"Filled with magic, mythology and mystery, this creative story will enchant longtime fans of the series as well as newcomers. Emmy’s combination of sass and childlike behavior will resonate with young readers heading toward their preteen years." --Kirkus Reviews

About the Author
Kate Klimo has always believed that Santa Claus is the ultimate and, for many of us, the very first fantasy hero in our lives. When she was a child, she always stayed up late the night before Christmas to see if she could hear the ringing of sleigh bells or the rumble of reindeer's hooves on the roof. To this day, she thinks there is something about Christmas that's just a little bit more magical than any other day of the year.

Kate lives in New Paltz, New York, with her husband and horses. For more information, visit FoundaDragon.org and TheDragonKeepers.com.

Not Great for Santa-Believers
By Brigitte R. Haas
As always, Kate Klimo did a wonderful job in developing an exciting adventure for Jesse, Daisy, and Emmy. I was, however, a bit disappointed that she repeatedly had the characters tell Emmy that she was a big girl and should know better than to believe in Santa. My son, who loves these books, is only 8 and still a strong believer. Why shatter that innocence? Thankfully we used this book as a bedtime book instead of him reading it independently - as he normally does - so that I was able to skip over or change the words as we read.

Great Series
By B. Seemann
My ten year old son loves this series. They just updated the AR website to include this newer book. He was so glad to not only be able to read it, but take a test and get the points at school for it. He really likes dragon books, so he really enjoyed this series a lot!!!

5 year old loves it
By Alex
My five year old son loves the series (we read it to him). This installment doesn't really dispel the myth of Santa Claus as one reviewer complained - the antagonist poses as Santa but it doesn't spell out the notion that the "real" Santa didn't exist (fwiw).

Fantastic End to the Shadow Saga
By Stefan
North, the road always leads north. In the final installment of the Shadow Saga, Caim, guided by an irresistable pull, and his companions travel north in search of his mother where they will finally encounter the Lord of the Shadows.

This was the best of the series and that is high praise because I thought Shadow's Son and Shadow's Lure were very well written. I could not put this one down. The pace increased at break-neck speed to the point that the last five chapters had me breathless with anticipation.

Caim, Josey, and Kit have grown quite a bit in the series, especially in this book, and they all have to make some hard decisions. One of the things I liked most in this series was not just the fight scenes (which were very well written) but love triangle between Caim, Josey, and Kit. Josey carries his child but Kit knows and understands his darker nature. Which one will he choose? I plowed through the book wanting the answer to this question as much as I wanted to know what happened to his mother. I was very satisfied with the answer and the ending as well. I hope this is not the last we will see of Caim, Kit, and Josey.

Fans of Paul S. Kemp, Brent Weeks, and Brandon Sanderson will certainly enjoy these books.

Jon Sprunk: Master of Shadows
By Joseph P. Bonadonna
Just finished reading SHADOW'S MASTER, the third volume in Jon Sprunk's excellent trilogy. Once again, his writing is lean and mean, crisp and solid. He knows how to choreograph a fight, can write dialog that rings as true as a bell, and keep you turning the pages. Plenty of action that does not overwhelm the plot or the characters, and there's real drama and emotion in the personal lives of his characters, real pathos and tragedy. Each character is written with a sure and steady hand, we get to know them quite well. As for the three mains -- Caim, Kit and Josephine -- they're drawn with special loving care, and Jon does not disappoint or take the easy way out when he resolves this dilemma. But for me, the real hero of the story -- the real heroine -- is Josey. When first we meet her, she is a young, innocent and pampered girl. But we get to see her grow and mature into a strong woman who is as brave as she is wise. A perfect example of how a character's "arc" should be written. And while everything is neatly tied up at the end, there is a door left open for further adventures. Bravo!

Great storytelling.
By Amazon Customer
I was clicking through amazon, looking for another kindle book to buy, and came across this book on the "recommended" list. I already purchased it, but I noticed it only had a few reviews that gave it "5" stars, and no other reviews. That's not fair for the author - this book might get a few lower rated reviews, but he deserves MANY high rated reviews, and here is why:

His stories have good pacing. Action offset with dialogue and reflection, but in just the right amounts. Most decent authors have those two things (action and dialogue), which seems to be part of the craft. Well, this author has some of the "art" down also in how he mixes and paces his story, beyond just the "craft", and it makes for fun reading. I enjoyed the rhythm.

His characters were dynamic - they changed throughout the series, but the author sold me on both the original characters and the changes they endured, and where they ended. I will read more of this author's stories if he continues quality writing.

His plotlines are consistent and enjoyable. Fighting, suffering, maturing, romancing... and a lot more.

I don't write many reviews, so I'll just leave it at that. Great stuff!

Some other series I have read: Prince of Thorns, Among Thieves, Wise Man's Fear, Mistborn, Way of Kings, Riyria Revelations, Night Angel. And a lot more. This "Shadow" series fits well in the genre.

The October Country, by Ray Bradbury

Welcome to a land Ray Bradbury calls "the Undiscovered Country" of his imagination--that vast territory of ideas, concepts, notions and conceits where the stories you now hold were born. America's premier living author of short fiction, Bradbury has spent many lifetimes in this remarkable place--strolling through empty, shadow-washed fields at midnight; exploring long-forgotten rooms gathering dust behind doors bolted years ago to keep strangers locked out.. and secrets locked in. The nights are longer in this country. The cold hours of darkness move like autumn mists deeper and deeper toward winter. But the moonlight reveals great magic here--and a breathtaking vista.

The October Country is many places: a picturesque Mexican village where death is a tourist attraction; a city beneath the city where drowned lovers are silently reunited; a carnival midway where a tiny man's most cherished fantasy can be fulfilled night after night. The October Country's inhabitants live, dream, work, die--and sometimes live again--discovering, often too late, the high price of citizenship. Here a glass jar can hold memories and nightmares; a woman's newborn child can plot murder; and a man's skeleton can war against him. Here there is no escaping the dark stranger who lives upstairs...or the reaper who wields the world. Each of these stories is a wonder, imagined by an acclaimed tale-teller writing from a place shadows. But there is astonishing beauty in these shadows, born from a prose that enchants and enthralls. Ray Bradbury's The October Country is a land of metaphors that can chill like a long-after-midnight wind...as they lift the reader high above a sleeping Earth on the strange wings of Uncle Einar.

Amazon.com Review
Ray Bradbury's first short story collection is back in print, its chilling encounters with funhouse mirrors, parasitic accident-watchers, and strange poker chips intact. Both sides of Bradbury's vaunted childhood nostalgia are also on display, in the celebratory "Uncle Einar," and haunting "The Lake," the latter a fine elegy to childhood loss. This edition features a new introduction by Bradbury, an invaluable essay on writing, wherein the author tells of his "Theater of Morning Voices," and, by inference, encourages you to listen to the same murmurings in yourself. And has any writer anywhere ever made such good use of exclamation marks!?

A chill in the air
By bonsai chicken
This is a collection of nineteen classic stories (1943-1955) all under the very general theme that they take place in autumn. Most have a supernatural element, while some are more psychological, but almost all have a darker edge to them.

A lonely dwarf finds a personal use for the mirrors in a carnival funhouse, until someone makes a cruel practical joke out of it. A man becomes obsessed with the bones beneath his skin. A new mother is convinced that her child is trying to kill her. A poor family inherits a farmland and a terrible duty as well. An obstinate old woman simply refuses to die. A neurotic man fears the wind.

With all the modern horror I read I find it refreshing to pick up Mr. Bradbury's work from time to time and travel back to a quieter, simpler era, and this anthology satisfies. The stories are no less chilling for being over fifty years old. If you like tales in the vein of 'The Twilight Zone' this is just the sort of thing you will like.

This edition contains an introduction by the author in which he talks about the origins of some of the stories, and illustrations by Joe Mugnaini.

Essential Short Story Collection by an Essential Author!
By Ryan Costantino
Ray Bradbury's name is synonymous with imagination and in this collection of short stories he proves that beyond a reasonable doubt. I know, I used to cringe at his name. That is before I learned that he didn't just write science fiction (a genre of which I am not too fond). These stories range from a bizarre account of one couple's visit to a Mexican town and the mummies that reside there (The Next In Line), a loyal dog that brings its young bed-ridden owner things from out in the world, even things from cemeteries (The Emissary), a baby born with an evil intelligence (The Small Assassin), a man who is the heir to Death's job (The Scythe), and an observant boy who deals with a tenant vampire in a very unique way (The Man Upstairs). The stories I have listed are of particualr impact and my favorites of the collection, but overall word for word, page for page each story is priceless. If you are a fan of horror fiction or just plain old imaginative writing in general invest in the works of Ray Bradbury, you won't regret it.

Happy Hallowe'en!
By J. Angus Macdonald
Every year just before I reread The Homecoming. It was the first Bradbury story I ever read, way back in 5th grade, and I fell in love with it immediately. When Bradbury writes about an apple pie, in a few quick words you smell it. I love this collection, as I love Farenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, and The Illustrated Man. The stories in here range from the odd to the silly to the chilling, the kind of stories you want to tell in a tent by a flashlight on a camping trip with your old buddies. They are for the child and the terror in us all. May you all fly with Uncle Einar!

In addition, campground profiles include vital statistics about each location (fees, restrictions, operating season, amenities, contact information, driving directions and reservation information, to name a few) that help campers plan the perfect trip without unwanted surprises. GPS users will also appreciate that each campground's precise latitude and longitude waypoints are included.

Tent campers will also enjoy a detailed map of each campground included in the site profile. Making reservations online or blindly over the phone can put a camper miles from the restroom, stranded with no shade, or in the middle of a busy campground trail. Maps will help campers avoid those pitfalls, and wherever possible the author has even recommended specific campsites for maximum privacy, spaciousness, or beauty.

From the Inside Flap

From Lake Ontario to the Atlantic Ocean, from the Adirondacks to the Catskills, pitching a tent in New York opens the door to endless adventure. And you’re never far from one of the myriad forests and waterways that make the state a camper’s paradise.

In Best Tent Camping: New York State, outdoors writers and enthusiasts Aaron, Cate, and Timothy Starmer have complied everything you need to know to find the safe and scenic treasure spot that’s just right for you.

About the Author
Aaron Starmer is a freelance writer and editor specializing in children's novels and travel guides. His far-flung adventures inform much of his writing and include chasing down leopards in Kenya's Maasai Mara, rafting through the Grand Canyon, crossing mountain passes in New Zealand's Fiordland National Park, tripping over iguanas in the Galapagos Islands, and swimming beneath waterfalls in Tahiti. When closer to home, he takes every opportunity to explore the mountains, lakes, and rivers of New York, New Jersey, and New England. He lives in Hoboken, New Jersey with his wife Cate.

Cate Starmer has reviewed New York City restaurants, written a guidebook to camping, edited dozens of non-fiction books, and produced a daily-updated travel blog. She received a dual degree BS in marketing and tv-radio-film from Newhouse School at Syracuse University and a certificate in Editing from New York University's School of Continuing and Professional Studies. Whether it's horseback riding in the Colombian jungle, running the NYC marathon, or trekking to a backcountry hut in winter, she is always up for a new challenge--especially if it involves an adventure that can be turned into a story.

Timothy Starmer has always been an outdoor enthusiast and spent most of his childhood seeking out remote and wild areas whenever possible. During a brief hiatus from Brown University during 1997, he drove across the United States for six weeks, camping the entire way. Along the way he explored many of the West's national and state parks, including Canyonlands, Yellowstone, Arches, Bryce Canyon. At the trip's conclusion, he headed down to Australia, where he backpacked for a few months exploring the eastern Outback, the Great Barrier Reef, and the caves of Tasmania, as well as traversing the Tasmanian World Heritage Area along the Overland Track. Tim currently works in upstate New York as a timber framer and can still be found exploring the wilds whenever possible.

At the southern end of the Catskills, in the Sundown Wild Forest, lies the Peekamoose Valley, where 2,000-foot peaks—Samson, Van Wyck, and Peekamoose Mountains—funnel water into Rondout Creek through a series of picturesque waterfalls. In the midst of all of this is a campground that, while administered by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), is decidedly different than any of the Catskill's other offerings. If you're looking for a place to pitch your tent that's somewhere between backcountry camping and primitive but established properties like Devil's Tombstone (see page 28), then you'll find this is your sweet spot (or sweet 25 spots, to more exact).

The campground is stretched out over a mile and is made up of three separate fields, each containing 6 to 9 walk-in sites. (There's also a trailer field that requires permits; contact the DEC for more information on that area.) There's no running water, no trash pickup, no picnic tables, and only seasonal port-a-potties at the parking lots. But it's all free-of-charge on a first-come-first-served basis, and the sites are large, flat, shady, and private. From nearly every corner of the campground, you can hear the sound of the trickling Rondout Creek.

With the exception of two group sites and two accessible sites, each other one is limited to nine people and three tents. Part of the fun is exploring the winding paths to discover the best available spot for you. Be careful to select a site with a designated camping sign, as the DEC occasionally rotates locations to spread out the impact of campers. Admittedly, some of the former sites can be very tempting. And don't let the name "field" fool you; only a few sites are actually in fields. Most are nicely wooded options with ample of vegetation.

Approaching from the northeast along Peekamoose Road/County Route 42, the first area after the trailer field is the upper field with its two parking lots. Closest to the eastern lot, sites 1 and 2 sit across from the trailer field along a dry creek bed (or at least it's been dry when we have visited). Sites 3 and 5 are closer to the road, but are nicely situated among spruce trees on the opposite side of the field's well-worn main trail. Numbers 4 and 8 are even closer to the trail, while 6 and 7 are tucked away on little spurs near the western parking lot.

Further along Peekamoose Road, toward Sundown, the middle field features six sites and one small parking lot. While sites 1 and 2 (set off to the right of the lot) are both close to the creek, they are also somewhat close from the road. Still, they're a better choice than site 3, which is within spitting distance of the lot. We prefer sites 4 and 5 for their privacy and their soft, sandy perches next to the creek (and a nice little swimming hole), and site 6 for its grassy seclusion near an open field. As in other parts of the campground, small dry creek beds (some used as default trails) criss-cross near most of the sites, so be wary during periods of heavy rain.

The lower field, not much further down the road, houses nine sites. The sites are nicely spread and, thanks to their distance from the large parking lot and their location across an old bridge, they tend to be the quietest choices. From the lot, walk down a hill, cross the bridge to the information kiosk, and you will find sites 1 to 6 to the right and sites 7 to 9 are to the left. For the most privacy, check out site 1. About a quarter a mile removed from the rest of the sites past an old stone wall, it's remote and woodsy enough for the greatest of recluses. Site 3 is not far from the edge of the creek. While numbers 2, 4, 5 (the largest), and 6 are all scattered along the edge of a tall grass field bordering a steep hill thick with fir trees that cast shade upon the sites. Number 7 sits just past the information kiosk, while 8 and 9 (always good choices) are closer to the creek and are often home to some interesting art created with stones worn smooth by the water.

Because there are no reservations, you could show up and find the campground already full. On the plus side, impromptu getaways can be rewarded with free streamside campsites and absolutely no paperwork. Still, summer weekends fill up fast so don't arrive after dark on a Friday evening and expect luck to be on your side. Local DEC rangers do occasionally patrol, but rules, especially quiet hours, are treated differently by all. Be wary of rowdy parties, especially on holiday weekends. Previous tenants may leave presents for you, ranging from trash bags to well-stacked stone cairns. Just because there's no staff on-site, be sure to leave Peekamoose as you would like to find it.

Nearby in the Peekmoose Valley, you'll find a stunning swimming hole, lots of accessible waterfalls, and a variety of hiking options. Across the road from the upper field's eastern lot, a large boulder marks the trailhead to Bengle Hill and Vernooy Kill Falls, and just east along Peekamoose Road is the Peekamoose-Table Trail, a strenuous hike that rewards with a great views. For an easier route to views, drive to the nearby town of Denning for 1.2 mile hike to Red Hill Fire Tower. After all that climbing and sweating, be sure to cool off with a trip to the famous Blue Hole, a legendary swimming hole just 2 miles east along Peekamoose Road. It's chilly even in the peak of summer, but don't let that stop you from taking a memorable leap into the crystal clear water.

So good I bought it twice.
By Sean King
This is a great book. As the title says, it is specifically for tent camping in New York State. A tent camper knows that campgrounds are often more geared towards RVs than tents. A tent camper also knows there is a wide variety of tent camping styles. Car campers, hike-in campers, family camping, campers who like hiking, water sports, all have slightly different needs.

The authors have carefully reviewed all the campgrounds listed, and give great detailed descriptions. How modern or rustic the facilities are, how well maintained the place is, how private or open sites are, etc. They give you a good idea of which sites are better for car camping and which are better for hike-in camping, which are more private, which have better views, etc. They even call out the few bad "to be avoided" campsites in otherwise good campgrounds.

They do such a good job that I had to get the second edition when they updated the book. Again, great book.

Great reference for tent campers in NY!
By C. Relyea
I checked this book out of the library 5 times and then decided to buy my own copy! We have been to a few of the campgrounds and particular campsites that the authors mention and very much agree with their recommendations. This is a great book for tent campers that enjoy the quiet, rustic areas.

The Secrets of Triangles: A Mathematical Journey, by Alfred S. Posamentier, Ingmar Lehmann

Requiring no more than a knowledge of high school mathematics and written in clear and accessible language, this book will give all readers a new insight into some of the most enjoyable and fascinating aspects of geometry. Everyone knows what a triangle is, yet very few people appreciate that the common three-sided figure holds many intriguing "secrets." For example, if a circle is inscribed in any random triangle and then three lines are drawn from the three points of tangency to the opposite vertices of the triangle, these lines will always meet at a common point-no matter what the shape of the triangle. This and many more interesting geometrical properties are revealed in this entertaining and illuminating book about geometry. Flying in the face of the common impression that mathematics is usually dry and intimidating, this book proves that this sometimes-daunting, abstract discipline can be both fun and intellectually stimulating. The authors, two veteran math educators, explore the multitude of surprising relationships connected with triangles and show some clever approaches to constructing triangles using a straightedge and a compass. Readers will learn how they can improve their problem-solving skills by performing these triangle constructions. The lines, points, and circles related to triangles harbor countless surprising relationships that are presented here in a very engaging fashion.

"A fascinating look at the geometrical. While this may not be a 'read on the beach' novel, it would prove to be an indispensible classroom companion for those wading into the fascinating subject for the first time."
- Astro Guyz

"A joyously nerdy celebration of the history of geometry and trigonometry, exploring the dozens and dozens of curiosities sitting just beneath the surface of a seemingly ordinary triangle…. By no means a casual read, The Secrets of Triangles is nonetheless worth a look, if only to blow your mind."
- Sacramento/San Francisco Book Review

"Any science or math holding, especially those catering to lay readers, will find this a winner!"

A valuable contribution to the literature of mathematics
By Gerry
Alfred Posamentier, mostly with co-author Ingmar Lehmann, has written books about pi, the golden ratio, the Pythagorean theorem and Fibonacci numbers. Now these two authors have outdone themselves. The Secrets of Triangles: A Mathematical Journey (Prometheus) provides the reader with far deeper insights into concepts related to triangles than does the usual school or even college course.

But this is also a book accessible to the interested general reader requiring no more than a reasonable background in school algebra and geometry.

In addition to familiar topics like centroids, nine point circles and Euler lines, we meet pedal triangles; Gergonne, Fermat, Brocard, Miguel and Nagel points; and Ptolemy's, Menelaus's, Napoleon;s, Simpson's and Morley's theorems. There is a useful chapter on constructions and an interesting extension to fractals that includes the Sierpinski triangle and the chaos game.

The omission of projective geometry from this text I consider appropriate and my sole concern is that the authors have not included any of the nice applications of transformation geometry to the study of triangles.

The figures in this book are one of its best features. Today much of that art can be duplicated and generalized by readers through the use of computer-based programs like Geometer's Sketchpad, Cinderella and GeoGebra.

One of the best uses of this book will be by school classroom teachers of geometry but it also provides an excess of pleasure for the general reader.

Good and interesting Content, poor physical quality of the book (hard cover).
By Amazon Customer
The contents of the book are interesting and the explanations are mostly easy to follow, recommended for anybody with general interest in the properties of Triangles and geometry as such. Although I have to say that some of the print in the figures is really rather small and a larger size of book would general be more suitable for geometry texts.

A request/ to the authors: I have recently come across the book "A treatise on the Circle and the Sphere" by J.L. Coolidge (1916). A real treasure trove (and obviously a step up in level). It is however very difficult to follow the text because of a real lack of figures. Apart from the triangle, the circle and sphere are the other shapes that everybody can relate to and which have many amazing properties and uses. (Although circles are encountered in The Secrets of Triangles, they are only used in connection to the Triangle geometry.) It would be a real challenge to produce a modernized version of Coolidge's great text, now exactly 100 years old. I'd sign up in advance for a copy!

The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 stars is the physical quality of the book that I received. It looked fine upon receipt but after two (!!) days the front cover simply tore apart while I was holding the book in my hands. No overstretching or overfolding, it just started to make a funny noise and halve the front cover (hard cover!) separated from the rest. Shame on you Prometheus!
I also happen to have the authors' books on Pi and the Golden Ratio, also hard covers from Prometheus and these are fine after several months and frequent reading. Maybe I just got a bad specimen this time.. I live too far away to bother with return/replacement.

In 2009, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released the report Warfighter Support: Independent Expert Assessment of Army Body Armor Test Results and Procedures Needed Before Fielding, which commented on the conduct of the test procedures governing acceptance of body armor vest-plate inserts worn by military service members. This GAO report, as well as other observations, led the Department of Defense Director, Operational Test & Evaluation, to request that the National Research Council (NRC) Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences conduct a three-phase study to investigate issues related to the testing of body armor materials for use by the U.S. Army and other military departments. Phase I and II resulted in two NRC letter reports: one in 2009 and one in 2010. This report is Phase III in the study.

Testing of Body Armor Materials: Phase III provides a roadmap to reduce the variability of clay processes and shows how to migrate from clay to future solutions, as well as considers the use of statistics to permit a more scientific determination of sample sizes to be used in body armor testing. This report also develops ideas for revising or replacing the Prather study methodology, as well as reviews comments on methodologies and technical approaches to military helmet testing. Testing of Body Armor Materials: Phase III also considers the possibility of combining various national body armor testing standards.

Cuttlefish, by Dave Freer

The smallest thing can change the path of history.

The year is 1976, and the British Empire still spans the globe. Coal drives the world, and the smog of it hangs thick over the canals of London.

Clara Calland is on the run. Hunted, along with her scientist mother, by Menshevik spies and Imperial soldiers, they flee Ireland for London. They must escape airships, treachery and capture. Under flooded London's canals they join the rebels who live in the dank tunnels there.

Tim Barnabas is one of the under people, born to the secret town of drowned London, place of anti-imperialist republicans and Irish rebels, part of the Liberty - the people who would see a return to older values and free elections. Seeing no further than his next meal, Tim has hired on as a submariner on the Cuttlefish, a coal fired submarine that runs smuggled cargoes beneath the steamship patrols, to the fortress America and beyond.

When the ravening Imperial soldiery comes, Clara and her mother are forced to flee aboard the Cuttlefish. Hunted like beasts, the submarine and her crew must undertake a desperate voyage across the world, from the Faeroes to the Caribbean and finally across the Pacific to find safety. But only Clara and Tim Barnabas can steer them past treachery and disaster, to freedom in Westralia. Carried with them--a lost scientific secret that threatens the very heart of Imperial power.

About the Author
Dave Freer is an ichthyologist-turned-author living on Flinders Island, in the middle of the Bass Strait (between Australia and Tasmania), with his wife and chief proofreader, Barbara; four dogs and four cats; and two sons, Paddy and James. His first book—The Forlorn (Baen)—came out in 1999. Since then he has coauthored with Eric Flint (Rats, Bats and Vats, The Rats, the Bats and the Ugly, Pyramid Scheme, and Pyramid Power) and with Mercedes Lackey and Eric Flint (The Shadow of the Lion, This Rough Magic, The Wizard of Karres, Much Fall of Blood) as well as writing the solo novels A Mankind Witch and Dragon's Ring, and various shorter works. When does Cuttlefish II come out?
By PCKing
The best science fiction is based on believable technology.

David Freer has created an alternate history based on believable environmental events. There's a little Jules Verne in the story of the Cuttlefish.

A coal fired submarine that sails on hydrofoils and outwits the British Empire. It works for me.

It's a good read. I'm looking forward to the next book.

A great read for any age
By Amber M Goss
I enjoyed some of Freer's adult works, so I was interested in reading what he had to give to the YA market. To say I was impressed is an immense understatement. The characters were complex without being overblown and relationships grew organically out of the shared experiences and obstacles that were faced. Mr Freer did an amazing job and I can't recommend this book enough.

Alternate History & Science Fiction: Absolutely Astonishing!
By Lovey Dovey Books
Dave Freer's Cuttlefish is absolutely astonishing! It's 1953 and the world is severely altered by the effects of the Melt. Parts of London are underwater, where old tunnels are inhabited by the Underpeople, and the western part of Australia is dry and sandy. The novel will entertain readers of all ages with it's underwater adventure, humor, and intriguing alternate history. The friendships forged over the course of the novel will no doubt extend to the readers who won't help but become fascinated by the variety of characters and backgrounds.

Clara Calland, the bookish outcast of St. Margaret's School for the Children of Officers and Gentleman, embarks on a terrifying journey that takes her and her mother, Dr. Calland, from Ireland to the dry country of Westralia. She finds a place with the crew of an illegal submarine, learning navigation and doing certain chores as if she were a cabin boy herself. While aboard the Cuttlefish, Clara becomes fast friends with cabin boy, Tim Barnabas. Tim grew up in London's underwater tunnels, taking on a submariner job at the urging of his mother so that he would always have food. He proves to be brave, trustworthy to Clara and his superiors and an excellent submariner. Freer takes a very interesting turn when it comes to this character. Tim is persecuted and called "darkie" because of his mixed heritage. Though he was born in London, his father came from Jamaica and the fact that Tim is darker than the other crew members causes a few incidents of racism and prejudice. Tim's character and his friendship with Clara is another layer added to Cuttlefish's deeply layered plot.

Tim and Clara's friendship is the most steadily constant during a tremulous time. Clara and Dr. Calland are stuck in a cat and mouse game, running from the Mensheviks and the British Imperial Intelligence, headed by Duke Malcolm. Yet, here are these two young teens who hardly panic in stressful situations and both cherish their growing relationship. Clara stands up for Tim when he's wrongly accused of thievery, and Tim backs up Clara in whatever crazy plots she comes up with. Cuttlefish is exciting for all the action and suspense, and even more so for the blend of steampunk, historical fiction, and science fiction elements. Pick up a copy of Cuttlefish and you won't put it down until the last page is read!

Philosophy of life
By J.I.B.L.L.
I have given this book to many people that I care about. It reflects a positive philosophy of life. It reflects the life cycle and gives direction when things go wrong. Everyone to whom I have given it
would like to survive when things inevitably go wrong. Everyone has "bumps in the road" during their lives. They remember the little Golden Books that they have read throughout their childhoods and would like to recapture the positive feelings that Golden Books evoke. I would recommend this book to those readers that would like to life with as positive an attitude as possible. JIBLL

Delightful!
By Karen Bayer
This book pays tribute to Little Golden Books of the past. Reading it and, most especially, seeing the full page illustrations was a trip down memory lane. Diane Muldrow has pulled together some of the best of the LGB library and added little bits of wisdom and humor in each page. If you remember these books from childhood you will bring back memories. If not, you will get a fresh, new look at what generations of readers have enjoyed. A lovely book for sharing and very reasonably priced.

Really cute book!
By Hey Jude
I bought this as a birthday gift for a friend about my age (we're in our 60's). She got such a kick out of it, because of course, we read the Little Golden Books when we were kids. The illustrations are really cute and the texts written to go with them are very clever. I highly recommend this little book for yourself or a friend.

Murder at the Supreme Court: Lethal Crimes and Landmark Cases, by Martin Clancy, Tim O'Brien

This in-depth yet highly accessible books provides compelling human stories that illuminate the thorny legal issues behind the most noteworthy capital cases. In 1969, the Supreme Court justices cast votes in secret that could have signaled the end of the death penalty. Later, the justices’ resolve began to unravel. Why? What were the consequences for the rule of law and for the life at stake in the case? These are some of the fascinating questions answered in Murder at the Supreme Court. Veteran journalists Martin Clancy and Tim O’Brien not only pull back the curtain of secrecy that surrounds Supreme Court deliberations but also reveal the crucial links between landmark capital-punishment cases and the lethal crimes at their root. The authors take readers to crime scenes, holding cells, jury rooms, autopsy suites, and execution chambers to provide true-life reporting on vicious criminals and the haphazard judicial system that punishes them. The cases reported are truly "the cases that made the law." They have defined the parameters that judges must follow for a death sentence to stand up on appeal. Beyond the obvious questions regarding the dubious deterrent effect of capital punishment or whether retribution is sufficient justification for the death penalty (regardless of the heinous nature of the crimes committed), the cases and crimes examined in this book raise other confounding issues: Is lethal injection really more humane than other methods of execution? Should a mentally ill killer be forcibly medicated to make him "well enough" to be executed? How does the race of the perpetrator or the victim influence sentencing? Is heinous rape a capital crime? How young is too young to be executed?

"This book takes the smoke screen out of the capital-punishment debate and dishes out the realities: the challenges to judges and lawmakers posed by awful crimes, competing pressures on the scale of justice, and the role of victims in determining punishment. Save Your Money
By M. Stephens
To say that this book is a major disappointment is something of an understatement. As an attorney, I was looking forward to a reasonably intelligible description of how the Supreme Court has responded to death penalty cases over time, why its jurisprudence has developed in the manner it has, and what the actual facts of the underlying cases had (or didn't have) to do with how that body of law developed. What I got instead was a disjointed, unfocused, poorly written and inadequately edited, essay which is anything but thought provoking or genuinely educational.
The facts associated with individual cases are presented almost in isolation, without any real effort to suggest why they did or didn't influence the court or individual justices in characterizing and deciding those cases as they did. The writing is hackneyed -- e.g., "now it was time to call in the cavalry;" "[t]he flame had been lit by two men no longer in the building" (p. 38); the Justice Department "also had a horse in this race" (p. 47) -- and replete with fawning and irrelevant detail. For instance, we are told that in 1963 Arthur Goldberg presented to his colleagues a memorandum urging abolition of the death penalty on Eighth Amendment grounds. Instead of quoting that memorandum, summarizing its arguments, or suggesting why it failed to garner three other votes for accepting a case which presented that issue, however, we are informed that it was drafted by Goldberg's "then twenty-four-year-old clerk, Alan Dershowitz . . . a Brooklyn-born legal prodigy who had been first in his class at Yale Law School." With all due respect, that isn't the kind of information I was looking for when I bought this book.

MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND
By joe rooms Author of PRINCE OF THE WILD FRONTIER
With a young woman In an Arizona prison awaiting the ultimate consequences of being convicted for a murder that was more brutal than imaginable, and a "loser nephew" in a Boston prison accused of terrorism, could there be a more timely book than

"Murder At The Supreme Court"?

There was only one sentence in the entire book I wish they would have edited out. In "closing Arguments", the authors apologize if seeming to advocate for the death penalty. I never got that impression anywhere in the book. Not even close.

On a personal note, I have opposed capital punishment since I was a child. A major influence was listening to my hero:Clinton T Duffy on t.v. Mr. Duffy was the long time warden of San Quentin prison. When I saw that these writers cited this

great man, I was confident that they would be reporting with authority, and they did. Their account of landmark cases at the Supreme Court was comprehensive and, I thought without prejudice. I felt that the stories in "MATSC" achieved a perfect

balance of victims and their families and perpetrators and their families. I think the authors intended for their book to more educational than inspirational i.e, "Just the facts, Ma'am". "MATSC' disciplines itself to provide us a clinical analysis of a

controversial subject Having said that, it would be next to impossible to explore such a volatile topic without emotion being a factor.

I have tried my hardest to focus on reviewing the book, and not pontificating on my own beliefs regarding capital crimes and punishment. I do find it pertinent, though, to mention that "MATSC" did not change my stance on the matter. What It did

do,though, was remind me to have empathy for the victims of these killers. I do.

For those reviewers who were stingy with their stars,(one gentleman didn't even read the book. Another had previously given one star to a thermometer) I posit that they misread AT for IN in the title, and expected to read Margaret Truman's

fine novel. May I suggest?, if you are still in a quandary about your position, and need more info than "MATSC" was able to provide you, see the movies :The Thin Blue Line & Henry, Portrait Of A Serial Killer, and read the books: Stranger Beside Me & Actual Innocence,

and then read Murder At The Supreme Court by Martin Clancy and Tim O'brien, again! p.s. Make sure to take advantage of the websites they direct you to. There are videos and transcripts of actual cases. A bonus feature I've not seen in the main text of a book

A Clear & Absorbing Account of Landmark Cases Affecting the Death Penalty
By R. Schultz
This book is a lucid account of some of the cases that shaped our Country's approach to administering the death penalty. Each chapter starts with a description of the crime and criminal whose case then prompted a Supreme Court decision.

While the authors ultimately do express their opinion about the efficacy of the death penalty, they never appear to be biased or dogmatic in their presentation. They summarize the Supreme Court Judges' differing views in an even-handed way. The authors achieve their stated goal: To provoke & inform readers' personal decision regarding capital punishment.

Some of the cases they review involve questions of:

XX Which methods of execution (if any) would pass the Bill of Rights' "no cruel or unusual punishment" test. (As accompaniment to these sections, you might want to check out Mr. Death: The Rise & Fall of Fred A. Leuchter Jr., the account of one man's attempt to build a better electric chair);

XX Whether accomplices to a deadly crime are as culpable as the actual triggermen;

XX How extensive is a convicted individual's right to appeal and review - and how should 11th hour "new evidence" claims of innocence be handled;

XX What should constitute the "aggravating circumstances" that might elevate a crime to qualify for the death penalty;

XX How much have issues of race disproportionately landed members of minority groups on Death row, and more interestingly, how much has the race of the victims' of crime disproportionately affected the severity of the sentences handed down;

XX Should the impact statements of surviving family members be allowed to influence the severity of punishment meted out to a perpetrator;

XX What cut-off points can be established to qualify juveniles and low-IQ individuals for capital punishment? (Note Justice Scalia's thought-provoking retorts in this regard);

The authors generally only consider cases accepted for review by the Supreme Court from 1970-the present. For example, not included here are earlier cause celebres, such as the Caryl Chessman case, that raised constitutional questions along the way. Chessman qualified for a death sentence (which was ultimately carried out) because the crimes he was convicted of violated "The Little Lindbergh Law." This law allowed the death penalty if any bodily harm (even harm well short of murder) occurred in the course of a kidnapping. Chessman's rape crimes qualified as "kidnappings" because he dragged several of his victims a number of feet out of their cars. (However, that wasn't the basis on which Chessman's case was ultimately brought to the Supreme Court for review. His case was reviewed by the highest Court on the more mundane basis of a permanently lost trial transcript.)

However this book, while not specifically going as far back as Chessman, does recount several cases that raised issues of "proportionality." Can any State apply the death penalty for a crime that didn't itself result in death? Or does the law have to stick to "an eye for an eye" parity? Should the death penalty be applied in cases in which a minor was raped, but not killed? More recent supreme court cases produced some interesting rationales on both sides of that question.

This book gives clear insights into the kinds of reasoning that the judges applied when they considered their cases. There's a lot you'll likely learn about the logic of the law and more general philosophy here. The authors also give readers some rare behind-the-scenes views into the Judges' Friday conferences where they privately consider which cases to review, and how to frame the presentations.

I also found this book to be much more revealing and informative about the manner of Supreme Court deliberations than many other books I've read that attempted inclusive accounts of the Court's history. Seeing the Court's operations through this narrower lens of how the death penalty has been addressed - gives the reader more focus. It's like walking into a huge museum and trying to take in EVERYTHING versus walking in with a few specific questions you'll look to have answered. The latter approach often, paradoxically, ends in giving you the more informed overview. That's what happens here where you review the Supreme Court's operations through the narrower lens of how it has considered issues relating to the death penalty.

The authors issue a warning at the beginning of the book regarding the graphic nature of their accounts of some of the crimes and some of the photographs. Actually though, I don't think that warning should necessarily limit high school student's access to this book, nor should it dissuade more sensitive readers from reading it. Most of the photos are portraits of the various Judges or the perpetrators. When a crime scene photo is included, it is usually too grainy to be disturbing. The accounts of the crimes themselves are no more distressing than what's presented on the average CSI TV show.

So almost everyone capable of reading this book would likely profit from its review of a range of important, compelling legal issues. There are also scan-able bar codes throughout the book, leading you to online sources of more information.
