Who is killing the celebrated bouquinistes of Paris?

Max—an elderly Paris bookstall owner—is abducted at gunpoint. His friend, Hugo Marston, head of security at the US embassy, looks on helplessly, powerless to do anything to stop the kidnapper. Marston launches a search, enlisting the help of semiretired CIA agent Tom Green. Their investigation reveals that Max was a Holocaust survivor and later became a Nazi hunter. Is his disappearance somehow tied to his grim history, or even to the mysterious old books he sold?

On the streets of Paris, tensions are rising as rival drug gangs engage in violent turf wars. Before long, other booksellers start to disappear, their bodies found floating in the Seine. Though the police are not interested in his opinion, Marston is convinced the hostilities have something to do with the murders of these bouquinistes. Then he himself becomes a target of the unknown assassins.

With Tom by his side, Marston finally puts the pieces of the puzzle together, connecting the past with the present and leading the two men, quite literally, to the enemy's lair. Just as the killer intended.

"Pryor's steady and engrossing debut combines Sherlockian puzzle solving with Eric Ambler-like spy intrigue. With a cast of characters you want to know better and a storyline cloaked in World War II betrayals . . . the author winningly blends contemporary crime with historical topics." ---Library Journal Starred Review

Captures the flavor of Paris
By Auntie Annie
Interesting story of the book world in Paris. Of Hugo, his love life, his ex CIA friend, spies, and all flavored by the City of Lights. Hugo's government job does not keep him from doing some sleuthing on the side -- even if his boss would prefer it did.

Evolving: The Human Effect and Why It Matters, by Daniel J. Fairbanks

This persuasive, elegantly written book argues that understanding evolution has never mattered more in human history. The author uses evidence from archaeology, geography, anatomy, biochemistry, radiometric dating, cell biology, chromosomes, and DNA to establish the inescapable conclusion that we evolved and are still evolving. He also explains in detail how health, food production, and human impact on the environment are dependent on our knowledge of evolution. This is essential reading for gaining a fuller appreciation of who we are, our place in the great expanse of life, and the importance of our actions.

Review
"With so many excellent books on evolution available, it’s hard to imagine another one with anything new in it. Fairbanks succeeds with a whole array of original examples that demonstrate not only the truth of evolution, but also its impact on human life and society."
-Victor J. Stenger New York Times bestselling author of God and the Folly of Faith: The Incompatibility of Science and Religion

"This book provides a compact overview of the results of many lines of research, especially in genetics, which continue to deepen our knowledge of evolution. Anyone who wonders about the practical value and importance of understanding the processes of evolution will benefit from reading it."
-Eric Meikle, National Center for Science Education

"This is an important book. Fairbanks presents an overwhelming case for the correctness of evolutionary theory. It is engagingly written, with many personal glimpses, and the technical material is clearly presented and understandable. Evolving should be essential reading for anyone who wishes to be an informed citizen."
-Allan Franklin, Professor of physics, University of Colorado, and coauthor of Ending the Mendel-Fisher Controversy

About the Author

Another brilliant book by Daniel Fairbanks!
By Dave
There have been some amazing books on evolution that have been published in the past decade. Two of the very best are by Daniel Fairbanks. "Relics of Eden" demonstrates the overwhelming evidence of our evolution that is found in our DNA. Before reading Relics of Eden I had already read many books on evolution, but I was still blown away by the overwhelming evidence presented in the book.

"Evolving: The Human Effect and Why It Matters" also presents a great amount of evidence of human evolution from our DNA; a lot of the DNA evidence presented in "Evolving" can be found in "Relics of Eden" but there is also a lot of new DNA evidence in the book. "Evolving" also demonstrates the clear evidence of our evolution from fossils, embryology, anatomy, etc. I flew right through this book; not because it was dumbed down but because of the author's ability to explain complex ideas in a way that is very easy to understand.

The first two-thirds of the book seemed to be aimed at demonstrating just how overwhelming the evidence of our evolution is, while the last third of the book showed why evolutionary biology matters. Sure, its really awesome to be able to know a lot about our origins and the history of life, but the chapters on our health and our food show why it is vital that evolutionary biology is taught in every school.

Buy this book! Every single chapter is filled with fascinating information that I had never come across before. I think that Daniel Fairbanks is the most underrated author of popular books on evolution. Dawkins, Fairbanks, and Shubin are the three best alive today, in my opinion (sure Shubin's only written one book, but "Your Inner Fish" is amazing!!!).

Fairbanks Presents a Good Case for Evolution
By Book Fanatic
This book contains two main parts. The first part is the evidence for human evolution and the second part is the importance of evolution to current issues like health, food, and environment.

The first part on the evidence for human evolution is about 2/3 of the book and in my opinion was the strongest. The presentation on the shared structures, changes in hominid skulls and pelvises was excellent as was the genetic evidence. This part of the book makes a really strong case for the grand unifying nature of evolutionary theory.

The second part on the importance of evolution in things like health and food was interesting but to me was neither as compelling nor as convincing. I understand what he is saying here but I don't think it is controversial. I don't even think young earth creationists dispute the kind of bacterial/viral evolution or plant and animal domestication and selection discussed in this part.

In any case this book overall, and especially the first part, is a very good case for human evolution and is therefore recommended. I remember thinking about ordering his previous book "Relics of Eden" at one point and never did. Now that I have read this one I'm going to take a look at that one as well.

I have evolved to love this book!
By fenx1200
Right from the beginning the author clearly spells out that evolution is both a fact and a theory. It is a fact that the mechanisms (components) of evolution have been repeatedly observed and documented to such an extent that they can no longer be reasonably disputed. It is a theory according to the various hypotheses, laws, and facts that are now documented that define the overall processes of evolution in action. The author does an excellent job of taking one on a journey through the evidence supporting evolution, from the fossil record, to the genetic evidence, to the geographic record, to the science behind genetics. The author brings real world problems concerning genetics into perspective. Problems that can cascade down to humans such as GMO foods, cattle, growth hormones, and antibiotics. A very comprehensive and detailed book that should be included in everyone's personal library.

Starship: Flagship, by Mike Resnick

The date is 1970 of the Galactic Era, almost three thousand years from now, and the Republic, created by the human race but not yet dominated by it, finds itself in an all-out war against the Teroni Federation, an alliance of races that resent Man’s growing military and economic power.
The rebel starship, the Theodore Roosevelt, under the command of Wilson Cole, is preparing to lead Cole’s ragtag armada into the Republic, even though he is outnumbered thousands to one. Cole is convinced that the government has become an arrogant and unfeeling political entity and must be overthrown.

The trick is to avoid armed conflict with the vast array of ships, numbering in the millions, in the Republic’s Navy. For a time Cole’s forces strike from cover and race off to safety, but he soon sees that is no way to conquer the mightiest political and military machine in the history of the galaxy. He realizes that he must reach Deluros VIII, the headquarters world of the Republic (and of the race of Man), in order to have any effect on the government at all – but Deluros VIII is the best-protected world in the Republic.

But a new threat looms on the horizon. Cole, the Valkyrie, David Copperfield, Sharon Blacksmith, Jacovic, and the rest of the crew of the Teddy R face their greatest challenge yet, and the outcome will determine the fate of the entire galaxy.

From Publishers Weekly
Hugo-winner Resnick sets his fifth Starship novel, a classic sprawling space opera, in the vast Birthright universe. Newcomers would probably prefer having the informative appendix shifted to a prologue, but even those who skip ahead will find themselves drawn in by the valiant struggle waged by Wilson Cole and his motley assortment of allies (including an alien convinced he is the real David Copperfield, and an eight-handed criminal kingpin) against the nameless interstellar Republic. The odds are appropriately daunting: while their foes have three and a half million ships, Cole can only muster about 800, forcing the rebel leader to rely on his wits rather than strength to prevail. The cleverness of his schemes and the interesting political struggles will remind genre TV fans of Babylon 5. The only real flaw is a rather contrived conclusion. (Dec.)

From Booklist
Wilson Cole heads a vastly outnumbered, largely out-gunned armada of rebels, and Teddy R, his ship, is wanted across the galaxy. He is absolutely convinced that the Republic is hopelessly corrupt, or at least its top politicians are, and that somehow he must overthrow it/them. His people can’t afford armed conflict, so he wages a brilliant war of propaganda and trickery. Of course, in order to make sure it has the correct effect, he must get to Deluros VIII, capital of the Republic, and deal with the politicos himself. When he and his loyal crew, understandably a bit concerned about his mysterious plans as they travel closer to the heart of the Republic, reach the Deluros system, there’s another threat to deal with, which means that events take an entirely unexpected turn. Cole thinks well on his feet, though, and turns the tables quite nicely. Fun, fast-paced, laced with a satisfying amount of moral quandary, Cole and crew’s adventures in rebellion constitute excellent entertainment. --Regina Schroeder

Unbelievable
By Don E. Wheeler, MD
If you were to read books of the "Starship" series one-after-the-other, you would find a tremendous about of repeated material -- themes, expressions, situations, even paragraphs lifted from one book and pasted into a later one. Indeed, if I had a nickel for every time the captain wished he had 50 'Vals' so that he could conquer the Republic . . . Well, you get my drift.

The last book, "Flagship" is so unbelievable it's pitiful. A Republic with 60,000 inhabited planets has a central administrative world that can be take by surprise by not just one, but two different small military forces is a nonsense.

I really am sorry I bought the last two books, especially for the price they are offered as kindle books. I would recommend other readers find other examples of space opera to follow, and abandon this one.

Shame on me
By Gary Gibson
Deus ex machina

Latin for "god from the machine"; is a plot device whereby a seemingly inextricable problem is suddenly and abruptly solved with the contrived and unexpected intervention of some new character, ability, or object.

Never mind the plot inconsistencies and the poor character development, the real kicker in this book was the incredibly contrived plot device to wrap up the series. The coincidental timing of the attack by the previously unknown aliens was just dreadful.

Now, I admit it. I read the whole series, mainly because they were light and fluffy, very easy to pick up and very easy to put down. White bread books really. I should have stopped after the first book, but I like to give an author more than one book, plus, the good reviews fooled me and led me on. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice (or five times), shame on me. Never again shall I read one of your books Mr. Resnick.

Try reading the Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell instead.

Warlord of Space
By Amazon Customer
What else to call a man who breaks an oath, acquiesces to a mutiny, steals a ship to desert his chain of command? -Not all in the same book, but a disappointment as a Officer. Under those conditions, will he fall prey to megalomania?
Wilson Cole could not have been portrayed in a single book, but five is stretching it. It would be intriguing to make him into a Caesar and follow the empire he builds. At the ending, you are left wondering.
Otherwise, it is weak science and military strategy.
For an interesting look into the author's motivation, read Appendix 5, Ethics.

The Wilde sisters of Midnight return in this thrilling novel of romantic suspense, perfect for fans of Maya Banks, Allison Brennan, and Lori Foster.

IT’S ALWAYS HOTTER AT MIDNIGHT.

The winds of fate have blown cruelly on a family that once had it all: money, power, prestige. The lives of three beautiful daughters were forever changed when, on a sultry night in Midnight, Alabama, a murder-suicide shattered the Wilde family. The girls grew up to live separate lives but now have returned home, each to face a danger no one can see coming.

Former homecoming queen Samantha surprised everyone by going into law enforcement, but beneath her tough façade lies a wary heart. The tragedy that struck her family is an ever-present reminder that nothing is ever as it seems. When the man she loves, Quinn Braddock, a doctor and Iraq war veteran, is accused of murder, Samantha assumes the worst. Brokenhearted, her confidence shattered, she returns to Midnight. Though exonerated, Quinn still feels the sting of Samantha’s doubt, but he can’t forget his feelings for her and follows her. Soon after his arrival, a shocking murder terrifies the town, and once again, Quinn is under suspicion. This time, Samantha will not turn her back on the man she loves—even if it means walking into a killer’s trap.

Police officer Samantha Wilde thinks she&'s in a relationship with surely the most perfect man on earth, Dr. Quinn Braddock, but his perfection is called into question when he becomes the prime suspect in the brutal murder of his despised ex-wife, Charlene. Though Samantha&'s investigation results in charges being dropped, her initial doubts lead to a rift between the lovers that they struggle to mend, even as Charlene&'s killer targets them. This is a fine example of romantic suspense, with an alpha hero who has a sensitive side, a tough and feisty heroine who sometimes acts like a damsel waiting to be swept off her feet, and plenty of twists and turns. Quinn Braddock is hands down one of my FAVORITE Heroes of 2013
By Lisa M. Filipe
I wish I had half the imagination that Ella Grace does...what an AMAZING, TWISTED, MASTER MIND of a Romance...Definitely a Top Read for 2013.

The Wilde sisters are back and this time sister Samantha is up against not just starting up the PI business with her sisters back in her hometown, but trying her best to fall out of love with Quinn Braddock, her ex, and the man accused of murdering his ex-wife.

I know...sounds CRAZY, and it is, CRAZY GOOD, CRAZY SEXY, CRAZY TWISTED, and CRAZY ADDICTING. I think this series just gets better and better with each book. I loved Samantha and Quinn's book, the heartbreak, the unbroken connection between them, the fact that he comes to claim what is his, and this time he isn't letting her go as easily as he did the first time....Quinn....MEGA MEGA SWOON ladies...that is all I have to say.

I can't WAIT to see where this series is going and what will happen next, but if Ella Grace is writing it...I know we are in for a Wilde Ride!! If you are a Romance Suspense fan, MIDNIGHT LIES is a MUST READ for 2013!!

Happy Reading and Enjoy!!

WILDEFIRE SERIES
#1 Midnight Secrets
#2 Midnight Lies

★★★★★
4.9 of 5 stars

About the book:

Before I start about the book - I need to tell you to read MIDNIGHT SECRETS first!
It will help explain a few things - and - well - it's an amazing book!!!

Now about Midnight Lies...
We start the book around the same time as Midnight Secrets - where we followed Savannah Wilde and Zach's story.

We're in Atlanta, and witness Charlene Braddock's murder. Charlene is the ex-wife of Quinn - who has been Samantha's boyfriend for the last 4 months. Samantha, of course is our heroine - she's one of the Wilde triplets from Midnight, Alabama.
She's working as a homocide detective and Quinn is a successful doctor.
When Quinn is arrested for the murder of his unlikable ex-wife - he thinks that Sam will do everything to prove he's innocent. She's the one person he believes in. But, scarred from her past, Sam is doesn't know what to think about anything. And even though the charges are soon dropped - there have been too much hurtful words and actions for Sam and Quinn to get back together.
Incredibly hurt and stubborn they both do their best to keep on living/existing and doing their best to forget each other... uhm yep - not happening ☺

Five months later Quinn finds out Samantha was responsible for getting his charges dropped - and he leaves for Midnight, Alabama - to apologize...

Sam and Quinn meet again - and we meet all the great people from book 1 again - especially Savannah & Zack!
But everything is not as easy as it could be, of course.
- both Quinn and Sam are still sad and hurt and stubborn
- the sister's new Security Agency WILDEFIRE has its first case: protecting a witness against a drug Lord from Florida.
(There's another story brewing in Florida - I guess that will be Sabrina's story in book 3)
- a good-looking stranger appears in town - and he seeems very interested in Samantha
- there will be lots of kisses and erotic encounters ☺☺☺
- there will be attempts on someone's life
- there might even be another murder
(and who better to blame than Quinn!)
- there will be a Thanksgiving dinner
- something very dangerous and scary will happen
and we have to hope that everybody will survive and that there will be a happy end ☺
BUT THAT'S IT.....
I'm not telling you more about the story - it would spoil your reading pleasure ☺
- you have to read it yourself!
And please DO - read it, I mean!

I LOVED THE BOOK!

I couldn't wait to get started on Samantha's story. I loved Savannah's book soooo much - and this one didn't disappoint. It is different than the first one - that much I have to say - which doesn't make it bad - but it doesn't have the sweet and cute and heartbreaking beginning we had in book 1 ☺ ok - the heartbreaking thing - yes! It hurt my little ♥ to see Quinn arrested and Sam not believe him :( The poor guy!
Sam and Quinn are really great characters - and pretty good-looking ones too, of course ;)
I loved how they can't stay away from each other.
And how the other 2 triplets want to protect their sister from more hurt.
Quinn did get on my nerves a bit, with his commintment phobia - but that's to be expected with an ex-wife like his and with his weird parents as role models.
You can guess who the bad guy is pretty soon - but you don't know why or what or how or wtf? ☺ Well - I guessed the who and why and what's pretty soon - but there were still things I didn't guess!
The suspense part towards the end is really scary and you will sooo be rooting for the good guys to win ☺

All in all it was the perfect romantic suspense!

Fantastic Book!
By Emily McGee
I am a long time Ella Grace aka Christy Reece fan. She writes captivating stories that I tend to devour in a day or two, schedule permitting. Midnight Lies definitely delivered the same heart-stopping suspense and mind blowing action, in and out of the bedroom :)

Quinn and Samantha start out with a no-strings relationship that comes to a quick halt. With Quinn being accused of murdering his ex-wife, the trust between him and Sam is tenuous at best, and they just cannot muster through the rough patch together. Sam jets off back to her hometown to be with her sisters. The triplets, Savannah, Samantha and Sabrina have recently been through the ringer with news of their parents murder just coming to light. Samantha is back in Midnight, Alabama to heal and start a private investigation agency with her sisters. To her shock Quinn follows soon after, to rekindle their relationship but also do a little healing of his own. These two have been through more than one person should, and two scared souls don't always equal a whole one. Sam and Quinn know they have a mountain of problems to deal with but they can't seem to get past their doubts in one another.

To me, Quinn is such a peculiar character. His mannerisms and dedication to getting Sam back are a sight to behold. With all he has been through he still refuses to admit defeat. Sam has been dealt just as crappy a hand as Quinn, and eventually resolves to re-dedicate herself to their relationship. Ms. Grace is known for taking two broken hearts and making a healed one. Her heroines are just as kickass as their heroes. I have to admire Samantha for standing by Quinn throughout the ordeals in this book, she refuses to let him run. Quinn is one of those men that love to misplace guilt onto themselves. I have this image in my mind, Quinn is packing all of this guilt into a suitcase and Samantha is next to him unpacking each bit.

The twists and turns in Midnight Lies had me setting aside my e-reader a couple of times. Ella Grace writes intense story lines that are frightening because they seem too real to be fiction, but it's hard to swallow that kind of reality. Midnight Lies sucked me in until I was completely submerged in the characters' lives. When I had to take a break I felt bereft, like I was just on a rollercoaster and then it came to a screeching halt and my head is still spinning. The Willdefire books have bits of overlap so information that I thought would be solved in this one is actually for the next book. I was guessing the whole time where this story was going to end up. Suffice to say I did not have a clue until the last couple of chapters. Midnight Lies is a magnificent suspense/contemporary romance book and while you're waiting for it to come out go pick up Midnight Secrets for Savannah's story!

Happy Reading!

Keep this book within easy reach--you'll refer to it again and again
By Alison
Complete French All-In-One is much more than a grammar guide. Annie Heminway's explanations of the origins of the French language and the differences between French and English were so interesting that I ended up reading the book cover to cover. This book opens a new approach to how to learn and improve language skills for students (and teachers) of the French language. The exercises in each chapter and answer key provide instant practical applications of the lessons in a format conducive to self-assessment and improvement. As a translator, I will frequently reach for this book to finesse the nuances of translating multiple possibilities of the past tense.

Useful for Learners at all levels
By the dainty one
Bought this recently, and have been using it since. It is very easy to understand with a lot of exercises for practice. It helps with clarifying grammar for the 'not so new' learner of French (I needed help with the fundamentals, that's why I bought it). A good buy to supplement other grammar books.

Excellent book
By Lady Laughing
I am very impressed with this book. I have been taking immersion classes in France and wanted to prepare for my next set. I picked up several French grammar books (I am intermediate) but I find this one is most helpful. She gives great explanations of why things are the way they are. Exercises with the answers in the back. I am working through it at 20 pages a day. Very helpful!

The Good Struggle: Responsible Leadership in an Unforgiving World, by Joseph L. Badaracco Jr.

Leadership is struggle

The question of how to lead successfully and responsibly is crucially important in our uncertain, high-pressure, turbulent world. In this book, Harvard Business School Professor Joseph Badaracco answers this question in practical and, at times, provocative ways.

Leaders today are surrounded by what Badaracco calls “the new invisible hand”—powerful, pervasive markets that touch and shape almost everything. As a result, understanding the inevitability and importance of struggle is critical. And leaders must go a step further to create what Badaracco calls “the good struggle” in order to meet their goals at work, as well as their goals in life.

The Good Struggle helps you meet the relentless challenges of being a leader today by identifying the most important questions you should be asking yourself. New answers to these questions can be found by watching leaders in dynamic settings, especially entrepreneurs. The conditions entrepreneurs have always faced—intense competition, scarce resources, and unforgiving markets—are true now for the rest of us, and they offer valuable, practical lessons about struggling and succeeding in volatile and uncertain environments.

If “the joy of life is in the struggle,” as one thoughtful entrepreneur put it, The Good Struggle can help you find meaning in your work, stay focused on what matters despite the turbulence around you, and keep you on the path to leading successfully and responsibly.

ADVANCE PRAISE for The Good Struggle:

Gail McGovern, President and CEO, American Red Cross—
“Badaracco has written a valuable book that examines the evolving fundamentals of leadership in a contemporary world filled with greater uncertainty and more intense market pressures.”

Tom Stemberg, Managing General Partner, Highland Consumer Fund; Chairman Emeritus, Staples, Inc.—
“Joseph Badaracco defines the essence of success in building a business: Live with the reality one competes in, but never stop dreaming about what might be possible.”

Ann Fudge, former Chairman and CEO, Young & Rubicam Brands—
“Leading responsibly does not equate to leading successfully. It is indeed a ‘struggle.’ This book challenges the reader to develop the right path for the long term.”

Ronald K. Machtley, President, Bryant University—
“This book’s message is powerful: True leadership is forged from the personal crucible of struggle, values, and choices that justify the risks and time spent being a leader.”

Kunio Nakamura, former President, Panasonic Corporation—
“In this book, Joseph Badaracco poses vital questions for leaders. In these times of turmoil and uncertainty, leaders must face these questions head on.”

Daniel Vasella, MD; former Chairman and CEO, Novartis AG—

A brilliant response to the "enduring questions of responsible leadership" in the market-driven world in which we live and work
By Robert Morris
Many years ago, one of Albert Einstein's colleagues at Princeton pointed out to him that he asked the same questions every year on his final examination. "Yes, that's quite true. Every year the answers are different." I thought about that response as I began to read Joseph Badaracco's latest book. In business as in the natural sciences, many of the questions asked haven't changed much (if at all). Badaracco poses five for leaders to consider:

1. "Am I really grappling with the fundamentals?"
2. "Do I know what I am really accountable for?"
3. "How do I make critical decisions?"
4. "Do we have the right core values?"
5. "Why have I chosen this life?"

He then identifies and examines what he characterizes as "emerging answers" to these questions, answers that are best revealed within his lively and eloquent narrative, in context. However, I am comfortable when discussing why I think this is his most valuable book...thus far. In my opinion, Badaracco is among the most thoughtful business thinkers, one who is eager, indeed passionate to understand a business world in which change really is the only constant and changes occur faster than ever before, and have wider and deeper impact than ever before. This is what Richard Dawkins has in mind when observing, "Yesterday's dangerous idea is today's orthodoxy and tomorrow's cliché."

I cannot recall a prior time in U.S. business history when such occurred faster and had greater impact than it does now. Organizations and their leaders face daunting challenges of unprecedented peril. This is what Badaracco has in mind when observing that "responsible leadership is, quite often, a version of a good struggle: it is a long effort, demanding perseverance and courage, to make good on serious but profoundly fallible commitments in an uncertain and often unforgiving world...Struggle has always been central to accomplishing anything worthwhile, and this is especially true today."

These are among the dozens of business subjects and issues of special interest and value to me, also listed to indicate the scope of Badaracco's coverage.

o Lessons from Entrepreneurs (Pages 4-6)
o The Enduring Questions (15-17)
o Emerging Answers (17-20)
o The Era of Big Machines (29-32)
o The New Fundamentals (32-45)
o Vertical Accountability: Boring and Brilliant (56-67)
o Market-Based Accountability and the Good Struggle (75-80)
o The Twentieth Century Template (87-91)
o The Challenge Today (91-95)
o Cathedrals and Architects (118-123)
o Consensus Values and Core Values (124-147)
o The Good Struggle (158-170)
o The Burden of Freedom (170-172)

I agree with Badaracco that responsible and accountable leadership is commitment, and, that commitment is struggle. Warren Bennis and Bob Thomas are among those who also have much of value to say about the "crucibles" that all leaders encounter but from which not all of them emerge stronger and wiser. For me, one of the most effective ways to demonstrate "the burden of leadership" is to examine a series of photographs of a U.S. president - Abraham Lincoln, for example - from when he assumed office until just before leaving it.

Joseph Badaracco's reference to the "burden of freedom" correctly suggests that it involves a commitment to, in his words, "grasping the fundamentals, defining their accountability, getting critical decisions right, making a few crucial values real and effective in an organization, and finding purpose, guidance, and solace for what is often a long, hard journey."

I congratulate him on his latest book, a brilliant achievement. Bravo!

Key questions that leaders have to address
By John Gibbs
Leaders do, of course, have moments of elation and stretches of smooth sailing, but in the exciting, turbulent, and dangerous world of the new invisible hand, these moments can be infrequent and fleeting, and they are typically hard won--through very demanding effort and real struggle--according to Joseph Badaracco in this book.

We live in an era of rapid change and uncertainty, in which extraordinary opportunities are balanced against great risks and intense performance pressure. This gives rise to difficult questions about the nature of responsible leadership, and the author examines the struggle faced by today's leaders through the filter of five key leadership questions:

* Am I really grappling with the fundamentals?
* What am I really accountable for?
* How do I make critical decisions?
* Do we have the right core values?
* Why have I chosen this life?

The book offers no prospect of gentler kinder days ahead. Instead, when leaders find themselves caught up in the trials of Sisyphus, the ancient king condemned by the gods to push a heavy rock to the top of a steep hill, only to see it roll back to the bottom, again and again for all eternity, they are encouraged to find joy in the daily struggle.

I normally prefer to read books which provide practical suggestions for addressing problems, rather than books which merely describe problems. This book falls into the latter category, but it describes the leader's struggle in an elegant and insightful way, so that any leader can benefit from reading the book and contemplating the key questions which it raises.

Excellent Reflection on Modern Leadership
By IN8
Leadership and its demands are different now (perhaps not as much as argued here but necessary to make the point). An increasingly complex adaptive economy-driven world, itself driven by explosive changes in knowledge sharing, challenges leaders to live better with uncertainty and unpredictability. This requires that leaders work with those challenges including holding to the values of clarity - meaningful projects - ethical bright lines. Further the imagined line between leadership and management is explored and found less than helpful. So it's a book about reality more than rhetoric, and that's refreshing. It's such a good read I'm giving it to all my managers and chairman!

Review
"In this newest volume, Randall weaves together the concepts of memory, borders, and boundaries throughout the narrative, like lines on a map, routing the topography of her life experiences. Randall ignores chronology in favor of intrigue, and the dense, moving collection seamlessly flows from poem to poem. [...] In Randall, readers find a reassuring voice—a strong, assertive narrator whose bravery resonates." —Jacquelyn Lazo, ForeWord Reviews

Ira Aldridge: The Vagabond Years, 1833-1852 (Rochester Studies in African History and the Diasp), by Bernth Lindfors

Ira Aldridge: The Vagabond Years, 1833-1852 deals in depth with the later experiences of one of the modern world's first black classical actors as he toured throughout the United Kingdom impressing audiences with his virtuosity and versatility as an interpreter not only of tragic and comic black roles but also eventually as an actor of classic white Shakespearean parts -- Shylock, Macbeth,Richard III, even Iago. Aldridge was very popular in Ireland and remained there for six years, performing in venues large and small. He traveled often in his own carriage with assistants who supported him in scenes, enabling famous plays to be staged anywhere, even in villages that did not have a proper theater. He also performed periodically in large cities with professional acting companies, and returned to the London stage in 1848, after leaving it fifteen years earlier. During these years he expanded his repertoire, refined his skills, and gained a reputation as one of Britain'smost talented thespians. In dealing with Aldridge's emergence as a professional actor in the United Kingdom, Lindfors here records in detail the ups and downs of his itinerant existence in a world where no theatergoer had ever seen anyone like him on stage before. Aldridge was genuinely a unique phenomenon in Britain at a pivotal point in history. Bernth Lindfors is Professor Emeritus of English and African Literatures, University of Texas at Austin, and editor of Ira Aldridge: The African Roscius (University of Rochester Press, 2007).

Forget a Mentor, Find a Sponsor: The New Way to Fast-Track Your Career, by Sylvia Ann Hewlett

Who’s pulling for you? Who’s got your back? Who’s putting your hat in the ring? Odds are this person is not a mentor but a sponsor. Mentors can build your self-esteem and provide a sounding board—but they’re not your ticket to the top.

If you’re interested in fast-tracking your career, what you need is a sponsor—a senior-level champion who believes in your potential and is willing to advocate for you as you pursue that next raise or promotion.

In this powerful yet practical book, economist and thought leader Sylvia Ann Hewlett—author of ten critically acclaimed books, including the groundbreaking Off-Ramps and On-Ramps—shows why sponsors are your proven link to success. Mixing solid data with vivid real-life narratives, Hewlett reveals the “two-way street” that makes sponsorship such a strong and mutually beneficial alliance. The seven-step map at the heart of this book allows you to chart your course toward your greatest goals.

Whether you’re looking to lead a company or drive a community campaign, Forget a Mentor, Find a Sponsor will help you forge the relationships that truly have the power to deliver you to your destination.

Smart, Hardworking, Loyal And Career-Stalled?
By Kare Anderson
Feeling a strong "blood tie" to his sponsor, an African American banking executive told Sylvia Ann Hewlett, the founding president of the Center for Talent Innovation, "A sponsor will smack you harder to shape up but will protect you as you move to the next level." "Sponsors, not mentors, put you on the path to power and influence by affecting three things: pay increases, high-profile assignments, and promotions," Hewlett points out in her groundbreaking new book, Find a Sponsor. "While more women than men have been mentored, 15 percent more men have won promotions according to research by Catalyst, cited in Hewlett's book. "70 percent of sponsored men and 68 percent of sponsored women feel they are progressing through their ranks" at a satisfactory rate "as compared to"57 percent of their unsponsored peers," discovered Hewlett.

The beneficial "sponsor effect" is even greater for women and for people of color. "Sponsorship has long been the inside track for Caucasian men," Hewlett points out. "Mentors give. Sponsors invest." Sponsors are effective champions for you, as I suggested in my Forbes column about her book. One of the biggest mistakes women make is in seeking a close relationship with an admired role model higher in the organization, often a woman who exudes an inclusive leadership style, according to Hewlett. Yet, such individuals often don't have what Hewlett calls "juice" - the clout to protect and advance them up to the top. From Hewlett's research, people at U.S. companies believe that most top executives are "the classic, command-and-control leader who values deference from his lieutenants about all," and that most are "competitive types - hard-edged, hard-driving guys who value quarterly bottom results." As Hewlett candidly admits, "They may not even be leaders you hugely admire."

Yet, I would add, you don't have to act unethically or lose your soul. Aligning with a powerful sponsor means you have more opportunity to use your best, often complementary talents, taking risks along the way, knowing that your alpha sponsor has your back because you leverage their success as they accelerate yours.

Sheryl Sandberg is a famous example. While she was oblique, in Lean In, about the extent of their help, she attracted several alpha male sponsors. One of them, Lawrence H. Summers took her under his wing as a research assistant at Harvard. When he was tapped to run the World Bank she came with him. In his next move to the U.S. Treasury, she became his chief of staff.

How and why mentors help prepare for opportunities but sponsors create privileged access to them; both are invaluable.
By Robert Morris
The title of this book is somewhat misleading because it could be interpreted to suggest that success in life is all about having one or more sponsors and that mentors and/or coaches have little (if any) value. That is clearly NOT what Sylvia Ann Hewlett had in mind when writing this book. On the contrary. So ignore the title and focus instead on how specifically a mutually beneficial relationship with an appropriate sponsor can help fast-track one's career. Moreover, for those who have not as yet read this book, it is important to understand that the information, insights, and counsel that Hewlett provides can be valuable to both men and women, and, to both those preparing for a career and to those only recently embarked on one. I think the material in this book can also be of incalculable value to those who now mentor protégés or will one day do so.

As I read this book, I was reminded of several others in which their authors discuss leader/follower relationships that must also be mutually beneficial. Great leaders and great followers have significant differences in terms of their respective obligations and responsibilities. The same is true of great mentors and great protégés. Hewlett carefully explains how differences between mentors and protégés nourish their symbiotic relationship while specifying the responsibilities and obligations of each. One point is so important I feel obliged to repeat it: as with healthy leader/follower relationships, healthy mentor/protégé relationships are MUTUALLY-BENEFICIAL.

Several passages caught my eye. Here is a cluster of mini-profiles of exemplary relationships:

o Unnamed sponsor and Brady Dougan, then at Bankers Trust (27-30)
o Jane Shaw and Rosalind Hudnell, Intel (Pages 43-46)
o Cathie Black and Joanna Coles, Cosmopolitan magazine (56-61)
o Cherie Booth QC, Cherie Blair Foundation for Women (65-69)
o John W. Rogers, Jr. and Mellody Hobson, Ariel Investments (110-111)
o Katherine Phillips, Columbia University Business School (160-163)
o Sallie Krawcheck, formerly Sanford C. Bernstein, Citigroup, and then BOA/Merrill Lynch (173-178)

However different these six mentors and their protégés may be in most respects, their relations were based on mutual respect and trust as well as pride and principle. Yes, egos are inevitably involved, as are career ambitions. However, the best mentor/protégé relationships are actually win-win-win, with the third "win" gained by the given enterprise.

These are among other subjects that Hewlett explores:

o "The Sponsor Imperative" (Pages 11-12)
o "Sponsor versus mentor," Figure 1-1 (Page 31)
o "What is a sponsor?" Table 2-1 (30)
o "What is a protégé?" Table 2-2 (39)
o "Road Map for Protégés" (49)
o "The Eight-Hundred Pound Gorilla" (139-141)
o "How to Make Yourself a Safe Bet" (144-149)
o "Distrust of Each Other as Risky Bets" (157-160)
o "What Is Executive Presence?" (170-172 and 178-179)
o "A Stricter Code for People of Color" (182-185)
o "Putting It All Together" (193-195)
o All of the Epilogue (197-212)

I also appreciate Hewlett's skillful use of a "Nail the Tactics" section (in Chapters 4-9) that helps her reader to apply whatever material is most appropriate to the given enterprise. These calls to action also encourage reader interaction with the material throughout the lively and rigorous as well as eloquent narrative.

No brief commentary such as mine can possibly do full justice to the quality and value of the material that Sylvia Ann Hewlett provides in this volume. However, I hope I have at least suggested the scope and depth of her coverage, encouraging those who read my review to allow her to help them fast-track their careers, meanwhile achieving personal growth and professional development.
