INTRODUCING A NEW LINE OF CAROLYN HART CLASSICS, each with a new introduction by the author!
Leah Devereaux is a dead woman. At least, that's what the folks now running the Devereaux plantation tell her: Leah has been presumed dead for nineteen years--since the day that both her parents died.
Leah, very much alive, has returned to South Carolina to uncover the untold story of her parents' deaths. While some, like her cousin Merrick, welcome her, Cissy and John Edward tell her to stay away, tell her to stop meddling in secrets long kept.
When a ghost known only as the Whispering Lady appears once again at the Devereaux plantation after years of absence, the locals know it's an omen of death. Merrick and Leah may be the next targets. . . .

Review
"Hart fans will appreciate what were later to become the author's signature elements: the Lowcountry setting, the vivid physical description, and surprising twists." - Publishers Weekly
"Verdict: Turn up your gothic-romantic suspense meter for this spooky Low Country treat. Hart's 1986 standalone has enough espionage and intrigue to keep readers guessing. Recommend this quick read to those longing for the old-fashioned romantic suspense novels of Phyllis Whitney or Victoria Holt." - Library Journal
"Faulkner's well-known line 'The past is never dead. It's not even past' could have been written for Carolyn Hart's The Devereaux Legacy. A romance? A ghost story? A mystery? The novel is all three and more, as heroine Leah Devereaux sifts through dark family secrets seeking to find out who she really is! Once again Hart displays her impressive versatility as a writer." - Katherine Hall Page, author of the Faith Fairchild Mystery series
"A splendid mix of bone-chilling suspense, long-buried secrets, and ghostly hauntings. Add a tender romance set against the backdrop of a South Carolina plantation, and you have a masterpiece." - Mary Kennedy, author of The Talk Radio Mysteries
"Mysteries in the past and the present haunt a young woman in this fun read for the fan of romantic suspense." - JoAnna Carl, author of the Chocoholic Mystery series

A Carolyn Hart Classic
By Mary Kennedy
I am so glad that Seventh Street books reissued this book along with other "Carolyn Hart classics." It's a splendid mix of bone-chilling suspense, long-buried secrets and ghostly hauntings. Add a tender romance set against the backdrop of a South Carolina plantation, and you have a masterpiece. The release date for the new edition of this book is February 13 and Seventh Street is also doing a new release of another Carolyn Hart classic, SKULDUGGERY. Mystery writing at its finest from "America's Agatha Christie."

The Devereaux Legacy

In Rockport, Texas, Leah Devereaux Shaw buries her beloved grandma Louisa Abbot Shaw, the woman who raised her. However, Grandmother Shaw's last letter and a much read magazine article stuns Leah who travels to Mefford, South Carolina where apparently her kin live. Her first stop in Mefford is the cemetery, which contains stones for her grandma, her parents and two years old Leah; all "lost at sea" when the New Star went down.
Leah heads to the family plantation that her grandma accompanied by baby Leah fled almost two decades ago. Her arrival is met by mixed emotions. Cousin Merrick Devereaux welcomes her; an extended family in-law Mrs. Leclerc warns her that the return of the Whispering Lady means death; cousins Cissy and John Edward Devereaux tell her to return to Texas or else; and her maternal grandmother Carrie Devereaux is stunned with a second chance to atone for her pride driving away her daughter in the 1960s. With a need to know why kind-hearted Grandmother Shaw vanished with her, Leah investigates while also attracted to Merrick.
This reprint of a 1986 Carolyn Hart romantic amateur sleuth is an entertaining tale that brings to life the author's trademark Lowcountry setting (see the Death on Demand series). The cast is solid and the twists inside a taut suspense storyline plausible. Although the romance between the "kissing cousins" feels forced while supporting Ms. Hart's Introduction's contention on female mystery writing in the Reagan era, readers will enjoy this engaging "cold case" murder mystery.
