Levels of Life (Vintage International), by Julian Barnes

Julian Barnes, author of the Man Booker Prize–winning novel The Sense of an Ending, gives us his most powerfully moving book yet, beginning in the nineteenth century and leading seamlessly into an entirely personal account of loss—making Levels of Life an immediate classic on the subject of grief.

Levels of Life is a book about ballooning, photography, love and loss; about putting two things, and two people, together, and about tearing them apart. One of the judges who awarded Barnes the 2011 Booker Prize described him as “an unparalleled magus of the heart.” This book confirms that opinion.

“Spare and beautiful...a book of rare intimacy and honesty about love and grief.  To read it is a privilege.  To have written it is astonishing.” —Ruth Scurr, The Times of London

“A remarkable narrative that is as raw in its emotion as it is characteristically elegant in its execution.”  —Eileen Battersby, The Irish Times

From Booklist
Barnes, who won the Man Booker Prize for his most recent novel, The Sense of an Ending (2011), is a stealthy essayist. His tone is urbane and wry, his style pared and sure, but his emotions are stormy. As in his previous essay collection, Nothing to Be Frightened Of (2008), death is Barnes’ theme. Though one wouldn’t think so at the outset as he describes three nineteenth-century balloon flights in England and France enjoyed by three intriguing, eventually interconnected “balloonatics.” There’s rascally Colonel Fred Burnaby; Félix Tournachon, better known as Nadar, the pioneering aerial and portrait photographer; and the “Divine” Sarah Bernhardt. Barnes muses on why being airborne is exhilarating, in spite of one’s being at the mercy of “wind and weather.” The profound metaphorical resonance of Barnes’ fascination with ballooning emerges as he addresses the sudden death of his wife of 30 years and his painful plunge into mourning. This bright wand of a book is testimony to Barnes’ commanding artistry, delving intelligence, and high imagination as he writes of being “griefstruck” with stunningly vital and tonic perception. --Donna Seaman

“A rumination on grief and the alchemical power of love.” —O, the Oprah Magazine

“This is the most inventive and honest portrayal of grief we’ve read. . . . Barnes approaches memoir, a genre that too often errs on the side of sentimental, with complete grace.” —The Huffington Post

“Profound. . . . Harrowing. . . . Anyone who has loved and lost can’t fail to be moved by this devastating book.” —The Independent (London)

“Arresting. . . . Barnes writes with astonishing precision about mourning and grief, those areas of human experience so often camouflaged with evasion and silence.” —The Daily Telegraph (London)

“High art, essential reading. It is as powerful and well-articulated as Joan Didion’s harrowing and classic discussion of losing her husband, The Year of Magical Thinking. Barnes manages to be moving precisely because he leaves so much unsaid. His silences are eloquent.” —Daily Mail

“Moving, heartfelt, exact and telling. . . . A remarkable narrative that is as raw in its emotion as it is characteristically elegant in its execution.” —The Irish Times

“At times unbearably sad, but it is also exquisite: a paean of love, and on love, and a book unexpectedly full of life. . . . In time [this] may come to be viewed as the hardest test and finest vindication of [Barnes’s] literary powers.” —The Herald (Scotland)

The heights and the depths
By Jessica Weissman
Julian Barnes is incapable of writing a dull paragraph or a shapeless sentence. This short book puts together three narratives centered on love, on flying, and on the loss of love. Barnes has always been good at delineating emotion, and he does not fail here.

The first two parts, mainly about ballooning with a possibly apocryphal story about Sarah Bernhardt and one of her lovers, are vintage Barnes work. Swift, spare, and fascinating.

The third part is Barnes' grief narrative, about the death of his wife and about his grief. Lots of writers have written beautiful grief narratives - Alan Paton, CS Lewis, Joan Didion and Joyce Carol Oates among them. Each of these writers, while sharing the experience of grieving a spouse, comes up with a work wholly characteristic of themselves and deeply moving. Writers write - that's how they deal with experience. CS Lewis tried to figure out how death and loss fits in with his God, Alan Paton concentrated on the wonderful nature of his wife, Joan Didion on the unbelievability and starkness of grief, and Joyce Carol Oates wrote a very long and discursive day by day account of her grief and gradual recovery, with some guilt thrown in. Characteristic each one of them.

Griefs are similar (the world indifferent to the tragedy, the misery of life without the loved one, the unfamiliarity of familiar experiences, the inability to tell stories to the loved one, the unfairness and unfathomability of it all) but personal as well. Just as his predecessors were true to their writerly selves, Barnes is his usual spare, perfectly phrased and devastating self in this book.

If you've lost a spouse you'll recognize his experience and enjoy his superb way of describing it. If not, take this as a report from a country you may well visit someday. Worth reading in either case, with the bonus pleasure of figuring out how the first two narratives connect to the third.

Look Back in Anger, by John Osborne

In 1956 John Osborne's Look Back in Anger changed the course of English theatre.

'Look Back in Anger presents post-war youth as it really is. To have done this at all would be a significant achievement; to have done it in a first play is a minor miracle. All the qualities are there, qualities one had despaired of ever seeing on stage - the drift towards anarchy, the instinctive leftishness, the automatic rejection of "official" attitudes, the surrealist sense of humour . . . the casual promiscuity, the sense of lacking a crusade worth fighting for and, underlying all these, the determination that no one who dies shall go unmourned.' Kenneth Tynan, Observer, 13 May 1956

'Look Back in Anger . . . has its inarguable importance as the beginning of a revolution in the British theatre, and as the central and most immediately influential expression of the mood of its time, the mood of the "angry young man".' John Russell Taylor

Review
Play in three acts by John Osborne, performed in 1956 and published in 1957. A published description of Osborne as an "angry young man" was extended to apply to an entire generation of disaffected young British writers who identified with the lower classes and viewed the upper classes and the established political institutions with disdain. Although the form of the play was not revolutionary, its content was unexpected. On stage for the first time were the 20- to 30-year-olds of Great Britain who had not participated in World War II and who found its aftermath lacking in promise. The hero, Jimmy Porter, has reached an uncomfortably marginal position on the border of the middle class, from which he can see the traditional possessors of privilege holding the better jobs and threatening his upward climb. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

About the Author
John Osborne is Professor of Art History at Carleton University, Ottawa. He is a medievalist and cultural historian who has published widely on the art and architecture of Rome and Venice between the third and sixteenth centuries.

Be prepared for an onslaught of cynicism
By A Customer
You'll never meet a more unique character than Jimmy Porter, a 20-something British Archie Bunker. He's filled with rage at the absence of ... something ... and spews forth venom, sarcasm and utter misery relentlessly. Sounds horrible, right? Well, it's fascinating. I couldn't put it down, and I'd like to see the current revival of the play in NYC. I've seen a few people like Jimmy Porter, people who have so much potential, energy and creativity, yet for one reason or another it's all squandered. They fail to surround themselves with people of equal passion, and the result is that they hurt the ones around them, who are more at peace with themselves. The question is, how does someone so young get this way?

This play has a message that modern readers could make use of...
By Clark Gable
Writer John Osborne presents in Look Back in Anger an antithesis to the `drawing room dramas' of the period by writers such as Noel Coward which were popular in the 1950's. These dramas often featured polished and wealthy characters from the middle and upper classes, at their leisure within their homes and drawing rooms. Such plays fuelled what one newspaper reviewer from `The Express' termed as the `Illusion of Comfort' which pervaded the 50's.

After reading or watching Osborne's play no one can argue that he was under such an `illusion'. The play can be seen as a reaction both against the `drawing room' dramas and the general society which they represent. Rather than a drawing room with wealthy characters, Osborne selected as his setting a cramped and dismal one attic apartment and filled it with rough down and out lower class characters that were in so0me cases seen as uncivil for the theatre. Their language was coarse, their setting was harsh but worst of all to the original audience of this play (which no doubt had drawing rooms of their own) these characters presented to them a world which was uncomfortably realistic. It is this realism which may account for the fact that many viewers initially did not like Osborne's play as they did not like the world that it presented.

Jimmy Porter, the eternally angry young man who believes that he has life potential beyond being a sweets salesman is frustrated by the notion that he is never given the opportunity by society to fulfill this potential, he can never pull himself up from his social position, he is effectively `stuck.' The sense of being trapped in a monotonous cycle that he cannot break free of is reflected in the setting of the play, the fact the entirety of the action occurs within the small and confining attic/ apartment, and that each of the three scenes opens in an identical fashion further underlines the notion of monotony, of being static. Jimmy (like most of a whole generation) where raised on socialist principles yet when this generation emerged into the real world, they frustratingly discovered that the class system was still intact. Look Back in Anger explores this frustration, the agony of being promised potential (through things such as Jimmy's university education) and then to have that potential snuffed out by a society which is not yet ready to let go of its class hierarchy.

No doubt many readers will find this play disturbing or at the very least depressing, as the notion of being trapped in a dead end job or a situation where ones potential is not being fulfilled or even recognized is a common fear in modern society. Even though Look Back in Anger is very much so a play of its time, the themes that it traverses still has resonance in contemporary society, one only has to take note of the number of university educated waiters and barman to draw a modern analogy or parallel.

Angry Young Rebel
By J C E Hitchcock
"Look Back in Anger", first performed at London's Royal Court Theatre in 1956, is often cited as marking a theatrical revolution. The British theatre of the early fifties, dominated by playwrights like Noel Coward and Terence Rattigan, was widely regarded as genteel, well-mannered and middle-class. John Osborne's play can be seen as a deliberate reaction against those values. Its plot is conventional enough. It centres around the stormy marriage of a young couple, Jimmy and Alison Porter, who separate after a series of quarrels. Unknown to Jimmy, Alison is pregnant at the time, and he starts a relationship with her best friend Helena, an actress. Six months later Alison, having lost her baby, returns, and Helena ends her affair with Jimmy so as to allow the couple to be reunited.

What was shocking about the play was its social setting and the attitudes displayed by the characters, especially Jimmy. He is from a working-class family and, although he has a university degree, has turned his back on the sort of well-paid white-collar job that such an educational background would normally have led to in the fifties, working as a trader in the local market, running a sweet stall with his friend Cliff. He and Alison, with Cliff as a lodger, live in a dingy bed-sit in a large Midlands town. Alison herself is from the wealthy upper middle classes (her father is a retired Indian Army officer) and her family resent her marriage to Jimmy.

It was in the late fifties that the term "Angry Young Man" was coined by the critics to describe not only writers such as Osborne, Kingsley Amis and John Braine, but also their characters such as Jimmy Porter and Amis's Lucky Jim, who were seen as the mouthpieces of their creators. Jimmy is, to borrow the title of a famous film of the period, a rebel without a cause.

In another Osborne play from around the same period, "An Epitaph for George Dillon", the hero, himself a playwright, is advised by his agent to cut out the long speeches from his latest play, which are seen as being "too Bernard Shaw". This is not advice which Osborne took himself, although the passionate, emotional "Look Back in Anger" is very different in style to Shaw's plays, which at times can read like extracts from the proceedings of a debating society. Jimmy gives vent to his feelings in a series of long, angry speeches. (As Osborne himself was to point out, there is something formal about these speeches, which he likened to operatic recitative).

In these speeches, Jimmy attacks the state of British society, and often takes the opportunity to have a go at Alison and her family (especially her mother) whom he sees as part of the traditional British ruling class. He is instinctively suspicious of any form of authority and of the establishment. He is hostile to religion and to the growing "never had it so good" conservatism of fifties Britain. He does not, however, himself really subscribe to any alternative system of values such as Communism or Socialism. A frequent theme of his complaints is that there are no longer any good causes to fight for; he envies his parents' generation who could fight the anti-fascist battles of the thirties and forties. (His father was a veteran of the Spanish Civil War).

Jimmy's relationship with Alison is a complex one, perhaps best expressed by the cliché that they can neither live with one another nor without one another. On the one hand, the differences in their personalities and their social backgrounds is the cause of constant friction between them. On the other, they have a deep emotional need for one another, shown by their game of "bears and squirrels". To an outsider such as Helena this is mere sentimental whimsy; to them, it is a way of expressing their mutual love.

One reviewer complains that Osborne had a "tin ear" for dialogue and quotes some of Helena's lines in support of this complaint. The problem lies not with the playwright's "tin ear" but rather with the fact that some people have tin voices. There are plenty of people in Britain, especially from Helena's upper-middle-class stratum of society who speak in precisely that stilted, formal tone of voice as a substitute for feeling. In the fifties there were probably even more.

Although it had enthusiastic supporters such as the critics Kenneth Tynan and Harold Hobson, "Look Back" was highly controversial when it was first produced, being too shocking for many critics and theatregoers in the fifties. Today it has largely lost its power to shock, kitchen-sink realism, bad language and anti-establishment opinions having become commonplace in the theatre over the last fifty years. Nevertheless, when well produced its emotional power and sincerity mean that it can still be an impressively memorable experience in the theatre.

Chilling!
By wrong_number
Since Amy Candler was built in a lab, she was made specially so that it was impossible for her to get sick. For all her life, Amy has never had a single disease--not even a cold. And whenever she gets a scab, it instantly fades away. But now, things are a little different. After visiting a mysterious teens' club, Amy begins to feel odd. Her special abilities aren't working, she can't think straight, and she's always passing out. Tasha and Eric are worried for their friend. They have no idea how to cure her. And if they don't figure out a way to make her better soon, their closest friend might not be able to live.

This Replica book can only be described in one word--chilling. Throughout the whole novel, you feel "chilling" as you wonder if Amy will survive and what could possibly be making her sick. I was pretty surprised at the end, although some people will easily be able to figure it out. The plot was good, but there's one scene in this book that's absolutely amazing where Amy has a vision of all the dead people she's experienced in her life. I don't know why, but that part really made me enjoy what I was reading. You should read it too!

Amy and Tasha are excited - Nancy Candler's very good friend and colleague Dr. David Hopkins has come to Los Angeles. And he has agreed to pierce the girls' ears! The girls are thrilled - but Amy is puzzled when it hurts her so much, especially since pain is never a problem for her. Soon after, Amy starts to get a bad fever and starts hallucinating. Tasha, although she knows Amy is a clone and shouldn't be seen by anyone who could figure it out, calls a doctor to take some blood from Amy. Soon after, Tasha realises it was the wrong decision. She needs to think of something fast, so she pulls Amy into the closet and gets into her bed, and even though she hates needles she doesn't make a sound when the doctor arrives and gives her the shot, and luckily, Tasha's quick change of mind produces a "normal" reading on the tests - something the orginization was hoping would show something of Amy's special genetic makeup! --This is one of the three best books in the series! I was impressed! Marilyn Kaye did a fantastic job on this one!

Be careful what you wish for.
By Clarissa
In certain suburban communities, much like Amy's town, there have been sudden increases in children showing signs of drug abuse. Parents are worried about what they can do to help their kids stay away from them, so when a new club opens up with its only goal as being a safe place for kids to hang out, everyone is thrilled. But after one night there Amy seems to be getting tired more often, she gets her first headache, and has this crazy idea that Ace Tolliver, the owner of the club, is actually an agent for the organization. And when she goes to confront him about it she passes out cold and it turns out she's got a fever that would kill a normal person. But Amy's not normal, at least she didn't used to be. I thought this book was great, we got to learn about another scientist from Project Crescent and found out that Amy's not completely perfect.

IBM i Masters
By James Stephenson
As a senior IBM i developer I bought this book as a quick reference book and for some areas of the IBM i that I have had not had much experience with like RSE and DB2 Web Query. About 75% of the book was in areas of the IBM i that I have already mastered but the book is very well written by expert IBM i Authors! I loved the layout and clarity and I can use this book as a quick reference book since all my ILE modern books were lost in Hawaii in 2009. This book is still relevant and I could not pass up the low price! It is great for junior and mid level IBM i developers and senior developers can use it for a quick reference book in areas of the IBM i they have not used in a while (like RSE). I highly recommend this book and these authors for IBM i developers especially at the cut rate price!

Name: Jeffrey Sebelia

Job: Fashion designer

AFTER HIS BAND, LIFTER, BROKE UP, JEFFREY SEBELIA ENROLLED IN SEWING CLASSES AT THE LOS1 ANGELES TRADE TECHNICAL COLLEGE. HIS MUSICAL BACKGROUND INFLUENCED HIS CLOTHING LINE COSA NOSTRA, WHICH WAS WORN BY SINGERS LIKE DAVE NAVARRO, TOMMY LEE, AND JENNIFER LOPEZ. IN 2006 HE AUDITIONED FOR THE DESIGN SHOW PROJECT RUNWAY AND WAS CHOSEN AS A CONTESTANT. THE RESIDENT “BAD BOY” WON SEASON THREE OF THE SHOW AND WAS FEATURED IN ELLE MAGAZINE. IN 2009 CLICHÉ MAGAZINE NAMED HIM ONE OF THE MOST PROMINENT DESIGNERS OF HIS GENERATION. HIS NEW CLOTHING LINE FOR KIDS, LA MINIATURA, COMBINES LATE-1970S POST–PUNK ROCK WITH PREPPY DETAILS. HIS LOVE OF MUSIC CONTINUES TO BE AN INSPIRATION.

What was the biggest challenge of being on Project Runway?

The [design] challenges were very hard for me. I have never been the best at sewing fast, and I’ve never considered myself to be a dressmaker. I strive each day in my company to improve and hone my design ability, and I know everything there is to know about garment construction, but in the real world, I spend my days working on design, costing, production, textiles, and merchandising, not sewing.

How did your career change after you won?

Because Project Runway is so popular, just being on the show helped get me interviews and opportunities I know I wouldn’t have had otherwise. That being said, there is also a stigma attached that most people couldn’t imagine. The fashion industry seems to have a love/hate relationship with Project Runway. While most who work in fashion will admit to loving the show, they are also a bit skeptical about what it means and don’t quite trust its authenticity. I personally have mixed feelings about it . . . because no matter how many challenges I’ve won, I know that my design ability reaches far beyond my sewing ability and that the time constraints inherent in Project Runway mean it is really a game show before anything else.

What have you been up to since Project Runway ended?

In the seven and a half years since season three, I have built and sold a contemporary fashion label business and am currently building a children’s lifestyle brand.

Where do you get your inspiration for designing clothing?

Inspiration for me comes from all over the place. But for the last year and a half, my fiancée has been my muse.

How is designing clothing for kids different from designing for adults?

At its base, there is nothing different. As a designer, I constantly try to put myself in the customer’s shoes and do research to learn as much as I can while removing my needs, so that I am not designing for me but for the customer. With kids, I just have a whole new type of customer who has so many different needs from me that have to be addressed. When I picture the La Miniatura kid throughout his or her day, I consider the week . . . school, after-school activities like sports and clubs, summer camp, holidays, birthdays, etc. I also draw on my childhood and my experience with my son.

What are some of the biggest challenges in this business?

The biggest challenge in the kid’s business as I see it is navigating the personal baggage of buyers and parents. For instance, I constantly am asked to use less red or purple in my boy’s collection because most buyers and parents see these as feminine colors. Meanwhile, I poll my son and his friends (both boys and girls), and I have found that kids love color and don’t attach any gender identification with colors.

What has been one of the most exciting moments you’ve had since starting in this industry?

Each business I have started or been involved with seems to be exciting in the beginning. When starting Cosa Nostra years ago, it was exciting to have people like Elton John, Winona Ryder, John Galliano, and Karl Lagerfeld buy my clothes. Now it’s exciting taking La Miniatura and opening doors like Harrods, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, and Bergdorf Goodman.

Who would you like to see wearing your clothes?

As many kids as possible.

What advice would you give aspiring designers?

Be obsessed! Be humble and learn as much as you can, and as long as you have the drive . . . don’t give up. The reward is well worth the hard work.

I enjoy the speed of fashion. I love doing different things, and I think I still have something valid to say in fashion.

FASHION IS BIG BUSINESS 1

The fashion industry employs 4.2 million people.

Only 19,300 of the people who work in fashion are fashion designers.

The average fashion designer makes $62,610 a year.

Americans spend $250 billion on fashion every year.

Globally, fashion is a $1.2 trillion industry.

Clothing accessories make up $16.5 billion of the market.

Americans spend $34.1 billion a year on clothing and accessories at online retail stores.

Name: Courtney Allegra

Age: 16

Job (when not studying!): Fashion designer

DOES THE THOUGHT OF CREATING SIXTY DIFFERENT CLOTHING LOOKS IN ONE YEAR SEEM EXCITING? WHAT IF YOU’RE ALSO AN EQUESTRIAN AND A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT? TO MOST PEOPLE, THIS MAY SEEM LIKE A LOT, BUT COURTNEY ALLEGRA IS ACCOMPLISHING IT. HER VIBRANT AND WELL-TAILORED CLOTHES HAVE APPEARED AT LOS ANGELES FASHION WEEK AND IN SEVENTEEN MAGAZINE. IN 2013 SHE WAS INVITED TO APPEAR ON THE TODAY SHOW AS A PART OF THE “STARS FOR TOMORROW” SEGMENT. SHE DRESSES CELEBRITIES AND FRIENDS OF ALL AGES AND SIZES. WHAT STARTED AS A HOBBY ALLEGRA SHARED WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS HAS TURNED INTO A BUDDING CAREER.

When did you discover your love for fashion and designing?

I’ve always been into fashion and drawing sketches, but it wasn’t until I was fifteen that I got serious about designing. A family friend who knows I love fashion asked me to debut a clothing line at a show in Los Angeles during fashion week. Obviously I said yes, and I had to create ten looks in only two weeks! My line was very well received. After the show, lots of people were interviewing me and just asking where to buy my clothes. And that’s when I figured out that I had to make a website if my designing was going to be serious.

How do you balance school and work responsibilities?

It’s challenging, to say the least. This year, my junior year, I’m taking online classes rather than physically going to high school. It’s way easier as far as time goes because I can meet certain deadlines for fashion shows and whatnot without missing school. I also have more time for my horses and animals now!

Where do you find inspiration for your fashion design?

I find inspiration in everything. My favorite movies, other people’s styles, magazines, shopping for fabrics, and especially traveling.

What do you like most about having your own line?

The thing I like the most about having my own line is being in charge. If I were working for another designer or fashion house, I wouldn’t be able to have the freedom to create whatever I want. I love having my own line because there are no limits and I can be as creative as I want.

What is the most challenging thing about having your own line?

The most challenging is working with manufacturers. Now that my business has grown, I had to pick some manufacturers to work with. When I started designing for men, I thought that was going to be a bigger challenge, but it isn’t. It’s hard to communicate exact ideas to manufacturers, so I always have to go to Los Angeles to supervise and fit the clothes.

What has been one of the most exciting moments you’ve had since starting your fashion career?

One of the most exciting moments was showing my line on Fashion Minga’s runway! It was the debut of my line CA11, which is a men’s and women’s urban punk line.

What advice can you give other kids who are interested in a fashion career?

If you want to be in fashion, you have to be determined, focused, and confident. Don’t follow the trends if you don’t want to. Honestly, there are no real trends anymore. If you walk down the street, everyone has different styles, and most people could care less about trends. Design what you want!

Name: Cecilia Cassini

Age: 14

Job (when not studying!): Fashion designer

CECILIA CASSINI IS ONE OF THE YOUNGEST DESIGNERS IN THE WORLD TO SEE HER CLOTHES WALK DOWN THE RUNWAY. IN THIRD GRADE, WHEN OTHER KIDS WERE READING CHAPTER BOOKS, SHE WAS WRITING A BOOK REPORT ON THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. HER FASHION LABEL LAUNCHED IN 2009, WHEN SHE WAS NINE YEARS OLD. BY THE TIME SHE WAS ELEVEN, SHE HAD DESIGNED OVER FIVE HUNDRED PIECES FOR GIRLS AGES FOUR TO FOURTEEN. SHE IS PASSIONATE ABOUT FASHION DESIGN AND ENCOURAGES OTHER KIDS TO FOLLOW THEIR DREAMS. AS A ROLE MODEL, SHE INSPIRES KIDS BY SPEAKING AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, HOSPITALS, AND SHELTERS. HER CHARITABLE WORK LANDED HER A PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARD IN 2012. CECILIA IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF HOW YOU’RE NEVER TOO YOUNG TO FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS!

When did you discover your love for fashion and designing?

I truly believe that I was born with fashion in my blood. Ever since I can remember, I have always been obsessed with fashion and fabulous clothing. When I was in preschool, I used to paint flowers and rainbows on my dresses instead of on the paper on the easels. By the time I was about four, I was embroidering my clothing. When I was five, I began cutting up my clothing (or my mom’s or sister’s) and repurposing them into new and fabulous creations. I remember I would hem the dresses with hair clips, and I would sew the different pieces together with ponytail holders. Finally, when I was six, I got my first sewing machine, and that is when I really began to be able to design and create my fashion.

How do you balance school and work responsibilities?

In order to handle my school and fashion responsibilities, I need to be very organized and manage my time wisely. It is important to me that I do well in school, so I always make sure to stay on top of my workload and never get behind. When I can, I even work ahead so that when I am inspired, I will have time to design and create. When I know I have a specific event coming up for my fashion, I plan ahead.

What do you like most about working in fashion?

The best thing about my job is that I have never considered my designing a job! Fashion and designing are my hugest passions, and I absolutely love what I do. To me, a job is something you have to do. I am lucky because I love designing. In fact, I think I live, breathe, and love it more than anything else I could spend my time doing. The other great thing about my “job” is that I get the opportunity to meet so many talented people along the way. Everyone I have met in the business—from Betsey Johnson to Heidi Klum to Taylor Swift to Sofia Vergara to Diane von Furstenburg—have been so supportive of my dreams and my work.

Also, as part of my “job,” I speak to hundreds of kids a year in my Follow Your Dreams campaign, where I encourage all young people to find their passion and to begin following their dreams now—rather than waiting until they grow up. Part of my Follow Your Dreams campaign includes giving dresses to needy girls at hospitals, shelters, or schools because every little girl deserves a dress, so that is very rewarding for me—to be able to help someone and to be able to give back. Because of my sponsorship with Singer SVP, I also donate a Singer sewing machine to each place I visit, so hopefully the kids will learn the art of sewing and be empowered by being able to design and create their own fashion. As you can see, my “job”—if you are going to call it a job—is the best one anyone can have.

What is the most challenging thing about working in fashion?

Sometimes the pressure to be able to design something for someone when I am not inspired is challenging. No matter what, I have the pressure to design something fabulous, and that can be scary when I am not feeling inspired. Also, the responsibilities and pressures that go along with my age (I am fourteen) are sometimes a challenge for me when I am designing.

What has been one of the most exciting moments you’ve had since starting your fashion career?

Some of the most exciting moments I have had since I started selling my designs at age ten have been going to New York Fashion Week, being featured in worldwide fashion magazines (Vogue France; Elle Japan; Grazia Italy, England, Germany; New York Times; People magazine; Glamour, etc.), and having a show on the Style Network. Most of all, seeing people wearing my Cecilia Cassini designs is really the most thrilling.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

In ten years I will be finished with university, and I will be a pro at showing my collections at fashion weeks around the world—from Milan to Paris to New York. I will also have Cecilia Cassini stores around the world.

What advice can you give other kids who are interested in a fashion career?

My advice to other kids who want to get started in fashion is follow your dreams. You don’t have to wait to be an adult to follow your dreams, so get started now! If you have the passion, the motivation, the work ethic, and the inspiration, anything is possible. Go for it!

Rafi Ridwan: Hearing Color

If you asked Rafi Ridwan if it’s possible to follow your dreams at a young age, he’d say yes. Born deaf, he has learned to hear sound through color. At the age of six, he discovered his love for fashion while watching Disney’s The Little Mermaid. He didn’t like the clothes Ariel was wearing in the movie, so he began sketching a new wardrobe for her. When he was nine, he attended a fashion festival and showed his designs to famous Indonesian fashion designer Barli Asmara. Asmara recognized Ridwan’s talent and created a collection with him. As Indonesia’s youngest fashion designer, he was given the opportunity to appear on America’s Next Top Model when the show was filmed in Bali in 2013. Tyra Banks named him the “newest, fiercest fashion designer in the world.”2 Ridwan is a role model in his community, and earned a lot of respect when he used his fellow hearing-impaired classmates to model his clothes at a fashion show. His dream is to show his designs at the fashion shows in Milan, Paris, and Japan. At only eleven years old, he’s already very close to achieving his dreams.

Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.

I'm not intending on working in the fashion industry, but I've read a different book in this series (So, You Want to Be a Writer?: How to Write, Get Published, and Maybe Even Make It Big!) and enjoyed it, so I requested this on NetGalley (plus, I like clothes).

Thank you, NetGalley and Beyond Words Publishing, for this free book to review!

I'll admit it, a lot of this book went over my head. If you're interested in the fashion industry though, you'd probably like this book. It shows a realistic way to follow your dreams, and it teaches you a ton about the industry. Who knew there were so many different paths that all have to do with clothing?

One thing I wished the book addressed was body image, especially in the modeling section. Just a paragraph or two would have been nice, since anorexia can be a huge issue for models.

Would I suggest this book to people who want to join the fashion industry? Absolutely. It's frank but supportive, offering lots of tips on how to get started, even if you're still a kid.

About the Author
JAMIE JENSEN has been immersed in road trip culture from an early age, thanks to a childhood spent drinking drive-in milk shakes and riding roller coasters in Los Angeles -- before they tore everything down. After a three-year stint hitchhiking around the country, making hay in Kansas, sailing boats on the Chesapeake Bay, painting houses in Boston, and living in the storeroom of a Manhattan music studio, he returned to California and earned a degree in Architecture from UC Berkeley, and then moved to England, where he began writing about America. He has since written an authorized biography of the Grateful Dead and contributed to numerous travel books on the USA.

He now lives in Northern California, at the west end of US-50.

From Our Springtime: Literary Memoirs and Portraits of Yiddish New York (Judaic Traditions in Literature, Music, and Art), by Reuben Icela

In New York in 1907, a group of avant-garde Yiddish poets came together to transform Yiddish literature. Seeking a pure artistic expression, they would rid Yiddish poetry of foreign influences and overbearing political and religious rhetoric. While influenced by their Eastern European heritage, these poets were nonetheless uniquely American in their focus on the exploration of the individual. Calling themselves di Yunge (the Young Ones), this group was led in part by Reuben Iceland. From Our Springtime is Iceland's memoir as well as a reflection on the lives of the di Yunge poets. With its vivid characters, beautifully crafted descriptions, snippets of poetry, and clear analysis of the poems, this book is a work of art in its own right, and an essential resource for anyone interested in Yiddish American poetry.

Translated into English for the first time, From Our Springtime brings this period in New York literary history to life and tells the story of how these poets transformed Yiddish poetry from an expression of workingclass struggles to a form of Yiddish high art.

Review
Marcus's translation is a critical contribution to our appreciation of New York as a global, multilingual literary center in the first decades of the twentieth century, and of ways in which Yiddish writers contributed to the multicultural expansion of American letters. --Justin Cammy, Smith College

Gerald Marcus has done us a great favor in his fine translation of Reuben Iceland, a most important figure in the American Yiddish literary world for decades --Jules Chametzky, coeditor of Jewish American Literature: A Norton Anthology

Reuben Iceland was one of the leaders of Die Yunge, a literary movement that was centered in New York
at the turn of the twentieth century. Die Yunge wanted to purify Yiddish and make it a literary language with
a stature equal to that of other western languages....Gerald Marcus gives the reader a clear, compelling translation of a passionate man surrounded by talents perhaps greater than his, who treated all his fellow poets like family....This memoir is a significant source for research on Yiddish literature in America. --Association of Jewish Libraries Reviews

About the Author
Gerald Marcus is a painter and printmaker who grew up speaking Yiddish in his home.

Fascinating
By Amaz Tanner
I am not a Yiddish speaker, but i really loved this book. The translation is sensitive and engaging, and gives a fascinating perspective on everyday life in the New York Yiddish poetry scene in the early 1900's.

A Bit Depressing
By B. Wolinsky
Yiddish literature in the USA is an irony. It was written by men and women who wanted to preserve the language, but at the same time they raised their children to speak English first. They put great effort into their writing, but they encouraged their children to not be writers. My grandmother, for instance, spoke Yiddish and loved all the stories and plays that came with it, but she didn't pass it on to her kids. Few Ashkenazi Jews today speak Yiddish anymore, and the Yiddish theatre companies of the Lower East Side are all gone too. The Satmar Hasids speak Yiddish, but it's totally different from the kind you'd see in plays. I remember the part in Unorthodox, where the author sees the old Yiddish for the first time and gets a shock. She says "boy was I surprised, the Yiddish we spoke was not the Shalom Aleichem Yiddish, that stuff was really naughty compared to what we had." Come to think of it, Shalom Aleichem raised his children to speak only Russian. Yiddish seems to stop at the next generation.

From Our Springtime is a journal written by Reuben Iceland (died in the 1950's) and translated by Gerald Marcus. Some of the essays are bit on the mournful side, like the one where he and I.J. Schwartz meet in Miami and talk about the death of Opotashu. He clearly accepts that Yiddish as he knows it will die out soon, as the next generation of Jewish Americans moves on. His entry on Anna Margolin says that her son became a politician in Israel in 1948, and that says quite a lot about the end of Yiddish; first generation Israelis never, ever, spoke Yiddish. They regarded it as a remnant of the Golah, a relic of their weakling past. There's a famous Israeli story by Aaron Megged called The Name (aka Yad Vashem) where an old man goes to war with his granddaughter because she won't name her son Mendel. He's like "what do you mean the name is embarrassing?" and she says "you can't give an Israeli kid a Yiddish name, he might as well be born with a hump!"
It's a shame that Yiddish didn't last the way other languages did, but then again, it didn't have the strength to survive. Back in the Shtetls, the Jews didn't write lots of plays and stories in Yiddish, and by the time Shalom Aleichem started archiving them, Jews were struggling to integrate. The Yiddish theatre in New York was prominent, but the children of the actors and writers had to learn in English if they wanted to succeed here.

The same thing has happened with lots of other languages worldwide. Gaelic is rarely spoken by young people in Ireland or Scotland, and the Breton language might cease to be spoken in France. Basque might disappear in one or two generations, along with Native American languages. In Cape Town, the Malay language has been lost, and in Louisiana the Cajun language might die out too. Perhaps the life and death of Yiddish in the USA is like that of other minor languages. Once the next generation integrates, the strands of the older language become lost.
