Amy met Tasha the next morning by the stream, where they washed up and brushed their teeth. The rain from the night before had made the bank muddy. Clad in her bathing suit, Tasha stepped gingerly into the stream and made a face.

"Is it cold?" Amy asked her.

"No. It's just that I keep expecting to step on something icky." Tasha sighed. "You know what I like about my bathtub at home? No fish."

Amy strode into the water with her bar of soap. "I think it feels neat to take a bath outside. It's like we're back in the Stone Age or something."

"I'll take civilization any day, thank you," Tasha replied.

"Oh, come on, Tasha, you're enjoying this just a little bit, aren't you?"

"It's okay, I guess," Tasha said. "What are we doing today?"

"Rafting, I think. Remember that picture in the brochure?"

"I remember," Tasha said, and her tone made it clear that it wasn't a particularly pleasant memory. "It looked scary."

"Exciting," Amy corrected her. "You'll love it."

"Only if you're in the same raft with me," Tasha said.

"I don't know how they'll divide us up," Amy replied.

"Amy, please be in the same raft with me," Tasha begged. "Make a fuss about it. Tell them I'll have a panic attack, or worse, a total and complete mental breakdown."

"A mental breakdown? Isn't that a little extreme?"

"Not necessarily," Tasha said. "Okay, maybe I won't have a breakdown. But if we're bouncing around on water, I'll definitely get motion sickness. Isn't that bad enough?"

Amy burst out laughing. "Oh, that's just great. You want us to be together so you can throw up all over me."

"Well, I'd rather throw up on you than a total stranger."

"Like Dallas?" Amy asked with a knowing wink.

Tasha turned bright pink. "Ohmigosh, what if  I  did throw up in front of him? I'd just die."

"Don't tell me you've fallen madly in love with Dallas," Amy said. "Isn't he a little old for you?"

"I can have fantasies, can't I?" Tasha retorted. "Don't you think he's sexy?"

"Not really," Amy replied honestly. Her recollection of his tone when he found her and Andy on the rock the night before had sent him way down in her esteem.

Tasha wasn't offended by her opinion. "I guess that's what happens when you have a real-life boyfriend. You stop thinking other guys are sexy."

Amy couldn't come up with an immediate response to that.

"Of course, I really wouldn't mind being in the same raft as Dallas," Tasha said. "If I fell into the river, he could jump in and rescue me." She shivered in imagined delight.

But it appeared that they wouldn't be going out on rafts that day. "It was a heavy rain last night," Flora told them all at breakfast. "The water's too high. It's over the acceptable level for rafting." She put up a hand to ward off the groans of the campers. "We'll do some real rock climbing instead," she told them. "And by the day after tomorrow, if it doesn't rain again, the water will be down to a level where we can take the rafts out."

"Wait a minute," Dallas said. "The water's only slightly over the level. I don't see why we can't go rafting today. It can't make that much of a difference. I've rafted on waters higher than this with no problem."

The briefest from crossed Flora's face, but she replied calmly. "Yes, I've rafted on high waters too, but this is the rule. The water's at two point five, and the highest allowable level for Wilderness Adventure programs is two point three."

"Oh, come on," Dallas remonstrated. "Two point three, two point five, that's nitpicking."

"Yeah," Eric said. "Why can't we bend the rules a little? I don't care if the water is two-tenths of a point higher than it's supposed to be. What about the rest of you?"

Andy and Brooke both made noises that indicated their willingness to go on the water. But Flora still shook her head.

"Sorry, guys," she began, but before she could say any more, Dallas took her arm. They walked away form the campfire to avoid being overheard. Of course, they didn't know they had a pair of super ears in their midst. Amy tuned in.

"This is stupid," Dallas was saying. "You're going to throw us completely off schedule. The hang-gliding equipment arrives on Tuesday, remember? Besides, if it rains tonight, the river will really be too high, and it won't go down enough before the week is over."

"But Dallas -- "

"Look, you may be the counselor with seniority, but I'm more experienced with white-water rafting than you are. Remember that vacation we took in Colorado? Remember how I handled the rapids? Are you going to tell me that you know more about rafting than I do?"

Amy couldn't see the counselors, but she suspected that Flora was torn between following regulations and not wanting to injure Dallas's macho pride. Amy understood. She glanced at Eric, and he looked at her. Then he looked away.

Caught up in her own thoughts, she didn't listen to the rest of Flora and Dallas's conversation. But apparently Flora had given in, because when they returned to the group she announced that they would be rafting after all.

When they reached the river, Amy had to admit that the water certainly didn't look dangerous. It was smooth as silk, clear and calm. Dallas set to work inflating the rafts while Flora distributed bright orange life jackets.

Eric objected. "Do we have to wear these things? Look at the water! You'd have to be weighted down with cement to drown in it!"

"Sorry," Flora said lightly. "Rules and regulations, you know. And the water can get rougher downstream."

Amy saw Eric exchange a look with Dallas. Personally, she was getting a little bothered by the counselor's influence on him. Somehow, she had to find an opportunity to talk with Eric privately.

Before they could get into the rafts, they were given instructions. Flora demonstrated what to do if they were flipped out of the raft. "You'll want to swim on your back, with your feet pointing downstream to fend off rocks. Dallas, would you show them the correct way to handles the paddles?"

Dallas held a paddle up for them to see. "This is the regular stroke," he said, demonstrating the movement. "When you have to get around an obstacle, you pull the oar through the water like this, against the current. Now, you don't want the paddle knocked out of your hands, because once it's floating in the water it won't be easy to retrieve, particularly when there's current. So you need to grip it firmly, with both hands, and --"

"Dallas," Flora interrupted. "There should be more space between each hand. That way you have more control."

A shadow crossed Dallas's face, but either Flora didn't notice or she chose not to. Quickly, she divided them into two groups, and Tasha was in luck. She had both Amy and Dallas in the raft with her. Eric was with them, too. Without discussing the subject, the boys took the front seats, while Tasha and Amy got in the back.  Amy was annoyed at the way the guys just assumed they would be in the lead, but she kept her feelings to herself. She didn't want any more problems with Eric, especially not in front of his new role model.

So she settled back, determined to enjoy herself. The sun was shining, the air was fresh, and she was here to have fun. This wasn't like the picture in the Wilderness Adventure brochure, though. The rafts weren't moving fast -- no one was paddling furiously. Amy felt like her raft was moving in slow motion.

The other raft floated along a few feet from them, and she smiled at Andy, who was sitting alongside Brooke behind Flora and Willard. Obviously, Andy didn't feel it was necessary to be in the front.

Brooke was beaming. She was clearly happy, and the smile she gave Amy was triumphant. Amy smiled right back at her. She wasn't going to let anybody ruin the day.

"I like this," Tasha declared.

Amy nodded. "It's nice. Not exactly exciting..."

"I know," Tasha said happily. "That's why I like it." She leaned over and stroked the water.

"Hold on to your paddle," Amy warned.

"I will," Tasha said dreamily. "It's not like we really need them."

"Not now, maybe," Amy said. "But if the water gets rougher, we'll need the paddles to steer the raft."

"Mmm," Tasha murmured. Her eyes were half-closed, and she looked very peaceful and contented. That was why Amy didn't mention what she thought she was hearing up ahead.

She could be wrong, of course. Her hearing was exceptional, but it wasn't always precise. That dim whooshing sound -- it could just be the wind. But after a few seconds she knew the wind wasn't making that noise.

She tapped Dallas on the back. "Dallas, are there rapids up ahead?"

Dallas was in the middle of telling Eric a story of how he'd gone on a white-water trip that nearly ended in disaster, and didn't seem to have heard her.

"Dallas," she said again, this time more urgently.

"What?" he asked.

She repeated her question about the rapids.

"I don't see anything," Dallas said. "Relax! Didn't anyone ever tell you? -- don't trouble trouble till trouble troubles you."

How could she say that she was hearing something no one else could hear? Tentatively she touched Eric's...

And the two shall meet...
By Alaria
Amy, Tasha and Eric have no idea what they've let themselves in for when they sign up for the week-long Wilderness Adventure course. Both Amy and Eric are thrilled at the opportunity to try all sorts of extreme sports such as rock-climbing, rafting and hand-gliding, but Tasha isn't so sure. The three are teamed up together in a group with two cousellors and three other kids: Brooke, beautiful, sporty and boy-mad; Willard, forced to take the course by his parents and totally unsuited to the activities, and Andy, who displays an incredible talent for sport that is almost equal to Amy's own.
Immediately things start to go wrong at the camp. Eric is angry with Amy for continually showing him up in the activities, Tasha struggles to conquer her fears and Amy is finding herself more and more attracted to Andy without knowing why. It isn't long before a freak accident takes place, convincing Amy that someone is out to get them and that the whole camp is in danger...
"And the two shall meet" is the sixth instalment in the Replica series and was even better than the last one I read (#5 Secret Clique). Full of action, this book is impossible to put down. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep your interest and the characters are easy to relate to. I definitely recommend this to all fans of the Replica series.

Pretty Good!
By Kate Fagerstrom
If and I mean if you have read the past five books read this one but if you havn't DO NOT read the summary or even get near this book. Okay, okay I admitt I am being a little forceful but the book gives a little more info about the history of Project Cresent then told. However the title gives it away. "And the Two Shall Meet" well if you look at the second page, the second cover page, there is a pic of a boy. His name is Andy, Amy, get it...anyway he was one of the first batch of clones done in the project of Project Cresent, cresent moon.
So Amy, Eric, and Tasha go to this Wilderness Adventure and the two conselers are weird. One gets killed supposedly by the other one, according to Andy, Andy kisses Amy, a big no no since Amy is going out with Eric, Tasha falls in love with the killer, big mystery(supposedly the organization has something to do with this mysterious junk), Andy and Amy run away, and well it just gets pretty confusing. That is why it gets four stars instead of five.
If you love the books read this if not well I don't care it is up to you. But it is good.

Very thrilling, but definitely not the best Replica book.

Amy Candler arrives at Wilderness Adventure. For one full week, she's going to be doing extreme ports. Whether is rock-climbing, mountain-biking, or hand gliding, it's all going to be a great time. Only Tasha and Eric know why things are so easy for her. But something is about to happen that isn't so easy. Mysterious freak accidents begin to happen to Amy, almost causing her to die. Then some scary things begin to happen to the other kids. This definitely is not a safe place. Will Amy be able to survive a place that once seemed so much fun?

This is the first special edition in the series. To be honest, I don't think it really is that special. Sure, there's much more pages than a normal Replica book, but it's quality, not quantity. However, I really did like the novel. We get to learn more about Amy's past, and Amy meets someone who may not be as nice as he seems. This is a book you should check out, and definitely a must-read for Replica fans.

Chapter 1

Change, Change, Change--a Basic Look at Our Bodies and Their Transitions

Laugh and the world laughs with you. Cry and you cry with your girlfriends.

--Laurie Kuslansky

Today, looking at my granddaughters as they enter puberty I understand from my own life experience that they can't know that the ease of their little girl lives is now going to start becoming complicated. Chemical changes and life itself become very difficult to understand. This is the life cycle. As we enter womanhood we grow breasts, our moods change, our bodies change, the known is now unknown, uncharted new territory.

Becoming a woman, especially before you are a woman, is a difficult passage at best. There is so much pressure. You may be the first one in your class to get your period, or the last one; both scenarios feel awful. You may be the one with the huge boobs, or the one whose breasts have not grown at all and the boys notice. Again, either way, other kids make fun of you, and you feel mortified.

I was the last in my class to grow breasts and the last to get my period. I was so embarrassed by this that I pretended I had my period when I really didn't just so I wasn't the one who was "out of the group." I made up stories about my "cramps" like the other girls. There was always some girl in the class who had cramps so bad, real or imagined, that she had to be sent home. I wished so much then that it could be me. (Imagine.)

One day, the other girls found out I was lying when my mother, who did not know how to tell a lie or be dishonest, told the mother of the most popular girl in the class that she didn't know why I was such a late bloomer.

The word was out and they all made fun of me. "How could you?" I wailed to my perplexed mother.

The year before this, the Catholic school I attended started running those scratchy black-and-white films showing sterile pictures of fallopian tubes and talking about "bleeding." Eeewww! I didn't want to know anything about it, at the time, which is pretty funny considering my work now. But I digress. So there I was, the only one in my class without her period and wishing/praying for it!

It all seems silly now, but so overwhelming when you are a fifteen-year-old.

Why did I even want the process to begin? I had the freedom of living without hormonal cycles, and the relatively steady physical and emotional balance of that freedom. Yet I did not know to appreciate it. No one told me about the long, drawn-out process I was about to enter; I did not know of the cycles of woman.

Then it finally came . . . a spot of blood. I was thrilled! "Guess what?" I blurted out to my mother. "I'm bleeding!" She seemed embarrassed, but later that evening without a mention she put a box of Kotex (trade name for humongous sanitary pads) in my room along with this awful-looking strap-thing-y to hold it on to my skinny little body. It felt like I was riding a horse, but I wore it proudly and complained about the discomfort to my girlfriends (for attention) while I prayed for cramps.

My mother was very Victorian, modest and shy, so she never really talked to me about it. In fact, the entire "sex talk" we had happened one day when I was standing on the kitchen stool putting away some dishes for her on a high shelf. She remarked that I had some hair under my arms (about four strands), and then she whispered, "Oh, do you have it down there also?"

Down there. That was it; the closest we ever got to talking about my changing body, my transition, my new life. A product of her time, my mother's shame of her own body became my shame, so I kept all things girly and personal to myself.

I entered womanhood having no idea of what it meant.

A Peek Under the Hood

The female body is miraculous and complex, capable of bringing new life into the world by way of our reproductive organs. But what exactly goes on "down there" and in there? It's important to understand how our bodies work: our exquisite female reproductive system consists of internal and external parts.

The external parts include the labia majora and the labia minora, also called lips, that surround the vagina and urethra and protect the internal organs from infectious organisms. The internal parts include the vagina, which claims both the functions of enabling sperm to enter the woman's body and being a birth canal. The uterus is the organ that carries a growing fetus, and the cervix is the lower part of the uterus that joins the uterus and the vagina. The ovaries, which rest to either side, produce eggs, and the fallopian tubes allow eggs to travel into the uterus.

Our bodies are magnificent. Each month we experience apoptosis, a fancy name for the necessary death of cells. We can understand this better by an explanation of our monthly period and what happens in the uterus. Each month we shed the lining of the endometrium (cell death) and it is cleared from our bodies through the process called menstruation. This monthly bleed is a necessary form of cell death to make way for new cells and to remove cells whose DNA has been damaged to the point at which cancerous change is liable to occur. It's a brilliant process, always clearing our bodies monthly to keep us healthy; it is only interrupted if we become pregnant, and in that case the endometrium lining holds the nourishment for the developing fetus.

If an egg released from the ovaries is fertilized by sperm, and pregnancy occurs, it will travel through the fallopian tube and implant itself in the uterus. During pregnancy, the egg, or embryo, grows into a fetus inside the uterus, which expands in size to accommodate the developing baby. A woman carries the baby in her uterus, or womb, until the baby is ready to be born.

When a woman's body expels all the eggs produced by the ovaries during the course of her lifetime, menopause begins and the ability to reproduce ends. Menopause should really be called "egglessness." It's a friendlier term. Before we get to eggless, however, our hormones begin to decline subtly, in what we call perimenopause. Meaning you can still reproduce but it will become more difficult to conceive, difficult to carry to full term, and the eggs left are often not as strong and healthy. Sometimes, but not always, this leaves babies born to moms at risk for birth defects and health conditions.

As fully reproductive women we make enough estrogen each month so that it reaches its peak on the twelfth day, stops the growth of cells, and makes progesterone receptors. Without an estrogen peak, your brain can't send the signal to release any of the eggs you have left. With no estrogen peak there's no feedback information to shut off follicle-stimulating hormone, so FSH pours constantly, overstimulating your ovaries and ripening all at once most of the eggs you have left. The loss of this rhythm in perimenopause actually triggers the destruction of the rest of your eggs through the action of excessive FSH, using up the remainder of your eggs. At about this time, you begin to feel the heat of hot flashes. That's how the system effectively shuts itself down for good. This process can take a decade--a long uncomfortable decade!

This is all background to explain why the healthiest woman is a reproductive woman, and once hormones begin to decline, new science has proved that replacing the missing hormones restores a woman to her healthiest prime even though she is no longer capable of making a baby.

What I did know was that now I felt different. I was getting used to the ups and downs of the surges of sex hormones and menstrual cycles, as well as the (very welcome) growth of pubic hair, breasts, and sex feelings. Now I felt that I was like all the other girls.

But then my breasts kept growing. (Wow, be careful what you wish for!) I started out at fifteen wearing a scant 32A cup (padded), hardly filling it, and by the summer of my sixteenth year I was an overflowing 34C that could hardly be contained. My breasts grew so big and so fast on my skinny little body that they were a little embarrassing, but I liked the attention I was getting from having them, including attention from my lecherous drama teacher who would say highly inappropriate things to me when no one was around. I got the part of Adelaide in Guys and Dolls partly due to my talent, partly due to my shapely, curvy body, and partly because that lecherous one wanted me around. My father didn't like the new me at all. My body seemed to make him angry, and he would say things like, "For chrissakes, put some clothes on."

BYE-BYE PUBERTY

Transitioning into womanhood, like all transitions, is an agitating and confusing experience. It's a long, bumpy, uncomfortable road; but then you adjust to the excitement, privileges, and challenges of being an adult. This is also a time when your hormones reach their maximum. By the time you are in your twenties and thirties, you enter a period of remarkable high energy, clear thinking, and all the drama of being an adult and building your adult life. You don't quite know who you are yet in most cases, but you sure are having fun. Your body is the best looking it will ever be; your breasts are high and perky, and your sex drive is off the charts. You are oozing estrogen. For most people this is a time of perfect hormonal balance. Diet affects your hormones at this time like any time, but your youth withstands the assault of binge drinking, hangovers, fast food, quarts of ice cream, and sugary desserts. Somehow you sleep it off, bang down giant cups of coffee, and sail through work until the end of the next week, when you do it to yourself all over again.

HELLO, MIDLIFE . . .

Sometime between your midthirties and midforties another series of physical changes begins to takes place. Transitions! In general, this is a time of strength and vibrancy, but now you are more affected by outside factors and lifestyle choices. And as I just said, things are shifting again. Your periods may become a little erratic, your breasts may get painfully lumpy, and sometimes your periods get lighter or heavier than usual, or you are bleeding between them. You or your friends may be struggling with: infertility, difficulty conceiving or carrying a pregnancy to term, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, sudden weight gain, foggy thinking, memory loss, migraine headaches, cold hands and/or feet, and premenstrual syndrome, even when you've never had it before.

You are a little moodier than you used to be and you tire more easily. The kids can get on your nerves in ways they never had before. By the end of the day you can't wait for that 5:00 cocktail to cool out and relax. You don't recover from a long trip or a night out as easily, either, and staying home becomes more alluring than constantly running to the next event. You need more sleep, but the sleep you are getting isn't as sound as it once was. Your muscles strain more easily when you are working out, and when you get out of bed in the morning, you might grunt a little from the stiffness. The fast food you enjoyed in your twenties now gives you heartburn, and drink one too many glasses of wine and you will have a whopper of a headache.

But the big one . . . you don't feel like having sex the way you used to. Is it you? Is it him? You don't know, but it's depressing and it takes its toll around the house.

Your husband is working as hard as he can to give you the lifestyle you both want. You likely are working two jobs: in your career and at home. You feel "put upon" because he is always gone and you have to do everything. He doesn't seem to realize all you do and that you are working from morning till late at night being the perfect mom, wife, housekeeper, career woman, and preparing for everyone for the next day while he's already asleep under the covers with the TV blaring. You can't help it when you get annoyed that he didn't stay up for you, even though he has an early morning appointment. Could this be PMS? No, you say to yourself. This is real. It's him. You start to have dark thoughts about breaking out, getting away. But these are just fantasies . . . aren't they? Your PMS used to be mild, but now it can carry with it a surge of fury. Plus, you've gained a little weight and you can't seem to exercise enough to get it off. That too is annoying. You ask him if what you're wearing makes you look fat, and if he says yes, it's an evening wrecker.

What is happening? You are now at midtransition. Fun, huh?

HORMONE HELL

Just like with puberty, now your hormones seem to be all over the place again. Just when you had gotten used to feeling great all the time, it's like something has stripped it away. Your hormones are fluctuating up and down, like they have a mind of their own, but the overall direction of them is down, just as your reproductive years are winding down.

In puberty your hormones fluctuate, which is why you cry, yell at your mother, get depressed and feel suicidal if your boyfriend breaks up with you. Plus you hate your body and you feel fat, and your parents are mean and no one understands you.

Then you transition through that passage into your reproductive years and suddenly your cycles are regular. You feel happy and serene, and proud of your abilities to reproduce. And aren't you something that you have given birth to these incredible children? They are perfect and so is your life. Your husband brings you flowers, and you have great standing-up sex in the shower with the door locked, while the kids are still safely sleeping in their rooms. Life is good. Life is smooth sailing and delicious.

Then along comes perimenopause and the fluctuations start again, almost like you are back in puberty. You cry for no reason, no one understands you, you are overworked and underappreciated, your body is betraying you, and did I mention, no one in the house understands you?

An Important Read for Women
By Linda Vargas
This book should be a door prize for showing up at your annual physical when you're 39!

This is a concisely written, information-dense guide to identifying and managing the myriad symptoms of perimenopause. The text is written with utmost finesse! You learn what you want and need to know quickly. clearly, and with efficient scope of information to get you to hit the ground running towards proactively addressing what's going on with you. Yes, the punch line is basically to use bioidentical hormones. Even if a reader doesn't want to shoulder the expense of clinical encounter, there are recommendations for supplements, what to eat, and avoiding environmental toxins worth reading. There's no bloated hyperbole taking up the first many pages-You get right down to business, so the text reads at a brisk pace. I LOVE that the testimonials were put at the end of the text. I was already satisfied with information for myself, so I had the patience to actually read them. Of course, the usual characters of her storytelling make their appearance in the book, too: her husband, Alan, and daughter-in-law, Caroline. You know them, don't you? All of her books feature her family members! It's charming and inclusive towards you, the reader. It cracks me up to read about how they're doing these days;)

She makes generous mention of the Life Extension Foundation. For full disclosure, I used to work there. They. Are. GOOD! The folks that work there are sharp and helpful. I still stop in for their events. Yes, Bill Faloon is a real person. He is almost indescribably brilliant. To see what I mean, read his column which opens every edition of LEF's magazine.

A very helpful guide to understanding those seemingly little things that bug you if you're a woman of a certain age. At a bare minimum, read the Symptom Solver section towards the back of the book. Highly recommended.

it seemed great that Suzanne Somers was setting up an organization (Foreverhealth
By Daina R. Middleton
I found the book to be helpful and interesting as someone experiencing many of the symptoms outlined in the book. At first blush, it seemed great that Suzanne Somers was setting up an organization (Foreverhealth.com) which helps match patients to doctors and a link to discounted blood work. I went to the site recommended in the book and signed up and searched for a doctor in my geography. Because I travel for work, I looked in three geographies for doctors. I then did google searches to look for reviews and feedback for each of the doctors listed. After about an hour of searching in all three geographies, I could not find a single doctor referenced that had a good review, and I would say a number of them frightening reviews, not to mention a number had "iffy" credentials. Clearly, there is no screening process for the matching process and I am now skeptical of the entire organization.

Read this book in 2 days!
By Heather
While I read this book, I felt like Suzanne was referring to me and my symptoms. I can't wait to run some blood tests and contact a doctor. I'm extremely excited that there is hope out there. And, it's nice to know I'm not the only woman going through this.

Introduction by Sophia Dembling

When I told people about the book I was working on, their first question was usually, “What are your criteria for must-see places?” Or, less eloquently,

“Sez who?”

A fair enough question, to which the answer is: “Sez me.”

I did poll friends and colleagues as well, and got some good ideas there, but what we have here is an entirely subjective collection of American places I think are important or cool or important or quintessentially American.
And who am I to say so? A connoisseur of travel in our glorious 50.

My first view of America was through the windows of a baby blue Plymouth Duster on a cross-country road trip with two girlfriends. I was 19 years old and had barely ever left New York City—which, like Los Angeles, both defines America and barely resembles it. I was astonished and awed as much by cornfields as the Rocky Mountains. The solid farmers and stolid farm wives we saw in diners and truck stops were as exotic as unicorns to me. Chicago intrigued me and LA seduced me, and by the time we were driving up the Pacific Coast Highway, with the whole of the nation stretching out to our right, I was madly in love.

I continued the romance on the Greyhound bus, traveling for weeks at a time, crisscrossing the country, staying in cheap motels, with friends, with friends of friends, and once on a gymnasium floor because I stumped into Deadwood, South Dakota the weekend of the enormous Sturgis motorcycle rally. But I was determined to see Mount Rushmore (which I did—and have returned since).

I’ve been travel writing since the mid-1980s, and my first published travel article, in The Dallas Morning News, was about taking a tour of the stars’ homes in Nashville. For a while, my friend Jenna Schnuer and I wrote a website called Flyover America, in which we shared our passion for America’s out-of-the-way places.

I love the scale of America. I love her grand places, brash cities, and unabashed kitsch. Her breadth and depth and roadside attractions. I scorn world-traveling Americans who have never explored their own backyards—who have never seen a thunderstorm over Nebraska or the Atlantic pounding the coast of Maine. Who have never eaten grits in the South or salmon in Alaska. Who have never seen the Western art at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Wyoming or the mermaid show at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park in Florida. I’m so passionate for travel in America, I even argue that Las Vegas is a must-see, no matter how highbrow you consider yourself.

America is overwhelming in its size and variety. If you have never traveled it, where do you start? Short-hop weekends are always good for exploring cities and towns. A long weekend in New York City or Savannah can be a nice aperitif. But for serious travel in America, nothing beats the road trip—it is the only way to start understanding the nation’s culture and appreciating its geography.

Next time you have vacation time coming, invest it in a long-distance cross-country drive, in any direction. East-west, north-south. It doesn’t matter, there’s stuff to see every which way and I guarantee that you will never see America the same way again.

Naturally, there’s no place or experience in this book that men wouldn’t enjoy as well too. Any American, male or female, who doesn’t make a point of seeing the Grand Canyon is a knucklehead, in my humble opinion. (People from other nations get a pass, but I know they’re out seeing stuff like that anyway because I run into them all the time.)

What I tried to do with this highly subjective list, with the help of other women, is highlight places and activities that enlighten us about American women and their history, allow us to indulge our girly and tomboy sides, hold particular spiritual significance, or otherwise have something to offer women or our understanding of America and the women in it.

You will surely have your own ideas to add to this list, and I say have at it. America is so vast, so diverse, so fascinating, so beautiful—100 places is not nearly enough. But it’s a start.

LOVE.
By Jessica Voigts
This book is extraordinary, and while it DOES focus on travel (maybe this is why I love it so much?), it is a Mary Poppins bag of interesting things, waiting to be unpacked. It is, at once, a travel guide, a talk with a very funny best friend, a history class with your favorite professor, and inspiration to read, learn, and explore more.

A Guide for Women --- and for Men, Too
By G. Mark Mcdonald
With every piece of journalism she pursues and with every book she writes, Sophia Dembling rocks it. Serious planning, inventive sourcing, deep reporting, thorough research, careful writing --- it's all in here. This is a book about women's places, yes, but it can also serve as a guide, a map and a compass for men. And really, it's a kind of instruction manual for *anyone* interested in American history. Fascinating stuff.

Love, love, love this book!
This cross-country journey was a fun, fresh take on places I have already been and inspiration for future travel. My sightseeing bucket list now includes the live mermaid show at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, Florida!

Review
Recommended for any martial arts library. -- Journal of Asian Martial Arts You Are How You Move - Experimental Chi Kung. Practicing craniosocial therapist and chi kung teacher Ged Sumner beleives chi kung is the best kept secret on the planet. In You Are How You Move, Sumner says that exercise has long been considered as a stressful activity - in fact, he says in modern society there's an overwhelming tendency for everything to be stressful. That's where chi kung comes in. There's an alternative way to exercise that involves being gentle with yourself and enjoyable, while being no less powerful. You Are How You Move shows the reader, using photographs throughout the book, how to tap into their body, find the body's centre and spine, and listen to the message it gives them. Using this traditional and ancient form of Chinese movement, Sumner says we can become fit and healthy - vital, even - through opening and mobilising our body and joints. -- Australian Natural Health As a practising craniosacral therapist and tutor Ged understands how important the simple things can be. It is a practical book that needs to be used and not just read. It includes clear and intuitive insights for getting the most out of your qigong exercises...This is an excellent book not only to serve as an introduction to qigong but also to help us gain clarity and reconnect with the basics. -- Tai Chi Finder With Sumner's guide as a source book, you are introduced to many useful techniques of self-awareness and self-cultivation. Some of the material is uniquely his; the remainder is useful in the way he draws it together into a single body of work. -- Journal of Asian Martial Arts

Liked the progressive program, but some reservations about the instructions
By Dandylioness
My first caveat: I am new to Chi Kung, so my review is from the perspective of a beginner.

In You Are How You Move, Sumner lays out a progressive program of exercises. I appreciated how he begins with very basic exercises based on posture, breathing, and loosening the joints. In fact, Sumner takes up over half of the book with these simple, focused, but extremely useful exercises. He encourages the practitioner to apply these techniques in everyday activities to lessen wear and tear on the body. I have been struggling to improve my own posture and gait, and I found this section immensely helpful in finding more comfortable and relaxed ways of moving and standing. He then moves on to describe Chi Kung forms for circulating Chi, balancing Fire and Water elements, and moving Chi along specific channels in the body. He wraps up with a section of mediations (visualization exercises, some incorporating movement), and a section suggesting practices for specific ailments (arthritis, fatigue, impotence, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, headaches, and asthma).

Bits and pieces of the philosophy behind the practice are scattered throughout the book. The metaphysical theories are presented matter-of-factly, and Sumner's makes no attempt to convince or please the skeptic. I personally would have appreciated a more sustained philosophical discussion up front. The actual introduction is mostly a rant about the evils of Western exercise, which I found rather off-putting. I would have been drawn in a little easier if he had told me a little more about why I should do Chi Kung, rather than why he thinks I shouldn't jog. On the other hand, Sumner's approach would be preferable to someone who is less interested in theory and wants to jump right into the practice.

My only real complaint, and the reason for the ambivalent rating, is that some of the instructions seemed a bit confusing or unfinished to me as a beginner. Even with the inclusion of photographs, I sometimes had trouble picturing how certain forms should look in motion. This was even worse in a few instances where Sumner essentially allows the photos to substitute for written instructions. This was not troublesome throughout the book, and many of the exercises were adequately explained.

Overall, I cautiously recommend this book, but only as a supplement to other forms of instruction.

I'm going to start adding Chi Kung elements to my yoga workout!
By Ulalume Viva Jones
I do Kundalini yoga for exercise about 30 minutes per day. I chose it because it was a low stress yet high output workout. I don't like gyms because of their corporate look and subliminal competition. I wanted to relax while I worked out, not get frustrated or stretch my muscles to their limit.

Chi Kung has a lot of the same mindset Kundalini yoga has. I have never heard of it before this book, but I guess it is trendy to do it, like Tai Chi. The poses remind me a lot of Tai Chi. Chi Kung is a way of seeing exercise as every movement, how to walk in the right way, how to stand and observe the body. I was hooked when I did the exercises about finding my spine. The book is written in simple, easy to follow language. I enjoyed that the book had elemental poses...it starts with Earth and grounding, then moves to Fire and Water with poses like the ever famous Crane pose via Karate Kid. I like the animal poses very much. All the poses are to release energy, much like Kundalini does and to help areas of the body that are unhealthy and need work.

The photos are helpful but I wish there were more of them. I had a slightly hard time trying to figure out how flowing I was supposed to be with hand and arm movements, so I hope I am doing them right. I tend to find only start and stop photos. I think I will be able to figure them out as I go on. I am hoping to do a half Kundalini/half Chi Kung workout, since I like the ideas of it so much.

For those who like this book, I recommend Kundalini yoga as well, especially Kundalini Yoga For Beginners and Beyond by Ravi Singh and Ana Brett. I think the two practices go together very well in releasing untapped energy from the body as well as being good exercise.

I do wish the book had an index of poses and also a list of aliments like for example, asthma or anxiety would have pages right there for me to look up. The last chapter does explain these well, but a quick reference list would have been nice.

A short introduction but not a complete course of Chi Kung
By Jojoleb
In his book, "You Are How You Move: Experiential Chi Kung," Ged Sumner attempts to redefine our concept of exercise. Chi Kung, which Sumner translates as "energy work," is an ancient Chinese form of movement exercise that promotes the flow of Chi, or vital energy, throughout the body. Sumner, a seasoned Chi Kung teacher and craniosacral therapist, tries to introduce Chi Kung philosophy, theory, mediation, and movement in a quick 176 pages. There is a lot here to ponder and practice and the information is solid, but unfortunately the volume is too slim to stand on its own. What we end up with is a book that would be a good adjunct to a course in Chi Kung, but can't quite cover all the bases. It's a good introduction to Chi Kung, but hardly a solid base.

That is not to say that I didn't enjoy reading the book. I agree wholeheartedly with Sumner's criticism that we think about exercise in the wrong way. Most of us do conceptualize exercise as 'going to the gym' and have use the image of the professional athlete or Olympian as our ideal of fitness and strength. He quite correctly points out that 'over adrenalized' bodies that are consumed with exhaustion and strain are not necessarily the epitome of fitness. Most sports heros and Olympic athletes have limited career spans, push themselves excessively, often work through injury, and can really wear down their bodies by the time they reach their peak. His answer is that we have to redefine exercise as a lifelong pursuit that works in harmony with our bodies and promotes longevity and overall health. For Sumner, the answer is Chi Kung.

In the first 5 chapters (1. What is Exercise? 2. Finding Your Spine. 3. Listening to Your Body. 4. Natural Alignment. 5. Breathe More) he defines his goals and tries to promote awareness of one's body and awareness of the flow of Chi ('vital energy'). The next five chapters (6. A New Pelvis. 7. Know Your Feet. 8. Moving in 3D. 9. The Art of Standing Still. 10. Opening Your Joints) to expand on one's body awareness and work on specific problem areas. The final chapters (11. Chi Flow. 12. Fire and Water. 13. Transformations. 14. Be Spontaneous. 15. Chi Meditations. 16. Chi Kung Applications) are meant to focus ones awareness of Chi and introduce the reader on how to focus Chi to improve meditation and even cure disease.

In spite of the introduction, few Chi Kung terms are defined. As someone who has never learned about Chi Kung before, I would have benefited from a glossary containing basic terms. He has some figures of Chi Kung meridians, but there also could have been an appendix that illustrated these. Wikipedia may not be a perfect or authoritative resource, but I found myself surfing the web in search of some of this new information. From a quick canvassing of the subject, the book is a reasonable launching point but is really only the tip of the iceberg.

Needless to say this is a lot of ground to cover. Written descriptions of the exercises are mostly clear, but the pictures in the book are often lacking. This may reflect the fact that I received a reviewer's copy, but pictures in my edition weren't captioned. In general, the text describing a movement was on the same page as the appropriate pictures but still it would have been beneficial to have captions to better clarify and help the reader sort things out. For many of the exercises it would have been helpful to have more pictures in a series to better define a movement. Moreover, most of the pictures were frontal views. Given that movements occur in three dimensions, some of the exercises would have benefited from additional photographs from a different angle. The models in the book and the videos (they are the same in each format) are generally dressed in comfortable and loose clothing. This is probably supposed to set a good example for how the reader should dress when doing these exercises but in a few cases obscures a perfect view of the movements.

Sumner does have a website that has Quicktime videos of the movements: [...]. Unfortunately, the web address is buried in the middle of chapter 15. It is referred to in the blurb on the back cover, but the address is not printed there. The Quicktime videos do illustrate the movements better than the printed photographs do. In fact, they illustrate them so much better that a DVD may have worked better in this case than printed media.

Also missing is an exercise plan. There are a number of discrete exercises and chapters, but it isn't clear to me how you would put this together in a daily regimen or overall exercise program.

I have only been performing these exercises for a short period of time, but the book has given me a greater appreciation for Chi Kung. I don't know if I am completely sold on the concept that there is a vital energy that ebbs, flows, and needs to be channeled correctly through one's body. Even so, using this imagery is at very least relaxing and leads to a better sense of self and bodily awareness. I don't know if I could ever use this as my sole form of exercise: I am not interested in peak athletic performance or massive biceps, but I do exercise in part to increase muscle mass such that gravity is less of an issue and to keep my weight in check. Nevertheless, the movements are relaxing and meditative enough that they deserve further exploration. However, to get real benefit from Chi Kung, I believe I will have to find an instructor in that actually lives in this neck of the woods and take a course.

My Brother's Name: A Novel, by Laura Krughoff

Jane Fields has idolized her older brother, John, since they were children. She follows in his footsteps as a drummer, and when he suffers a psychotic break as a young man, she follows him into the bewildering landscape of mental illness.

Surrendering to John’s schizophrenic and elliptical logic, Jane assumes her older brother’s identity, and begins to make a life for herself as a young man named John. Every day, Jane interacts with the world as John, and then comes home to tell her brother the stories of his own life, under the naïve and perhaps mad hope that these stories will help John remember and return to the self he lost. But in the act of being John, Jane runs the risk of becoming him. Jane soon identifies more strongly with the man she’s become than the overshadowed woman she once was. When John begins to demand that Jane give up certain aspects of the life she’s built under her assumed identity, particularly a romance, Jane’s double life becomes a house of cards that threatens to collapse. Jane and John are forced to confront the limits of their ability to control each other, and the world around them, through the stories they tell—but just how deep into mental illness can Jane slide?

From Booklist
Identity is a slippery slope in this GLBT novel written as a young woman’s memoir-like tale of assuming her look-alike, schizophrenic brother’s identity. Jane goes far beyond an exterior resemblance as she mirrors John, reaching into deeper, more mysterious realms. “In my very first moments of being my brother, I was already getting us mixed up.” Even the book design, with its reversed-type running header, emphasizes mirroring. Their shared passion for drums lands “Johnny” work, and Jane soon experiences this complex sensation: “my body felt more like John’s than mine . . . how the things done to it might reward or punish my brother instead of me.” This becomes problematic when dental technician April comes on to Johnny, and, although Jane’s excited and attracted, she must lie to avoid having sex. Inevitably, romantic entanglement and pain result in Krughoff’s fast-paced read that’s as daring and provocative as it is entertaining. --Whitney Scott

Review
"Intriguing premise and deeply involved relationships between characters opens a new perspective on self and gender identity. ...Krughoff creates a fascinating portrait of a family coping with mental illness and explores the outer limits of sisterly love. ...by deeply involving the reader in Jane and John's lives, [Krughoff] provides much food for thought. Jane's transformation into John--evocatively illustrated in stunning cover art by Anders Hanson--is so complete that readers will be torn between wanting her to reveal her true identity and hoping she gets away with the ruse somehow." -- ForeWord Reviews

"A gutsy, poignant, bold and nuanced debut, Laura Krughoff's big talent tackles mental illness, gender identity, and the intricacies of the American middle-class family." -- Cris Mazza, author of Various Men Who Knew us as Girls

"Krughoff's debut novel is a disturbing, subversive, and strangely fun psychological thriller. While My Brother's Name has shades of Jeffrey Eugenides on gender identity, Siri Hustvedt on psychosis, even Jennifer Egan on the lengths to which siblings will go to identify with and claim one another, its alchemy of combustible ingredients adds up to something wholly original and compellingly its own." -- Gina Frangello, author of Slut Lullabies and My Sister's Continent

Dazzling.
By Heather Momyer
My Brother's Name will dazzle you and make you feel pulpy inside (but in a heart-breaking way more than a heart-uplifting way). The story is about Jane and her brother John and together they become Johnny-Jane-John as Jane takes her brother's identity, living as as John as part of their co-prescribed therapy to help John live with schizophrenia. It's a hopeless situation, as hopeless as her love. As Jane becomes Johnny, her earlier, only partially-formed identity gets lost in the make-believe world of pretending to be someone else until she really does become someone else. The story questions the notion of authentic identity and offers the consciously-created identity as a type of real self.
