The author does a wonderful job of telling the story

This is the third book in a series and from my limited knowledge of the French Revolution (I just started really studying this period), the material covered is accurate. Being told from the perspective of Marie Antoineete, at times my heart broke for the fear she must have felt. The author does a wonderful job of telling the story.

The Poor Queen

Juliet Grey has delivered an evocative telling of the last years of Marie Antoinette. The novel is set against an elegantly detailed background that pulled me into the story. From the jewelry to the clothes, the architecture, to the moods and emotions of the crowds. Never gratuitous or over the top but let me feel as if I was reading a movie.

The tone was absolutely sympathetic yet Marie Antoinette is given depth and a complexity that was believable. At times defiant and indigent, lustful for her lover, loyal to her husband, and always with a heartbreaking love for her children, she was complex and multifaceted.

The novel was fast paced and never lagged or got dull. I could barely put this book down and it was one of those books I couldn't wait to get back to.

I usually avoid novels about tragic female figures like Anne Boleyn, Jane Grey, or Marie Antoinette. Women who were ultimately pawns in the hands of men and who paid the ultimate price. It just makes for a sad story to which I already know the ending. I'm glad I went out of my comfort zone for this novel and feel well rewarded for doing so.

The author included a tidbits and fact section at the end which I loved. I wish more authors would do this. I highly recommend this novel and give it an easy 4 1/2 stars.

It Takes A Good Book To Make Me Teary!

Not too many books are powerful enough to bring a tear to my eye, but this book certainly did do just that!

I have always been dumbstruck at the savage brutality of the French Revolution. In my eyes it seems to have been bloodier, more disorganized and more devastating than America's own Revolution. I've read many non-fiction histories about the French Revolution and biographies of Marie Antoinette. I believe that it can be difficult to portray a historically tragic figure well, without overdoing either empathy or villainy, but Juliet Grey breathes life into this book. The characters grab you into their lives and keep you riveted to the pages. I began by reading this book in the morning as I had coffee and quickly began to just sit and read, and read through to the end in a day and a half (I had to do some regular life things inbetween the pages!).

The characters are brilliantly portrayed. The French Revolution and the devastation that it brought, not only to the nobility, but to the revolutionaries themselves, are portrayed so well that you feel as though you are a part of it all. It is as if you are a part of the destruction of so many priceless artifacts, you are standing by the scaffold as men and women are swiftly dispatched by the new nation's "razor" (the infamous guillotine) . The perils and fear that the royal family endured is palpable in the pages of this book, it no wonder that Marie Antoinette's hair turned white almost overnight. It is impossible to comprehend the terror that existed during these riotous times.

Juliet Grey paints her word images artfully, and I was pleased to find so much historically correct information. I suppose that it was the historical veracity that caused this book bring a tear to my eye now and then, knowing that the reality of those dire times was so close to the story the book presents. I have no doubt that Marie Antoinette arrived in France as a royal ingenue. I have no doubt that she did spend far too many gold Louis' on her wardrobe and her homes. That was, however, the life to which she had been born, the fetes and baubles were de rigueur for the time period, and she was so very young. I doubt that any one could have imagined the maelstrom that was about to descend upon France and the Royal Family. Marie's perceived extravagance became an easy scapegoat for the masses who were starving and had no right to expect anything better for their lives. Ms. Grey's portrait of Marie Antoinette is wonderfully complex. The Queen; both defiant and powerful and the mother and wife whose purpose was to protect and stand by her family. In this book she is portrayed as coming to love her royal husband late in their relationship, as the struggles of the French Revolution played out on the international stage. Loius comes across with passivity, and bewilderment but also as a King who finally understood the issues of his troubled Kingdom. He is noble and true to his honor and his word.

This book made me consider the two Revolutions - France's and America's - governments were overthrown for similar reasons, but one just seemed so much more blood thirsty, and so much more erratic. Liberté, égalité, and fraternité were altruistic and ambitious aims, but in France it seems that even the revolutionaries experienced a revolution within their own ranks as the power changed hands so often. With each change in the power struggle the fates of Marie Antoinette and her family hung in the balance. Mercy and exile seemed like an option for some time, until, in the end, all was lost.

At the end of the book there is an excellent section that provides short biographies of the characters as well as some facts about the times. An excellent bibliography is included as are 'questions for discussion' perhaps for a book club setting. i think that these were excellent additions.

In my opinion, this is a worthy rendering of the French Revolution and the family that was at the center of rebellion and hate. This book should have a wide appeal. Obviously, for those of us who love historical fiction, but it will also appeal to readers of very well written general fiction and also for those who are histoy buffs as well. There are also parts of this book that are history lessons, rendered in excellent, compelling prose.

Common Sense

Nice little book - easy to read and digest. However, Paul's videos on Youtube are much, much better. He has a great personality and a witty presentation style. I think I liked the book because I read it after listening to Paul, so I "heard" his voice come through. There's some succinct, practical advice here.

In fact the entire Practice makes perfect grammar and sentence comprehension and practice series is fantastic. And these are very reasonably, even modestly, priced books. Insightful Views of Sir Isaiah Berlin

2009 marks the centennial of the remarkable Oxford scholar and public intellectual Sir Isaiah Berlin. This collection of essays, interviews, and articles, edited by Henry Hardy who has done so much to preserve Berlin's reputation by publishing his unpublished materials, is one tribute to that milestone--and a rich one indeed it is. Also, Hardy is releasing shortly the second volume of edited Berlin letters (covering the 1946-1960 period); my Amazon review of the first volume attests to my belief that Berlin was one of the great letter writers, up there with Justice Holmes and Henry Adams. As several of the contributors to this volume explain, Berlin's letters are one of the best ways to probe the many dimensions of this remarkable individual.

The book is divided into several sections. It begins with a fine essay on Berlin's Russian and family background. Next comes a section of brief tributes delivered after his death by persons very close to Berlin, such as Lord Annan, Stuart Hampshire, Bernard Williams and Katherine Graham. After this helpful "warm up" the reader gets into the first major section, entitled "Isaiah in Person." This section is exceedingly important because it involves people who knew Berlin and interacted with him in various of his many interests. Indeed, those interests are exceptionally broad: politics and current affairs; the history of political thought; Jewish affairs and Zionism; Russian matters (an area that he never lost interest in); literature; music; Oxford and its perplexing internal politics; and the list goes on. The pieces in this section not only give the reader insight into Berlin on a personal level, but also help initiate the reader into the various Berlin fields of activity which otherwise almost become overwhelming given his constant whirl of activity across the world. Particularly outstanding essays in this section are by Bryan Magee; his longtime secretary Pat Utechin; Serena Moore, his secretary while president of Wolfson College at Oxford (which by the way he founded); Henry Hardy his editor and posthumous collaborator; Shlomo Avineri's on "Isaiah the Jew"; and Michael Ignatieff, Berlin's main biographer.

The second and final section deals with "Berlin on Paper." These authors did not interact with Berlin in person, but through his writing. This section gets into many of the substantive areas of Berlin's manifold activities, such his writings on pluralism, "liberal nationalism," the Enlightenment, Russian literature, and rationalism (definitely a two-edged sword for Berlin). Particularly helpful are the contributions of Jennifer Holmes, who works with Hardy in editing Berlin's letters, and Michael Hughes, who supervised the cataloging of the voluminous Berlin papers at Oxford. The analytical framework that Hughes applied to organize this mass of material is one of the best ways to get a grasp on the many dimensions and interests of Berlin. I found the appendix, an essay by Berlin's father on the history of the family, to be fascinating, though Berlin himself disparaged it.

The book includes a section of interesting photographs, family trees, and a comprehensive index. The contributors seem to agree that the three main shaping influences on Berlin's personality were the Russian, the Jewish, and the English--resulting in an scintillating amalgam to say the least. While the book contains few critical comments, it admirably accomplishes what I see as its two major objectives: introduce the reader to Berlin the person, and afford some exposure to Berlin the unceasing expositor of ideas. That it accomplishes these goals is something we can all be thankful for.

Those interested in the life and thinking of Isaiah Berlin, a person who navigated the tempest-tossed seas of Europe's last and bloodiest century, will find this book to be a source of many valuable and discrete treasures.

It is filled with appreciative thoughts on this cultural and scholarly figure culled from various pertinent sources; mostly close friends, work companions, and/or fellow educators: people who, almost without exception, knew and esteemed Isaiah Berlin. It is a celebration of a well-led and constructive intellectual life: look elsewhere if you seek a negative appraisal of this witty conversationalist and liberal---who fought with superior ideas the repressive all-knowing political schemes put forward for their respective societies by the deadly Hitler and deadlier Stalin.

The Real New York Startup

Art and Francoise were just like the artists of the "Belle Epoch." They lived in a run down neighborhood, subsisted on odd jobs, and their apartment was a studio, factory, gallery, and performance space all rolled into one. Rather than deal with the printers, they bought their own mini-press and printed their magazine on their own. This may not seem like much to you, but these were the days before the cheap xerox machine, Quark Xpress, or InDesign (does anybody even use Quark anymore?)

Those of you that read MAUS are probably familiar with Art Spiegelman's life, but Francoise Mouly's life is equally interesting. Her father was a rich doctor, a Legion D'Honor medal winning plastic surgeon, whose life was ruined because he had lots of daughters and no sons. Francoise ruined his life again by choosing architecture over medicine, then she quit school to travel, moved to the USA, and there you go. All along she preferred to work with her hands (a skill badly-needed in 1970's Soho) and became the neighborhood handyman.

I think this book is a statement on what it takes to be a start-up. This was an era when people did their own repairs, never threw anything away, reused equipment and furniture, didn't use credit cards; in short, it was "austere" (Occupy Movement take note!) and you had to take care of yourself. The Success of Mouly and Spiegelman's RAW magazine was as much to do with their own hard work as was the content. There was no shortage of underground comix artist-Crumb, Burns, Griffin, Moscoso, Pekar-but you needed business sense to make a magazine for them. These people weren't hobbyists or profit-seekers; they were artists who worked hard. Today's startups in Brooklyn, they're always surprised at how much work they have to do and how little money they make. In the 1970's, the new magazines, stores, and restaurants were not a place to make mountains of money, and the people that started those businesses knew it and accepted it. A more apt title would be "They Had to Live For Their Art."

The book is short and not well promoted, which is a shame. It has all the things that make New York's history interesting; artist communities, Soho lofts, weird publications, do-it-yourself startups. Like most famous New Yorkers (uh-oh, get ready for a repeat of every other New York book I ever reviewed) they were from outside the city; Paris, France, and Rego Park, Queens.

Some more photos from the era would've been welcome, along with artwork from RAW magazine. I would also have like to learn a little more about Spiegelman's early career, and maybe have some photos of their old neighborhoods in Paris and Queens. But I'll forgive any shortfall in this book. After all, it's a low-budget book from a small press, and those of us who love zines and small presses appreciate the roughness, don't we?

Jeet Heer's biography of the Paris-born New Yorker Francoise Mouly is breezy, yet quite insightful. Heer argues that Mouly, like other woman in the underground/art comics scene, deserve more credit for their contributions to the field. While her husband Art Spiegelman was putting ink on individual sheets of paper, Francoise Mouly dragged an old Multilith printing press into their Soho loft to put ink on hundreds, thousands of sheets of printed matter.

In the 1980's Mouly and Spiegleman were co-founders of RAW, the magazine, and RAW press, which published great graphic art by Sue Coe, Gary Panter, and Jerry Moriarty, among others. Today Francoise Mouly is art editor of The New Yorker and the publisher of Toon Books.

Heer's book's is not a big coffee table book, but clearly a labor of love. It is handsomely printed and illustrated with selections from a wide variety of Mouly's projects, past and present.

In love with Mouly

The name Art Spiegelman is known throughout the world for his revolutionary work, Maus, and his editorial work on RAW, which first helped introduce the work to Chris Ware, Charles Burns, and others. But...Art didn't work alone. His partner in these adventures for over forty years has been his wife, Francoise Mouly, who has her own artistic talents. She has been the art editor of the New Yorker since 1993, including the famous black on black cover after 9/11, and was a driving force behind RAW. In this book Jeet Heer, introduces the world to Mouly, through exclusive interviews with Mouly, Spiegelman, Dan Clowes, Adrian Tomine, and more. This book provides a behind-the-scenes look at the successful relationship between Mouly and Spiegelman, as they transform the world around them. Heer does an excellent job of telling their story and capturing their personality.

This is a great book, and an easy read that covers a lot of ground between Mouly and Spiegelman. I highly recommend this book for all fans of graphic novels, comics, and art in general. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.
