About the Author

Golder N. Wilson, MD, PhD has spent 27 years in academic medicine, conducting NIH-sponsored laboratory research and being elected to the Society for Pediatric Research. Over the past decade, Dr. Wilson's interests have concerned clinical care and education, with particular focus on parent education and preventive management regarding children with mental disability and birth defect syndromes. He has produced a pioneering book with the developmental pediatrician Carl Cooley, M.D.: Preventive Management for Children with Birth Defects and Syndromes, published by Cambridge University Press. Dr. Wilson's focus is to interpret patterns of anomalies/genetic disorders pre- and post-natally, and to complement diagnosis with educational information and management checklists that optimize medical care for children with special health care needs.

Following its 2008 report highlighting the urgency of expanding and strengthening the geriatric health care workforce, the IOM was asked by the Department of Health and Human Services to undertake a complementary study on the geriatric mental health and substance use workforce. The Mental Health and Substance Use Workforce for Older Adults: In Whose Hands? assesses the needs of this population and the workforce that serves it. The breadth and magnitude of inadequate workforce training and personnel shortages have grown to such proportions, says the committee, that no single approach, nor a few isolated changes in disparate federal agencies or programs, can adequately address the issue. Overcoming these challenges will require focused and coordinated action by all.

He discovered a group of violent, furiously nationalistic, xenophobic and racist young men, many employed in high-paying blue-collar jobs, who actively enjoy destroying property and hurting people, finding "absolute completeness" in the havoc they wreak. He also discerned strong elements of latent homosexuality in this destructive male bonding. Following his subjects from local matches to contests in Italy, Germany and Sardinia, Buford shows that they are the same wherever they go: pillaging soldiers fighting a self-created war.

Buford, a native of the United States, is the editor of the London-based literary magazine Granta . In 1982 he witnessed the takeover of a train, a football special, by English soccer thugs. He reveals how fascination for this distinctly English phenomenon of "soccer hooliganism" led him to follow a group of violent supporters of the Manchester United Red Devils. Buford is accepted into the group and in time seems to develop a sixth sense about impending violence or when things, in English parlance, are "going to go off." Particularly riveting is his account of the aftermath of a match in Turin, Italy, where 200 or so Manchester supporters marched through the ancient streets leaving fire and destruction in their wake. Buford's original theories on football violence, fraught with notions about disenfranchised youth and the frustration of the working class, are forever dashed. A horrific and almost unbearably up-close look at British football (soccer) fan violence; by the editor of Granta. There's very little football here as Buford follows the ``supporters'' on their Saturday jaunts from 1982-90. During these years, British football fans and their loosely organized ``firms''- -with their bizarre ties to white-power groups, skinheads, and the National Front--were involved in scores of deaths, countless riots and skirmishes with police and rival supporters, and untold damage to property in England and across the continent. The violence is merely highlighted by the dozens dead at Heysel Stadium in Brussels in 1985, and by the 1989 FA Cup semifinals, in which 95 fans were crushed to death in a misguided attempt at crowd control. It is that ``precise moment in its complete sensual intensity'' when the crowd goes over the edge and erupts into heedless violence that captures Buford's attention as he attempts to understand such ferocious behavior. He witnesses--and gets swept up in--crowd scenes so ugly and alien that the individuals he comes to know-- Daft Donald, DJ, Mick, Berlin Red--seem utterly beside the point. (Buford observed one supporter head-butt a policeman, then suck out and bite off the cop's eyeball). He finds that ``violence is their antisocial kick, their mind-altering experience,'' and notes that ``this...is the way animals behave....'' Following his own brutal beating at the hands of Sardinian riot police, a despairing Buford concludes that, in a society that offers little to look forward to or to believe in except ``a bloated code of maleness, an exaggerated, embarrassing patriotism, a violent nationalism, an array of bankrupt social habits,'' youth, out of boredom, frustration, and anger, will use violence ``to wake itself up.'' Rude, Brittania

Bill Buford, a naive American adrift in England, tackles a very dicey subject: Mob violence by English football fans. He starts out innocently enough, trying to find the allure, cause, nature, basis, and form of England's notorious football hooligans, but soon has difficulty separating himself from his subject matter.
As he relates his journey into the world of the yobs, we get a vivid picture of the people and the events, but no real glimpse into what is behind the football mob violence -- even after Buford spends most of the second half of the book trying to work it out. The only real insight were provided is that the mob becomes greater than the sum of its parts, and that there is a line where a person within the mob ceases to be an individual, and becomes a compnent of a greater organism.
However, questions such as why sporting crowds in the US, Canada, or other countries never reach the level of violence or mob mentality as seen in England are never addressed, nor are questions of why this sort of violent behavior seems to be limited to a very large degree to football (soccer) crowds. Of course, that subject is beyond the scope of any one book.
Still, the snapshot into the seedy world of NF members, jingoistic supporters, drunks and felons provided by Buford is entertaining, in a voyeuristic sort of way. Besides, unless you are intimately familiar with crowds at English, or any European, football matches, Buford's book is best if taken as a sort of superficial sociological travelogue, offering a glimpse into a strange land, complete with foreign customs, traditions, uniforms and etiquette.
Reading 'Thugs' won't provide too much enlightentment on sports violence or the psychology of mobs, but it will entertain. And with the coming Euro2000 tournament, reading this may prove timely, as well.

Some excellent passages, some quicksand

The first few chapters are brilliant and the subject matter so obscure and shocking, the book draws one in immediately. Book still rings when author is focused on descriptions, dispassionate observations of violent football fans and their rituals, habits. As the book goes on, author shifts to long passages of his philosophy of groups, violence, his feelings...and these are tiresome. They are not well-researched or well-informed, simply one person's perspective and detracts from author's skill as an anthropological observer of niche urban culture. Mixed review. Loved the descriptive parts, ended up skimming the long philosophical dialogues. Still worth reading for the descriptions of a subgroup one is not likely to meet, or if they do meet may not live to tell about.

A supporters frenzy

After being a huge fan of American sports and falling into football in early 2000's this is not to be dismissed. The mob mentality is affront and the fact that the MLS is trying to propagate this between New York teams is frightening and truly without merit. They have no history and as such is truly the meaning of mob mentality.

The Warping of Our Minds

One of the more important ideas concerns what John W. Reich tells us, “Why voices of modernization can’t be heard.” I’m glad someone stepped up to explain why so many concerns of public projects and information wind up distorted or even forgotten. The book offers answers. Among these, is the polarization effect, when two sides take opposite points of view we are forced to side with one of them. These tend to distort the message and forces people to ignore the main concern. It’s attitudinal and emotional appeals that influence our judgments. Reich offers insights into the psychological and social influences that need examination. These are not solutions to our most pressing problems, but inspirations that give us a starting point to discover a way to work together.

He mentions various kinds of effects that tend to alter an individual’s state of mind. On the one hand, the author points out that such influences are inescapable. However, he leaves the door open to rediscover the self. It’s like a dyslexic child maturing and overcoming his dyslexia. Can we overcome the warping of what we hear? A thought-provoking book.

Doak is the doyenne of foundation paper piecing—a quilt-piecing technique that uses a paper foundation for precision stitching of quilt blocks. Her latest collection focuses on quilt blocks and border units that can be combined in a variety of ways, each with a unique look. Printable and resizable foundation patterns, cutting charts, and setting ideas for 24 blocks and eight corner units are presented, as well as eight quilt projects incorporating the blocks from the collection. Most of the blocks are beginner friendly, and Doak's expert guidance helps quilters new to the technique get started. Here is an opportunity to try Carol's inspirational quilts projects by learning how to work with unit placement, how to paper piece and how to choose your fabrics. I found it amazing to discover how just one rectangle unit works equally well in both blocks and borders and using the full-size paper piecing patterns make it almost foolproof. There are 32 paper-pieced units to choose from, 8 illustrative quilts, showing the foundation patterns in use, how change of colour alters the look of the block dramatically, and a bonus CD which enables you to do re-sizing of the foundations should you wish.

Instead of giving designs for square quilt blocks, Carol Doak's clever concept is to design rectangular paper-pieced units which can then be combined in different ways to make unique blocks or borders. Each unit is presented with multiple design possibilities, reinforcing their versatility. As a bonus, resizable foundation patterns are on a CD included with the book.

Speaking of technology, you have to love it when a great book not only comes with some wonderful quilt designs and a multitude of variations on each but also includes a CD that allows you to change the size of your quilt or design your own patterns or print your foundations from your computer. Carol Doak's designs are paper pieced and patterns are included for copying or you can print (and resize if you wish) from your computer using the CD. What I particularly like is that Carol includes a gallery of blocks used in the book. While the book gives you many ideas and variations for these blocks, Carol also encourages you to play with them using your own fabric choices and layouts, thereby creating a quilt that is your own.

This new book is fantastic

Carol has done it again by bringing something new and exciting to the quilting world and paper piecing. This book gives us even greater opportunity for creativity with the use of her "double duty units" and instructions for completing a great variety of quilts. Upon receiving the book, I immediately turned out a cute tabletopper using one of the units introduced in this book. Fun, fast and creative. The rectangular units printed on legal size foundations quickly allow the paper piecer to dive into a new realm while gaining a sense of accomplishment. Thanks Carol Doak for sharing your gifts with the quilting community.

Another Winner

Just when you thought you knew everything there was to know about Carol Doak's books and blocks, she's created a new kind of block that will give paper piecers a whole new look to play with. The oblong blocks she's created were serendipity, in that she wanted to create borders, but realized the blocks themselves were wonderful to work with. These oblong blocks can also be used with the normal square blocks we're all used to, creating stunning quilts, and both sizes are in the book. The oblong blocks are sized to be used on her Legal sized foundation paper, and she included a CD in the book that is part of the Foundation Factory program from Quilt Pro. The CD contains every block in the book, and when installed on your computer, enables you to print the block in any size you want. So, if you don't have the Legal size paper yet, you can scale the oblong blocks down to fit a regular sized foundation.
All of Carol's books are wonderful, but in this one she's really outdone herself.
Paper piecers will find themselves playing a lot, while creating works of beauty.

Carol's Creative Combinations is a Winner

Carol's latest book with 32 paper-pieced units gives me even more blocks, borders and entire quilts to dream about, and then print and make whatever I can dream of making. Not only do the new units provide awesome borders in larger sizes, but with a simple rotation of the block I can assemble an entire quilt from these units should I wish. The included CD-ROM allows one to re-size the blocks to whatever size I need to fit my current project. This book provides at a mere glance whatever I need in lessons to enjoy paper-piecing forever. I thought I had learned all that Carol could teach me, but I was wrong. This book goes another step further. Don't hesitate to buy this. You won't be disappointed. The projects in the back alone are worth it.

PreSchool-Grade 3—This cautionary tale tells of a baker who almost loses track of his true calling while trying to outwit and outdo a competitor. The donut chef is proud of his newly opened store, and his success becomes so great that another man decides to open his own establishment, vowing, "Your shop is through.../When my store opens next to you!" The feud soon becomes fierce, with each owner creating confections in bizarre flavors like "Peanut-Brickle Buttermilk,/And Gooey Cocoa-Mocha Silk," and in even stranger shapes. But sometimes competition can destroy, too, as the sweets soon lose "their taste. They'd lost their soul./They'd even lost their donut hole!" It takes little Debbie Sue and her request for a simple glazed donut to bring the chef to his senses. Soon other customers are clamoring for the same thing, and, now enlightened, the baker goes back to basics. The entire book has a retro tone, from its lengthy rhyming text to its Art Deco-style illustrations, which are updated with more modern-looking graphic shapes and a multicolored palette. The pictures are slightly reminiscent of Dan Yaccarino's work, but with much sharper, more clearly defined lines. Aside from a jarring mistake when a shop "selling round the clock" becomes one whose doors close "at six," the story's lively rhythmic text and colorful artwork should make it a good pick for storytime.—Jane Marino, Bronxville Public Library, NY

Bob Staake, who grew up reading Golden Books, is a former political cartoonist, a highly successful commercial artist, and the creator of several critically acclaimed books for children. He has illustrated several recent New Yorker covers, and his 2006 Golden Book, The Red Lemon, was a New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book of the Year. He lives on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Love the Bob Staake books

Love the Bob Staake books. He's one of my kids' favorite authors. His books are fun, flow really well, and the rhyming isn't forced. The pictures are great and my kids and I really enjoy reading his books together. This is one we could read over and over again and neither I, nor my kids, ever get sick of it.

Follow the story of the donut chef, as he selects the perfect corner to create his store and builds up his clientele -- until that dastardly competition moves in next door and chaos ensues.

I usually avoid picture books in rhyme, as it's rare to find one that's done well. I can honestly say that this one works.

The text is strong and fun and the story itself engaging. The illustrations, with their geometric shapes, monochromatic colors, and varying textures, are sure to keep the attention of kids.

A perfect bedtime story with lots of re-reading potential!

A rollicking rhyme enlivens the beat of THE DONUT CHEF, telling of a baker who opens a business on a small street and watches the lines form for his famous donuts - until the competition arrives and a 'battle of the bakers' erupts. In an effort to out-do each other the donuts become stranger and stranger - but two-year-old Debbie doesn't want anything memorable, all she wants is a plain glazed donut. Can her needs change a baker's path? A fine story of competition and unique fare evolves.
