Really is a book of gems, whether about riding in a high-rollin truck to remembering a father's voice reading Alice in Wonderland and having it carry through when she goes down her own rabbit hole. I wanted 100 more little stories. Keep an eye on this gal.

Micro-fictions, flash-memoirs, prose poems, incidents, anecdotes, extended metaphors--there's no differentiation on the book's part, nor is there much need, as most of the pieces are glittering little truths whether factual or not. What you want from a jewelry box is interest--of form, color, texture, history, personal meaning, delight, the sense of life itself cut multifaceted from rock, or at least made plastic. What you want is the feeling that handling these pieces was time was well spent. It most definitely is.

An excellent and well written story of the U.S.S. Essex and her captain. To those who find history boring they will be surprised by Dr. Daughan's ability to tell the tale in an exciting way making it read more like a novel.

Well, If 'Epic' Means LONG, Then OK. Otherwise, Not So Much

Rigorous editing would have improved and shortened this tale considerably, but would also have emphasized its biggest problem: not much happens. The 'epic' voyage was a mere 17 months at a time when whaleships routinely voyages literally for years, and not very much happens. Most of Porter's 'battles' are with lightly armed and quick-to-surrender British whalers, and even the culminating battle with the Royal Navy is a foregone conclusion, for Porter's Essex was outnumbered and heavily outgunned. Daughan does a good job on the historical background of the War of 1812 and America's campaign against the Barbary pirates, and he's honest about Porter's hubris, which brought him low, and about America's thirst for a hero (the Brits, after all, had just burned Washington, the White House included), which allowed the public to ignore the tarnish that clung to Porter. He also is good at explaining how smart British government leaders recognized that the young United States had become powerful enough that the smart thing to do was to see that both nations, once the war was over, would become friends instead of perpetual adversaries.--Bill Marsano is an editor and writer long devoted to naval history.

A dear friend`s story of triumph

As someone who watched Scott's early triumphs and struggles on the Genesian stage, I am so extremely proud of the successes he can list today on his resume. This book opened my eyes to the Scotty that existed before our friendship and the agonizing road Mr Damian traveled as our paths led us into adulthood. I am delighted to list Scott as a dear friend and extremely proud of his accomplishments with this work.
Whether your battle is stuttering, being the chubby kid, or being the tall goofy kid with the red afro and glasses, we all can get something out of the struggle and triumphs that Mr Damian shares with us in his memoir.
This book would do well as a mandatory read in High Schools across our country.

A must read!

V-V-Voice is absolutely brilliant. Scott Damian's book will have you captivated from the very first chapter. It's a heartfelt memoir that can only be described as a "page turner." His writing is brilliant and takes the reader on a journey like no other.
Add this to my list of favorite books to re-read again and again. I'd recommend V-V-Voice to anyone looking for a fresh and inspiring book.

The rainbow after the storm

I highly recommend this book to everyone. Mr. Damian's story is very powerful. I read it in one sitting. Not only does it tell the painful story of a stutter, it also touches on how a family struggles to help and cope with it as well. Our experiences as children often shape who we become as adults. This is proof that miracles can happen. Simply inspiring.

In Perry’s Victorian history-mystery series starring William and Hester Monk (this is the nineteenth installment), the point of entry for the evil that the couple try to right is the clinic for sick and injured prostitutes that Hester runs. In previous novels, Perry has examined all sorts of Victorian social ills, many of which have their parallels today. She does this, very naturally, by having Hester encounter some poor woman who has been abused or exploited. This time, one of the clinic’s workers is upset because her father has been defrauded of his life’s savings by the charismatic minister of a Nonconformist church, whose mission is to help people in Africa, while soaking parishioners. William, now head of the Thames River Police, is able to construct evidence of fraud. This book moves rather too quickly to trial, but the focus on series character Oliver Rathbone’s handling of the trial as a judge is one of the storys best elements. Blind Justice

Anne Perry cannot write fast enough for me. You can dish up William Monk or Tomas Pitt for breakfast to me every morning. Blind Justice was a brilliant read and I found myself breathless and disturbed that Sir Oliver Rathbone could actually allow himself to be caught up in the trial to the point that he would actually pass on information to the prosecuting counsel to use be used against the accused and then not recuse himself from the Bench. But it was warming to discover that he is human after all. A truly wonderful and exciting book down to the last page. I cannot wait for the next William Monk book.

A well executed story set in Victorian England. Hester Monk discovers that one of her nurses is concerned at the amount of money her father has donated to charity, through his church. The pastor, Abel Taft preaches giving to charity in his sermons while his deputy Drew Robertson applies pressure to encourage the parishoners to give all they can to charity but unfortunately the charities do not seem to receive this money. When Abel Taft is charged in court, Sir Oliver Rathbone, the judge uses his position to influence the outcome of the court case, with disasterous results. I found this book absorbing and hard to put down. Another excellent Anne Perry story.

This is not one of Anne Perry's best works

I enjoy the Monk series very much (even though the last 3 or 4 books in the series have not been as enjoyable as the earlier books). Blind Justice is well written and has an interesting story regarding Oliver Rathbone buried in it. But for the most part, there was too much extraneous writing that did not move the story along nor was it interesting (for example the dinner party and Oliver's fascination with the judge's wife).

Anne Perry seems to be moving in a different direction in her writings by suddenly changing some of the characters. For instance, in the Monk series Anne Perry has careful developed Oliver Rathbone's character and how he built his career and made an excellent reputation for himself. He gets married after his reputation and career has been established and finds a woman who seems perfect for him. Anne Perry carefully developed the character of Margaret (from an upper class family) who was a volunteer at Hester's clinic. Then suddenly the woman changes, leaves Oliver, and (in this book) becomes vindictive. Oliver gets in trouble and loses everything, including his judgeship and his law practice. Why? Where is Anne Perry going with the character of Oliver Rathbone? There are no clues to let the reader know.

As other reviewers have pointed out, Anne Perry spends too much time sharing Oliver's thoughts. They were boring (because he keeps going over and over the same issues, not only in this book, but in the previous Monk books). It seems like Anne Perry has lost her inspiration (and fills in gaps with the boring thought processes of the characters) and isn't finding material to keep the Monk series attractive to the readers. Note to Anne Perry: I can help you there. Monk's job with the river police; the addition of Scruff; Hester's clinic work are all excellent sources of good stories. If Oliver was still a lawyer, he could be included in those stories.

Although I enjoyed a small part of this book, on the whole it was not up to Anne Perry's skill. If Anne Perry doesn't improve in the future, I would prefer that she end the Monk series before it dies a natural death.

Great for Parents but Bows to Sex Abuse Hysteria

Filled with priceless information and insights about young people’s health and safety, but without the overly dense technical detail of a comprehensive textbook. The book is intended for “clinicians” (which I am not) in a broad sense – not merely physicians, but includes sections on “patient/parent advice.” The practical format makes it valuable for parents and other non-professionals interested in children’s health. Chapters specifically about medical personnel dealing with parents are especially informative.

However, one imperfection is that this otherwise priceless book is marred by repeated lip-service to the politically correct hysteria over child sex abuse. Throughout the broad spectrum of medical pathology there is widespread recognition of benign normal variations that require no intervention. Only in hysterical matters such as child sex abuse is there a fanatical conviction that any and all sexual experience in youth demands thorough surveillance, investigation and unproven “counseling.”

Some of the authors in this volume repeatedly advise clinicians to “screen” for sex abuse (most states have mandatory reporting laws), and the authors even advise doctors to recommend psycho “counseling,” although there are no specific claims about the need or effectiveness of such psycho-nonsense, which is not surprising since there is no reliable evidence that sex abuse diagnosis or treatment has ever been proven safe or effective by medical standards. Nor is there any acknowledgement of the high rate of false accusations of sex assault and abuse.

Instead of repeatedly reassuring parents (as doctors routinely do every day in the case of common viral infections or increase in vaginal secretion before menarche, etc.) that the best evidence available does NOT support the popular belief that early sex abuse is usually seriously harmful (1), there is not a word in this book disputing the mass hysteria over sex abuse. I got the distinct feeling that some authors see a need to protect doctors themselves from possible charges of inappropriate contact during an exam. Instead of being at the forefront of disputing pseudo-medical claims about the urgent need to address sex abuse, some “professionals” are apparently only interested in protecting themselves.

The authors need to confront the possibility that bowing to the hysteria rather than disputing it leaves the book open to the charge that this is one of many books perpetuating the hysteria. There is clear statistical evidence that physical abuse, emotional abuse and neglect are much more common and more deadly in childhood, but the authors in this volume have little or nothing to say about those more deadly forms of abuse. The popular fixation on sex abuse is clearly and certainly distorted. I highly recommend this book, but only to readers who can overlook the authors’ failure to reassure parents about the mass hysteria over child sex abuse.
