Outstanding Research and Discoveries: The Outcome is a Fair Tribute to Lewis

Meriwether Lewis' demise has been a mystery since his lonely death on the Natchez Trace at Grinders Stand en route to Washington to confront the man who would not honor his reimbursable government expense. Although there has been some speculation that Lewis was murdered, most historians agree that he committed suicide. Danisi, however, provides a new look based in his amazing, tedious, research that discovers many over looked documents in archives that provides a much more sympathetic and very possibly truer account. As noted on the foreword, this is not a retelling biography but each chapter is a vignette that tackles elements of Lewis' life, challenges, competency and a highly believable reasoning regarding his cause of death. Documents such as Lewis' court-martial of 1995 demonstrate that the charges against Lewis were not only petty but that Lewis was highly competent representing himself. As governor, Lewis was not only undermined by his territorial secretary Bates, who also served as acting governor but also was grossly undermined expense wise by accountant William Simmons in Washington who was infamous for not honoring receipts for reimbursements leaving military officers and officials like Governor Lewis on the hook and facing financial ruin. In addition to the financial stress caused by Simmons was the mail that would take an average of three months or quite longer. Danisi quite astonishingly has photocopied original letters, expense accounts and provides excerpts that clearly presents a good look at Lewis and the challenges he faced. Danisi addresses such fascinating controversies as to why Lewis stopped writing after the corps crossed the Rockies and why he did nit complete his book. The challenges of being governor are very well represented and aside from Bates, Lewis must deal with unscrupulous land speculative such as Moses Austin. It is no wonder he could not finish his book. Finally, Danisi provides a much fairer account of the reason for Lewis' death. Theories range from depression, syphilis, melancholy, hypochondria etc. Danisi focuses on medical documentation of Lewis' illness and a clarification of 18th & 19th century terminology, such as the use of hypochondria, that has a totally different interpretation of what it means today. Lewis, according to the author, was long suffering from malaria that plagued him throughout his life and could cause immense suffering and death as noted in the high loss of American soldiers by the disease. After reading the book, I find some relief in knowing that the complications of Lewis' death although of his own hand were not intentional to cause death. This amounts to a very complicated explanation provided convincingly by Danisi and his brother John in the final chapter. The book has numerous appendices of letters, court martial proceedings and other assorted documents. A must book for those fascinated with he corps of discovery and of Lewis, who is provided an even greater appreciation for his life and accomplishments.

Masterfully Written and Painstakingly Researched

It has taken more than two hundred years but with the publication of Uncovering the Truth About Meriwether Lewis, one of the most pivotal characters in 19th century, American history has been vindicated. Like so many of the framers of this republic Lewis was born in Virginia, but the almost three years as governor of the Louisiana Territory (eighteen months of it spent in St. Louis) were critical ones for him and for the young nation. It is fitting then that a St. Louis author, Thomas C. Danisi, has brought Meriwether Lewis to life almost as vividly as when he first arrived here in 1803 as the leader of the Corps of Discovery, commonly known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
This is not Danisi's first treatment of Meriwether Lewis but rather a follow-up to the comprehensive biography which he co-wrote with John C. Jackson in 2009 and which Prometheus Books also published. And although both books stand powerfully on their own, they complement one another handsomely. The first is a meticulous rendering of the events of Lewis' adult life and the second a passionate, minutely documented defense against the many slanders to Lewis's character that have persisted to this day - including accusations of alcoholism, mental illness and incompetent governance.
Uncovering the Truth About Meriwether Lewis consists of fourteen chapters that historian Robert Moore Jr., who wrote the Foreword, poetically describes as "vignettes," nine appendixes, seventy pages of footnotes, a twenty-eight page bibliography, an index of twenty-one pages, and twenty-five illustrations. Thomas Danisi is nothing if not precise.
And he needed to be. For much of what he proposes is new in the field of American history and provocative in light of previously published and long-accepted fact. He is also a marvelous storyteller, expressive in his knowledge and compelling in his arguments.
The documentation includes such dramatic evidence as the long-lost transcript of Meriwether Lewis's Court Martial when a young ensign, in which he ably defended himself and was cleared of false accusations of drunkenness and challenging a superior officer to a duel, and records made by Dr. Antoine Saugrain showing that he was treating Governor Lewis in St. Louis for malaria. Danisi provides further evidence that Lewis contracted malaria as early as 1795, suffered with it for the rest of his life, which accounted for his erratic behavior in the last month of his life, and died from it.
Lewis was but thirty-two years of age when President Thomas Jefferson appointed him territorial governor and Lewis governed the Louisiana Territory as competently as anyone could have expected - given the enormity of the Louisiana Territory's geographic size, and the complexities and subterfuge of area politics (for which Danisi provides clear evidence). That Lewis was at the same time preparing an amazing volume of research from the Corps of Discovery's expedition to the Pacific Ocean for publication and was very ill with recurring bouts of malaria complicated his official duties.
For all of its painstaking notes and attention to detail, Uncovering the Truth... is easy to read. Danisi has masterfully simplified the complexities of this history book into a collection of storytelling chapters. There's even a section in the back of the book (fiction weaved into nonfiction) that turns Lewis facts right side up. If you ever wanted to research history, this is the book to read.

Not what I thought it would be

The first few chapters are bogged down with direct quotes and description of events leading up to other events. The chapter on MacKay's map could have been left out of the book. I had to skip over that chapter. The evidence presented to explain why Lewis has 400 missing diary entries is weak at best. I don't think anything new was discovered here. The author just guessed like other historians. So far, I am disappointed. I hope the book gets better.
