Gr 6-10–Fifteen-year-old Eugenie de la Roque and her family flee the French Revolution for the woods of Pennsylvania, where their lives are very different from the elegant world they inhabited among the French nobility. Based on the true story of a group of families who sought asylum in Pennsylvania, this title vividly captures the hardships faced by the teen and her parents as they adjust to a life without luxuries. A group of Quakers guides the small band of settlers. Hannah Kimbrell is initially frustrated by the seemingly frivolous demands of the new arrivals, but she eventually begins a friendship with Eugenie. At first the two girls seem to have little in common, but a shared outrage over how a slave is treated at the hands of her owner brings them together. Alternating between Eugenie's and Hannah's viewpoints, the story is equal parts period novel and coming-of-age tale. Eugenie's growth as she begins to understand what is really important to her is beautifully and convincingly portrayed. The “Queen” of the novel's title is Marie Antoinette, and the glittering details about life at Versailles provide a dramatic contrast with Eugenie's refuge in 1793 America. It’s a long way from the court of Versailles to the Pennsylvania wilderness in 1793, and a brutal culture shock for Eugenie, her parents, and other nobility who fled the French Revolution. Their arrival jolts young Quaker Hannah, who hires on with family to assist the expats and is expected to curtsy and act subservient to the royals. Higgins bases her story on an actual Pennsylvania settlement of French gentry who fled their homeland. Eugenie and Hannah narrate alternating chapters, offering sharply contrasting glimpses of what the French and Americans each held dear. The French naively await the arrival of Marie Antoinette, and their superior attitudes will incense readers who will figure that the royals are lucky to have gotten out with their heads. Eugenie’s and Hannah’s thought processes carry the story forward as they wrestle with notions of justice and gradually come together in friendship. Two girls coming of age, 1780s

Because of my preference for historical novels, I wanted to read this book before I gave it to my 11 year old niece. She lives in eastern PA and is a Friend, a Quaker. Her review will probably be more valid than mine. I found the overview of cultural differences very well done. I did have problems remembering the French titles, but it didn't keep me from turning the pages rapidly. Good reading. I am puzzled by the picture on the book's cover. Why does a daisy cover one of the girl's eyes?

Waiting for the Queen

I’m assuming most fiction for young readers is selected and purchased by parents or other adult relatives and friends. And raising kids well at this point is a counter-cultural undertaking, with all the scary and seductive junk that’s out there. And Waiting for the Queen, as a counterweight to so much of the popular culture, is a virtuous book in the best possible sense. By which I most emphatically do not mean, boring. Amazon’s description is accurate as far as it goes, though it’s helpful to know that the first person viewpoint, alternating between Eugenie and Hannah, imparts much of the novel’s flavor. (Makes it easy and natural for young readers to identify with the characters.) The setting, 18th century wilderness America struggling to become pre-Revolutionary France, is exotic. The plot is high-stakes and exciting. Eugenie initially is obnoxious (no fault of her own, given the values with which the was raised)—and under the pressure of her harsh new environment, and with the guidance of the Quaker Hannah, beautifully grows. Both heroines struggle to discover, ultimately to create, a place in the world; an identity, one that truly defines nobility, founded in love. As parents, grandparents, friends, what more could we want for our own children?
Waiting for the Queen, one of those rare books for young readers which can enthrall adults as well, beautifully sparks the imagination. Highly recommended, for more reasons than I have space to express here.

A moving story of human, interior growth in a historically challenging time.

I am from NE Pennsylvania but I have lived in Africa for 25 years. I am familiar with the early Quakers and today's Amish, and I know the feeling of facing language barriers. On my return to the US I became fascinated with Azylum. I am pleased to find a culturally sensitive story set in this challenging time. Though fictional, I particularly appreciate the author's use of first person views from the two main characters. The realism is natural and engrossing. Both teens and adults will be touched by the difficulties and opportunities represented in Waiting for the Queen.
