An Army of Lovers, by David Buuck, Juliana Spahr

"This experimental work is not for the faint of heart, but it is laced with meditations that will appeal to readers concerned with poetry’s role in the world."--Publishers Weekly

"I am fascinated by their attention to inequality, to questions of violence and community: something borne out by the collaboration itself."--Bhana Kapil's Best Books of 2013 on The Volta

"An Army of Lovers explores the liminal spaces where cities and individuals come together and stand apart with strange, brainy grace."--Michelle Tea, author of Mermaid in Chelsea Creek

An Army of Lovers begins with the story of two poets, Demented Panda and Koki, united in their desire to write politically engaged poetry at a time when poetry seems to have lost its ability to effect social change. Their first project is more than a failure, resulting in a spell that unleashes a torrent of raw sewage and surrealistic embodiments of consumerist excess and black site torture techniques. Subsequent chapters feature an experimental composer (Koki?) and a performance artist (Panda?) whose bodies are literally invaded with the ills of capitalism, manifested through leaking blisters and other maladies, as well as a radical remix of a Raymond Carver story, questioning “What We Talk About When We Talk About Poetry.” The novel concludes with Panda and Koki returning to the site of their failed collaboration to conjure up a more utopian vision of “an army of lovers.” Fantastical, lyrical, whimsical and wildly experimental, An Army of Lovers is as serious as it is absurd.

From Publishers Weekly
This avant-garde debut novel from poets Spahr and Buuck eschews convention while containing flashes of surprising humor and insight. The novel opens and concludes with the story of Demented Panda and Koki, two mediocre San Francisco Bay Area poets who decide to collaborate. Their planned epic poem is about a vacant lot on the border of two cities, but after a summer of talking, Demented Panda has written nothing, and Koki has produced so much that it&'s the same as nothing. Subsequent sections tell the story of a composer infected with a mysterious illness, and a reworking of a Raymond Carver story is offered. The links between these sections are tenuous, although descriptions of illness and observations of the roles of art in society create a thematic unity. The deprecations of the poets&' processes in the Demented Panda and Koki sections are funny, and the observations about art in the other sections are sobering. However, many readers will question the point of the disjointed narrative, and several sequences describing the manifestations of the mystery illnesses are hard to take. This experimental work is not for the faint of heart, but it is laced with meditations that will appeal to readers concerned with poetry&'s role in the world. (Oct.)

Review
"These are stories told with one foot in the Summer of Love and the other in the sewer."--Adam Park, Eleven Eleven Journal

#BESTBOOKEVER
By red zeplin
Once your friends have gone to jail and back for being beaten and for having less-lethal explosives throw at them and you get the sense that it's hard for some of them to be with others of them in the same room to pick a place to occupy or whatever and the one that you tried to do something with that wasn't part of the normal program of couples and capital and hell decides no to be your lover in any way any more and you've lost your maps and you can no longer tell if you are even capable of deepening the crisis in anyway anymore ARMY OF LOVERS becomes not just a great book but the best book ever.

Interesting Variety, Doable, Inviting But Not Spectacular
By mary_mac
This sampler (12 separate recipes total) was a pre-order from May and it just arrived. In looking through for layout, ease of reading and following along before delving into the recipes to see what's in store, the first thing noticed is that there is no Table of Contents, clickable or not. The "Look Inside" feature doesn't show one either, so here's the lineup: Red Velvet Macaroons, Chocolate Hazelnut Cake, Bollywood Cupcakes (Vegan), Chewy Ginger-Molasses Cookies (Vegan), Chocolate Decadent Bites, All-American Pear Cranberry Pot Pie, Cranberry Apple Syrup (goes with the pie), Flaky Walnut Cookies, Buttermilk Blueberry Cobbler, Oatmeal Cream Pies, Black & White Cookies, and Sporty Sugar Cookies.

What makes the absence of a clickable TOC annoying is that there are almost an equal number of ads and non-recipe pages as there are pages devoted to recipes: A picture of the chef's book precedes each chef's offering, followed by a short (usually 1-page) narrative, then two recipes (most but not all with pictures), ends with another ad, then the next cookbook cover ad, then that narrative, then finally two more recipes. Because this is a "sampler," expecting oodles of recipes is not realistic but, in the absence of a clickable TOC, needing to scroll or flip through all of the ads did not endear me to this sampler book overall.

The value, however, is in cooking from scratch, clear instructions -- Buddy Valastro's section is particularly rich with how-to instructions (if you've had problems with or never made frosted cookies, this is the section to read) -- brief but helpful tips and tricks, and an e-book taste of hardcover/physical cookbook quality. The recipes themselves are inviting, doable, don't require unusual ingredients, and the e-book delivers what the title promises: A sampler. Additionally, although I'm not Vegan, I was impressed that a section comes from Vegan Chef Chloe Coscarelli. The one recipe that caught my eye was Carla Hall's "All-American Cranberry Pot Pie" (and her Cranberry Apple Syrup). She doesn't include a dough or pie crust recipe so you'll have to find your own, but the ingredients appear to be a nice combination that offers something different. Thanksgiving weekend pot pies here we come, and I'll add leftover turkey to make it a meal rather than a dessert.

I'm torn between 3-4 stars, especially because margarine and canola oil are called for in some recipes and there are no nutritional breakdowns with any, but opted for four stars based on variety, clarity, and overall appeal of the sampler recipes chosen. For free, as indicated in the publisher blurb, definitely. If the price or offering changes in the coming months, then recommendation is 99-cents, yes; $1.99, maybe; anything higher would depend upon how much one is willing to pay for a recipe or two that catches the eye.

try the ginger cookies!
By Claudia J. Frier
Holy crow! The ginger cookie recipe is the bomb! My mom made it for me. She put the dough in the fridge for about an hour after making it. It helped it to be easier to handle. They come out soft and chewy just how I like. We did however use I can't believe it's not butter instead of vegan butter. We also set the sticks out to come to room a little. Just might have yo buy that book the one came from. I'm also a type 2 diabetic and these did not hike my sugar up like regular cookies do and I eat like 3 at a time.

Not enough recipes
By R. Kramer
I only found one recipe I could use out of this book. When this book was first ordered it was delayed which is fine, but to be fair I don't remember it claiming only to be a sampler so that's my fault. So I did think I was getting more recipes. Some of them were just to hard to get into and I know how to cook and bake so I don't think some people could do these without some fear of doing them right. But that's just my opinion.

Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) in der Schule (German Edition), by Ines Priegnitz

Someone Else's Twin: The True Story of Babies Switched at Birth, by Nancy L. Segal

The combination of a riveting true story and cutting-edge twin research makes this book an irresistible page-turner.

Identical twins Begoña and Delia were born thirty-eight years ago in Spain’s Canary Islands. Due to chaotic conditions at the hospital or simple human error, the unthinkable happened: Delia was unintentionally switched with another infant in the baby nursery. This fascinating story describes in vivid detail the consequences of this unintentional separation of identical twin sisters. The author considers not only the effects on these particular sisters, but the important implications of this and similar cases for questions concerning identity, familial bonds, nature-nurture, and the law.

Review
"Insightful . . . with a solid mix of clinical observations . . . and compassionate reflections[,] Segal assesses complex legal, moral, and ethical questions." --Publishers Weekly

"On its face Someone Else's Twin is a gifted researcher's exploration of the moral and legal crises that resulted when a hospital failed at a routine task and switched twins at birth, denying them each other. But the book is also a profound and heartbreaking mystery story that confronts the issue of personal identity and provides answers to questions that have stumped us all: Who am I? Where did I come from? Where am I going?" --John Ed Bradley, author of Tupelo Nights and Restoration

"With the frequency of twinning almost doubling in the last thirty years, Segal's thorough yet affecting work serves as a modern window into nature versus nurture and the wrenching consequences of inadvertently twisted family ties. In some cases, the black sheep of a family is not a black sheep at all, just a misplaced one." --Preston Williams, Washington Post staff writer

"As an identical twin, Someone Else's Twin is a very personal story for me. I was struck by how Nancy Segal so poignantly portrayed the plight of twins switched at birth. It's beyond belief to me that the closeness I've come to share with my twin sister might never have been possible had this kind of switch happened to us. Truly a nightmare. Segal's attention to detail and professional and personal insight make this a fascinating read." --Nancy Stern Winters, Lookalike Productions

"Nancy Segal introduces the reader to a thought-provoking examination of who we are as individuals, demonstrating how easily that can all change through the carelessness of another. As a parent of monozygotic twins, and as a volunteer dedicated to improving the lives of multiple-birth individuals and their families, it is heartbreaking and overwhelmingly sad to see the long-term impact a mistake at birth can have on the lives and relationships of everyone involved." --Kimberley Weatherall, Chair, International Council of Multiple Birth Organizations (ICOMBO); acting executive director, Multiple Births Canada (MBC)

"Noted twin-study expert Segal... doubles the fascination with switched-at-birth twin research... Segal's study of switched-at-birth twins reveals much insight into the nature-vs.-nurture paradigm... An expert glimpse into the many-faceted world of genetics, family culture and identity." --Kirkus Reviews

'Segal writes clearly and passionately, and yet she rarely strays from the precise language of a social scientist. The result is an engaging narrative intertwined with a careful attempt to draw sound conclusions from the facts... The book has much to tell us about the ways in which genes, environments and their interactions shape who we are.' --Wall Street Journal (WSJ.com, Bookshelf) Sept 14, 2011

Interesting subject matter made tedious by poor writing
By Rachael
When I first learned of this book I was very excited to read it. I'm interested in twins, and the bonds between them, and, in addition to that, I lived in Spain for 18 months. However, the book is so poorly written that it makes a very intriguing story almost tedious to read. She shares way too much information that is unimportant, and give too many of her own opions which color the way the viewer sees the people involved. Interesting story, terribly written.

From a Reader not Astroturf
By N. Podolsky
As an adopted child, I'm extremely interested in the topic, yet Ms. Segal's dry style and repetitiveness of the information in the book bored me. In the hands of a more creative writer, the stories would've been more suspenseful and enjoyable to read. Ms. Segal spent too much time on the setup, on how she'd gotten to Canary Islands, on how wonderful her translator was, e.t.c. The speech of the family members involved in the switch sounded as if they had a Ph.D. instead of being cooks and dishwashers; it lacked authenticity.

If you're not an academic, skip this book. If you are, I can't give you advice.

Stranger Than Fiction; An Amazing Twin Tale
By Joan Friedman
I just finished reading Someone Else's Twin - a great title, by the way!
Nancy Segal is a truly gifted investigative reporter - her research skills and knowledge add a tremendous sensibility to her lively writing style.
It is very evident that this book is a labor of love; it defines Segal's focused dedication to understanding the underpinnings of twinship.
Twenty-eight year old female identical twins inadvertently discover that they were switched at birth. The book chronicles how the lives of the twins and their families were impacted by this discovery. Segal discusses in vivid detail the psychological, legal, and sociological ramifications of such an event. Her tale is moving, and Segal does an excellent job describing how such a discovery can have both positive and negative outcomes. She presents the material in an evenhanded manner, bravely examining the joy as well as the sadness and emotional trauma involved in such a discovery in adulthood.

The American Way of Poverty: How the Other Half Still Lives, by Sasha Abramsky

Selected as A Notable Book of the Year by The New York Times Book Review

Fifty years after Michael Harrington published his groundbreaking book The Other America, in which he chronicled the lives of people excluded from the Age of Affluence, poverty in America is back with a vengeance. It is made up of both the long-term chronically poor and new working poor—the tens of millions of victims of a broken economy and an ever more dysfunctional political system. In many ways, for the majority of Americans, financial insecurity has become the new norm.

The American Way of Poverty shines a light on this travesty. Sasha Abramsky brings the effects of economic inequality out of the shadows and, ultimately, suggests ways for moving toward a fairer and more equitable social contract. Exploring everything from housing policy to wage protections and affordable higher education, Abramsky lays out a panoramic blueprint for a reinvigorated political process that, in turn, will pave the way for a renewed War on Poverty.

It is, Harrington believed, a moral outrage that in a country as wealthy as America, so many people could be so poor. Written in the wake of the 2008 financial collapse, in an era of grotesque economic extremes, The American Way of Poverty brings that same powerful indignation to the topic.

From Booklist
Not since the Great Depression have so many Americans been counted among the poor. Freelance reporter Abramsky explores poverty in America 50 years after Michael Harrington’s groundbreaking book, The Other America. Abramsky offers historical perspective, detailing how poverty as well as social attitudes and public policy regarding poverty have changed. He points to the antitax policies of conservatives that have contributed to growing income inequality in the U.S. and growing concerns most evident in the Occupy movement and protest for the 99 percent versus the 1 percent. From Appalachia to Hawaii, from inner cities to rural areas, from families suffering intergenerational poverty to victims of the recent housing crisis, Abramsky’s portraits of the poor illustrate three striking points: the isolation, diversity—people with no jobs and people with multiple jobs—and resilience of the poor. Drawing on ideas from a broad array of equality advocates, Abramsky offers detailed policies to address poverty, including reform in education, immigration, energy, taxation, criminal justice, housing, Social Security, and Medicaid, as well as analysis of tax and spending policies that could reduce inequities. --Vanessa Bush

Review
"Abramsky has written an ambitious book that both describes and prescribes. He reaches across a wised range of issues-including education, housing and criminal justice- in a sweeping panorama of poverty's elements. Assembling them in one volume forces him to be superficial on occasion, but that price is worth paying to get the broad scope... Abramsky has invited serious rethinking and issued a significant call to action."
—David Shipler, New York Times Book Review

"[An] extraordinary book... extremely well researched and thorough..."
—Los Angeles Review of Books

"Abramsky's approach is both heartbreaking in its look at the humans who are affected and inspiring in his explanations of how poverty can be addressed and improved... The American Way of Poverty is likely to cause fear--almost no one is exempt from unplanned disasters--but it is also likely to motivate: there are answers; this country can and should improve. Well researched and documented, Abramsky's eye-opening book should be required reading for all U.S. citizens."
—Shelf Awareness

"[A] searing exposé... Abramsky's is a challenging indictment of an economy in which poverty and inequality at the bottom seem like the foundation for prosperity at the top."
—Publishers Weekly, (starred review)

“[This] portrait of poverty is one of great complexity and diversity, existential loneliness and desperation—but also amazing resilience…Abramsky’s well-researched, deeply felt depiction of poverty is eye-opening, and his outrage is palpable. He aims to stimulate discussion, but whether his message provokes action remains to be seen.”
—Kirkus Reviews

"Abramsky's portraits of the poor illustrate three striking points: the isolation, diversity-people with no jobs and people with multiple jobs-and resilience of the poor. Drawing on ideas from a broad array of equality advocates, Abramsky offers detailed policies to address poverty, including reform in education, immigration, energy, taxation, criminal justice, housing, Social Security, and Medicaid, as well as analysis of tax and spending policies that could reduce inequities."
—Booklist

"Sasha Abramsky takes us deep into the long dark night of poverty in America, and it’s a harrowing trip. His research and remarkable insights have resulted in a book that is stunning in its intensity."
—Bob Herbert, Distinguished Senior Fellow at Demos and former Op-Ed columnist for the New York Times

"Incisive and necessary, The American Way of Poverty is a call to action."
—Lynn Nottage, Pulitzer-prize-winning playwright

“This is a devastating, passionate, and important investigative work.”
—Joe Sacco, author of Palestine, Footnotes in Gaza, and co-author of Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt

"This urgent and compassionate inquiry breaks the pact of silence in which politicians refuse to talk about poverty and journalists refuse to investigate it. The spirit of Studs Terkel lives on in Sasha Abramsky. He listens to ordinary Americans speak hauntingly about their struggles to survive in a social welfare system designed by Franz Kafka. Every page reports an outrage, a chord in what might have become a requiem for the American Dream, were it not for Abramsky’s conviction that change is possible."
—Raj Patel, author of Stuffed and Starved and The Value of Nothing

"Sasha Abramsky writes compellingly and correctly that poverty is the 'canary' in the coal mine of our democracy. Moving stories are the fabric of the story of what we face as a nation as income disparity continues to increase. But this is more than a lament! It is a policy roadmap to reclaiming the most vibrant part of our nation: 'We the People.'”
—Sister Simone Campbell, SSS, Executive Director of NETWORK and leader of the Nuns on the Bus

In the land of Trust Funds and Food Stamps
By SInohey
In 2009 Mr. Abramsky published 'Breadline USA' that described hunger in low-income families and the detrimental impact of the financial crisis on their nutrition and its dire consequences on health, growth and development. Since then, things have gotten worse and "Poverty in America is back with a vengeance" when compared to Michael Harrington's chronicle of poverty in the 1960s (The Other America).
Abramsky builds on his previous book with this unvarnished realistic indictment of American society. The USA is the richest country on the planet and in recorded history, yet we have millions mired in poverty. We spend billions of dollars in aid to other countries (most of which hate us and even conspire for our destruction) or on weapons to invade and destroy real or perceived enemy states, yet our (dysfunctional) government enacts cuts to social programs because of "budget constraints"!
At the same time that more millionaires and billionaires are made each year, more people are falling below the poverty line. Abramsky writes, "the desirability of oligarchy supports the financial discrepancy as tool for social control" and "a corrosive brew capable of eating away at the underpinnings of democratic life itself." The newly disenfranchised, "millions of Americans who had economic security - and then lost it, have now joined the ranks of chronic multi-generational poor."

The 350+ book is divided into two main parts, following a Prologue. In the first half, Abramsky lays out the problem by the use of vignettes of real people stories and the impact of misguided government programs, interspersed by substantial research and analyses. The author delves into the causes of inequality and goes deeper than the intuitive blaming of drug addiction, lack of education, poor housing or the criminal (in)justice system. "There are people with no high school education who are poor, but there are also university graduates on food bank lines."

Abramsky suggests "Building a new and Better House" and lays out his plan, in part two of the book. He focuses mainly on public assistance and government financial support because "poverty is a scandal resulting from decisions taken, or not taken, by political and economic leaders." He has ideas about boosting the food stamps and school lunch programs, housing policy and wage protection; all supported by taxes.
The author also proposes an Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) along the lines of Social Security, financed by 0.25% - 1% addition to the payroll tax.

The book failings are - the grab bag of restorative ideas are not sharply defined, a lack of focus on the private sector for job creation, no outline for vocational education or apprenticeship programs and the author's inclination to arbitrarily increase taxes on upper incomes. Also, the EOF tax is a regressive flat tax that hits the lowest earners the hardest.

The fundamental cause at the root of income inequality is the concentrated ownership of wealth-creating, income-generating productive capital. To narrow the gap is not to just increase taxes but to advocate for solutions that systematically broaden private sector individual ownership of productive capital and to empower every American to accumulate over time a viable capital trust. This cannot be achieved by government taxpayer-supported welfare programs, but can only be accomplished by innovative financial engineering; by the participation of a willing competent government and a cooperative financial sector. (One can only dream).

As it is today the `War on Poverty' is a travesty, it has been lost a long time ago. Income inequality in America is at a record high. According to an analysis of tax filings, the income gap between the richest 1 percent of Americans and the other 99 percent widened to unprecedented levels in 2012. The top 1 percent of U.S. earners collected more than 19 percent of household income, breaking a record previously set in 1927. Income inequality in the United States has been growing for almost three decades.

There is no panacea to heal the crushing psychological insult of chronic penury, homelessness and inexorable despair of being marginalized by society. Abramsky has shed light on the plight of the invisible millions living in poverty. The book should be a wake-up call to America to heed the adage, "A society is judged by the way that it cares for its lowliest citizen" and "Charity begins at Home". Government, private sector and communities should band together to eradicate the scourge of poverty from America.

`The American Way of Poverty' is meant for the general public but should be essential reading for all public servants, especially the Executive and Legislative branches.

very well presented
By barbarajean oriani
I was enlightened by new ideas to help the indigent. Although I am a staunch Republican and the ideas presented were left leaning in that we need to redistribute incomes by taxation, it was wonderful how these new ideas would not only empower those that need the help up but would also help to mainstream them into society and at the same time reduce the ridiculous number of welfare programs that have not worked for decades in the fashion they have been utilized. We can only expect failure by doing the same as we have for the poor, from LBJ's time to present. The present system IS NOT working. Perhaps Abransky's ideas should be analyzed and be implemented into present programs. It is hopeful that a new system might work. It is not only the moral thing to do for those people entrenched in the cycle of poverty but also makes great economic sense for our American society as a whole.

I had higher expectations for this book. If you are searching for a book that will give you specialized information and insight into college consulting, this is not it. The majority of the information is very general and applicable to starting any business. This book really doesn't offer any information about how to develop contacts within the academic community, the application process or how to research scholarships and other forms of financial aid. Basically, it is just a business planning book with a specialized title.

Steampunk superheros in Victorian-era New York!

The Society of Paragons is gone--destroyed from within by traitors and enemies. With the death of The Industrialist and the rebirth the Iron-Clad as a monstrous half-human creature known as "The Shell," Lord Eschaton now has almost everything he needs to cover the world in fortified smoke and rebuild it in his image--everything except for the mechanical heart of the Automaton.

The device is nearer than he knows. Just across the East River, hiding in a Brooklyn junkyard, Sarah Stanton is trying to come to restore the mechanical man to life. But before she can rebuild her friend, she must first discover the indomitable power of her own heart and save herself. Only then will she be able to forge a ragtag group of repentant villains, damaged Paragons, and love-mad geniuses into the team of heroes known as "The Society of Steam."

Review
Praise for The Society of Steam:

"Written with the sort of breathless, excited narration you'd expect from a Victorian adventure novel. . . . A damn fun read."
- io9

"The Falling Machine is quite simply the coolest steampunk superhero book I've ever read. . . . Imagine if Gangs of New York had been directed by Jules Verne, instead of Martin Scorsese, [and] you're probably not too far off."
- Portland Book Review

"If Stan Lee had lived in the 1880s, this is the book he would have written-steampunk superheroes."
- Clay and Susan Griffith, authors of the Vampire Empire trilogy

"After the breathless beginning, the book keeps moving fast and furious, and it delivers. . . . Highly recommended for any steampunk lover."
- Fantasy Book Critic

exciting Steampunk Victorian fantasy
By A Customer
In New York, the assassination of Sir Dennis Darby on the Brooklyn Bridge by the Automaton devastated the Society of Paragons. Sir Dennis served as the groups' social compass; without his ethical leadership, the Society collapses as individuals chose self-interests over the good of the group.

Former member Sarah "the Adventuress" Stanton possesses the steel clockwork heart of her killing friend the Automaton; having hidden the mechanical beater in an obscure Brooklyn junkyard. Craving to gain favorite status from Sarah though he knows her heart is filled with revenge for the deaths of her father and mentor, Emilio vows to reconstruct the Automaton over the objection of his angry victimized sister Viola. Also needing the steel heart to complete his plans to industrialize the world under a thick blanket of smog is Lord Eschaton. His plans near fruition with the creation out of death of the Shell and the capture of Nathaniel, Eschaton must prevent the Adventuress from thwarting his scheme; while she must find a way to bring back together the Society of Paragons enhanced by reformed supervillains and still crazy mad scientists to forge the Society of Steam dream team to stop her adversary from achieving his world domination objective.

The third Society of Steam Steampunk Victorian fantasy (see Hearts of Smoke and Steam, and The Falling Machine) is an exciting tale as the frustrated beleaguered heroine wonders if she made a poor decision when she left high society to join the Paragons with vengeance now filling her heart. Readers will appreciate this entry as Fortified Steam serves as the technological base for a fast-paced alternative nineteenth century New York thriller.

Thrilling Third
By Reader
I've enjoyed the heck out of this series. Love the world, love the characters, always eager to read what happens next. I especially like that the women aren't just cardboard cutouts for the men to save or betray and then save. Men usually don't write women well, but Mayer handles the job skillfully. Nice.

Does the Pressure get to them?
By Anthony R. Cardno
I really did enjoy this final installment of Mayer's "Society of Steam" trilogy. But I didn't enjoy it as much as the previous installments.

The negatives first: to me, this story felt far more disjointed than the previous editions. In part, I'm sure this is due to the expanded size of the cast and more points-of-view to be represented, but it feels like Mayer handled the transitions much smoother in HEARTS OF SMOKE AND STEAM. I noticed this disjointed feeling especially in the second half of the book, where we shift a great deal not just in point-of-view but also in time; cliffhangers from one chapter are not resolved in the next but rather several chapters later after long periods of character-time have passed. This is a classic comic-book device and I don't begrudge Mayer using it, but there were a couple of times where the timing of events doesn't seem to line up when you go back and track the characters through these mini-flashbacks. I also don't remember Mayer using the device quite so heavily in previous books.

I also felt like there was a heavy reliance on the insanity of Lord Eschathon as a plot device. Again, a classic comic book trope, and Mayer usually plays with these tropes capably. And again the problem crops up only in the second half of the book: Eschathon's insanity feels too conveniently escalated for not-very-clearly-explained reasons in the context of the events of the story (unless I missed something other than the off-hand assumption that his earlier injuries and fortified smoke inhalation led directly to his growing insanity; if that was the only explanation, then I think I wanted a bit more detail from someone's POV as to why one led to the other). Again, I feel like Mayer made a stronger and more character-centric case for Eschaton's insanity in book two.

Now, the positives: Sarah Stanton is still a wonderfully strong character. Yes, she's at a low-point at this point in the story, but she climbs back up very well once it becomes necessary. Just like Tony Stark's original battle with alcoholism in the comic books of the 80's, we needed to see Sarah at her lowest to clearly see her through to the woman we've known she could be. Nathaniel's journey throughout the book made me feel more positively towards him than I had in either of the previous books. Both the background revelations and character growth for Anubis were welcome and really well paced out for maximum effect. I would have welcomed a bit more background detail for Emilio and Viola (building on what we got in book two) but I was happier that we got to see character progression for both of them (and rather heart-breaking progression, at that). And what really impresses me is the attention to character arcs for the secondary characters. Jenny and Grusser in particular get some strong moments in the story, and several of the secondary villains, like Jack Knife and The White Knight, get almost as much detail provided as the main characters get. (Not that it makes The White Knight any more likeable, mind you, but at least it puts his behavior in some kind of context.)

While this is my least favorite book in the trilogy, I can honestly say I'd follow Andrew Mayer back to this world in a heart-beat. Whether he chooses to move forward with the Society of Steam or move backward to tell earlier stories of The Society of Paragons (in particular, I'd love to see some adventures of Sir Dennis Darby and The Sleuth), I'll be along for the ride.

Rowing After the White Whale: A Crossing of the Indian Ocean by Hand, by James Adair

Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut' - Ernest Hemingway Over a boozy Sunday lunch, flatmates James Adair and Ben Stenning made a promise to row across the ocean. At first they considered the Pacific, then the Atlantic, but once James Cracknell and Ben Fogle completed the high-profile Atlantic Rowing Race, their thoughts turned to the Indian Ocean, longer and tougher than the Atlantic and having seen fewer people row across its waters than have walked on the Moon. After years of planning and fund raising, they were ready to launch in Spring 2011. Neither James nor Ben had any rowing or sailing experience. To add to this, James had contracted Guillain-Barre syndrome at the age of 14, which had locked his body into total paralysis for three months (while his mind had remained completely active) and which had left him with paralysed feet. This was a challenge that neither man should have ever considered.

It's alright, but.....
By CPEBach
A great topic - but not well-written at all by any stretch of the imagination. Clicheed similes and poor grammar aside, the 2-page chapters became irritating; do grown-ups need these? Some of their observations on what they see and experience verge on the infantile. Overall one learns little other than what their feelings were. A pair of very nice blokes, but one can't help feeling that their lack of planning and rowing experience rendered their trip a bit selfish: they had loved ones waiting for them at home and people would risk their lives combing the Indian Ocean for them if they disappeared. Just about worth reading but I could never bring myself to re-read. Knox-johnson's book about sailing round the world single-handed is a thousand times better. At least.

An excellent read....
By flamama
This is a well written tale of two young men who wanted an adventure and were willing to go after it....never-mind that they were completely unversed in exactly how that could be accomplished and had never done any rowing. The writer held my interest from the first page to the last with self-deprecating wit, personal insight, and talent for vivid description. It is a good read and leaves one satisfied with the knowledge that these two Brits accomplished a great deal and learned some things in the process. In a word, extremely entertaining for those of us who like adventures.

Outstanding Adventure!

This book depicts the adventure of two young men determined to achieve the adventure of their lifetime. Once you pick up this book, you cannot put it down. Along with his boating skills, the author has tremendous writing skills that keep you intrigued throughout their journey. Great job James!
