Definitive secondary source
By Ella Diaz
Stunned Into Being offers readers more than its secondary title suggests. Editor Eliza Rodriguez y Gibson brings together critical essays published in the 1990s and focused on Cervantes’s earlier works, with new analyses of her most recent books of poetry. the arc of the secondary source offers a comprehensive record and future trajectory for the foundational Chicana poet. Further, Rodriguez y Gibson frames the collection, and brilliantly arranged essays, with an introduction that provides key biographical notes, a snapshot of Cervantes’s publishing history, and the major benchmarks of her career. The anthology concludes with a Q&A between scholar Jeanetta Calhoun Mish and Cervantes, which is beautifully transcribed, maintaining the conversational tone in which Cervantes often lectures to audiences both in community settings and in large academic forums. The Q&A also complements the progression of the scholarly essays since several scholarly claims echo in Cervantes’s author responses, further grounding the scholarship in the poet’s biography and intellectual vision of her work.
Turning to the essays selected by Rodriguez y Gibson, which she curates according to the theoretical and historical contexts in which Cervantes wrote and published her poetry, the first essay is an abridged version of Teresa McKenna’s “An Utterance More Pure than Word: Gender and the Corrido Tradition in Two Contemporary Poems.” Originally published in Feminist Measures: Soundings in Poetry and Theory (1994), McKenna’s adapted piece focuses on one of the earliest interventions Chicano/a literary critics made on the canon of American literature—the corrido. As border-ballads of the nineteenth-century disseminated in the U.S. southwest following annexation of the northern territories of Mexico, they reappeared as creative mode for the culturally nationalist Chicano Movement in the 1960s and 1970s. Corridos and their interpretations became firmly established as an androcentric space of cultural production by Chicano artists and poets (think Américo Paredes and Luis Valdez). Securing its place as an archetype and poetic form by several scholars including Ramón Saldívar (1990) and José E. Limón (1992), McKenna’s essay nods to the centrality of the male-centered corrido and its intellectual examination, but then turns to the similarities and differences within Cervantes’s long poems. McKenna traces the moments in which Cervantes’s poems like “Beneath the Shadow of the Freeway” echoes the resistance strategies of the corrido but also provides a sense of distance from the male realm of public voice against colonial, turned state, oppression (8). In other words, McKenna shows us that Cervantes, as a poet, must place herself against the “male-dominated story” that has “become a type of sanctioned official Chicano rhetoric” (8). Written twenty years ago, McKenna’s analysis of Cervantes’s poetry as both working with and against a tradition resounds powerfully in the critical turn toward notions of failure and affect in Chicana/o Studies scholarship in the humanities.
Adhering to the organization of the first section, or criticism of Cervantes’s first books, Emplumada (1981) and From the Cables of Genocide: Poems on Love and Hunger (1991), Rodriguez y Gibson next presents readers with an abridged version of Raúl Villa’s “Between Nationalism and Women’s Standpoint,” chapter five of his important book Barrio Logos (2000). The adapted essay pairs nicely with McKenna’s analysis because he focuses on Cervantes’s “freeway poems” from Emplumada but applies his concept of barriology, a theory and praxis for understanding urban change, like gentrification through rezoning and infrastructural development, with historical events, like colonization and annexation. Concerned with spatial questions posed in both poetry and in the real life of Chicana/o communities, Villa also delves into a brilliant application of a visual art lens provided by Amalia Mesa-Bains (1991) for reading strategies of making and presenting one’s self and doings called la domesticana. Moving the lens for Chicana art onto Cervantes’s poetry, Villa shows readers how to think about women’s work inter-generationally and the negotiations and navigations of the androcentrism explicit in the Chicano Movement and implicit in the invisibility of indigenous knowledges—which are often located in the voices and hands of viejitas, or the grandmothers who know other forms and paths of knowledge (59-61). Cervantes’s freeway poems are concerned with a “different discursive location on the oral-print continuum,” Villa writes, as he maps Cervantes’s sense of place (San Jose, California), which involves multiple temporalities (from Alta Mexico to California, 1848). Beginning the anthology of critical essays with such strong analyses of Cervantes’s earlier work, Rodriguez y Gibson sets the pedagogical pace for the next section, as the anthology moves to Cervantes’s latest books of poetry and turns to global locations, or really intersections, of the Chicana poetic ethos.
In the new criticism section on Cervantes’s Drive: the First Quartet (2006), a poetry anthology that contains five distinct but interconnected books, the essays are diverse in analytical perspectives. There are echoes between the poems discussed, which Rodriguez y Gibson accounts for in the introduction and uses as a point of organization for the essays; but the repetition of analyses of poems like “Bananas” and “Coffee” (from How Far’s the War inside Drive) is not redundant; rather, they offer different views or angles for looking at the poems, further elucidating the visual points that scholars like Tiffany Ana López make when arguing that “Cervantes’s poems function as linguistic photographs, a kind of poetic photojournalism” (192).
In fact, a critical intervention that several scholars make in their analyses of poems from Drive concerns Cervantes’s use of visual art as an origin point for the poetic practice. This is an important departure from traditional notions of objects of study in cultural analysis and further enforces the high aesthetic of her multidisciplinary poetic practice. This point also echoes in the biographical notes Rodriguez y Gibson makes in the introduction, informing readers that, as a literary activist, Cervantes founded Mango Publications in 1974, “at a time when most of Chicano writing was dominated by men” (ix). Alongside the writing of Chicano/a literature in the 1970s, male artists dominated the visual arts; but, as Cervantes’s profound career reveals, women were actively making, producing, and building Chicano/a art and literary infrastructure, whether or not they were acknowledged by vanguard Chicano/a scholars or canonized in American letters.
The section of new criticism offers groundbreaking analyses of Cervantes’s long anticipated Drive (2006). Tanya González’s essay on “Bird Ave” explores the stereotype and poetic performance of “bad girls” from the neighborhood and is a poem in which Cervantes delves into the complexity of the “presenting face” of Chicana adolescence (Mesa-Bains 1990). But González goes one step further, advancing a multidimensional analysis that draws on feminist scholarship on girl culture in the center of fields in Women’s Studies. Likewise, Juan Mah y Busch presents readers with a powerful essay on the origins of Cervantes’s secondary title for Drive. Mah y Busch draws our attention to T.S. Eliot’s poem Four Quartets (ca 1941-1942) and the question of integrity with which he grapples concerning ‘universal’ concerns of ethics and morality. Mah y Busch pushes readers to think differently about Cervantes’s intention with morality, truth-telling, and worth, accounting for Cervantes’s training in her graduate studies regarding the study of value theory and meta-ethics, a philosophical education and background that is often not considered when evaluating Chicana/o poetry.
Mah y Busch’s comparison between a canonical poet and epic work in American literature with Cervantes’s Drive readies readers for the analysis of global Chicana feminism in Rodriguez y Gibson’s “The Poetry of Improbability,” which surveys the evolution of Cervantes’s positionality as a Chicana, an identity of locality, indigeneity, and particular historical context, to an accountability of third world identifications. “Bananas” and “Coffee” are deeply engaging poems that unveil the Chicana-Indigena progressivist’s first world problems with the third world blues. But the evolution of Cervantes as a global feminist is not really a stretch, as she herself roots global feminism within Anzaldúan thought on the cultural borderlands of mestiza consciousness. In the concluding interview section of the book, Cervantes brilliantly paraphrases a complex theoretical frame for Chicana/o Studies, evincing her scholarly legs amid a book that analyzes her poetic masterpieces. Coupled with Gibson y Rodriguez and Tiffany Ana López’s analyses of the performative and visual elements of Drive, (the latter of which is read through lenses of trauma theory), the interview with Cervantes offer students and scholars innovative approaches to reading her canon, a legacy that is very much born in the twenty-first century.

Crescent Moon Rising: The Islamic Transformation of America, by Paul L. Williams

Forty years ago, Muslims in America were a statistically insignificant minority, numbering fewer than one thousand individuals. By contrast, Islam is today the second-largest and fastest growing religion in America, with more than six million adherents.

In Crescent Moon Rising, journalist Paul L. Williams examines the phenomenal rise of Islam in the United States and discusses its implications.

In the first half of the book, the author traces the beginnings of Islam in this country, in particular the rise and influence of the Nation of Islam among African Americans. He emphasizes the impact of the 1965 Hart-Cellar Act, which abolished national-origin quotas and led to successive waves of Muslim immigrants, who entered this country from Palestine, Kuwait, Iraq, Southeast Asia, Africa, Turkey, and other parts of the world.

In the second half, Williams considers statistical studies of American Muslims regarding age groups, family size, professional affiliations, annual income, and religious and political commitments. He also addresses a number of disturbing concerns about some aspects of the Muslim presence in America. These include: the connections between many American mosques with Saudi benefactors who promote an ultra-orthodox, anti-Western agenda; the existence of Muslim paramilitary training grounds recruiting ex-convicts; and the ties of even self-described moderate Muslim spokespersons with more politically radical elements.

Informative and at times controversial, Crescent Moon Rising clearly shows that Islam will be a force to reckon with for some time in America.

Review
"A sobering wake-up call in an increasingly dark time, Crescent Moon Rising chronicles a threat that the political and media establishment is determined to ignore and deny. But ignoring and denying it won't make it go away, and Paul Williams's warning will appear more and more prophetic as time goes by."
- Robert Spencer, Author of The Myth of Islamic Tolerance

"Meticulously researched and vitally important for everyone seeking the unbiased truth about the rise of Islam in the United States, this masterfully written book offers indispensable and eye-opening historical insight. If I had to choose just one book on this critically important issue, this is it."
- Douglas J. Hagmann, Investigator, director of the Northeast Intelligence Network, and host of The Hagmann & Hagmann Report

"Crescent Moon Rising is an amazing, chronological account of the history of Islam and its rise in America. While it is intended for the average public, its massive amount of information will serve as documentation for future researchers and historians. Most importantly, it refutes the claims that Islam has always been part of America's story. A must-read to expand your knowledge."
- Susanne M. Reyto, Author of Pursuit of Freedom

Profound
By B. Morgan
This is not my usual area of reading but I do enjoy Wlliams' books. Theyre fascinating. I liked this book. In fact I really liked it. Last night I started reading it and finshed it today. While the topic is profound it's not a difficult read. Some of the demographic statistics were stunning and made me pause to wonder where the future is headed. Williams is a master at weaving together these statistics and facts making for a great read.

Taught to Tolerate Intolerance
By Edward Vaughn
Fascinating, intriguing and ultimately terrifying, this book points out how we have been brought to believe that tolerating intolerance is something other than insanity. As Islam has managed to slither its way into our consciousness, the discussion of its lack of moral values (or, even more correctly, its barbaric values) has been bullied aside in an effort to accommodate values that are antithetical and inevitably destructive to our own. Our best intentions and our finest sense of equality is being used against us to present savagery as equal to (or, in the minds of some, even higher than) the values of Western Civilization. A stunning reversal of reality. And we are doing it to ourselves. Here's the pattern: They demand, we acquiesce and they demand more. For a further explication of this, you might wish to read Stealth Jihad: How Radical Islam is Subverting America without Guns or Bombs or even Understanding Muhammad: A Psychobiography of Allah's prophet.

The hunger for local food has reached new heights, and rooftops can provide the space that cities need to bring fresh, organic produce to tables across North America.

The first full-length book to focus entirely on rooftop agriculture, Eat Up views this growing movement through a practitioner's lens, explaining:

  • Structural, access, and infrastructural considerations
  • Zoning and building codes
  • Proven growing techniques
  • Business and marketing strategies

This graphically rich guide provides inspiration and advice to aspiring growers through photographs of successful rooftop farms and gardens and interviews with industry professionals. Easy-to-use checklists and a decision tree are included to help gauge the viability of each unique rooftop opportunity. Challenges in Chemistry Graduate Education: A Workshop Summary, by Committee on Challenges in Chemistry Graduate Education, Board on Chemi

Chemistry graduate education is under considerable pressure. Pharmaceutical companies, long a major employer of synthetic organic chemists, are drastically paring back their research divisions to reduce costs. Chemical companies are opening new research and development facilities in Asia rather than in the United States to take advantage of growing markets and trained workforces there. Universities, especially public universities, are under significant fiscal constraints that threaten their ability to hire new faculty members. Future federal funding of chemical research may be limited as the federal budget tightens. All of these trends have major consequences for the education of chemistry graduate students in U.S. universities.

To explore and respond to these intensifying pressures, the Board on Chemical Sciences and Technology held a workshop in Washington, DC, on January 23-24 2012, titled "Graduate Education in Chemistry in the Context of a Changing Environment." The workshop brought together representatives from across the chemical enterprise, representing leaders and future leaders of academia, industry, and government. The goal of the workshop was not to come to conclusions, but to have an open and frank discussion about critical issues affecting chemistry graduate education, such as the attraction and retainment of the most able students to graduate education, financial stressors on the current support model and their implications for the future model, competencies needed in the changing job market for Ph.D. chemists, and competencies needed to address societal problems such as energy and sustainability.

Challenges in Chemistry Graduate Education: A Workshop Summary is organized into six chapters and summarizes the workshop on "Graduate Education in Chemistry in the Context of a Changing Environment."

New Wings: (Book One of The Guardian Chronicles), by Donna Stanley

Why is it that when we pray for the supernatural, we are surprised when it shows up?

Seventeen-year-old Olivia Stanton knows the Bible says guardian angels exist, but assumes they only show up when people are dying or need to be saved from some kind of sudden disaster...until her own guardian angel appears to her in the form of a handsome blonde-haired, blue-eyed guy her own age. As Olivia gets to know Mike, she begins to see angels--both good and evil--on a regular basis, and quickly learns how many misconceptions she had about the spiritual realm.

Will Mike be able to prepare Olivia for the daunting spiritual battle about to overtake her small town before it destroys her and everyone she cares about?

great novel for teens about spiritual warfare
By Joan N.
Donna has a teenage daughter who loves to read about the supernatural. When she couldn't find a suitable book for her daughter that wasn't about vampires and witches, she decided to write one herself.

This is a great book for teens. It reminded me of the Peretti books because we readers get to see the angels and demons at work. Seventeen year old Olivia is the heroine (named after Donna's daughter). She can see her guardian angel, Mike. He protects her several times and encourages her in her prayer life. Olivia finds that there are other people, although few, who can see into the spirit realm as she can.

Donna tackles some important issues for teens in this novel. Be prepared. The novel covers some serious topics, like cutting , date rape, bullying, and other issues confronting teens today. Some of the scenes are descriptive (although nothing I found offensive). Because of the serious nature of the topics in this novel, I would recommend it to older teens, juniors and seniors in high school. I think it might be a bit much for younger teens.

The lessons Olivia learns in this novel are many. Perhaps the most prominent is the importance of prayer. Olivia and her friends pray, responding to the prompting of the Holy Spirit and release the angels to do their work. What an encouragement to teens to pray, knowing that they are taking part in the spiritual warfare going on around them.

Whenever there is fiction about the supernatural, I pay particular attention. I am very happy with Donna's novel. Theologically, I think it is right on.

I really enjoyed this novel. If you would like a novel for your teen to read that is a page turner as well as instructive and encouraging, this is the novel.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from a publicity group for the purpose of this review.

Highly recommend this novel for those that love spiritual warfare novels!!! It's life changing!
By Pirate2240
"When we pray for the supernatural, why are we surprised when it actually shows up?"

What an exceptional tagline that immediately made me want to pick up this novel, New Wings by author Donna Stanley. Ever since my first experience with spiritual warfare novels involving angels and demons living among us in the unseen realm through Frank Peretti's amazing Darkness novels, I've been searching for more just like it. Thankfully Donna has come through for me in this latest endeavor of hers. This is definitely a novel geared for young adults but I found such wisdom between the pages I just had to share my thoughts on this novel.

The story takes us into the heart of Olivia Stanton who has always wanted to see her guardian angel. She prays for it and soon God takes her up on the challenge. Her angel Mike appears to her as a teen driving a red Camaro watching her in the high school parking lot. Not really sure who he is at the time, Olivia gets spooked one day driving home and tries to lose Mike as he follows her in his car. When she runs out of gas, Mike offers to get her some gas and sends her on her way. Over the next few days, Olivia soon learns that Mike is her guardian angel and is sent to help prepare her for the spiritual needs of her high school friends. She meets Mike in her dreams who shows her that a close friend is cutting and if she doesn't intervene, she will commit suicide. It is then that Olivia begins to see how God can use her prayers and praise to impact the spiritual world in powerful ways.

Slowly she begins to see how people around her are being influenced and manipulated by demons as well as angels and just what she can do as a prayer warrior for Jesus who can seen into the spiritual realm. But even Olivia isn't perfect and finds herself falling under the temptation of finding a boy who will love her and fails to pray about it first. She soon finds herself in a bad situation with a boy who wants nothing to do with falling in love with Olivia and is merely a player. Soon she learns that not everything she faces will be easy and that each day is an opportunity to draw closer to God and that the most powerful weapon a believer possesses is their ability to pray.

I received the novel, New Wings by Donna Stanley compliments of Glass Roads Public Relations and Creation House for my honest review and received no monetary compensation for a favorable one. In light of all the teens paranormal novels inundating the book market, I am relieved to see a breath of fresh air in Donna's novel. It does not imply a worship of angels and instead shows teens how their prayers impact the spiritual world we can't always see. In one situation, Olivia's friend Christina asks her to volunteer at a homeless shelter and Olivia is repulsed and afraid based on a situation she encountered when she was younger, but Mike encourages her to go anyway. In the end, Olivia sees the power of what her actions can do to bless the lives of the people she meets at the homeless shelter serving lunch and God gives her the opportunity to see them through His eyes. This is such a must read novel for any one who loves novels on spiritual warfare. I rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars and will be adding this one to my permanent library. I only hope that Donna continues to writing more in this genre. I think the impact will be life changing. I know just reading this novel has already changed my own prayer life.

Twilight for Christians
By Michal A. Joyner
I loved this book. I bought it when I kept seeing it discussed on Facebook. The topic interested me because I truly believe in Angels. Unlike Olivia, I've never seen mine. The book is cleaver, and I'm eager for the second book to see how Olivia deals with the challenges of college.

Fight the Power!: A Visual History of Protest Among the English Speaking Peoples, by Sean Michael Wilson, Benjamin Dickson

Named one of Rough Trade’s Best Books of 2013

According to Gandhi, the Four Stages of Protest are as follows: First they ignore you. Then they ridicule you. Then they fight you. Then you win!

In Fight the Power!, comics authors Sean Michael Wilson and Benjamin Dickson team up with illustrators Hunt Emerson, John Spelling, and Adam Pasion to show how this process has been played out again and again throughout history--and has slowly but surely led to hard-won rights for the people along the way. Focusing on the English-speaking nations, Wilson and Dickson chronicle the struggles of the Luddites and Swing Riots in the early 1800s, through the Irish Rebellions that lasted through 1922; from the suffragettes in 1918 to Rosa Parks and the bus boycott of the mid-1950s; from the trial of Nelson Mandela to the Occupy movement that has only just begun. By illuminating the variety of protests--and the valuable connections among them--through an accessible art form, Fight the Power! shows that there is a point to the struggle, fight by fight, win by win.

Review
"Throughout human history, social change has never been doled out by those very few that hold power, but taken by the collective with a common need for justice (like not to starve or be worked to death for pennies). Fight the Power harnesses a chunk of this history and graphically illuminates it with humor and eloquence. It reminds us of the struggles that, against the odds, brought us a better world and empowers us to carry those actions into the future."—Peter Kuper, Co-founder, World War 3 Illustrated and artist/ writer for Mad magazine's Spy vs Spy

"An accessible and engaging introduction to protestors in history. If you care about social change, read it!"—Mary Talbot, author of Dotter of Her Father's Eyes (Costa Biography Award winner)

Fight the Power!
By Nicholas Heartland
An entertaining and informative read for anyone interested in social activism and its history. Writers Sean Michael Wilson and Benjamin Dickson join forces to tell us some of the key struggles for social change in our history, from the early 1800s to the present day, in a graphic narrative brilliantly complemented with art by Adam Pasion, John Spelling and underground comics icon Hunt Emerson.

Fight the Power sympathises with the oppressed and highlights the importance of protest in our society, reminding us that we can and always have fought against oppression. It doesn't matter if your interests lie in history, race, politics or protest, this book will keep you reading from start to finish. Of the 14 short stories included here, particular favourites include "Fragging", in which Hunt Emerson does a brilliant job at bringing Sean's script to life and telling the story through the art, and "The Trial of Nelson Mandela", which I think is the most impressive collaboration between Ben Dickson and John Spelling in the book.

The final chapter of the book takes a look at the Occupy Movement; background, developments and quotes. It's inclusion in the book allows us to see it as part of a long history of struggle against the ruling elite. For anyone after the hard facts, a section at the end of the book details rights won over the past 200 years.

So order your copy of Fight the Power and find out what it really means to be one of the 99% -- you won't be disappointed!

Ever wonder why protesters sometimes get violent?
By M. S. Wallen
I have to admit this book was a great starter on several big movements that I (and probably you) really should know more about.

As they say in their blurb, there are MANY more protest movements worldwide worth covering, but this book is a kind of response to Churchill's 'History of the English Speaking Peoples' which largely celebrates the 'great men'. This book celebrates the 'great people'.

It follows several historical protest movements from their peaceful and information-spreading beginnings, through frustration and constant rebuttal into louder and sometimes more aggressive forms of protest, as it often ends up the only way to be heard in a society that denies their very existence.

Of course, many of these protests begin because of the unfairness, aggression and/or violence suffered by people in the first place.

Definitely worth a read and a space on your bookshelf.
