Very comprehensive book on cupcakes. Best I've seen so far (from someone who loves to cook and has literally hundreds of cookbooks). Some exciting and different recipes with full colour photos for each cupcake. Very happy with this purchase indeed!

Cupcake Inspirations

This volume lays out an excellent variety in cupcakes. It's far more than just a catalog of ways to decorate favorite recipes. BH&G's Cupcakes rewards creative bakers who take the time to study and compare the recipes, choose the ones they like best, and do their own experiments. As you'd expect, the book still provides great advice and photos on decoration, including a fine description on how to make and use edible flowers.
The basic recipes are well explained and illustrated. Most of them strongly resemble proven recipes. Home users accustomed to using mixes will be rewarded to follow the directions: First beat the butter, then cream in the sugar, then add the other ingredients. I'm a little wary of the recipes that use baking soda with buttermilk or sour milk as rising agents, and I have not tried any of those. (Usefully, this book says "sour milk" means fresh milk with lemon juice in it, so don't use milk that went bad in your fridge.) "Classic Buttercream" frosting isn't my favorite because I make mistakes and it gets crunchy too fast. Be aware that professionals can probably get reliable results from all these recipes, but the rest of us may need to learn from experiments with novel ingredients.
Some of the odd ingredients can produce great results. For example, gelatin works very well in the Orange Cream Pop Cupcakes. Some people think gelatin has an off flavor and will be satisfied with the novelty of one or two of these. At least where I live, no one can tell the difference between house brand gelatin and major brand gelatin. On the other hand, everyone prefers full-sugar gelatin to the sugar free version. Attempting to generalize this recipe to chocolate batter with raspberry gelatin produces wonderful results, while cherry gelatin unavoidably makes things taste medicinal at my house.
There are lots of places where you'll be rewarded by checking the list of ingredients to verify that recipes simply are not scary. The cream in Boston Cream Pie is an egg yolk cream. Simple. Easy. But feed them to your customers quickly, because the pastry will probably not do well in the fridge where the eggs belong.
This cookbook is well illustrated, the type is easy on the eyes, and it's chock full of inspiring ideas. I can't afford the calories, so I'm working on lighter recipes. It clearly makes a great gift.
