Huffington Post "When they came to shame the dogs, I said nothing. Now, they are coming to shame the cats. The only time we should act in solidarity with our canine brethren is in the face of such blatant and disrespectful propaganda." Henri, Le Chat Noir

Great book
By Steve
My wife and I used this book to travel the entire Great River Road during our two week honeymoon back in August of 2010. It was the only book we used with GPS and it was almost 100% accurate the entire time. We are from Australia so we had no local knowledge of the States and used the book extensively. But when we came across local details that had changed from the book, it was just a matter of stoppping at a service station or local business, and asking for help. We loved this book and our time travelling on the road so much that we often dream of doing it again. However, if we are going to do another road trip we will certainly choose another title from the collection of road trips by the same author. Thanks for making our honeymoon fun and allowing us to see the real U.S (which is great).

Great Little Book For Great River Road Trip
By Johto
This was a handy little book (it fit nicely in my pocket) to have along when I followed the GRR from Minneapolis to the tip of Louisiana in October 2011. It is concisely written and may help you decided which side of the river you want to drive on -- which is one feature that makes the GRR such a unique road trip. I spent 8 days on the GRR and averaged a little over 200 miles a day and consulted the book all the time. I found myself quite impressed by how much info was passed on within the pages of such a compact book. I plan on following the road north this summer to the headwaters of the mighty Mississippi and I'll take the book with me once again.

A fun read full of good ideas
By Ben
I was hoping for something with a little more attention to maps, or specific directions to follow the river road. Some sections were very descriptive, but some of the sections were not as easy to follow. The book does offer a lot of ideas for fun things to stop and see. I would recommend it, just make sure you get a good travel plan or map as well.

Decided on the Battlefield: Grant, Sherman, Lincoln and the Election of 1864, by David Alan Johnson

In the summer of 1864, the American Civil War had been dragging on for over three years with no end in sight. Things had not gone well for the Union, and the public blamed the president for the stalemate against the Confederacy and for the appalling numbers of killed and wounded. Lincoln was thoroughly convinced that without a favorable change in the trajectory of the war he would have no chance of winning a second term against former Union general George B. McClellan, whom he had previously dismissed as commander of the Army of the Potomac.

This vivid, engrossing account of a critical year in American history examines the events of 1864, when the course of American history might have taken a radically different direction. It’s no exaggeration to say that if McClellan had won the election, everything would have been different—McClellan and the Democrats planned to end the war immediately, grant the South its independence, and let the Confederacy keep its slaves. What were the crucial factors that in the end swung public sentiment in favor of Lincoln? Johnson focuses on the battlefield campaigns of Generals Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman. While Grant was waging a war of attrition with superior manpower against the quick and elusive rebel forces under General Robert E. Lee, Sherman was fighting a protracted battle in Georgia against Confederate general Joseph E. Johnston. But then the president of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis, made a tactical error that would change the whole course of the war.

This lively narrative, full of intriguing historical facts, brings to life an important series of episodes in our nation’s history. History and Civil War buffs will not want to put down this real-life page-turner.

From Booklist
The summer of 1864 marked the nadir of Northern confidence in victory, as Civil War buffs generally know from works like Charles Bracelen Flood’s 1864 (2009). Candidates who tapped into war weariness and angled to replace Lincoln, such as Salmon Chase, John Frémont, and George McClellan, are among the cast in this rendition of the interaction between political and military events that eventuated in the incumbent’s reelection. Johnson writes of battles, party conventions, and newspapers’ reflections of voters’ sentiment in a popular manner that flows well and is not overly scholarly. Dispensing motes of opinion and counterfactual observations (his epilogue traces American “history” following McClellan’s presidency), Johnson will appeal to the what-if aspect of Civil War discussion that animates debaters. The crucial contingent event, he argues, was the replacement of Confederate general Joseph Johnston by John Bell Hood, whose defeats are detailed in The Day Dixie Died: The Battle of Atlanta (2010), by Gary Ecelbarger. With lively narration of Union victories at Mobile and the Shenandoah Valley, Johnson delivers a readable account of the unlikely revival of Lincoln’s electoral prospects. --Gilbert Taylor

Review
"A revealing look at the influences, from the battlefield to the halls of government, that shaped a wartime presidency, sweeping the reader along with crisp narrative and a rapid pace. For students of both political and military history, this work is not to be missed."
-Michael E. Haskew, author of De Gaulle: Lessons in Leadership from the Defiant General

"Few things are as dramatic as the distinct parts of this book: Grant, then Sherman, then Grant again, gnawing away at the enemy, while Lincoln’s high-wire policy somehow holds his party together. Readers of David Alan Johnson’s deft treatment won’t want to cut to the chase of the re-election—each chapter follows this daring team of survivors. And Johnson’s epilogue on twentieth-century repercussions of the war is an apt lesson for writers and readers alike."
-James M. Cornelius, PhD, curator, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum

About the Author
David Alan Johnson is a freelance writer and the author of many popular histories, including Betrayal: The True Story of J. Edgar Hoover and the Nazi Saboteurs, Righteous Deception: German Officers against Hitler, Union (Images of America Series), and seven other books.

This is a short book that concisely details what happened from the time the Army of the Potomac launched its Spring offensive and the re-election of President Lincoln. All of this takes place in the space of six months in 1864 and insured a Union victory in the Civil War.

An Enjoyable Read on the Interplay of Politics and the Military in the Election of 1864
By Studge
In "Decided on the Battlefield," David Alan Johnson covered an enormous amount of ground, bringing into focus a whole host of battles and campaigns from the Peninsula Campaign in 1862 through Petersburg and Sherman's March to the Sea in 1865, with the aim of demonstrating that Northern victories on the battlefield determined the outcome of the election of 1864, and that Lincoln's victory at the polls determined the outcome of the Civil War.

As the election of 1864 drew near, Northerners were growing weary of war, there seeming to be no end in sight to all the bloodshed and death. Lincoln's re-election hung in the balance as his top generals struggled to win victories in separate theaters of war. Grant became bogged down in the trenches of Petersburg, persistently wearing down Lee's army and thinning out its defensive lines. With superiority of numbers and resources, it was just a matter of time before Grant defeated Lee's army, but Northerners were not optimistic. All they could see was a never ending stalemate. Meanwhile, Sherman endeavored to outmaneuver Joseph E. Johnston in Georgia, continually pressing nearer to Atlanta, the South's second most important city, before slugging it out with John Bell Hood around the outskirts of Atlanta. At Grant's behest, Sheridan would attempt to rid the Shenandoah Valley of the ever threatening presence of Jubal Early, with the goal of depriving General Robert E. Lee and his army of the food and supplies they needed to carry on the Southern war effort.

Jefferson Davis and the South hoped that if the Confederate army could hold out long enough, the Northerners would become so tired of the war that they would cast their votes in favor of the candidate nominated by the Peace Democrats, whose platform, the product of Ohio Congressman, Clement Vallandighim, was to end the war as quickly as possible and grant the Confederacy their independence, all without abolishing the institution of slavery.

If Lincoln lost the election, the Northern war effort would have been all for naught. To win the election, Lincoln's top generals had to sway public opinion in favor of the President, and this could be done by achieving victories on the battlefield. Northern victories became more and more likely after Jefferson Davis removed Johnston from command of the Army of Tennessee and replaced him with John Bell Hood, whose aggressiveness and all-out attacks failed miserably against Sherman's army. Sherman's eventual capture of Atlanta produced an upward surge in Northern morale at the right moment in time, with the presidential election just around the corner. Sheridan's ouster of Early from the Shenandoah Valley put the final nail in coffin of any remaining hope the Peace Democrats might have had of winning the White House in 1864. Lincoln would end up winning every state except for Kentucky, Delaware and New Jersey. Even the soldiers in the field cast their votes overwhelmingly in favor of Lincoln.

David Alan Johnson's first book on the Civil War was a real pleasure to read and quite a page turner. I highly recommend it.

quite a large misstatement of fact that made me put the book down as a probable waste of time
By John Kelly Richter
I read the second page of the book in which author states, as background to Grant and Sherman meeting in Cincinnati at the Burnet House in March, 1864, that nothing had happened in the war since Gettysburg and Vicksburg (Chickamauga, Chattanooga ??) and that the Battle of Fredericksburg had happened 3 months before...quite a large misstatement of fact that made me put the book down as a probable waste of time...I may pick it up again and hopefully find no more egregious errors of fact and some heretofore unconsidered insight...otherwise be your own judge.

Inuit and Whalers on Baffin Island Through German Eyes: Wilhelm Weike's Arctic Journal and Letters (1883-84)From Baraka Books

Told from an ordinary man’s perspective, these are the journal and letters of Wilhelm Weike as he accompanied Franz Boas—the father of modern anthropology—on his journey to the arctic from 1883 to 1884. This extraordinary document of early arctic history provides a plain, direct view of the Inuit and the whalers in their arctic environment at the end of the 19th century. With invaluable contextual and complementary information, this book contributes key insights during the recent wave of scientific assessment of Franz Boas’s legacy in all social sciences.

Review
"Weike's journal and letters do not stand alone. Introductory material and extensive background on both Boas and Weike and on the Arctic during the period add to and amplify the first-person account. Inuit and Whalers on Baffin Island through German Eyes greatly enriches our picture of the intermingling of indigenous and European cultures in the late nineteenth-century Arctic." —www.ForewordReviews.com (November 2011)

"[A] German servant's 1883 Arctic journal details challenges of daily living. . . . Weike's descriptions of the Arctic weather and terrain, his precise observations of life and impressions of his encounters with Inuit, whalers and wildlife bring you back to a time when winter started in late August." —www.NunatsiaqOnline.ca

"As servant to Franz Boas 'Weike finally gets his day in the limelight, and it is a cause for reflection on the social blind spots of even the greatest of men, as well as the scientific habit of monopolizing all of the credit for oneself, as if assistants, informants, and other hangers-on contributed nothing to the accomplishments of the scientist.'" —Jack David Eller, Community College of Denver

"Weike's journal is a fascinating text and an exceptional piece of working-class literature." —www.IASSA.org

I was hoping to read more about the specific lifestyle, traditions and methods of the Inuit at that time, so for me I was disappointed. The book is more of a journal recording daily events. In that sense it is well done.

Love Among the Particles, Norman Lock
By Lindsay Lusby
I enjoyed these re-imaginings of well-known tales in Norman Lock's short story collection LOVE AMONG THE PARTICLES. Lock enters classic stories like Robert Louis Stevenson's THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE after the curtain has closed and the audience is beginning to file out of the concert hall, when suddenly the cast returns for an encore performance--a final scene after the final scene. He also does this with the iconic 1932 film THE MUMMY and visits Henry James in a fictional New York outside of his own novels. At times I was even reminded of Italo Calvino's Cosmicomics in the more conceptual stories like "A Theory of Time" and "Ideas of Space." Although I certainly wouldn't call these stories easy-reading, I think you'll find that the challenge is worth the time and attention.

Beyond the Velvet Curtain (Wick Poetry First Book Series), by Karen Kovacik

In the presence of certain kinds of excellence in poetry, there is the temptation to say that they speak for some enduring principles of the art. This book makes me want to say 'that play' pure high spirit in the skilled and sensitive arrangement of words and parts of words 'may be what helps a poet most when the poet is concerned with both engaging emotion and avoiding sentimentality. 'We make the worlds we live in as best we can, out of the materials we have been given. The worlds of Beyond the Velvet Curtain a re in some ways remote from mine, but like mine, they run on good will and a faith in the power of human love. I am grateful to have encountered these poems.--from the Foreword by Henry Taylor. In Beyond the Velvet Curtain, Karen Kovacik illustrates Czeslaw Milosz's dictum that 'the purpose of poetry is to remind us how difficult it is to remain just one person. People with such diverse characters as Richard Nixon, Nikita Khruschev, Kafka?s father, Dorothea Lange, William Carlos Williams, Lawrence Welk, Robespierre, and a feisty Catholic saint, this original collection of poems takes us on an amusement-park ride through world history and art. Kovacik's poetry places us in the strange drama of cataclysmic events and ordinary life.

Vulnerability and Wit
By Marcel Louis
After I read a library copy of this book, I realized I wanted a copy for myself and bought one. Kovacik is a superb poet. Her poems delve into history, politics, family, marriage, discord, art with humor and vulnerability. "At the threshold of the model American home, / Nikita accepts Nixon's arm" a poem, with the epigraph "Moscow, 1959," begins. In another, she describes what it's like to drive the interstate with a UTI: "I am what I produce, and lately / I can't even piss right." My favorite poems in the book are ones where the speaker observes people in her life (husband in some; father, in others) with utter vulnerability and wonder.

Love The Continuing Saga!
By (Sunshine) Judy K Burgi
Once again the author kept the pages turning in this book. I was on pins and needles hoping Meredith would not lose her baby. I love how family and friends come together to help Meredith out. I am a bit worried about Jonah Miller I might add. Is he just a friend or is he hoping for more than just friendship?

Will Meredith be able to cope on her own? Will she be able to hang on to her house and land since money is so tight? I can't wait until Part 4, The Pieces of Summer, is published. Such an exciting Saga!

Good, but Too Short
By Sue S.
Very good story, but the books are too short. Just when you get into the story, you are at the end and have to wait another month to see what happens next. Like the regular length books better.
