Juli 2010. Dazu wird die Krisenkommunikationsleistung von BP im Vergleich zu den definierten Handlungs- und Verhaltensmöglichkeiten der Krisenkommunikation analysiert. Diese Arbeit hat zum Ziel Mängel der Krisenkommunikation von BP aufzudecken, Verbesserungsvorschläge zu geben und somit herauszuarbeiten, inwieweit die Kommunikationsleistung mit verantwortlich ist, hinsichtlich des Imageverlustes des Konzern.Ferner wird bewiesen, dass das Image des Unternehmens durch die Krisenkommunikationsleistung signifikant beeinflusst wird.Neben der Analyse der Kommunikationsleistung werden Handlungs- und Verhaltensmöglichkeiten der Kommunikationsabteilung bei einer eintretenden Krise anhand eines Beispiels erarbeitet. In diesem werden Ursachen und Wirkungen einer Krise dargestellt.

Kill the Messenger

This is a well researched book that every person in the US should read. It helps to explain how newspapers, radio, and TV have contributed to the hostile political climate that now exists in the United States. It highlights the problem with media owned and/or controlled by groups that are more interested in propaganda than unbiased reporting.

A vital read

This book is a must read for everyone, not just journalists or scholars or policy wonks. Beautifully written, engaging, incredibly researched, but most of all, heartfelt, Maria Armoudian's Kill the Messenger tells the vital stories of the impact of media on our perceptions of the world, and how we are either motivated to act in the face of injustice, or, because of the media's impact on us, we decide turn our eyes away. I cannot recommend it enough.

Mass media, genocide, and the fate of the world

The emergence of mass society was one of the defining characteristics of the 20th Century. Enabled by population growth, industrialization, urbanization, rising rates of literacy, and advances in transportation and communications, mass society became a reality for growing numbers of people in more and more far-flung regions of the planet as the century unfolded. In turn, mass society facilitated the growth of Communism, Fascism, and other varieties of authoritarianism. Among the less extreme effects of this new phenomenon in human affairs were the advent of "public opinion," the globalization of fashion, and the rapid development of important new industries such as advertising, public relations, and broadcast journalism. The "mass communications" we have taken for granted for so many years now were, properly speaking, an artifact of the 20th Century.

In Kill the Messenger, political scientist and radio broadcaster Maria Armoudian ably examines the central role of mass media in human affairs over the course of the century. Through brief case studies of events in Nazi Germany, Rwanda, and the former states of Yugoslavia, she explores the influential -- and perhaps essential -- function of the media as an enabler of genocide. Armoudian shows how authoritarian regimes in South Africa, Chile, Taiwan, and Burundi made similar efforts to harness the media to help promote the murder, torture, and imprisonment of their own citizens but with much more mixed results. In South Africa, for example, she reveals how new attitudes in the news media helped bring about a largely peaceful conclusion to the era of apartheid. Armoudian's examination of public opinion about climate change demonstrates the huge impact of relatively minor investments in media by Exxon Mobil, the Koch Brothers, and other naysayers.

Armoudian puts to work the linguistic concept of "framing" throughout the book, showing, for example, how climate change deniers managed to persuade the mass media to present the issue as open to debate. This frame ("debate") has dominated coverage not just on Fox News but on most other television and radio networks as well. Similarly, frames ("blaming" and "heroes-versus-villains") dominated news coverage in countries where genocide became generally accepted.

Kill the Messenger is an important book because it squeezes between two covers a collection of observations and insights about many of the seminal events of the 20th Century, rendering the history of mass society understandable through the lens of mass media. However, it remains to be seen how much longer Armoudian's analysis will help illuminate events in the future. The emergence of new communications technologies revolving about the Internet may have thrown a monkey wrench into the phenomenon of mass media. It's far too early to tell.

This fascinating book would have benefitted from a better publisher than Prometheus Books. The text is rife with glaring typos that even a cursory proofreading would have caught. The cover art is uninviting, an unfortunate sign that Prometheus Books either doesn't know or doesn't care how to market a book of this significance.

Memory Lake; The Forever Friendships of Summer, was released by Vantage Point Books in July 2011.  This novel-memoir became an Amazon best seller the following month.  In June of 2012, it won first place in the Inspirational category of the "2012 Next Generation Indie Book Awards".   Readership continues to grow and a second edition of Memory Lake is scheduled for release August 2013 through Tate Publishing.  The Second Edition's front cover depicts Lake Michigan as seen from the top of Sleeping Bear Dunes; the novel's setting, and an area named "Most Beautiful Place in America" by ABC's Good Morning America.

Loved it!

I never went to summer camp in my youth nor have I done any camping in my adult life; however, after reading this book, I felt like I have. Nancy Kyme is so descriptive that I felt like I was experiencing camp life with her. I could see, hear, feel & touch everything that Nancy (the author) was - it was so enjoyable! The only disappointment was when the book was finished. I wanted to keep reading more. This book is also about how important friendships are and how they help you grow into the person you become. There are many lessons to be learned here. Memory Lake is beautifully written and I hope the author has another book coming out. I would definitely purchase it.

More Than a Summer Camp Read

Mother, daughter, military wife, C. P. A. and first-time author Nancy Kyme has penned a luminous literary non-fiction piece about her experiences at a summer camp on the shores of Lake Michigan in the 1970's. This finely measured, clearly remembered and richly imagined work cycles in a complex recursive arc from the adult Nancy taking her daughter and the daughter's friends to Nancy's reunion at the camp back and forth through time by means of a sophisticated intermittent narrative of the teenaged Nancy who spent seven summers at the camp. All the classic camp story elements are there: the bunks, the cabins, the dining hall, the counselors, lessons and activities of all sorts, the smelly and somewhat brutish boy campers, the awards, encounters with nature, pranks, conflicts between girls (although minor and understated) songs, ceremonies, special trips and a sense of Edenic isolation.

And yet, like the lake at the camp's edge, much more lurks beneath the surface. The first half of the story resonates with elements of myth, romance (in the literary sense), tragedy (loss) and a struggle to create meaning and find peace in the aftermath of a heartfelt tragedy. This is no summer beach read or even a notch or two above a summer beach read: it is a full-on resonant example of the coming of age genre told from a point of mature wisdom. I believe it is destined to become a classic if there is any justice in this world.

Memory Lake, while focusing on the difficult straits of the passage into adulthood and coming to terms with the past, lies close in imagination to Never-Never Land, the planets of Star Wars, , the wizarding world of Harry Potter, Narnia, the emerald towers of the City of Oz and the Louisiana of Steel Magnolias. With its complex but clearly presented structure, characters and setting , the book evokes not only a richly remembered past but also a calm present whose serenity has been gained only by great sacrifice. Well drawn, identifiable characters (whom we like and wish the best for), authentic dialogue, exact and evocative word choice, beautifully detailed description and poetry worked into the prose at every turn of the page create a world apart we have either experienced or wish we could have.

The second part of the story drops into a post-modern recounting of the culmination of the trip to the reunion at the camp and resonant flashbacks to a mythical wounding and its healing aftermath. We also learn the true nature of the informing tragedy of the book . The resulting philosophical and theological insights lift the narrative into the realm of the universal archeytpe while remaining firmly rooted in everyday events and miraculous epiphanies.

With this book, Kyme joins the ranks of authors like Alice Sebold, A. S. Byatt, Barbara Kingsolver, Alice Munro, Laurie Colwin and Anne Tyler, who write about ordinary life and its implications and who illuminate matters of the heart with skill, insight and subtlety. I pray that she has many, many more stories in her heart and mind for all of us who need to remember, to hope, to be unafraid, to move on and to love.

I am a rapid reader, and normally I could have read the 400-plus pages of a book like this in two days at the least, and four days at the most. This book took me three weeks of solid reading because I crawled through it. There was so much to see along the way--I don't regret the time I spent reading at all. It was time and effort well spent.

So Delicious I want more!

So, I am not a writer. I am a reader. I also am a grad student and while in school I try to stick to my school books because if I am intrigued by what I read, I will keep reading. Last Wednesday a friend handed me "Memory Lake." She said, "Great book, you have to read it." I have a lot of "great books" sitting at home waiting to be read, but I took it from her and set it on the the coffee table at home. I have my comprehensive exams for school right now and thought. Heh, reading for pleasure, ya right!

The next day I was having trouble sleeping, I couldn't turn my mind off of my school work. I got up and went into the living room. "Memory Lake" was sitting on the coffee table where I had left it. I decided to pick it up and see what this was all about. My friend said it was fun. I thought I could use some fun right now. I started to read and I was instantly engaged and felt as though my body breathed a sigh of relief. My shoulders dropped and after an hour I forced myself to stop reading and went instantly to sleep. The next day my husband and I were flying to a family wedding. I carefully packed my schoolwork and snuck in "Memory Lake" for a few minutes of respite. On the plane I read nothing but Memory Lake. I could not put the book down. I would stop and study for an hour and then back to reading for two. I finished the book in a few days and even though I should have been studying I gained so much more from this read.

I have never written a review before but I wanted to share my experience with this book. Many times I was brought to joyful tears and moved by the writing. It is a coming of age memoir clearly written from the heart. It captured so many of my own growing experiences and moved me to keep reading even though I knew I should be studying. It also reminded me of my own inner strength and pushed me to keep moving forward. I studied hard after I finished the book. ;) I am writing this review to thank the author for such a magnificent work, to share with the public and encourage others to read such a delicious piece. It reminded me of a dessert that I could not stop eating. A delicious piece of chocolate that is to be savored and enjoyed again.

Fishing for a good book...here it is!!!

This book is a winner in every sense of the word. The message of true friendship, peer pressure and being non.-judgmental is a very timely one. The illustrations are big, bold, detailed, expressive and cartoonish, capturing the imagination of anyone reading the book. They flow perfectly with the text inviting you visually into the well told tale.
Fang is a gigantic, toothy shark whose best friend is a teeny, tiny minnow named Nugget. They adore each other and spend quality time hanging out and swimming happily in the deep, inseparable playmates indeed. Life together is a splendid affair until the day that Nugget swims off to attend school. He is shocked to learn that sharks should not be your friend, but are to be feared and avoided at all costs - the cost being....maybe even your life. He finds this unbelievable but internalizes this knowledge and acts upon it. He confronts his now ex-friend Fang and terminates their friendship.
Poor dejected Fang cannot fathom that he has lost his best friend. He tries many different ways to regain and restore this damaged relationship but to no avail. He finally swims away and upgrades his downheartedness to broken-heartedness!He finds a solitary place to grieve over his loss and then he hears desperate pleas for help from his little friend Nugget and his school mates. Fang recognizes their plight and swashbuckling with his sharp teeth tears off to the rescue. He chomps and slices the little group to safety and becomes their hero. After the valiant rescue Fang is ecstatic because now he not only has regained Nugget as his friend but nine other hero-worshipers as well!
This book will have your pearly-whites flashing and your heart smiling too after you read to the very last page and acknowledge you have just read a very, very good book.

"Biting" humor -- chomp chomp!

This hilarious book will please kids and adults alike... which is important for bedtime readings. Kids will howl over hysterical illustrations (Fang ridiculously disguised as a mermaid) while parents will grin over the watery puns sprinkled through the book. I've seldom enjoyed such a perfect pairing of colorful characters... or, for that matter, of writer and illustrator.

I loved the word-play, fantastic writing, and fun illustrations. This is such a clever picture book with levels of meaning. Don't always believe the group mentality is one lesson that is wonderful for children to hear. And friends come in all shapes and sizes. Great picture book!

Classic Stoppard, absolutely fantastic!

Tom Stoppard at his finest, The Real Inspector Hound has to be one of his best works, and when it is placed in the same volume as such other works of lunacy as Dogg's Hamlet, Cahoot's Macbeth, then you're bound to be on to a winner.

About the Author
Carl Frankel has been writing about green business for over two decades and is a serial social entrepreneur. He is the author if In Earth's Company and Out of the Labyrinth. His articles on business and sustainable development have appeared in dozens of magazines and journals, and he has contributed to several books on environmental management. He is a graduate of Princeton University and the Columbia University School of Law.

Allen Bromberger is a leading social enterprise lawyer with more than 30 years of experience structuring a wide variety of for-profit and nonprofit social ventures, joint ventures, commercial co-ventures, and substantial nonprofit earned-revenue ventures. He has written extensively about the legal aspects of social enterprise and in 2008 received the National Leadership Award from the Social Enterprise Alliance for his work translating complicated legal concepts into language that social entrepreneurs and investors could understand. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Sustainable Business Council and the Fourth Sector Network, and serves as legal advisor to the Catherine B. Reynolds Program on Social Enterprise at New York University.

Building the Better Model.

This book covers the how and the why of social enterprise, with a heavy dose of You Can Do It! The evolution and purposes of mission-based business are outlined. Although there is a critique of the current dominant business model, the book both quotes and embodies Buckminster Fuller's adage that changes comes, not by fighting current reality, but by building a better model. This book, written by two attorneys, is partly an idealistic manifesto, but primarily a practical primer on planning, forming, growing and managing a social enterprise. The book has both feet planted firmly on the ground. Challenges are not sugar-coated. Lessons are drawn from both successful and failed ventures. As a business attorney, I appreciate the analyses and many concrete recommendations about choices of business entities, structure, management, finance, planning, exits and more. Interviews with several social entrepreneurs illustrate real-life issues and solutions, and show how to think about values-based business. The many case studies could only be provided by attorneys who have spent years working the field. But civilians should have no fear; the book is not a legal textbook or treatise. It is well written, clear, concise, often humorous, and accessible to all, managing the neat trick of being both intensely idealistic and usefully pragmatic. Highly recommended for social entrepreneurs and their investors, employees, professional advisers, and even their customers.

The Art of Social Enterprise lays out the landscape of potential business structures, funding, operations, and relationships and charts a path illuminating the choices and pitfalls that await aspiring 'socially-conscious' entrepreneurs. The book gentles an otherwise steep learning curve with frank, no-nonsense commentary on this road less traveled. Carl Frankel and Alan Bromberger - themselves pathfinders in the arena of 'business as an agent for change' - provide a rare mix of theoretical and practical discussion along with work-a-day examples and edited transcripts of actual consultations between Lawyer and Social Entrepreneur. The book is like having your own personal mentor helping you do the necessary thinking and navigate the challenges inherent in creating a business that is both successful in the conventional sense and successful as a change-agent for the greater good.

Incredibly Valuable!

The "Art of Social Enterprise" lives up to its title in every way! It is an ARTFULLY written, insightful and straight-forward book that provides up-to-date information about all aspects of launching, growing and maintaining a social enterprise. As someone who works to support inventors, innovators and social entrepreneurs with funding, training and connections, I found this book to be incredibly valuable and I learned something new in every chapter. Not only is it an accurate depiction of how difficult it is to do this work, but it provides a context for how important it is to succeed in these enterprises. It also gives the social entrepreneur practical advice about how to enact their vision and then sustain it in the face of what can be daunting challenges. Add to that - it's an enjoyable read filled with highly relevant data and wonderful examples :) I highly recommend this book to everyone working in the field (or aspiring to) and will be suggesting it as reading for our grantees, associates and colleagues.
