No One Had a Tongue to Speak: The Untold Story of One of History's Deadliest Floods, by Utpal Sandesara, Tom Wooten

On August 11, 1979, after a week of extraordinary monsoon rains in the Indian state of Gujarat, the two mile-long Machhu Dam-II disintegrated. The waters released from the dam’s massive reservoir rushed through the heavily populated downstream area, devastating the industrial city of Morbi and its surrounding agricultural villages. As the torrent’s thirty-foot-tall leading edge cut its way through the Machhu River valley, massive bridges gave way, factories crumbled, and thousands of houses collapsed. While no firm figure has ever been set on the disaster’s final death count, estimates in the flood’s wake ran as high as 25,000. Despite the enormous scale of the devastation, few people today have ever heard of this terrible event.

This book tells, for the first time, the suspenseful and multifaceted story of the Machhu dam disaster. Based on over 130 interviews and extensive archival research, the authors recount the disaster and its aftermath in vivid firsthand detail. The book presents important findings culled from formerly classified government documents that reveal the long-hidden failures that culminated in one of the deadliest floods in history.

The authors follow characters whose lives were interrupted and forever altered by the flood; provide vivid first-hand descriptions of the disaster and its aftermath; and shed light on the never-completed judicial investigation into the dam’s collapse.

Review
"What is it about dams that inspire fatal dreams of grandeur? Utpal Sandesara and Tom Wooten have done a great service by vividly reconstructing one of the greatest and least known dam disasters in history—although it is anything but unknown, of course, to the largely voiceless people who were its major victims. This is an absorbing story not just about bureaucratic ambition and folly, but about power and powerlessness." --Adam Hochschild, author of To End All Wars, King Leopold's Ghost, and other books.

"Written with a sympathy as deep as its research, this is the story of a deadly environmental disaster that sprang from hubris and miscalculation. Like any sudden disaster, the floods that destroyed Morbi burst upon the everyday lives of people unaware of what was about to befall them. Sandesara and Wooten skillfully capture both the commonplace and the extraordinary, and in doing so reveal what sometimes seems to be the near universal failures that lay behind so many environmental disasters and the quite specific particulars of Indian history and development." -- Richard White, professor of American History at Stanford University

"The anatomy of a perfect storm: not just a South Asian monsoon-driven tragedy killing thousands, but an overall portrait of social, political, historical, and moral corruption and dysfunction. Inspections are missed, planning is chaotic, and disempowered find themselves squarely in the path of an epic disaster." --Clark Blaise, co-author (with Bharati Mukherjee) of Days and Nights in Calcutta and The Sorrow and the Terror: The Haunting Legacy of Air-India 182.

"This memorable account of an epic flood is all the more impressive because its authors, one of them the son of a survivor, are so young. Their reporting is painstaking, their stories heartbreaking." --Anne Fadiman, author of The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down

"It is one thing for 25,000 people to perish all at once; it is another to completely forget about them. Utpal Sandesara and Tom Wooten's fascinating story about an Indian dam disaster should be required reading for anyone interested in modern India, the environment, or narrative nonfiction. 'No one had a tongue to speak'—until these two young writers came along to listen. One of the most important books about India in recent years." --Suketu Mehta, Pulitzer Prize finalist and author of Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found

"Sandesara and Wooten paint a vivid peoples' portrait of the human impact of a top-down development project gone wrong. Though the Machhu Dam disaster occurred nearly thirty years ago, the themes explored in No One Had a Tongue to Speak are as relevant today as they have ever been. With developing nations racing to catch up, the world simply must get better at contending with the humanitarian and environmental consequences of rapid growth. As such, this is a book for our time." --William Clark, Harvey Brooks Professor of International Science, Public Policy and Human Development at Harvard University, and a 1983 MacArthur Fellow

"Sandesara and Wooten provide a fresh, engaging account of a horrendous, man-made flood in Gujarat, India. The tale of the Machhu dam disaster highlights the pitfalls of a top-down approach to development, risk mitigation, and long-term recovery, using the words of those who have experienced it. As a globally surgent India marches ahead with its economic growth and comes to terms with its prospects and limitations in the realm of development, these two researchers offer a refreshing, comprehensive, painstaking, and lively account of a defining moment in India's past. From policymakers to common citizens, readers will relish this book's narration and ponder its implications for future disasters." --Mihir Bhatt, founder of the All India Disaster Mitigation Institute

"The break of the Machhu Dam-II, which killed thousands of people on India's Saurashtra peninsula in 1979, must rank as one of the world's great engineering disasters. In their book, No One Had a Tongue to Speak, Utpal Sandesara and Tom Wooten recall in painstaking detail the secrecy and arrogance that led to the disaster. They also recount the tragedy that struck unsuspecting farmers and townspeople one fateful monsoon afternoon, the courage with which survivors rebuilt their lives and homes, the generous support that many officials and citizens lent to their task, and the shameful deceit by which a government bureaucracy refused to be held to account. All who read this important book will gain great respect for the good people from northern Saurashtra. Readers will understand that the dam disaster can repeat itself as long as the lessons from a flawed planning process have not been learned." --Peter Bosshard, Policy Director of International Rivers

"The book addresses with rigor and compassion the devastating effect of floods in the Machhu River Valley in Gujarat, India, in 1979 caused by the unintended consequences of a development project. The two researchers have documented its impact and the inadequate response on a forgotten community. The book's social significance and important findings will appeal to all those interested in issues of development in India and elsewhere." --Jerome Sauvage, former deputy director of the United Nations Development Program in India

"Wherever you put your foot in the mud you strike a body"
By ealovitt
The two Harvard student-authors, Utpal Sandesara & Tom Wooten develop their account of the devastating 1979 dam collapse in Gujarat within the context of the social history of 20th century India. This book is part travelogue and part biography as well as the story of a terrible tragedy. I couldn't help comparing it to accounts of New Orleans before, during, and after Hurricane Katrina. Politics are firmly embedded in the latter part of both tragedies in an ugly, but predictable manner.

The collapse of Machhu Dam-II looms over the narrative like the Erinyes over the hero in a Greek tragedy. It was an accident waiting to happen, rather like the collapse of the New Orleans levees during Hurricane Katrina. On an exceptionally rainy August 11, 1979, the impounded water finally overtops its earthen embankments as the 2 million+ people living below it are performing their monsoon routines and preparing for the Hindu Shravan holidays.

The dam itself was only seven years old, but the calculations for the maximum amount of water that it needed to hold were fatally flawed. The monsoon rains that precipitated the collapse dumped 28 inches of rain on the region in less than 24 hours. The two-mile-long earthen embankments that flanked either side of the concrete spillway were never meant to be overtopped. When they were, the banks quickly eroded away and the cities and villages downstream were inundated by twelve to thirty feet of raging floodwater, including Morbi (aka Morvi), which was also known as 'the Paris of India.'

The authors interviewed many citizens of Morbi and its surrounding villages, including the mayor, a principal, and a convict who was serving time for murder, all of them victims of the flood. The reader is given a solid introduction to what life for these protagonists was like before, during, and after the disaster. One of my favorite characters, other than the convict Gangaram Tapu who saved many people during the flood, is Pratapbhai Adroja, the owner of a small tobacco shop called 'Ghost Paan.' The Indian Government did finally get around to helping Morbi rebuild, but Pratapbhai's fellow-citizens pitched in and helped his Ghost Paan reopen less than a week after the floodwater almost destroyed their city.

I think Americans could learn a few lessons from the citizens of Morbi on how to get a city back up and running, with only minimal help from Big Government.

Be sure to read the thoughtful forward on 'Disasters Natural and Unnatural' by Paul Farmer, the Chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. I actually came away from this book feeling proud of what the citizens of Morbi accomplished during the rebuilding of their city, in spite of a Government that seemed to be most interested in suppressing the report from the Machhu Dam-II Inquiry Commission, and elected officials who were focused on fixing blame on the 'other' political party, rather than on the rebirth of the 'Paris of India.'

Morbi was rebuilt to be bigger and wealthier than before the flood, then suffered another round of devastation during a 2001 earthquake centered just north of the Gulf of Kutch. So the authors were surprised to find that "the Machhu dam disaster remained 'the' disaster for the city's inhabitants...Although the region had transformed radically in the intervening decades, the disaster of 1979 remained a definitive event in the local consciousness."

Estimates of the number of dead from the Machhu dam break range from 1500 to 15000 people, but the focus of "No One had a Tongue to Speak" is quite rightly on the survivors.

A vivid, thought-provoking tale of a natural disaster and the ensuing relief and recovery efforts, shifting of blame, and socioeconomic implications. Bravo for entering into the public memory a tale that might soon have been forgotten.

How to Become a Really Good Pain in the Ass: A Critical Thinker's Guide to Asking the Right Questions, by Christopher Dicarlo

In this witty, incisive guide to critical thinking the author provides you with the tools to allow you to question beliefs and assumptions held by those who claim to know what they’re talking about. These days there are many people whom we need to question: politicians, lawyers, doctors, teachers, clergy members, bankers, car salesmen, and your boss. This book will empower you with the ability to spot faulty reasoning and, by asking the right sorts of questions, hold people accountable not only for what they believe but how they behave.

By using this book you’ll learn to analyze your own thoughts, ideas, and beliefs, and why you act on them (or don’t). This, in turn, will help you to understand why others might hold opposing views. And the best way to change our own or others’ behavior or attitudes is to gain greater clarity about underlying motives and thought processes.

In a media-driven world of talking heads, gurus, urban legends, and hype, learning to think more clearly and critically, and helping others to do the same, is one of the most important things you can do.

"Faulty reasoning is frustrating and has become ubiquitous—astonishingly even in academic circles. Do your part to help stem the tide of pseudoscience and other breathtaking absurdities by reading and enacting the shrewd ideas of How to Become a Really Good Pain in the Ass." --Brian Alters, PhD, author of Defending Evolution

"This is a wonderful introduction to the art of thinking. DiCarlo is to be commended for presenting philosophically challenging material in an engaging and accessible manner, while demonstrating both the relevance and the moral significance of critical thinking. It is well designed to prepare the reader to be 'a really good pain in the ass,' and to convince you that this is a good thing to be." --John Teehan, professor of religion, Hofstra University, author, In the Name of God: The Evolutionary Origins of Religious Ethics and Violence

"Chris DiCarlo's How to Become a Really Good Pain in the Ass, is certainly different from your typical logic book. For one thing, it ranges from Aristotle to Steven Spielberg to Shakespeare to Tom Nagel to...well, you get the idea! Anyone who reads through this book is going to emerge with a broad education, and with a solid acquaintance with a great many principles of elementary logic, plus an introduction to epistemology, the philosophy of religion, and a lot more (including, recent and prominent findings in evolutionary biology and biosociology drawn from serious sources). DiCarlo combines real erudition with a very down-to-earth, upbeat expository style, which should attract many readers." --Jan Narveson, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, philosophy, University of Waterloo

"Lively and entertaining in an informal but important manner, this work on critical reasoning should be read by students in all fields." --Michael Ruse, director of the program in history and philosophy of science, Florida State University

"A perceptive, incisive critical thinker is the very best pain in the ass there is. This book is DiCarlo's enlightening master class in critical thinking, couched in language any curious reader can profit from. From an introduction to formal logic that everyone can understand to a guide to the big questions about knowledge, meaning, ethics, and purpose in life, it's all in here—buttressed by exemplary unpackings of religious, paranormal, and pseudo-scientific bunkum." --Tom Flynn, editor of Free Inquiry magazine, executive director of the Council for Secular Humanism, and editor of The New Encyclopedia of Unbelief

Useful Guide to Critical Thinking
By Book Fanatic
I consider this book a very worthwhile introduction to critical thinking for those new to the topic and a useful refresher for the rest of us. Considering the topic, the book is quite easy to read; without sacrificing quality. It is an interesting combination of instruction in the principles of critical thinking and what the author calls the "Big Five Questions". I enjoyed this approach and I think most others will as well.

The author begins by describing arguments and how to understand them. He follows that up with chapters on biases, context, and basic ideas of logic and the various types of evidence and methods of reasoning. He has an excellent chapter on the most common fallacies. The final section of the book asks the big five questions and contrasts a naturalistic answer with a supernatural answer. Make no mistake, the author is not simply splitting the difference. He comes down very heavily on the side of methodological naturalism. In providing the supernatural answers he shows how they come up short.

This book has a very good look inside content and I recommend you check that out. You will thereby get a good idea what you are getting before you buy. This book was well done and I recommend it.

Excellent on critical thinking...less so on application
By J. Bristow
I found Pain in the Ass to be an interesting read: not as good as I had hoped but not a complete waste of time either. The book is divided into three parts--Pt I is a very excellent review and explanation (depending on the reader's experience and knowledge of critical thinking literature) of critical thinking, debate, persuasive discourse, and argumentation skills and principles. Fairly complete and well done. Not to deep on theory and very readable. This portion alone makes the book worth the read if this is a subject in which you are seeking more information. Pt II is a discussion of the Socratic methodology and history of the Skeptics principles. I found this section disjointed and hard to read in spite of considerable training in the subject. Its style is such that the author appears to be trying to put forth an academic import to the work and missed badly. This section is overpacked with minutae which does not flow and does not improve any of the points. This is a '1-star' section. Pt III is the application section in which the author attempts to use the framework built in parts 1 (successfully) and 2 (less so) to answer the "5 Big Questions". I was not a fan of framing the entire premise of critical thinking with the 5 Big Questions (nor are they what I consider the "Big 5"); however, the section is useful in its discussion and seems to be without glaring problems. Chapters 10 & 11 have several very minor inconsistencies in their discussions of genographics, evolution and climatology but this is not a treatise on those subjects and they do not detract from the premise. My only problem with Pt III is not liking the '5 Question' framework makes this section less interesting. I read some chapters fully, carefully and critically and found others that were barely worth a light skim.

Overall, I am glad I read the book but I would only recommend it to friends with caveats and explanations.

How to Become a Really Good Pain
By dragon lady
This book is just what anyone interested in becoming a critical thinker needs to set them on the path of understanding the basis of other's arguments and what questions to ask in order to spot faulty reasons for the things they believe. Beginning answering five key questions: What can I know? What am I? Why am I here? How should I behave? What is to become of me? it is possible to learn a great deal about yourself and others. Those answers in large part determine why people believe certain "truths" even though there is no scientific basis for doing so. DiCarlo goes on to demonstrate how to argue effectively, ways of overcoming the biases we all have, what makes for sound science and so much more. Whether it is common fallacies, dealing with conflicting perceptions or belief in the supernatural, DiCarlo clearly demonstrates how a person's experiences and belief system (or lack of) color their view of themselves and the world around them.

Rather then a dry dissertation, this is a light, approachable read that can be enjoyed by anyone with an open mind and a willingness to look at their beliefs with a critical eye. Matters of the supernatural, religion, pseudoscience and philosophy are given the same insightful evaluations that tie age-old beliefs with the latest research findings. It's too bad a copy of this can't be presented to all first year college students because with the tools provided, it would be possible to develop the necessary lifelong skills to have more productive arguments and reasoned responses to those around them.

"The creators of The Gum Chewing Rattler (2006) concoct another outlandish episode with a twist in its tale … A shaggy snake story certain to elicit hoots and hollers aplenty from young audiences."—Kirkus Reviews

“…Comic relief and gallows humor combine effortlessly. My Pet Rattlesnake ends with a bang or a rattle, and like all tall tales, grows taller with the telling.” —The Midwest Book Review

I like this book. It was really good even though I do not like snakes! It was about a boy and a snake and how they became best friends.

I can't stop reading this series
By A Customer
Another Amy is the third book in the Replica series. The book has a lot of details and exciting parts. If you like to read books with lots of suspense, then you will love this book because the author Marilyn Kaye does that. She brings the reader right into the story as if you are with Amy the main character the entire time. In addition, if you like to visualize while you read, it's very easy to see everything that's happening.
Another Amy is about a 13-year-old girl that is different from other 13-year-old girls. She has special powers. She is much stronger, faster, and smarter than other 13 -year- old girls. You can learn a lot more about Amy's powers, and how she got them in the first book, Amy Number Seven, or the second book, Pursuing Amy. In addition, if you don't read the first two books first you will be very confused because you won't know who any of the characters are.
In this book, Amy found out that the school was going to let a movie take place at their school. It was going to be called Middle School Maniac. Amy's best friend Tasha was a journalist for the school newspaper so she wonted to interview the director, Mr. Hardy, about the movie. When Tasha and Amy got to the trailer the director wasn't around but one of the actors was. When Amy saw her, she was shocked. The girl looked like her twin. She had the same eyes, mouth, size, shape, and bone structure. The only difference was that Aimee the actor that was her name had blond hair but that was only because she dyed it for the movie. Amy knew that Aimee was another Amy. Aimee started screaming for the guard but Amy and Tasha left before the guard got there. Amy was desperate to find out if Aimee really was one of her clones. She had Eric, Tasha's older brother, try out to be an extra in the movie. He was in the movie. His main goal was to see if Aimee had the crescent moon on her right shoulder blade. During the swimming pool scene, Eric saw the moon on her back. Amy is kidnapped at the pool. However, the kidnappers had gotten the wrong girl. Aimee had planned for herself to be kidnapped so she could get noticed by the media.
Amy decided she has to tell Aimee who she really is. She has to know how much danger she is in.
I would rate this book as a five because it has a lot of detail and action. Also as you read you, don't want to stop reading, you want to know what happens next. And you are able to make great pictures in your head as you read.

Interesting Story But Could Have Been Written Better
By Amazon Customer
Each book in this series is not necessarily an entire story unto itself. I found the prose and the characters a bit too simplistic. For example, Amy's mother, who should be deeply worried about her daughter, lets her get involved in all sorts of trouble, saying just, "I can't make your decisions for you, but remember I always love you." This does not sound like the mother a twelve year old girl. And, while the story eventually turns interesting, it takes a long time to get started. Considering the nature of the plot, that Amy is a superhuman clone being hunted by the agency who created her, I expected a little more complexity and excitement.
In this novel, Amy discovers that a movie crew is coming to her middle school to shoot a horror film. The author doesn't take advantage of this scary set-up. Rather, she presents another possible clone of Amy as the stuck-up star of the film. For the rest of the novel, Amy tries to contact the other girl, Aimee. She longs so much to be close to her, another clone, someone who will understand her. She is sure that someone with the same genetics will also be the same in all other areas. But things turn dangerous as Amy finally gets to know the real Aimee.

A suspensful and interesting chapter to the Replica series.
By wrong_number
After finding out that she had eleven other clones in the world, Amy Candler was determined to find one of them. Now, a movie is being filmed at her school called "Middle School Maniac." Every student is excited about it--especially Amy. Because when she takes a look at the main star, Aimee Evans, she notices a resemblance--Aimee looks exactly like her. There's no doubt about it that Aimee is one of the twelve clones, just like Amy. But as she tries to befriend Aimee, she realizes that something isn't right. Aimee may look like her, but she's different...completely different. She's evil.

When I started reading the first Replica book, I couldn't wait to read the rest of the series. After learning the plot of the third chapter in the series, I couldn't wait to read it, as I was anxiously waiting for Amy to finally meet another clone...and an evil one is much more interesting. This book was a page-turner, and the ending had me wanting to read more and more. I can't get enough of these books, and neither will you.

Title and Deed / Oh, the Humanity and other good intentions, by Will Eno

"A haunting and often fiercely funny meditation on life as a state of permanent exile... The marvel of Mr. Eno’s voice is how naturally it combines a carefully sculptured lyricism with sly, poker-faced humor. Everyday phrases and familiar platitudes—‘Don’t ever change,’ ‘Who knows’—are turned inside out or twisted into blunt, unexpected punch lines punctuating long rhapsodic passages that leave you happily word-drunk." —Charles Isherwood, New York Times on Title and Deed

"Title and Deed is daring within its masquerade of the mundane, spectacular within its minimalism and hilarious within its display of po-faced bewilderment. It is a clown play that capers at the edge of the abyss... Eno’s voice is unique; his play is stage poetry of a high order. You can’t see the ideas coming in Title and Deed. When they arrive—tiptoeing in with a quiet yet startling energy—you don’t quite know how they got there. In this tale’s brilliant telling, it is not the narrator who proves unreliable but life itself. The unspoken message of Eno’s smart, bleak musings seems to be: enjoy the nothingness while you can." —John Lahr, New Yorker

"Eno is a supreme monologist, using a distinctive, edgy blend of non sequiturs and provisional statements to explore the fragility of our existence... There are a lot of words, but they are always exquisitely chosen... Oh, the Humanity reveals that we are beautiful walking tragedies blinking with absurd optimism into the camera lens of history." —Lyn Gardner, Guardian

Known for his wry humor and deeply moving plays, Will Eno's "gift for articulating life's absurd beauty and its no less absurd horrors may be unmatched among writers of his generation" (New York Times). This new volume of the acclaimed playwright's work includes five short plays about being alive—Behold the Coach, in a Blazer, Uninsured; Ladies and Gentlemen, the Rain; Enter the Spokeswoman, Gently; The Bully Composition; and Oh, the Humanity—as well as Title and Deed, a haunting and severely funny solo rumination on life as everlasting exile.

WILL ENO is a fellow of Residency Five at Signature Theatre Company in New York. His play The Open House premiered at Signature in 2014, and received an Obie Award, the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Play, and a Drama Desk Special Award. His play The Realistic Joneses premiered at Yale Repertory Theatre in 2012, and was produced on Broadway in 2014, for which he and the cast received a Drama Desk Special Award. His play Title and Deed premiered at Signature in 2012 and was presented at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2014. Both Title and Deed and The Realistic Joneses were included in the New York Times Best Plays List of 2012. Gnit, an adaption of Ibsen’s Peer Gynt, premiered at Actors Theatre of Louisville in 2013. Middletown, winner of the Horton Foote Prize, premiered at the Vineyard Theatre in New York in 2010, and was then produced at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago in 2011. Thom Pain (based on nothing) was a finalist for the 2005 Pulitzer Prize and has been translated into many languages. Amazon.com Review
Sixty years have passed since a curious little chimp in Africa met the man with the big yellow hat and got into the first of many scrapes. Decades later, George is as curious--and naughty--as ever. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Curious George's debut, this special edition is a collection of seven classic adventures by Margret and H.A. Rey, along with an introduction by critic Leonard Marcus, a retrospective note by publisher Anita Silvey, a history of the Reys by Dee Jones, curator of the de Grummond Children's Literature Collection, and a photo album. The many generations of fans of the "good little monkey who was always very curious" will be fascinated to learn how H.A. and Margret escaped on bicycle from German-occupied Paris, with just their winter coats and several picture books (including a draft of Curious George, then called Fifi) strapped to the racks. Photos and essays reveal H.A. to have been a gentle, humorous man, while Margret, by all accounts, was spirited and brutally direct, with a keen business mind. The chemistry between them worked beautifully. Between them, they created one of the most beloved characters in children's literature. This handsome volume includes Curious George, Curious George Takes a Job, Curious George Rides a Bike, Curious George Gets a Medal, Curious George Flies a Kite, Curious George Learns the Alphabet, and Curious George Goes to the Hospital. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

Review
An introduction by Madeleine L'Engle opens this in-depth collection of Curious George stories, which should be a 'must' for any George fan. Here are the same compelling tales and original drawings, but packaged in a thick 300+ page book which provides all the Curious George a parent or child could want. Recommended as 'the' definitive George collection. -- Midwest Book Review

Classic stories bound in a cheap binding
By Daniel L. Edelen
What can be added to classic stories like these? The content of this collection is unimpeachable, so I'll pass and skip onto what downgraded the collection.
In short, this is a very shoddily constructed book. My wife and I carefully handled it when reading to our son, but within a couple days the page bundles were separating from the binding in two spots. This has progressed at such a rate that the whole book is threatening to come apart.
This is inexcusable, particularly given the thickness of the book. If you make a collection like this that will be heavily used and will certainly be handled less than gingerly by children, you better make it strong. That ours got wonky while being read from by two responsible adults makes it worse. Shame on Houghton Mifflin for producing such a poorly made book!
We purchased "The Complete Adventures of Curious George" in the hopes of saving a few dollars over purchasing all seven of the included stories separately. In light of the poor quality, though, it has proven itself to be a terrible value. Check out other options rather than purchasing a book sure to self-destruct.

Adorable

This book set is perfect for my two year old. He asks to read it over and over, or just sits and "reads" it himself, pointing to the pictures and naming things, and best of all, kissing the bunnies.

Red treasury is better. Stories are long and wind around too much. Little too curious to be enjoyable.

The Real Story of Risk: Adventures in a Hazardous World, by Glenn Croston

We live in a world of risk. It waits for us in our refrigerator and surrounds us on the freeway. It's lurking in our arteries and sitting in our 401(k) accounts. Given that we deal with risk on a constant basis, we should be good at it; as it turns out, though, we're not. We're blind to common risks like heart disease (one in five deaths), but we shrink in fear from rare events like shark attacks (one in a million) and airplane crashes (one in twenty thousand). What accounts for our poor ability to perceive and react to the risks that really matter?

Starting from an evolutionary perspective, the author traces our distorted perception of risk back to our ancestors, reminding readers that we are all the culmination of a long line of survivors who fought life-and-death threats such as attacks from wild animals, starvation, and disease. The fact that we have covered Earth with seven billion people is a testament to our skill at overcoming these risks. But our spectacular success has also produced our contemporary artificial world with new threats like climate change, chili dogs, and online gambling. Our brains, which evolved to deal with the ancient world, are ill equipped to process the new threats we face.

Croston examines the many facets of our hazardous modern environment that we only dimly perceive. He explains why we let our guard down for a beautiful face, why slow-moving risks (like rising seas) are hard to stop, how a good story (though false) can be more persuasive than dry statistics (even alarming ones), what we fear even more than death, and many other intriguing quirks about our built-in incompetence to adequately handle present-day risks.

Offering a wealth of fascinating information about health, sex, money, safety, food, and the environment, this book illuminates an often-misunderstood but crucial aspect of daily life.

From Booklist
Almost everyone knows auto accidents kill far more people than airline crashes, yet the incidence of aerophobia (fear of flying) is disproportionately high. Likewise, fear of sharks still inspires the occasional toothsome Hollywood thriller decades after Jaws, despite the low number of attacks (only 25 Americans killed in 50 years). In dissecting risks such as the above, along with those associated with phenomena ranging from heart attacks to online gambling, Croston, a San Diego–based biotech research scientist, emphases that brute emotion usually trumps bare statistics when people weigh any given threat. Much of skewed risk perception dates back to our ancient ancestors and their adrenaline-fueled reactions to predators. Our brains simply haven’t caught up to such contemporary dangers as giving speeches and financial meltdowns. After examining our forebears’ influence, Croston analyzes why mankind is incongruously slow in addressing climate change and demonstrates how the pursuit of love and sex provoke extreme risk taking. Lucid and full of fascinating examples, Croston’s work sheds much-needed light on the psychological underpinnings of our contradictory attitudes toward danger. --Carl Hays

Review
"A tour de force on the topic of why we take the chances we do and avoid the ones we don't. You'll never look at your life's risks the same way again."
- Aaron Klein, CEO of Riskalyze

"Beautifully researched and explained, The Real Story of Risk presents an understanding of why we do the things we do. Croston masterfully shows us why we choose short-term thinking over long-term, why we prefer willful ignorance over informed logic, and why we'd rather die than speak to a group of people. This fascinating book provides insight into our muddled human nature and answers how to overcome it and live more sustainably."
- Eric Corey Freed, Founding principal of organicARCHITECT and coauthor of Green$ense for the Home

"Risk taking is not to be idolized, nor should it be condemned. Risk in everyday life is like salt in our soup: the best amount is neither too much nor too little. That is what The Real Story of Risk shows in an entertaining and informative way with documented data and interesting anecdotes."
-Gerald J. S. Wilde, Author of Target Risk

"As Croston cleverly points out, although humans are well adapted, through our evolutionary history, to react to immediate risks, we are much less able to respond to slowly approaching, less obvious, future risks. We are able to anticipate and prepare for a possible tiger attack but unable to stop eating ourselves to a heart attack or to understand the dangers of massive world changes caused by global warming. Croston provides excellent advice as to how we might better respond to these future, long-term risks."
-Robert W. Sussman, Professor of anthropology at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri

Evolutionary, biological perspective on the ways that people perceive and respond to risk
By E. Jaksetic
The author, a biologist, contends that people perceive and respond to risk in a variety of ways because of evolutionary and biological reasons that influence and sometimes interfere with their thinking about risks, benefits, and the tradeoffs between them. The author draws on a combination of scientific studies, government data, books, articles, news stories, interviews, and anecdotes to support his observations, contentions, and arguments about how people perceive and assess risks and benefits, and make choices in the face of their conclusions about them.

This book provides an interesting perspective on how people think about risks and respond to them. It is written in a style that does not require readers to have technical training or knowledge about risk analysis or human psychology. This book provides a decent introduction to the subject, but it is too brief and cursory to be relied on as a definitive source or reference. Readers interested in a technical, in-depth discussion of risk perception and risk-benefit analysis should look at other books. Some of the material in this book might be of interest to people who want to read about human error and decision-making.

Incredible!
By Calrocker
This book is truly an eye-opener. Using entertaining anecdotes and immutable logic, the author makes it quite clear that we constantly overestimate certain risks that aren't anywhere near as dangerous as many other risks that we underestimate or completely ignore.

In addition to being an entertaining and thought-provoking read, this book actually might save your life. The first chapter will grab you and have you riveted to your seat.

How to Look at Personal Risks
By Michael Schultz
I enjoyed this easy-to-read book. At first, I thought it might be about industrial risks as that is my interest as I am a quality engineer by profession. I have assessed risks formally via technical risk assessments for the medical device and aerospace business. I was hoping there might some "risk assessment" tools described in this book that might be new to me.
None the less, the book is about personal risks - which can be applied with regards to human factors risk assessments.
I am intested in the subject of "risk homeostasis" or risk thermostat which is rarely covered in risk assessment books
but Glenn covered nicely with his examples of seat belts and SUVs. Another example is the first use of RADAR, used
by British in WWII as a ground-based enemy detection system. Then, somebody said, "lets put it IN the aircraft. That way
we can fly at night, into clouds, etc." You know what then happened - until after the learning curve. Risk Homeostasis really does exist - with all of us. The chapter of teenage drivers really moved me along with "what's worse than dying", i.e., public speaking. I had read that why people fear public speaking goes back to our ancestors and being watched by lions.
