Great and Informative Read

Wurthnow comes with a formidable reputation and he certainly is no slouch in this book which reviews, condenses and depicts the results of many studies of the "post baby boomer" generation(s), sticking with people between the 20s and 45 years of age. He debunks some casual and widely held myths (e.g., how one generation appears to differ from another) and concentrates on the pretty hard numbers that track changes in the life styles of young people. . . and their consequences for churches. This book seems shaped as a resource for pastors, but almost anyone dealing with the young will get a lot out of it. Well worth the price and the read.

This books is a must for those who follow Generational Cohorts but suspect it may be pushed too far as the defining mechanism behind Generation X and Y. Wuthnow looks at the differences in life stages Independence, work force, marriage, children) between 21 to 45 year olds in 2000 (Generation X and Y) AND 1974 (Boomers). Lots of good data and analysis in longitudianal studies that comapre two cohorts at the same age. Differences in age of marriage and percent who do not marry, for instance, explains a lot of the differences in attendance and participation in religion. Be ready to plow through lots of data and disciplined conlusions

Lots of statistics, helpfully interpreted

After reading Smith and Denton's book, Soul Searching, with its great statistics on teens and faith, I wanted a book that was similar with information on young adults. I needed facts, not feelings, and this book offers that. I find it fascinating and easy reading, though I must admit I don't study every table carefully! It has been quite useful in my thesis work with young adults and faith.

The weekend is here, but it's too stormy for Robbie to go outside, so his mother encourages him to find something to do in his room until the weather improves. The youngster entertains himself by imagining he is a superhero, the captain of a rocket ship, and a ringmaster in a circus. He enjoys himself so much that he's actually sorry when the sun comes out. In rhyming couplets that don't always scan well, the narrative has a stilted cadence: "I have a cool red phone/I keep inside a secret place./It rings when there is danger/from behind its shiny case." The illustrations are done in the style of a graphic novel and fill the pages from edge to edge with dark, saturated colors and black outlines. The text appears in large circles throughout. About the Author
Gary Cook’s first published children’s book, The Best Saturday Ever, was inspired by a painting that was purchased at an art fair and is now hanging on the wall over his desk. When he was a child, his father worked as a manufacturer’s representative, and their home was filled with his samples of toys, games, and lab sets. All good things to keep an only child busy and spark his imagination and creativity. Gary studied art and music at the University of Minnesota, and photography at the School of Communication Arts. He is a self-employed commercial photographer doing advertising and editorial photography. His images have been printed in publications as diverse as Soldier of Fortune and French Vogue. He also pursues his musical interests as a drummer performing with local bands. Gary and his partner, Amy, live in Bloomington, Minnesota, with their pets, including Sparky the dog.

Adam Sward is a Minneapolis-based illustrator and tattooist. He also does graphic design, murals, live art, and some stand-up comedy now and again. He currently lives and works in South Minneapolis, Minnesota, with his dog and an almost alarmingly large collection of misinformation.

Inspired, Creative, and Playful!!

Gary Invites you into a world of witty rhymes, and inventive creation with this book. It is both fun to read, and it carries a positive message: never limit ones imagination. As a mother, I know that books like this one are hard to find... there are plenty of silly stories, and awesomely illustrated children's books out there, but 'The Best Saturday Ever' has it all! The underlying messages of patience and inventive play, are ones all parents should hope to instill in their little ones, and the Illustrations are vivid and bold so as to keep any kiddos mind wrapped in thought and curiosity. I highly recommend this book, be it a gift, or for your family... it is one you will read again and again!

"There is nothing new in New York: everybody is driving after money as usual," wrote Samuel F.B. Morse to James Fenimore Cooper. Yet Morseinventor, painter and arts organizerexemplified what Bender calls the city's "literary culture," which democratically modeled itself on Paris. The author, a New York University professor, identifies two other distinct subcultures in the pageant of the city's intellectual history. The earliest, which harked back to Edinburgh, brought together men of letters, businessmen and professionals in organizations like the Friendly Club. After the Civil War, an "academic culture" modeled itself on the German research university. Bender's theme is the role of intellect in shaping a pluralistic society, and he carries his story through the postwar era when New York City, as an international capital of culture, went from being a mere importer of modernism to a crucible of change.

the intellectual style of a city

In New York Intellect, Thomas Bender provides a guide to the history of intellectual life in America's cultural capital. He takes it through three phases which are based on the preoccupations of the city's intelligentsia during different periods: first, a city in which cultural institutions brought together an intellectual elite, next, a city with an explicitly literary orientation, and finally, the international capital of culture with an academic orientation. For students of cultural, intellectual, and/or urban history (which I am) this is essential reading. It's a good read for anyone interested in the history of New York City or the intellectual life of a city in general.

A Complex Dynamic

Reading Thomas Bender's essays and books are not easy for me. I approach each work knowing that he is demanding my attention to every idea he presents and to digest every complex revelation he offers. Whereas the book market about New York is flooded with repetitive histories and anecdotes about the same topics, Bender tackles the intellectual, cultural and social complexities of the City, and does so in a scholarly style which may intimidate some readers (including me). His works about New York's culture, sad to say, are atypical but I gladly devote the energy and time. It is worth it.

Early on in this work, "New York Intellect: A History of Intellectual Life in New York City from 1750 to the Beginnings of Our Own Time", Bender announces his subject and the importance surrounding it:

"We cannot understand ourselves as intellectuals, as Americans, until we grasp the special character of New York--both its possibilities and its limitations--as a place of intellect."

Bender then goes on to examine how no intellect, scholar or institution of higher learning is created in sui generis. They are all products of their times. But rather than simply examine how these men and (sad to say, few) women were influenced by their eras or how they influenced them, Bender analyzes how and why these scholars were either embraced or shunned. Some of the New York-based intellects and dispensers of higher learning discussed are familiar to most: Gallatin, Verplanck, Morse, Lippmann, Dewey, etc. However, it was the ones that I was unfamiliar with that intrigued me most, notably Randolph Bourne. I cannot understand how overlooked the man was. And, much to Bender's credit, has impelled me to read more about him.

Behind all this but by no means in the background is the City itself. Often presented as a commercial and cultural hurricane, it shaped and was shaped by these men and women. In spasms, the City turned to its scholars and universities for guidance; at other times, anti-intellectualism and apathy made them pariahs.

If you can't tell, this is complex stuff. And yet, I could not stop reading it. Thomas Bender is to be thanked for a career largely focused on the intellectual and cultural history of New York, and special recognition should be given to this book, in particular.

Perspective matters

The credentials of the authors aren't questioned. The usefulness of the information within - well what makes this book worth the money?

In full disclosure, I received my copy from NetGalley for free. I thought it would be an interesting read from a couple of authors I already liked. I am not a coach, but am considering becoming one. This book made it easier.

It's straightforward, plain talk about what coaching is and is not. There's lists of great questions, strategies and plans to help one succeed at coaching, but also to increase effective communications with others. I've already used many of the techniques with a teen, trying to get him to think effectively and decide on his own rather than telling him what to do.

I enjoyed the book, and as I move towards a possible new career in business coaching I'll refer back to a purchased copy of this book. It's easy to understand and follow,and allows you to pick and choose what works. I find it useful to apply to myself to in those times I start to question direction.

Well done. The experts approve, but the real test is what it does for every day people in everyday situations. Excellent reference point.

Coaching 101 to Advanced Techniques

This book is for those that want to become coaches, whether as a desired profession or as way to better lead others within an organization. Coaching for Breakthrough Success by Canfield and Chee is divided into 3 parts. Part 1 covers the heart of coaching in 30 principles that explain the role and benefits of coaching. Read this section if you want to be a coach or a better leader who is interested in developing your staff. Part 2 is a short 40 pages on the mind of coaching which explains Chee's situational coaching model (SCM) that covers 6 paradigms for success: goals, exploration, analysis, releasing, decision, and action. Many of the thoughts presented in these pages are a variation of standard guidelines for setting and meeting goals offered by many success gurus spanning the past few decades. Part 3 is referred to as the energy of coaching as it offers many techniques for achieving benefits and overcoming barriers. The last section can be used by a coach with a client or as a self-coaching tool if you need ways to build self-esteem or to get yourself motivated towards making action plans and finally achieving goals. The book includes sample coaching questions that can help lead to both personal and professional breakthroughs. Plus it contains multiple case studies showing successful implementation of changes.

Making the impossible a reality

This is a wonderful book.
I did not buy it to learn how to coach other people because I need to learn so much in life. I thought this book might have some helpful advice toward that successful breakthrough in my own chosen career in life. It does. I have read so much useful and helpful information in this book that I cannot help but recommend this book to anyone wanting to strive toward success. A lot of guidance. It is enlightning.
