters from the era of Golden Age comics. Each of the book's four sections has an introduction, and a black-and-white comics story for each of the nearly 30 heroines featured. Covering everyone from Black Venus to Mysta of the Moon, the reprinted comics are sometimes magnificent and sometimes silly (and sometimes both), but they provide fantastic documentation of how many female characters were created during this era—some with surprisingly progressive personalities and stories to boot. The author's passion for heroines and fascination with those who have been left behind are palpable. The volume touches briefly on how many women were creating these female-focused stories and whether that was an important factor in the progressive nature of the characters. Unfortunately, it's an idea raised but not explored—while wholly enjoyable as an impressive, detailed collection shining a light on heroines long ago neglected, the volume is a bit lacking in analysis, which feels like a missed opportunity. About the Author
Mike Madrid is the author of Divas, Dames & Daredevils: Lost Heroines of Golden Age Comics (forthcoming from Exterminating Angel Press in October 2013) and The Supergirls: Fashion, Feminism, Fantasy, and the History of Comic Book Heroines, an NPR “Best Book To Share With Your Friends” and American Library Association Amelia Bloomer Project Notable Book. Great complement to THE SUPERGIRLS

In Divas, Dames, and Daredevils: Lost Heroines of Golden Age Comics, Mike Madrid picks up where he left off with The Supergirls: Fashion, Feminism, Fantasy, and the History of Comic Book Heroines, but in reverse chronological order. In The Supergirls he told the stories of Wonder Woman, Sheena, Batwoman, Elektra, Storm and the She-Hulk, among others.

In Divas he has compiled and annotated the actual comics of the Golden Age (black and white in the print book and colorized in the e-book). Most of the heroines will be new names to readers--they were to me--Madame Strange, a two-fisted reporter; Lady Satan, a woman who lost everything to the Nazis, Black Venus, an exotic dancer, and Mother Hubbard, a senior citizen. There's also Betty Bates--Lady at Law, Maureen Marine, Marga the Panther Woman, Spider Queen and Spider Widow. These are Rosie the Riveter-type heroines who fly planes, punch out villains, and more, often while holding day jobs. And there's Pussy Katnip, a real catwoman in world of anthropomorphized animals. The characters in Divas are a far cry from the 1960s-era comics when women stand-alone comics were Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane and Millie the Model, and the powers of ensemble heroines were things like invisibility. The comics in Divas are pre-Wertheim, pre-code so the stories are a bit grittier and the language reflects the sensibilities and stereotypes of the times.

The comics of the 1940s are a source for all manner of interesting observations--on language, society, narrative and design, mythic origins, readership and women's history. The art is rough but avoids the exaggerated proportions of later work. If I were a comic historian, this would be a treasure trove of research ideas.

Some of the comics were worth finding and others should have remained lost.

Wonder Woman wasn’t the only strong female in comics during the 1940s. This book explores the lost heroines of the comic book golden age. These are female characters that were introduced before the 1950s when the comic code took effect. The code watered down female characters and turned them into love interests instead of superheroes and adventurers.

The different types of characters are grouped together in chapters. War, espionage, jungle, science fiction and fantasy comics are represented in the book. Each of these chapters includes five or six full comics reproduced in black and white. The comics range from well written and illustrated to poorly written with amateurish art work to bizarre and almost psychedelic. Some of the comics were worth finding and others should have remained lost.

It’s always interesting to read old comics because they reflect society at the time they were first published. I also enjoy the art work, it’s the same kind of illustrations you see on the covers of pulp magazines. This book is for those readers interested in comic book history. Superheroes like Superman and Batman were not the only comics during the golden age.

The Lost Ladies Are Found Again

Mike Madrid brings back to life a time when comic books were new, fresh, and promising, and looks at super-heroines who have faded into the background but nonetheless deserve their time in the limelight once more. Nostalgia and cool information. How can you beat it?

A must-own for Weimar-era film fans

I highly recommend this reference work. It's easy to read and if you want only one book on films made during the Weimar era, this is the one for you. It's not a general, encyclopedia-type source for information, but the essays here cover a wide range of films and topics such as the star system, multi-language versions, and plenty on Conrad Veidt. Many people are unaware "that what can be legitimately labeled as Expressionistic filmmaking constituted at best a small segment of the filmic output and by no means not the dominant one." There's lots of illustrations, especially for lesser known films, with descriptions that will increase your understanding of them. You can read the preface and an overview here.

Critical studies of cultural importance

I am almost through reading this book and every essay is interesting and provocative. The book has encouraged me to seek many of the films discussed here and rarely available to the US market. The more I learn, the more astonishing the rise of the Nazis was considering the culture of Weimar.

So the battle lines are drawn: Roosevelt and Geronimo against the most powerful of the medicine men, a supernatural creature that seemingly nothing can harm; and Holliday against the man with more credited kills than any gunfighter in history. It does not promise to be a tranquil summer.

I love Resnick's Weird West!

To those of us who love reading, we are hard put at times to explain why we read what we read. The most common and best answer is, "it's fun!" It takes a special type of writer to write books that are interesting and fun to read. Mike Resnick has been doing this for years. His Stalking series is an enjoyable dectective[I think] series, while his Starship series is combines humor and action that holds the reader's attention.

However for me the Weird West series has wit and charm that I find irrestiable. Only Resnick can take two of the West's most visious killers, Doc Holiday and Geronimo, and make them into heroic characters. One does not associated humor with Doc Holiday, but he is here quite a comedian.

I think the concept of the United States being held back from crossing the Mississippi River by Indian magic to a stroke of genius. Add to that Buntline and Edison living and working Tombstone inconjuction with Holiday to open up the West with the help of Teddy Roosevelt, and bingo you have an action packed story.

This is the third novel with Holiday, Edison, Buntline, and Geronimo. Resnick's combination of steam punk and Western history meld together to make the Wild Wild Weird West a treat for all readers.

Thoroughly enjoyable sympathetic characters, a steampunk wild west, and just enough actual history and authenticity to make it immersive and believable. I've read all three books now and eagerly await the next one. Highly recommended.
