From Publishers Weekly
Sprunk's debut novel, filled with the clichés and conventions of heroic fantasy, is amateur in its originality. Caim is an assassin with a tragic and slightly mysterious background. Othir is Caim's adopted city, a city populated entirely by villains and victims. Betrayed by his colleagues, Caim is left with Josephine, the daughter of the man who was to be Caim's next victim, as an unwilling ally against hosts of conniving religious fanatics, conspirators, and evil rival assassins. Sprunk's prose is leaden and riddled with lumps of tedious exposition, his characters are prototypes of the genre, and even his setting is the usual sort of degenerate, decaying imperial city-with no attempt to distinguish his version of this established trope. The result is a journey through a tired plot, with nothing particular to reward the reader for the time invested.

From Booklist
Like many other assassin characters, Caim is an orphan. But he has a ghostlike companion, Kit, whom only he can hear and see, and an uncanny ability to manipulate shadows. Set in a kingdom where the religious are not so holy and the nobility are corrupt, Caim has no loyalties and few scruples. He reluctantly accepts a contract to assassinate a nobleman, only to find that someone else got there first. He and the nobleman's daughter, Josey, become an unlikely pair in the search for her father's killers and the people who set up Caim. The intrigue, action scenes, and ever-more-revealing character insights are masterfully woven together in a book the reader won't want to put down. Questions about the origin of Caim's shadow sorcery and Kit's identity are broadly touched upon but never fully revealed, leaving readers to wonder if there will be another book to tie up the loose pieces. Overall, a first-rate sword-and-sorcery tale, with intriguing characters, that moves at a quick pace. --Rebecca Gerber

Endearing characters i will meet again
By Brian D. Rogers
I love assassin books so Caim is my kind of character. The book as it moves along developed at a cinematic pace. Both Josey and Kit give our experienced knife wielder a fresh and fun supporting cast. Great villains that take the story and move it along brilliantly. Book two, here I come!

Shadow's Son
By Roland
In my own private world the assassin with a heart of gold is almost as big a cliche as the similarly-inclined whore, and perhaps even more annoying than the poor wench. I have never been able to understand some people's infatuation with ruthless killers that end up saving the day while being very mean and bad-ass about it. Somehow it always rings false to me. However, I have a soft spot for newcomers, and so I decided to acquaint myself with Jon Sprunk and his debut novel, Shadow's Son.

Caim is an assassin with an appropriately tortured past, plying his trade in the corrupt city of Othir - capital of the Nemean Empire, ruled by the Church of the True Faith, after a coup that disposed of the last Emperor seventeen years ago. When a routinely-looking job goes wrong, and people begin to die left and right (that is, without Caim's help), he becomes entangled in the intrigues and ambitions of the nobility and the Church. His only allies are Kit - a mysterious spirit woman that only he could see and hear, who has been his companion since early childhood - and Josephine, daughter of his last target. Now the assassin has to fight not only for his life, but also for the girl he has been tied to, and the city he secretly loves. But to stay alive, Caim might be forced to call upon a power hidden deep inside him - one that he has spent his entire life trying to deny. The power of shadows.

Shadow's Son is a fast-paced action ride. Like most assassin fantasy novels out there, it could easily be put under the Young Adult flag, if it wasn't for the blood, gore and violence factor. The characters are clich... archetypes, their motivations simple and clearly stated in POVs and dalogues. The story is straightforward, and even though the plot is intrigues-ridden, it all really boils down to who is going to murder whom first. Sprunk's style of writing drags a little at the beginning, but the book soon finds its stride and becomes engrossing page-turner. The action scenes (mostly duels with swords and knives) are good, even if they couldn't compare to Scott Bakker's flowing descriptions or David Gemmell's dynamic sequences. However, as someone who has had the dubious honor of translating Richard A. Knaak' s game tie-ins in another language, I think I am qualified enough to say that Jon Sprunk's fighting scenes are among the more successful in the genre.

Where he fails though, is the world-building and history of his world. Although only a part of a series, Shadow's Son should have been able to give way more flesh to the setting, and to some recent events. We get no real feeling of the Empire, and even though certain on-going wars and exotic neighbors are mentioned, they never appear a second time and the reader is left hanging. Even Othir herself gives the impression of being comprised of one poor street, one rich street, a half-finished cathedral, an Evil Castle and Another Evil Castle. Nothing like the fleshed-out Luthadel from Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn, or Scott Lynch's Camorr from The Lies of Locke Lamora. The real threat to the Empire is also just vaguely shown - the supernatural Shadow and its servants from the Other Side seem really interesting - but I guess it will play a bigger role in next installments. Then we have the Evil Chirch of Evil, which oppresses everyone and is at the root of all the characters' dramas EVER, but we never learn anything about the regime it replaces (supposedly it wasn't better), or even what the Chirch's dogmas are, beside the fact that it is pseudo-Christian and very corrupt. And we really should have more information, considering how crucial it is to the plot.

In the end, those are not book-ruiners though. True, Shadow's Son lacks depth of world and history, but it more than compensates with non-stop action and an Evil Conspiracy plot (if a bit simplistic one) of the type that makes you devour every page until you reach the inevitable convergence. I have to admit that Jon Sprunk's fascination with sodomy struck me as curiously morbid (or, as Kruppe would suggest, morbidly curious) - as I consider it a really strange city guard, whose members' first instinct when they catch an adolescent thief is to try and rape him - but that is not a book-ruiner either.

What ruined the book for me, was one scene toward the end, where Sprunk crossed the border between violent-but-simple-and-entertaining-assassin-fantasy, and unsettlingly-disgusting-and-"gritty"-showing-the-ugliness-of-the-world. I'm talking full on Terry Goodkind disgusting. I won't spoil the "fun" for anyone. Suffice to say I don't consider myself a prude, and in the right book this kind of development would be perfectly fine with me. Shadow's Son just isn't the right book for it. And I simply didn't like it as much after this scene.

That said, Jon Sprunk's first novel is engaging and light read, and one that leaves you wanting more. I don't expect that Shadow's Son will be among the best debuts I've read this year, but I will definitely read the sequel, when it's out. The author has undeniable potential, and if he develops his world and gives it a few historical layers - and if he could also refrain from gratuitous "grittiness" - this could turn out to be a truly great series.

7/10

P.S. There is a whore with a heart of gold in Shadow's Son. True story.

An Uneven Tale About Getting Even (Spoiler Free Review)
By Poisoned Blade
Shadow's Son is a short tale of revenge, romance, and action with some good scenes and some awkward ones loosely connected by clichés. Although the story is pretty good, it feels flat because the characters don't really have any ambition and just do what they are supposed to do. I'll try and explain what went wrong...

Story:
The story begins with Caim preparing to assassinate a perverted, gluttonous, black hearted, greedy, wicked, cruel nobleman from the rafters of his palace. Accompanying Caim is Kit, a mysterious girlish ghost. Things don't go as planned and Caim must improvise. After some action, Caim's next assignment gets him drawn into a power struggle between corrupt government officials. He ends up protecting a stunningly beautiful maiden with a noble birthright against some powerful enemies. The book is only about 250 pages and the story is fast paced. But, the characters are very stereotypical and their motivations are weak at times. It's as if the author wrote some plot points for a "good guy" assassin story and wasn't really sure how to get the characters from A to B to C to D... The story is a solid one and you can root for the good guys, if you don't think too hard.

Characters:
The characters are very cookie cutter and 1 dimensional because their motivations are never really explained. It's as if X character does evil things because he is supposed to be evil, and not X character does evil things because his ambitions and opportunities are forcing him to act in this manner.

Caim, the kind hearted assassin who only kills bad people and becomes the perfect gentleman when the situation calls for it.
Josie, the beautiful helpless young maiden with the mysterious past and noble bloodline.
Levictus, the evil sorcerer who does evil things because he is evil.
Ral, a rival assassin and a traitorous traitor who betrays for the sake of betrayal.

They're all pretty basic. The one exception is Kit. She's a mysterious ghost and is only visible to Caim. They're best friends and she is extremely useful on missions because she can pass through walls and scout ahead. Unfortunately, their relationship is never fully explained and she vanishes for most of the book without a reason, aside from, "She just does that sometimes." It would have been really interesting to read about how an assassin with magical shadow powers got paired up with a ghost.

The characters feel flat because they've all been plugged into "The hero fights the villain for the girl" formula.

If Caim was a ruthless cold blooded killer who had a mean streak, but we still cheered for him in spite of this, the story would be much more interesting. (Malus Darkblade Omnibus)
Or if Caim was put into situations where he had to murder, but felt his soul slipping away from him with every evil deed he would have our sympathy as we felt his pain. (Erevis Cale Trilogy)
In this story, if we turned Caim into a knight and gave him a sword and shield, he wouldn't do anything differently.

World:
The world can best be described as typical fantasy set in Medieval Europe, with a bit of shadow magic thrown in. Shadows can hide the caster from enemies, or can be used to summon items, or beasts. There's really nothing out of the ordinary here. Castles, farmland, nobles, a church... No elves, dragons, fantastic ancient ruins, etc... It's pretty basic. It would have been nice if there was something memorable about this world.
On the plus side, this book doesn't spend pages upon pages describing simple things like tables and chairs, so that's a good thing.

Writing Style:
The writing style of this book is hit or miss. Some scenes are very entertaining, the dialogue is good, the action is exciting...
But there are other times, when the prose awkwardly misfires.
"The snake threatened to squeeze him in two." - When has a snake ever cut someone in half?
The color red is described as "The color of blood flowing out of a lung wound."
The feeling of sitting in sewage water is described as "sitting in a giant raspberry pie." - Yeah, I know that feeling.
"She knew he was strong when she saw his thick corded muscular wrists." - Not shoulders, biceps, chest... but wrists? Have you ever gone to a gym and seen a guy with buffed wrists?! Ever?!
"Somehow happened," shows up quite a few times as well, which is the ultimate copout word. "And somehow the knight rescued the princess." Oh, I guess I need to figure this out, instead of the author. Ok, I'll get right on that.

So the story flows at a fast pace, but many of the descriptions and metaphors will have you stopping and thinking, "Wait... what?!"

Action:
There are plenty of fantasy action scenes and assassination attempts. Most of the fight scenes are good and flow well, but again, some are a bit awkward. If you know anything about fighting, martial arts, or anatomy, some of the actions, fighting techniques, and combat details won't make sense.

Maturity:
This would be a good young adult book because it's streamlined, simple, and straightforward, but there's lots of swearing in the book. There's also violence, gore, rape... So this limits the audience to late teen or adult.

Overall:
If you're looking for a fast paced tale about a 'good' assassin that you can skim, this is it. If you want complex characters, complex plots, intrigue, great action, high fantasy with elves and dragons, you're going to have to look elsewhere. But right now this book is only $2, so it's a bargain.

If you like assassin stories, check out the Erevis Cale Trilogy or the Twilight War Trilogy by Paul Kemp, the Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks, or the Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. If you like Vampire Assassins, read the Ulrika books set in the Warhammer Universe.

The Essential William JamesFrom Prometheus Books

William James (1842-1910) was one of the most original and influential American thinkers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As a professor at Harvard University he published many works that had a wide-ranging impact on both psychology and philosophy. His Principles of Psychology was the most important English-language work on the mind since Locke’s Essay Concerning Human Understanding. His Varieties of Religious Experience practically inaugurated the field of psychology of religion, and it also remains a major inspiration for philosophy of religion. Perhaps most importantly, James publicized the movement of pragmatism and supplied much of its powerful momentum.

This book covers the primary topics for which James is still closely studied: the nature of experience; the functions of the mind; the criteria for knowledge; the definition of "truth"; the ethical life; and the religious life. His notable terms, still resonating in their respective fields, are all here, from the "stream of consciousness" and "pure experience" to the "will to believe," the "cash-value of truth," and the distinction between the religiously "healthy soul" and the "sick soul."

This volume’s eighteen selections receive the bulk of the attention and citation from scholars, provide excellent coverage of core topics, and have a broad appeal across many academic disciplines. This well-organized compilation of James’s important writings offers an exciting and fascinating tour for both the casual reader and the dedicated student interested in philosophy, psychology, religious studies, American studies, or any related field.

Everything Explained
By A Customer
If you read the other Replica books, you will know that there are a lot of secrets behind Project Cresent. In this 23 book everything is explained. If you did not read the previous books, you might want to read the first book first. If you don't and go ahead and read this one, there is no point in reading the previous books. Anyways, Amy keeps seeing arcticles in tabloids that talk about an island where a master race is being created. Amy starts to beleive this. Andy does too. Later on, Amy gets an e-mail saying to come meet some other
Andys and Amys. Once they arrive they find out they are on a journey to the island where they have some brother and sister clones being held captive. That begins in Return of the Perfect Girls. They find themselves in a mess. They struggle to fight for dominance. More mistaken identities, misplaced loyalties, and betrayals. This book sort of has the same idea as The Beggining. Well, I loathe reading. Although, when my friend recomended Replica i couldnt stop. I read everywhere! So, my point is...........if you havent already, bring Replica into your life!! Read WAR OF THE CLONES now!!

All the Great Prizes: The Life of John Hay, from Lincoln to Roosevelt, by John Taliaferro

The first full-scale biography of John Hay since 1934: From secretary to Abraham Lincoln to secretary of state for Theodore Roosevelt, Hay was an essential American figure for more than half a century.

John Taliaferro’s brilliant biography captures the extraordinary life of Hay, one of the most amazing figures in American history, and restores him to his rightful place. Private secretary to Lincoln and secretary of state to Theodore Roosevelt, Hay was both witness and author of many of the most significant chapters in American history—from the birth of the Republican Party, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, to the prelude to World War I. As an ambassador and statesman, he guided many of the country’s major diplomatic initiatives at the turn of the twentieth century: the Open Door with China, the creation of the Panama Canal, and the establishment of America as a world leader.

Hay’s friends are a who’s who of the era: Mark Twain, Horace Greeley, Henry Adams, Henry James, and virtually every president, sovereign, author, artist, power broker, and robber baron of the Gilded Age. His peers esteemed him as “a perfectly cut stone” and “the greatest prime minister this republic has ever known.” But for all his poise and polish, he had his secrets. His marriage to one of the wealthiest women in the country did not prevent him from pursuing the Madame X of Washington society, whose other secret suitor was Hay’s best friend, Henry Adams.

All the Great Prizes, the first authoritative biography of Hay in eighty years, renders a rich and fascinating portrait of this brilliant American and his many worlds.

From Booklist
If not ringing a bell for general-interest history fans, the name John Hay should resonate with Civil War buffs because he was Lincoln’s secretary. From this life-altering relationship that the 22-year-old Hay formed with Lincoln, author Taliaferro departs for the subsequent course taken by his subject, which ended with Hay’s 1905 death in harness as secretary of state. At heart more a literary than political personality, Hay left a capacious and varied body of writing for Taliaferro to shape into a narrative arc: it consists of Hay’s Civil War diary; poems, short stories, and novels; editorials and political tracts; a monumental Lincoln biography; private letters; and diplomatic documents. Setting Hay into the frame of late-nineteenth-century America, Taliaferro sympathetically shows Hay making his way. Marrying money helped, and as Hay advanced in politics and publishing, he could detach himself from affairs and cultivate friendships he formed with the leading intellectuals of his time, such as Henry Adams and Henry James. Spiced by Hay’s extramarital pursuit of a socialite, Taliaferro’s textured portrait exemplifies the better productions of the biographical craft. --Gilbert Taylor

Review
“Utterly fantastic…the definitive portrait of a man whose life spanned a crucial era in American history – and whose work helped to define that era. A genius of animation works on every page. It’s the author’s best book.” (Open Letters Monthly)

“Given that John Hay’s public career was bookended by his service to Lincoln and Roosevelt, it seems surprising that this is the first biography written about him in 80 years. Thanks to Taliaferro’s skillful work, it seems unlikely that another will be needed for a while.” (The Dallas Morning News)

"John Hay has long been one of those remarkable American figures who hide in plain historical sight—until now. With insight and eloquence, John Taliaferro has brought Hay into the foreground, telling a remarkable story remarkably well." (Jon Meacham, author of Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power)

“John Hay began his career as private secretary to Abraham Lincoln, writing many of Lincoln's letters, and ended it as secretary of state in the administrations of William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt, responsible for many of their foreign-policy achievements. He was at the bedside of Lincoln and of McKinley as each president lay dying of an assassin's bullet. John Taliaferro's absorbing biography of this notable author, diplomat, and bon vivant who knew most of the important people of his time fully measures up to the significance of its subject.” (James M. McPherson, author of Battle Cry of Freedom)

"John Hay is one of the seminal statesmen in American history. All the Great Prizes is the grand book he so richly deserves.” (Douglas G. Brinkley, author of Cronkite)

“One of the most intriguing political figures of the Gilded Age, Hay emerges in this beautifully narrated book as an astute, if sometimes unwilling, eyewitness to history. Making deft use of Hay’s own letters, some only recently discovered, Taliaferro brings the man to life.” (Martha A. Sandweiss, author of Passing Strange: A Gilded Age Tale of Love and Deception Across the Color)

“This is a great biography of a great American.” (The Washington Independent Review of Books)

“John Hay led more than one charmed life—yet endured more than his share of tragedy. John Taliaferro brings Lincoln's gifted secretary and biographer—and Theodore Roosevelt's accomplished secretary of state—back to vivid life in this page-turning account of an extraordinary eyewitness to, and maker of, American history. After generations of bewildering neglect, Hay needs a great biography no longer.” (Harold Holzer, author of Lincoln at Cooper Union)

“At long last, John Hay has gotten the biography he deserves. From his youthful service at Lincoln's side to his late years as Theodore Roosevelt's Secretary of State, this gifted writer, diplomat, and friend was a central figure in America's exciting journey from near-death to world power. John Taliaferro tells this remarkable life in rich and flowing detail.” (David Von Drehle, author of Rise to Greatness: Abraham Lincoln and America's Most Perilous Year)

About the Author
John Taliaferro is a graduate of Harvard College, a former senior editor at Newsweek, and the author of four previous books. He lives in Austin, Texas, and Pray, Montana.

Very comprehensive and informative biography
By Steven J. Berke
I have always been interested in John Hay as a historical figure, spanning as he did much of the late 19th century, and awaited this biography with great anticipation. It did not disappoint. This book gave an exacting and readable account of Hay's activities, his personal life and his personality, as well as the times he lived in.

The only flaw (the reason for four stars) is the misreporting of several historical facts--Kaiser Wilhelm II succeeded his father Friedrich III not his grandfather Wilhelm I; Charles Fairbanks, not Albert Beveridge, was TR's running mate in 1904. While these and a couple of other inaccuracies have nothing directly to do with the life of John Hay, they do cast a shadow of doubt on the overall accuracy of the book.

It started off like a good biography should, but . . .
By Simeon
It started off like a good biography should. But a couple of hundred pages in it began to melt. Mr. Taliaferro really gets bogged down on speculative extra-marital dalliances that are pure conjecture. Okay, bringing up the possibility is fair, but spending scores and scores of pages on "nothing" comes pretty close to making this historical fiction. Still, there's enough here to give one a decent picture of a more-or-less behind the scenes actor during a critical part of our country's history. Speaking of historical fiction, you might want to take a look at a fascinating book that is about something that just might happen. SEALED UP (Sealed Up: The Course of Fate: Book One) is kind of a Da Vinci Code and Indiana Jones rolled together, but in a totally believable setting. And its conclusion is so potentially disruptive and is portrayed so realistically that I'm still thinking about it.

Biography of a Washington insider who worked for three Presidents.
By Amazon Customer
This was a interesting book about a central character in American history who I knew little about. The book has a good mix of personal details along with historical context. Some parts got repetitive and in some areas I would have liked more depth. But it was engaging enough I always looked forward to the reading it. I got a good sense of the person and his times. The book was particularly interesting because John Hay knew all the major political players. He worked directly for three Presidents (Lincoln, McKinley, and T Roosevelt). It provided a good inside history lesson. It's not quite the same caliber as "The Education of Henry Adams" written by his longtime close friend, Henry Adams.

Two big thumbs up!
By Michael Corsentino
As a pro photographer, workshop leader, educator, author and all around lighting geek I consume photography lighting books the way other people eat breakfast cereal. Therefore I'm a pretty tough customer when it comes to content. I hold the bar very high and expect details, details, and more details. I look for thorough, clear explanations, behind the scenes images, diagrams, the how's, the why's, and most important - compelling images that leave me wishing I'd created them.

Neil Van Niekerk's book delivers on all counts! "Direction & Quality of Light: Your Key to Better Portrait Photography Anywhere" is filled with page after page of inspiring images and detailed information. Neil delves not only into how images were created technically but the thought process and reasons behind his choices. The book builds on a solid foundation of important lighting theory and technique and moves quickly into a plethora of real world applications.

This is a book by a working professional photographer for other aspiring and working photographers. No fluff, no BS, only solid, practical, real world information; just the kind of essential skills readers need in today's competitive marketplace. For these reasons I give Neil Van Niekerk's "Direction & Quality of Light" two big thumbs up and recommend it without reservation.

In a land where gods walk on the hills and goddesses rise from river, lake, and spring, the caravan-guard Holla-Sayan, escaping the bloody conquest of a lakeside town, stops to help an abandoned child and a dying dog. The girl, though, is the incarnation of Attalissa, goddess of Lissavakail, and the dog a shape-changing guardian spirit whose origins have been forgotten. Possessed and nearly driven mad by the Blackdog, Holla-Sayan flees to the desert road, taking the powerless avatar with him. Necromancy, treachery, massacres, rebellions, and gods dead or lost or mad, follow hard on the their heels. But it is Attalissa herself who may be the Blackdog’s—and Holla-Sayan’s—doom.

Review
"... Johansen's characters project believability, and her world is full of rich and vivid detail... High fantasy for lovers of mythology and of powerful beings in human form, this adult fantasy debut should appeal to fans of Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series." - Library Journal, Aug. 2011

"...intelligently written and allows the reader to become a sympathetic co-traveller ... I like large books when the story is well told. The better the story, the longer I want the book to be. Blackdog was almost 600 pages long. It was much too short."
- View from Valhalla, Nov. 2011

"This is a fantasy with a similar density to Steven Erikson's Malazan books, though with many fewer POVs ... It has that epic feel without bearing the cross of a million recycled tropes. Anyone who enjoyed the Malazan epic series will most likely enjoy this one as well ..."
-Bookspotcentral.com, Nov. 2011

"The book is so thoroughly developed, its mythology so complete, that it often gives the impression of being a single chapter of a much larger story, a window into an actual living breathing world. A must read book for those who love high fantasy." - Elizabeth Goss, Portland Book Review

"I’m hooked. The mix of magic, Tibetan-style religion, and Harold-Lamb-style adventure is pretty addicting."
JAMES ENGE, World Fantasy Award nominated author of Blood of Ambrose and The Wolf Age

"Interesting and absorbing; Blackdog takes as its heart, and its strength, a subject that most fantasy writers shy away from—the Gods themselves."
TOM LLOYD, Author of The Twilight Reign series

A new Realm for Fantasy at last!
By Debra Terry
For years now I have been looking for a fantasy book that is set in a non European setting and is as satisfying as the classics of the Fantasy genre. I have at last found this in "Blackdog". The setting is a mix of Tibetan and Mongolian settings, the plot is intriguing right from the first page; grabbing a hold of you and keeping you glued to the page until the plot come to a most satisfying ending. I would recommend this book to anyone but especially those who have some interest in Tibet and other oriental regions. It's simply fantastic! I do hope the author decided to give a us another book from this world!

Solid fantasy with a few issues
By Elemental Warp
Blackdog, on the whole, is a solid fantasy with great concepts slightly spoiled simulatneously by insufficient explanation and bloat.
How can it be both?
The book is 546 pages long (my edition, anyway) and there are precious few books over 350 pages that couldn't benefit from some cutting. At the same time, there are a lot of things going on - gods and goddesses manifest in natural features, various cultures and tribes, scattered priestesses, devils, wizards - and it's hard to keep it all straight.
That being said, the storyline is quite interesting and engaging. A too-human-yet-too-divine avatar of a goddess is torn from her land and forced to flee for her life from an evil wizard. While a fugitive, she both finds her humanity and her godhead, while her journey is criss-crossed by others divine and demonic beings.
Magic and divinity pervades the story but doens't overwhelm it. Spirits possess people ad become a hybrid of both, skinchangers walk with immortal assassins, wizards use their offspring for their own corrupt purposes.

It's all very interesting, but unless you can read in more or less one stretch (I've been trying to read it during NaNoWriMo and that doesn't really work), it would have a lot more emotional impact. If you break up your reading sessions, or if it takes too long to finish it, you'll lose some of the punch and have to be reminded of "who is this again?" and "what are they doing here?" time and time again. The wide cast isn't necessarily a problem, but there is no appendix or list of them, and many of them are largely interchangeable, especially when it comes to the caravaneers.

But, all in all I really liked the story and was pleased with the conclusion which felt natural and unforced. I still have some confusion over certain concepts and the meaning of certain scenes, but that was probably my fault as a reader more than the author's writing style.

I wouldn't anti-recommend this book, but I will say that you should be a fan of fantasy epics and epic fantasy casts before you pick it up. On a less charitable day, I could probably be convinced to give this book only 3 stars, but on a more charitable day, I might give it 5. So solid 4 stars, if you can keep the different characters and their storylines straight in your head

fun fantasy
By A Customer
In Lissavakail located in the Pillars of the Sky near a red coppery looking lake of the same name, blood flows as a massacre occurs. Caravan guard Holla Sayan starts to sneak out of the town, but stops when he sees a little girl and her obviously dying dog. He rescues the child while her dog, no longer needing to keep her safe, dies.

Holla was unaware that he recued the powerless Goddess Attalissa. As they flee the devastated town, Holla struggles with his sanity due to the Blackdog guardian spirit who was once a devil residing inside of him. Still he guides her onto the road heading to the Red Desert while mad Gods, traitors and necromancers pursue.

Blackdog is a fun fantasy due to the Johansen's fantasy realm coming across as real even with some powerful and other powerless Gods walking amongst the commoners. The story line is complex as treachery threatens the lands while the lead protagonists are fully developed with the Goddess being a child without power and the warrior being possessed. Readers will enjoy this strong tale.

Children of the Country: Coast to Coast Across Africa, by Joseph Hone

'Joseph Hone went to Zaire for the BBC. His aim was a series of talks about crossing Africa from coast to coast, as Stanley had done. That intention began, and ended, in Kinshasha... Having fallen in love in boyhood with the idea of Africa, he had looked for 'great liberating spaces', and found himself in a city from which there was no escape without a private plane.' Guardian

'For those who like to read, in comfort, about uncomfortable journeys, frightful hotels, dreadful meals, and broken-down capitals, I strongly recommend Children of the Country. The section on Kinshasha, in particular, is both alarming and hilarious.' Richard Cobb, Spectactor 'Books of the Year'

'A darkly coloured personal odyssey.... Hone hopes to achieve some kind of perspective on his unraveling marriage here in the landscape of his boyhood fantasies... His ability to articulate his own reactions to the landscape, combined with his precise notation of detail, lend his narrative freshness and vitality.' Michiko Kakutani, New York Times

Andrew Fletcher has been known since his own lifetime as "The Patriot" because of his determined resistance to the parliamentary Union of Scotland and England in 1707. More recently he has won a new reputation for the boldness, lucidity and originality of his political thought, in which he advocated parliamentary democracy, Scottish independence and European co-operation. This biography of Fletcher describes the events which led to the Union, and offers a critical analysis of his essays and speeches which takes account of recent scholarship on the subject.

“Remarkable insight and sensitivity . . . deepen[s] our understanding of human resilience and how people rebuild their lives from tragic circumstances.” —KENNETH ROTH, Executive Director, Human Rights Watch

“The stories in this book are eloquently and poignantly recounted, and offer a vital, complex portrait of what the long road to peace looks like.” —DINAW MENGESTU, author of The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears and How to Read the Air

“Profound . . . Rarely do we get the opportunity to delve into the thoughts of the young caught up in such a tragedy—and meet them not just once in their lives but again years later.” —TIM JUDAH, Europe correspondent for Bloomberg World View, Balkans correspondent for The Economist, and author of The Serbs: History, Myth and the Destruction of Yugoslavia

Imagine you are nine years old. Your best friend’s father is arrested, half your classmates disappear from school, and someone burns down the house across the road. Imagine you are ten years old and have to cross a snow-covered mountain range at night in order to escape the soldiers who are trying to kill you. How would you deal with these memories five, ten, or twenty years later once you are an adult?

Jones, a relief worker and child psychiatrist, interviewed over forty Serb and Muslim children who came of age during the Bosnian War and now returns, twenty years after the war began, to discover the adults they have become. A must-read for anyone interested in human rights, children’s issues, and the psychological fallout from war, this engaging book addresses the continuing debate about PTSD, the roots of ethnic identity and nationalism, the sources of global conflict, the best paths toward peacemaking and reconciliation, and the resilience of the human spirit.

Lynne Jones was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for her work in child psychiatry in conflict-affected areas of Central Europe and has established and directed mental health programs in areas of conflict and natural disaster throughout Latin America, the Balkans, East and West Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Her field diaries have been published in O, The Oprah Magazine and London Review of Books, and her audio diaries have been broadcast on the BBC World Service.

From Publishers Weekly
Unlike other adolescents who grew up in war-torn environments, the teenage subjects of child psychiatrist Jones, caught in the crossfire of the Bosnian war of the 1990s, are now more concerned with their personal futures than the memories of war, even though many endured four years of shelling and siege. In this absorbing study, Jones finds that Bosnian children who distanced themselves from the war felt psychologically more comfortable than those who tried to make sense of things—a finding that Jones attributes in part to their lack of direct participation in the conflict. In contrast to years of low-intensity conflicts witnessed by Palestinian and South African kids, she concludes, the war in Bosnia was a "prolonged high-intensity conflict in which children had little opportunity for active participation except in sharing the tasks of basic survival." It is sometimes challenging to keep track of the children's names and story lines (she uses only first-name pseudonyms) through interviews from 1996 and 2003, and anyone looking for a comprehensive history of the war won't find it here, but the book offers new insights into Bosnian Serb–Muslim relations through the eyes of children and addresses perennial issues of war, trauma and prejudice.

From Booklist
Jones, a child psychiatrist and a senior research associate at Cambridge University, worked with adolescent refugees from Croatia and Bosnia in 1991 and 1992, in Sarajevo while it was under siege in 1994 and 1995, and in Gorazde a year later. She found, of course, that the war had been a life-changing event for the children, but it had not necessarily made them ill. Her book is divided into three parts; in the first part, she describes the war through the eyes of 40 children and many of their parents, in the second part her focus shifts to the children's understanding of the issues raised by the conflict, and the third part concerns the war's impact on the children's psychological and social well-being two years after its end. It is possible, so she concludes, to grow up in the shadow of genocide and still retain vitality of spirit. George Cohen

Review
This is one of the most illuminating books to have emerged out of the embers of the Bosnian war. Few outsiders have acquired such an inside knowledge of the thoughts and feelings of ordinary Bosnians, on both sides of the wartime divide. Lynne Jones offers a fascinating picture of the fears, beliefs and false understandings that characterized this war--showing how even the most unreal fears can be induced, and perpetuated, by real political facts. She challenges not only the standard view of war and psychological trauma, but also the Western policy which still has not grasped how to make Bosnia whole again.
--Noel Malcolm, author of Bosnia: A Short History and Fellow, All Souls College Oxford

Lynne Jones is an internationally-known expert on the effects of war on children. Her description of the legacy of the savage war in Bosnia is a shattering but necessary read. What shocks is not so much the violence as the ways in which the damage endures after the end of hostilities. Jones shows that it is the persistence of injustice, the failure to ensure the return of refugees, and the endurance of stereotypes that prevents wounds from healing, not the trauma of violence itself. This book should be in the knapsack of every international administrator setting out for the Gulf, so that we do not fail the children of Iraq as we have those of the former Yugoslavia.
--Brendan Simms, author of Unfinest Hour: Britain and the Destruction of Bosnia

Lynne Jones's profound study will enrich the literature about Bosnia, the former Yugoslavia and of war studies in general. Rarely do we get the opportunity to delve into the thoughts of the young caught up in such a tragedy--and meet them not just once in their lives but again years later. This is a moving, well written and above all, deeply disturbing book.
--Tim Judah, author of The Serbs: History, Myth and the Destruction of Yugoslavia and Kosovo: War and Revenge

Lynne Jones brings to the extreme situation she describes a truly unique combination of hands-on communally oriented psychiatric help; sensitive research on the impact of war and upheaval on children; and an astute sense of the interplay of political policies and psychological behavior. We learn a lot about resilience, a word that takes on flesh in her compassionate depiction of individual lives. We come to recognize the importance of "distancing"--what could be called selective psychic numbing--for sustaining a balance between past and present experience. The book not only deepens our understanding of what happened in the former Yugoslavia but contributes greatly to our more general grasp of the consequences of death, loss, and dislocation, and the stubborn human persistence in the face of them.
--Dr. Robert Jay Lifton, author of Superpower Syndrome: America's Apocalyptic Confrontation with the World

Part narrative, part analysis, part thoughtful reflection, this book belongs among the classic accounts of children and war. To help us understand what war feels like by those who are forced to endure it, Jones shows how family and community influence young people caught up in terrible events, and argues disturbingly that even after years of relative peace, the conflict in Bosnia is not yet over.
--Jennifer Leaning, M.D., S.M.H., Professor of International Health at Harvard School of Public Health

In this absorbing study, Jones finds that Bosnian children who distanced themselves from the war felt psychologically more comfortable than those who tried to make sense of things--a finding that Jones attributes in part to their lack of direct participation in the conflict...The book offers new insights into Bosnian Serb-Muslim relations through the eyes of children and addresses perennial issues of war, trauma and prejudice. (Publishers Weekly 2004-08-30)

Children are often victims of war and political violence throughout the world, yet the impact on them is complex, according to Cambridge child psychiatrist and senior research associate Jones. For this timely book, Jones draws on her original research in the Balkans during the Bosnian crisis of the 1990s, including symptom checklists for more than 300 youth and personal encounters with 40 children...A thought-provoking and readable work.
--Antoinette Brinkman (Library Journal 2005-02-01)

Out of the horror of human cruelty in the Bosnian war comes a bright note. Jones, a child psychiatrist, studied a cluster of adolescents from two Bosnian towns--one largely Muslim, the other Serb--to see how deep and psychologically damaging the trauma of war had been. In 1996 and 1997, she socialized with and interviewed at length about 40 children in Gorazde and Foca and then returned in 2002 to follow up. The book begins with excruciating accounts of what these children saw and suffered, then turns to the way, as adolescents, they understood these events, and concludes with an assessment of the lasting effects. The bright note is that the overwhelming majority of these young people, now in their teens, were 'well'--that is, without noticeable psychological pathologies. The sadder note is that most had formed attitudes toward society, politics, and, in particular, the other ethnic group that were fostered by the first war and will be fuel if there is another. (Foreign Affairs 2005-01-01)

Then They Started Shooting: Growing Up in Wartime Bosnia is an account that beautifully illustrates the way in which people (in this case children) actively engage with the experience of war--a particular kind of moral problem--and how the meanings they attach to it shape their perceptions of themselves and their communities, and ultimately the legacy of the war itself...A highly original work.
--Derek Summerfield (Times Literary Supplement 2006-02-03)

This book focuses on the traumatic psychological effects of war on children two years after the conflict in the Balkans. The findings are noteworthy. The author discovered that, in fact, children's ability to cope is greater than expected, and that the majority of these children emerged from the war free from ill effects...For those in the CF who have served in the Balkans, a work of this nature is groundbreaking, informative, and pivotal in our understanding of the effects of war on children. It broadens our traditional focus in the Balkans of mitigating the physical hardships through donations of clothes or money, or through building and repairing schools. It is an interesting read.
