PreS-Gr 2—When Adam opens a striped gift box and discovers a plush koala bear, he takes an immediate dislike to the stuffed animal. Koala is "the most terrible terrible." Everything is terrible about the toy, especially its eyes, which "follow Adam everywhere." The young boy's parents, who do not understand his aversion, urge him to take good care of the toy. Nevertheless, Adam tries to get rid of Koala. Stuffing it into his backpack, he sets out on an imaginary journey and leaves Koala behind in a grove of trees. To his chagrin, the dreaded toy is waiting for him in the living room when he returns home. At bedtime, the little boy suddenly has a change of heart when he realizes that Koala's watching eyes will keep him safe from monsters in the dark. Concise illustrations stand out beside adroitly placed text, leaving plenty of white space on most pages. The fuzzy koala bear does look a bit menacing with its staring yellow eyes, and Adam's expressive face perfectly portrays his doubts and frustration. The cinematic quality of the digitally colored pencil drawings add drama to the little boy's dilemma. VERDICT This clever title will pair nicely with Anika Denise's Bella and Stella Come Home (Philomel, 2010), another story about the comforting friendship of a trusty stuffed animal.—Linda L. Sean Ferrell is the author of two novels for adults, Numb and Man in the Empty Suit. He has since grown up and started writing for children, too. His picture book I Don’t Like Koala was published by Atheneum in 2015, and The Snurtch, also from Atheneum, will be published in 2016. He lives and works, in no particular order, in Brooklyn. Hilarious!

We love this book and found it hilarious! I don't want to give any spoilers but not everyone likes stuffed animals and it's nice when a change of heart is always a possibility. Great Book!

I don't normally review picture books but this one that stood out to me so I felt the need too. This is a combination of creepy and cute, with just the right amount of morbid. This is now one of my favorite books that I insist on reading to everyone I know. In this book, Adam gets a koala, but he does not like the way that koala looks at him, he believes there is some bad reason for this. But over time Adam comes to realize that there is something more to Koala then just the eerie stare. Their might even be love there. I am giving this book five stars because I love everything about it. The illustrations are super cute and the story is perfect. It definitely leaves the ending open for a sequel.

Sooooo funny!

This book is absolutely hysterical! It's about a little boy who isn't fond of his stuffed koala bear, so he tries everything to lose it. In the end, he realizes koala isn't the most 'terrible, terrible' after all. Happy to have this one in our collection.
