SQL Built-In Functions and Stored Procedures: The i5/iSeries Programmer's Guide, by Mike Faust

Stored procedures and built-in functions can greatly expand the power and usefulness of SQL, but surprisingly these highly useful tools remain untapped by many programmers. For programmers who are new to the subject or those who want to expand on what they already know, this book provides an introduction to the creation and use of built-in functions and stored procedures under OS/400 and i5/OS. Programmers are lead through the development of custom-built functions for the programmer's own use, which includes editing numeric values for print with commas, decimal points, and currency symbols; returning the distance in miles between two zip codes; returning a running cumulative total for the data in the column; and converting date and currency to a text string. Each function includes code that can be used in the developer's own programs. Routine maintenance functions such as copying a file, rebuilding an existing table without losing the data in the existing table, building data files, modifying a library list, and compiling programs are also covered.

Highly dissappointed in MC Press.
By Amazon Customer
I am a computer programmer/analyst for a major manufacturing company and a need has recently come for us to write some stored procedures for interfacing our machine software on PC workstations with our AS/400. I've written many RPG IV programs with embedded SQL and even wrapped them in stored procedures, but I wanted to learn SPL to try to avoid the middle man. This book was NOT easy-to-understand as advertised. Rather than explain, line by line, what each command does/means so that you can use it for your own purposes, he just gives you an example procedure and tells you what it does. These procedures are supposed to be useful, but we can't use many of them and I think some would be much better served in other languages. I found this book very poorly written and difficult to follow. It started out just fine, but about 50+ pages into it he abandons his clear explanations and goes far beyond a beginner's means--like flooring the pedal in a Firebird. It was almost as if he had a deadline to meet and wrote the second half of the book in a fraction of the time he spent on the first half. If I wanted something so technical and confusing I would have read the free IBM manual rather than buy this book. MC PRESS needs to change this book's rating from 'Novice' to 'Advanced' and a second edition needs to be released correcting all the errors. Mr. Faust you dropped the ball on this one.

General overview
By T. Clark
The book starts out with good details on some of the keywords, but seems to give big examples, with brief explanations toward the end of the book. I was hoping for a bigger book, with better examples.

A Long Silence: Memories of a German Refugee Child, 1941-1958, by Sabina De Werth Neu

After more than sixty years, the nightmarish sufferings of so many victims of Germany’s Nazi regime have been documented extensively. Rarely, however, does one hear about the experiences of German children during World War II. Coming of age amidst the chaos, brutality, and destruction of war in their homeland, they had no understanding of what was happening around them and often suffered severe trauma and physical abuse.

This haunting memoir tells the riveting story of one such German child. Born in Berlin in 1941, Sabina de Werth Neu knew little during her earliest years except the hardships and fear of a war refugee. She and her two sisters and mother were often on the run and sometimes homeless in the bombed-out cities of wartime Germany. At times they lived in near-starvation conditions. And as the Allies stormed through the crumbling German defenses, the mother and children were raped and beaten by marauding Russian soldiers.

After the war, like so many Germans, they wrapped themselves in a cloak of deafening silence about their recent national and personal history, determined to forget the past. The result was that Sabina spent much of her time wrestling with shame and bouts of crippling depression. Finally, after decades of silence, she could no longer suppress the memories and began reconstructing her young life by writing down what had previously seemed unspeakable.

Illustrated by vintage black-and-white family photographs, the book is filled with poignant scenes: her abused but courageous mother desperately trying to protect her children through the worst, the sickening horror of viewing Holocaust footage on newsreels shortly after the war, the welcome sight of American troops bringing hot meals to local schools, and the glimmer of hope finally offered by the Marshall Plan, which the author feels was crucial to her own survival and that of Germany as a whole.

This book not only recalls the experiences of a now-distant war, but also brings to mind the disrupting realities of present-day refugee children. There is perhaps no more damning indictment of war than to read about its effects on children, its helpless victims.

From Publishers Weekly
In her first book, De Werth Neu, a retired therapist born in "Berlin, Nazi Germany" at the start of WWII, recounts her nightmarish experiences as a refugee child from her native land. Forced from home as part of Hitler's efforts to strengthen the Eastern front, de Werth Neu, along with her mother and two sisters, endured countless relocations, assault and rape by Russian soldiers, never-ending hunger, and a horrific train ride during which babies died and toilet buckets overflowed into the crammed cars; "we were the lucky ones," she points out, "no one was trying to exterminate us." Such a sobering perspective is indicative of the author's amazing sense of gratitude, which resurfaces each time she recalls moments of great happiness: receiving an unforgettably delicious apple from a farmer's wife, having a tube of toothpaste all to herself, watching her mother dance. The constant back-and-forth between thrills such as these and the unimaginable suffering she endured has a bit of a wearying effect, but creates an engrossing account of the consequences of war and diplomacy for a single child. "Compelling and thoroughly readable."
–Larry McMurtry, author of Lonesome Dove

"A poignant and powerful memoir, filled with horror, joy, and sorrow. It ought to be read by every American, for it is, in the author's words, ‘my thank you to the American people for their kindness, generosity, and the sacrifices they made during those hard postwar years in Europe.’"

"For us the war was just beginning"
By Erik Gfesser
The memoir that Sabina shares here is very much reminiscent of "German Boy" (see my review) by Wolfgang W. E. Samuel, and "Barefoot in the Rubble" (see my review) by Elizabeth Walter, and follows in the footsteps of "Bread on My Mother's Table" (see my review) by Ingrid Andor, because she provides a psychological dimension in her writings that the other works lacked. The author recounts how as a child her life was put on hold after hordes of Russian soldiers started to flood Germany like swarms of locusts following the end of World War II, with a gang of them entering her home, raping both her and her mother, and leaving them helpless over shouts of laughter. Reading her words is extremely painful. Although her pain is in words, what she shares is just as visual as what the protagonist endures in the silver screen rendition of "Woman in Berlin" (see my review) by Anonymous, and is not meant for the faint of heart. Like Wolfgang W. E. Samuel, Sabina makes her way with family from eastern Germany away from the Russian armies to western Germany, finally making her way to the United States, expressing heartfelt thankfulness to the American people for their acceptance of her, beautiful words for any American who no longer sees their country as unique, especially for those who are not familiar with the millions who endured the undeserved persecution that often included murder following World War II. As a descendant of a Donauschwaben concentration camp survivor, this is the type of memoir that I would have liked written for me, albeit with a large element of fear, were it not for the stumbling block of grief which quickly arose when such experiences were revisited. Sabina credits the love from her second husband, Charles, as the source of courage to finally write this memoir. Thank you Charles.

Surviving the Red Army rapists and life in post-WWII Germany
By R. Miller
Sabina de Werth Neu has written a memoir that is one of the most fascinating books I ve ever read. I could not put it down and read the entire book in 2 days. The author captures the unique difficulty of being German in the post WWII world early on. At Loc 100 she writes "I am German-there, I have said it. I can never be anything else. I have been hiding from this burdensome truth for most of my life and running from the nightmare of a war and the industrialized barbarism of an evil regime that I could not and did not want to accept, let alone try to understand. "

The author was born on September 26, 1941 in Berlin. Her family was moved to East Prussia, the worst place to be when the Soviet Red Army arrived. The family was evacuated to Czechoslovakia before the Soviet takeover. On May 8, 1945, the author, her sisters and mother were raped by Russian soldiers, the mother repeatedly. The author was not even 4 years old at the time of this sexual abuse. Her description of this event is ghastly. I have often come across comments on amazon that the expulsion of the Germans from Czechoslovakia was relatively peaceful or that these rapes were isolated - nothing could be further from the truth. These rapes were routine and in the case of Eastern Germany continued for years. Both Russians and Americans are in denial about this.

What is remarkable is that this family survived these events, and the post-war deprivations. The family was expelled from Czechoslovakia into East Germany. The mother (obviously) was so uncomfortable in Russian occupied East Germany and took her children to the west. She did not want to be anywhere near the Russians which was understandable.

The author is an unabashed pro-American cheerleader. She is enormously grateful to General George Marshall for the Marshall Plan and the assistance she and her family received from the Americans. At (kindle) loc. 943 the author writes; "In writing these pages, I am aware now that I never felt at home in Germany, nor did I feel a shred of national pride." Author Eckhart Tolle described a similar feeling. As a child, Tolle would play in the ruins of buildings from the war. He described feeling depressed by his experience of "pain in the energy field of the country" He too left Germany like de Werth Neu, at an even earlier age. My experience is different than these authors. I was born years after the war ended, and was fortunate to spend time in Germany in the 1970's and early 80's. I did feel at home there, and found the people, especially the young people, to be warmer, friendlier, and not at all superficial and cruel like many of the people I grew up with here in the USA.

There is a paranormal episode in this book too. The author's sister Tina talks Sabina into going deep into the woods near Stuttgart, ostensibly to a lover's lane to watch couples have sex. Instead, Tina digs up a skull of a woman. It is a graphic and gory episode - paranormal because Tina had been having repeated dreams about a man murdering women in the woods and seemingly knew where to look. The skull belonged to a woman who had been raped and murdered by a serial killer. Tina was not only psychic, but from the author's description must have been an empath as well.

The author does an excellent job describing the changes and improvements in life in West Germany. I enjoyed the section she wrote about the death of Stalin. I can imagine the relief her mother felt at the death of that monster. His death, like Hitler's, must have been celebrated throughout Europe.

This book is about the triumph of the human spirit. The author had a very difficult life, in spite of which she accomplished a great deal. It is also about the emotional damage inflicted by some very negative male figures including Red Army rapists, the author's father and an arrogant jerk of an ex-husband. It's a wonder that the author and her family survived as intact as they did despite their contact with the Soviets.

I absolutely love this book and this author for sharing it with us. I see reflections of friends and family in much of what she writes. I can only give this book the highest recommendation. Absolutely fascinating glimpse into post-war Germany.

The Stardust Revolution: The New Story of Our Origin in the Stars, by Jacob Berkowitz

Three great scientific revolutions have shaped our understanding of the cosmos and our relationship to it. The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries witnessed the Copernican Revolution, which bodychecked the Earth as the pivot point of creation and joined us with the rest of the cosmos as one planet among many orbiting the Sun. Three centuries later came the second great scientific revolution: the Darwinian Revolution. It removed us from a distinct, divine biological status to place us wholly in the ebb and flow of all terrestrial life.

This book describes how we’re in the midst of a third great scientific revolution, five centuries in the making: the Stardust Revolution. It is the merging of the once-disparate realms of astronomy and evolutionary biology, and of the Copernican and Darwinian Revolutions, placing life in a cosmic context.

The Stardust Revolution takes readers on a grand journey that begins on the summit of California’s Mount Wilson, where astronomers first realized that the universe is both expanding and evolving, to a radio telescope used to identify how organic molecules—the building blocks of life—are made by stars. It’s an epic story told through a scientific cast that includes some of the twentieth century’s greatest minds—including Nobel laureate Charles Townes, who discovered cosmic water—as well as the most ambitious scientific explorers of the twenty-first century, those racing to find another living planet.

Today, an entirely new breed of scientists—astrobiologists and astrochemists—are taking the study of life into the space age. Astrobiologists study the origins, evolution, and distribution of life, not just on Earth, but in the universe. Stardust science is filling in the missing links in our evolutionary story, ones that extend our family tree back to the stars.

A gem of a book about our roots in the stars
By Robert Adler
The Stardust Revolution surprised and delighted me from the first page. Its core idea is not new--popularized by Carl Sagan many years ago when he said the we are star stuff contemplating the stars--but Berkowitz turns that from a lovely thought into up-to-the-minute science-based reality. With verve and patience, he guides readers through the relevant parts of the history of science, for example the invention of spectroscopy, the gradual understanding of how the elements were forged in the big bang and in supernovas, and the more recent and continuing discovery of organic molecules in space. He makes a convincing case that the earth and almost certainly planets throughout the galaxy were richly seeded with complex, mostly carbon-based molecules that were the necessary ingredients and precursors for life. Berkowitz takes us on this journey with vivid detail, often brilliant metaphors, and quotes from the dozens of researchers he interviewed. As a science writer, I know how much hard work and thought went into this masterful and enlightening book. Bravo!

A new STAR in the cosmo-bibliographic firmament!
By Peter Nelson
As a longtime stargazer and lover of all things cosmological, I have probably read 100 books on astronomy and cosmology and the history of these two celestial disciplines, but I was amazed and astonished at all the new information provided by the author of "The Stardust Revolution". I expected to be fascinated by this book, as I enjoy everything remotely related to this subject, but I wasn't expecting to find it as readable and exciting as a fiction thriller! Try this book. You will not be disappointed. Mr. Berkowitz brings such a fresh perspective to mankind's most ancient science that the book is indeed a revolution!

Stardust Revolution rocks!
By Wendell Fraser
I was looking for a book detailing the scientific history and experiments that supported the idea that star dust is indeed the matter of our planet and us....and the matter of alien life forms and planets too! This book is it.

We are canned starstuff that walks around and thinks. We come from exploded stars and so does the Earth you're standing on right now. All of the atoms of your body down to the calcium in your bones was brewed chemically inside a star for billions of years and then it was released into the universe via stars exploding. A stellar pollination!

Maybe We'll Have You Back: The Life of a Perennial TV Guest Star, by Fred Stoller

Fred Stoller has played the annoying schnook in just about every sitcom you’ve seen on TV—Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond, Scrubs, Hannah Montana, My Name Is Earl—and was even a staff writer for Seinfeld, but he’s never found a solid gig. When it comes to Hollywood, it’s a case of always the bridesmaid and never the bride, except in his case he’s always the snarky waiter, the mopey cousin, or Man #2.

This hilarious and bittersweet rags-to-rags story of the hardest-working guy in showbiz follows Fred, who started his career as a stand-up comic, from set to set as he tries to find a permanent home for his oddball character. With candor, Fred shares stories of his great adventures pounding the Hollywood pavement, including a humiliating encounter with Billy Crystal, a disastrous one-night stand with Kathy Griffin, and plenty of awkward run-ins at craft service tables. And he always shares his ups and downs with his skeptical yet loving mother waiting by the phone in Brooklyn.

Everyone can relate to searching for a dream job or their next big break, and will root for Fred as he weaves his way through the cutthroat world of Tinseltown.

From Booklist
Comedic actor Stoller might not be a household name, but he’s been working in Hollywood for 25 years, making a living by scoring guest stints on sitcoms like Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond, and Seinfeld. After getting his start doing stand-up in New York, Stoller made his way to Los Angeles hoping to land the holy grail of acting jobs: a regular role on a television show. The quest proved harder than he’d imagined, but the numerous guest roles he booked involved playing characters that ran the gamut from scrawny construction worker to pesky suitor to goofy waiter. Stoller gets an unexpected break when Larry David offers him a job writing on Seinfeld, but the gig only lasts a season and serves to reinforce Stoller’s passion for acting. He finally lands a regular role on an animated show called Handy Manny playing a talking tool. Stoller’s stories about his experiences on the various studio sets, as well as his brushes with fame, make his memoir an enlightening and entertaining look into the life of a working actor. --Kristine Huntley

A Unique View Of Show Business
By R. Jones
Having read Fred Stoller's very enjoyable Kindle Single, My Seinfeld Year, I was happy to see that he was telling more of his great behind-the-scenes-in-show-business stories in Maybe We'll Have You Back. I wasn't disappointed. He offers a funny, informative and entertaining look at two aspects of show business we don't hear much about - the TV guest star and the voice over artist (with some stories of stand-up comedy thrown in for good measure). This book should be on the "to read" list of every aspiring actor, any fan of stand-up or situation comedy, anyone interested in how TV shows get made, and people who like to laugh. In other words, pretty much everybody. As evidence of how good this book is, I read it while stuffed into a cramped airplane seat and it actually made me forget that I could barely move my legs for four hours.

Touching and Heartfelt... A Must Read
By FelixTheCatastophe
I just finished reading the most amazing book, "Maybe We'll Have You Back: The Life of a Perennial TV Guest Star", written by comedian and actor Fred Stoller. First of all, I received it from Amazon on Tuesday night and started reading it on Wednesday morning on the train. From that point on, I couldn't put it down and basically read all 250+ pages every free chance I had until I finished it moments ago. One word... fantastic.

For people who know me know that I read a lot of books about the entertainment industry and people in the entertainment industry. I especially enjoy books written by actors , comedians and comedic actors and own a bookcase full of them including George Carlin, Jay Mohr, Bruce Campbell, Matty Simmons, Steve Martin, Howard Stern, Denis Leary, etc... the list goes on and on. Fred's book is one of the funniest, entertaining and gut-wrenchingly honest biographies that I've ever read. He speaks openly and honestly about his experiences, his personal relationships and his feelings and truly makes you feel his ups and downs, his triumphs and failures, his excitement and his disappointments. He pulls no punches and wears his heart on his sleeve on every page. If anyone has ever worked in the entertainment industry (especially as an actor) or ever remotely wondered what an actor goes through to achieve his or her dream, you should buy this book. It's worth every penny.

And if you don't know who Fred is, you probably do and don't realize it, chances are he's been on one of your favorite TV shows in the past 25 years... at least once (and sometimes they even had him back).

In-depth, encyclopedic yet fun book
By Amazon Customer
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. So, in all honesty, I am not really into muscle cars, BUT my dad REALLY is and has been for most of his life, and he re-builds and restores these cars. I would consider him to be an expert, so, growing up around him, I'm not completely ignorant on this topic.

The first thing that struck me about the book is the physical quality of it! It is one heavy book since it is printed on smooth, heavy-duty paper. The binding almost allows for the book to lie flat, which is nice. This book would have been the ultimate in quality to me if it were in full color, but everything is in black and white. There are quite a few captioned pictures spread throughout, and though they are not in color, they are clear enough to see important details. And now that I think about it, it's probably not all that important to have color images when you're looking at close-ups of engine or body parts. It only feels lacking when you see a mostly full shot of a car and can't see what beautiful paint color it has on it.

The writing showcases Steve Magnante's encyclopedic knowledge, while still being fairly conversational and easy and interesting to read. It even gets personal with some anecdotes throughout. I'm not really interested in muscle cars, but I think I could read this book all the way through without being bored, especially since all the information is in bite-size chunks. Each entry is about one to three paragraphs in length, which makes this a great book to keep around somewhere you want to sneak in a minute or two of reading here and there. I can't imagine even experts not learning something new since most of the 1001 facts are very technical and specific. This book is a must-have if you have any level of interest in muscle cars! It's a little price-y, but you are paying for a high quality product: both in paper quality and content quality.

I will be passing this book onto my dad as a gift, which I'm sure he will love. I will update this review if he has any special comments on the book, since his perspective is more useful than mine when it comes to the content.

I really wish that this book was part of a series that covered different topics. I am jealous of muscle car enthusiasts who have this book. I would love to read a book written in Magnante's style on a topic I'm passionate about.

A Disappointment from the Highly Respected Nebula Awards
By J. Erbes
(First off, ignore the review by Harriet Klausner. She doesn't actually read the books she reviews, including not reading this one.)

It is tricky to write reviews of speculative fiction books because reader's preferences range so widely from poetry fantasy, vampires, witches, wizards, and Star Trek through hard science fiction physics and cosmology. I'm sure there are readers out there that might love every story in this collection. I was, sadly, not one of those people. If you prefer hard science fiction and perhaps also enjoy Terry Pratchett, Christopher Moore, Jasper Fforde or Tom Holt, you are probably not going to enjoy this collection. If that is the case, save yourself from all manner of literary suffering and read any one of the other scores of fine speculative fiction anthologies that have been published over the years. Out of the 16 stories and poems contained within I only read one story I truly enjoyed--the excerpt from Terry Pratchett's I Shall Wear Midnight (Discworld). This collection was, sadly, the least enjoyable speculative fiction anthology I have read over the past 53 years.

Instead, please do yourself a favor and check out any one of the 29 volumes of "The Year's Best Science Fiction" anthologies edited by Gardner Dozois (I have most of the volumes), or read the exceptionally good Best American Fantasy edited by Ann and Jeff VanderMeer (2008). For decades I read only hard science fiction but "Best American Fantasy" really opened my eyes as to how really really good well-written fantasy can be.

The Winners and Others
By Arthur W Jordin
Nebula Awards Showcase 2012 (2012) is a Speculative Fiction anthology of Nebula Award nominees. It contains the stories and poems that the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers selected as the best in their category for 2011. It includes an introduction, sixteen stories and poems, and four administrative items.

- "Introduction" by James Patrick Kelly & John Kessel -- the editors -- describes the state of the art in comparison to the past.

- "Ponies" by Kij Johnson tied for the Short Story Nebula. It relates a mythical tale about girls and their ponies.

- "The Sultan of the Clouds" by Geoff Landis was nominated for the Novella Nebula. It exposes the heir to the wealthiest family in the Solar System.

- "Map of Seventeen" by Chris Barzak was nominated for the Short Story Nebula. It considers the abyss that follows graduation from high school.

- "And I Awoke and Found Me Here on the Cold Hill's Side" by James Tiptree, Jr. is a 1972 tale that demonstrates why she won the Solstice Award. It presents a peril in dealing with aliens that had escaped the notice of her peers.

- "In the Astronaut Asylum" by Kendall Evens & Samantha Henderson won the Rhysling Award for the Best Long Poem. Its thesis is that astronauts are susceptible to many unexpected stresses that will drive them into psychosis.

- "Pishaach" by Shweta Narayan was nominated for the Short Story Nebula. It follows the life and influences of a young Hindu girl and her obsession with snakes.

- "Blackout/All Clear" excerpt by Connie Willis won the Novel Nebula. It was one tale released as two novels about a family of time travelers.

- "Bumbershoot" by Howard Hendrix won the Dwarf Star Award for the Best Very Short Poem. It considers an umbrella.

- "Arvies" by Adam Troy-Castro was nominated for the Short Story Nebula. It takes a different look at birth and life.

- "How Interesting: A Tiny Man" by Harlan Ellison tied for the Short Story Nebula. It divulges the trials of a man who created a tiny person and the troubles that ensued.

- "The Jaguar House, in Shadow" by Aliette de Bodard was nominated for the Short Story Nebula. It is an Alternate History of the Aztecs and their religion.

- "The Green Book" by Amal El-Mohtar was nominated for the Short Story Nebula. It tells of a book that fascinates its readers.

- "That Leviathan, Whom Thou Hast Made" by Eric James Stone shows a young Mormon dealing with a lifeform at the middle of the sun.

- "I Shall Wear Midnight" excerpt by Terry Pratchett won the Andre Norton Award. It notes the nature of a witch. This award may be the belated recognition of one of the funniest writers in the fantasy genre.

- "To Thea" by Ann K. Schwader won the Rhysling Award for the Best Short Poem. It consoles us for the world we lost.

- "The Lady Who Plucked Red Flowers beneath the Queen's Window" by Rachel Swirsky won the Novella Nebula. It tracks a sorceress through betrayal and summons for millennia.

- "2011 Nebula Award Nominees and Honorees" lists those who were nominated for the awards in the past year.

- "Past Nebula Winners" lists the persons who have won this award from 1965 to 2009. One wonders what happened in 2010.

- "About the Cover" names the artist -- Michael Whelan -- and lists his works and honors. He received a Solstice Award in 2012 for his contributions to the field.

- "About the Editors" contains biographies/bibliographies of the editors of this volume.

These tales somewhat define the state of the art in SF and Fantasy. However, one of the major themes in this volume is the way the nominees are confounded by their works. The editors mention the fluctuations and random directions in speculative fiction and the improbability of predicting trends. These nominees seem to agree wholeheartedly with that thought.

These are the stories that the SFWA finds worth honoring. I found a few very interesting tales in this volume. Others might find authors previously unknown who present plots and characters of interest.

Highly recommended for SF/Fantasy fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of unknown worlds and strange characters. Read and enjoy!

Great collector
By Alan Parker
Varied and fulfilling collection of SF. Exactly the right thing to help endure a boring hospital stay. I enjoyed almost every story, the few fantasy ones were even acceptable to a hard-core high tech fan like me

Anne Frank's Chestnut Tree (Step into Reading), by Jane Kohuth

Hidden away in their Secret Annex in Amsterdam during World War II, Anne Frank and her family could not breathe fresh air or see the blue sky for years. But through an attic window Anne could see the branches of a tall chestnut tree. This small glimpse of nature gave Anne hope and courage. It inspired her writing, which, in turn, inspired the whole world. Jane Kohuth explores Anne Frank's strong belief in the healing power of nature in this Step 3 leveled reader biography for newly independent readers ages 5–8.

From School Library Journal
Gr 2-4–This beginning reader introduces Anne Frank as she admires the chestnut tree that stands outside the window of the Secret Annex. The next statement instantly catches readers' attention: “she had not been outside for 597 days.” Observing it helped her keep track of the passing seasons and calm her emotions. The changes wrought by the Holocaust are described in terms a child can understand: Anne cannot go swimming, is not allowed to go to movies, and must change schools. However, due to the book's controlled vocabulary, some concepts are oversimplified; for example, the term concentration camp is used but not defined, though “Anne's parents knew that when Jews were sent away, they were never heard from again.” Readers are told that “Anne did not survive the war. But her diary did.” They also learn that the chestnut tree no longer stands, but that seedlings from it have been planted all over the world. Like Anne, its legacy continues. The somber colors in Sayles's paintings contribute to the serious tone and historical feel of the story. Students in need of more more context can read Josephine Poole's Anne Frank (Knopf, 2005), which is at a higher reading level.–Jackie Partch, Multnomah County Library, Portland, ORα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
Kohuth introduces beginning readers to Anne Frank, emphasizing her appreciation of the chestnut tree growing outside the Secret Annex, her family’s Amsterdam refuge. After briefly explaining Hitler’s rise to power, laws discriminating against Jews, and the reasons for moving above Mr. Frank’s office, the author details the difficulties of life in hiding and explains that Anne kept a diary named Kitty. Although many familiar elements of this story are omitted (Peter van Pels and his relationship with Anne are never mentioned, for example), Kohuth does recap one diary entry, “Fear,” which expresses Anne’s confidence in the healing power of nature. Of Anne’s death, Kohuth only notes she “did not survive,” focusing instead on the museum that memorializes her wartime years. Sayles’ full-color artwork exudes a dreamy quality, which should help to soften the story’s more sensitive parts. This is less comprehensive than David A. Adler’s A Picture Book of Anne Frank (1993) but will be useful for young patrons who want to learn more about Anne. Grades 1-3. --Kay Weisman

Review
"This brief but powerful introduction to Anne Frank's life uses a format suitable for both newly independent readers and older readers who need simplified text. . . . A sensitive introduction to a young woman whose words continue to live." --Kirkus Reviews

This easy-reader introduction to Anne Frank's life effectively uses [the] theme of nature to offer an abbreviated and accessible overview of Anne's tragic and remarkable life. The summary of life events is appropriately succinct without being oversimplified . . . The tree is an effective central symbol in a story about a young adult holding onto hope . . . this would be a useful text to have on hand for struggling upper-elementary readers involved in Holocaust units or those needing an accessible title for a biography assignment. -- Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

Great introduction to Anne's story, with heart and hope
By Sonia Miller
Jane Kohuth's book introduces young readers to Anne Frank's life and legacy with great skill and tact. With few words she tells the story of a young girl whose life ended tragically, while retaining the message of life and hope Anne wrote of in her own diary.

Teacher Note: I teach kindergarten through 4th grade and am pleased to at long last have a book I can use to introduce Anne Frank. The details Jane has included in the book allows me to focus on different parts of Anne's life as would be appropriate for the different age-levels I teach, the younger students might discuss Anne's love of writing and the inspiration she drew from the chestnut tree, while with my older kids I would bring in more historical background. The language of this book makes it highly accessible to a great range of my students, and the topic makes it a great book for older students who still struggle with reading.

Ideal for Introducing Anne Frank to a Beginning Reader Audience
By E.D.
Despite having to work within Step Into Reading's language requirements, Jane Kohuth retells Anne Frank's life story in a gorgeous, heartfelt way. I got reacquainted with Anne and wept yet again at her tragic, untimely demise. Know, though, that the heart of the story focuses on her time in the attic, growing as a writer and inspired by the great tree outside her window. It is a perfect way to introduce Anne and her legacy to young readers. I am buying the hardcover edition as a keepsake.

A MUST read for children and parents alike
By JSR
I cannot praise this book enough! Anne Frank's story is one the world knows, yet how many know about Anne's sacred relationship with the chestnut tree that grew just outside her Secret Annex? It's a remarkable this story has stayed relatively hidden until now. I am in awe of Kohuth's ability to take a very complicated and serious topic and make it accessible to young readers. Her beautiful prose are paired perfectly with the book's illustrations. This is a MUST read for both parents and families alike. Both you and your child will be inspired by Anne's courage to find hope in the darkest of times. Bravo to Kohuth for sharing this beautiful new story of Anne Frank with the world!
