Morthûl, the dreaded Charnel King, has failed. Centuries of plotting from the heart of the Iron Keep, deep within the dark lands of Kirol Syrreth--all for naught. Foiled at the last by the bumbling efforts of a laughable band of so-called heroes. Still, after uncounted centuries of survival, the Dark Lord isn't about to go down without a fight, particularly in battle against a mortal!

No, the Charnel King still has a few tricks up his putrid and tattered sleeves, and the only thing that can defeat him now may just be the inhuman soldiers on whom he's pinned his last hopes.

Review
"There truly is never a dull moment in The Goblin Corps.... I haven't enjoyed a quest fantasy this much since I read David Eddings back in middle school. Marmell has the wit and charm of Eddings's stories coupled with the grittiness of Joe Abercrombie or Sam Sykes and a narrative style that is completely his own. If you ever wished that Brandon Sanderson or David Eddings could be a tad bitter more realistic in content, or Scott Lynch and Joe Abercrombie a tad bit funnier then you will love the way that Marmell has struck a wonderful balance between the two. I haven't laughed so hard or been so into a book in many a year. Highly recommended!"
- Grasping for the Wind

"To my relief, The Goblin Corps possesses the same elements that made [Marmell's] The Conqueror's Shadow so much fun to read…a comical David Eddings-like humor, and Joe Abercrombie's kick-ass grittiness.... The Goblin Corps embraces its dark side-and thrives because of it.... The Goblin Corps is must-read material for anyone who is a fan of Joe Abercrombie and likes seeing fantasy tropes viciously subverted. Don't let the Abercrombie comparisons fool you either. Ari has his own style which he is perfecting, and if he can continue writing books like...The Goblin Corps, then I wouldn't be surprised if exciting new fantasy authors were one day compared to Ari Marmell..."
- Fantasy Book Critic

“Marmell has a clever sense of humor and writing, and the prose is good throughout…When the squad gets into fights, the text really shines as we get to see what tactics and strategy (or lack thereof) a squad of evil humanoids with little in common with each other would actually use. These scenes in particular are a glorious mess of chaotic fun. Rooting for the bad guys to take down a paragon of Light was never so much a guilty pleasure.” 3.5/5 stars
- SF Signal

“This is a book that took me by surprise - I simply wasn’t expecting to be taken in this type of story and at first glance utterly unlikeable characters. My prejudice only helped Marmell show me how little I know myself. I loved it…the stylistically effective prose, witty dialogue and vibrant action make, on the whole, for some highly pleasurable reading. Highly recommended.” 4.5/5

Fun story from an interesting perspective
By Nubby
I just finished the book and seeing that there were no reviews I thought that I would put something together.

Pros:
- The perspective of following the bad guys is fun, especially when you see how they solve tricky situations in ways that the normal protagonists of fantasy novels would never dream of;
- The characters are entertaining with constant bickering between members of the dysfunctional unit (which consists of an Orc, Troll, Kobold, Ogre, Hobgoblin, Bugbear, and shape shifter);
- The tone of the story is more silly than serious: bits of action are interspersed with slapstick comedy and a healthy dose of grumbling by the main characters.

Cons:
- The novel is quite long and unfortunately a bit slow in picking up the pace;
- The overarching plot is shallow;
- The ending is anticlimactic;
- I am also listing the humor in the cons section as I can see it being too juvenile for some.

Summary:
Overall the novel is light in substance but entertaining. I had fun laughing at the crew as they stumbled their way through the novel, cursing and complaining all the way. If you are expecting deep fiction, with intricate characters and a twisting plot (such as The Game of Thrones series), you will be sorely disappointed. If you are looking for a novel from a new perspective, and some fun, you'll have a good time with the Goblin Corps. Overall a fun and light summer read.

Wished I would have borrowed it, not bought it
By Kitten
I really, really wanted to like this book. The artwork on the cover and the summary on the back were compelling and promising for a great read.
Pros- It is a great concept to follow the bad guys. I actually wanted them to win, but not because they were humanized at all, but because they were continually goblinish.
I loved King Morthul. I could see him as vividly in my mind as I could the characters on the cover. And he was fascinating and revolting at the same time.
Cons- The humor between the characters quickly got old and very redundant.
The story was mostly aimless and written as if it was being created as it was going along. This aimlessness persisted to the very end.
One thing that drove me nuts about the writing is how he incorporated modern terms and concepts into this fantasy story. An orc refers to the game "Tiddlywinks" by name and also makes a reference to The Wizard of Oz by stating, "What do you want me to do, click my heels together and make a wish." This is just sloppy, silly, unimaginative, and juvenile writing. I had barely got myself past the fact that the characters talked like some loud mouthed construction workers, but I could not get past the modern references. Then out of the blue the worm king is introduced and he is speaking "thy", "thusly", etc. The inconsistency was unbearable.
The ending brings new meaning to anticlimatic. It was the worst ending that I have ever read. I feel that the writer ran out of room and just ended it as quickly as possible, and then he threw an epilogue in there to try and make sense of it all.
The story threatened to get interesting just past the middle of the book when one of the characters shocked me with a murder. I got excited thinking that it would take a new twist that I had not anticipated. This unfortunately did not happen and it continued on in a very uninteresting and monotonous fashion.
Honestly, I really wanted to like this book and I forced myself to finish, just in case. I know that I may come across as a snobbish reader. I can sit back and enjoy a decent B rate movie for an hour and a half and take it for what it is, but I expect more from a book that I will invest a dozen or more hours into. If I had borrowed the book I would have never finished it. I honestly only finished it because I paid for it.
If you are not a demanding reader, then you may like this book. But if you read a book expecting to be held in anticipation and to be thoroughly entertained, you may want to think twice before you start this book.

Great book
By Kevin
A good read with plenty of twists and turns. The characters are likable even and the banter between them makes even the less interesting parts funny.
