Heartfelt and entertaining

Thoroughly enjoyed this memoir - being of the same vintage, it was lovely to revisit the values, thoughts and simpler way of life of the 60's and 70's - the dark and the quaint. Steve Bisley's talent for bringing his stories to life with humour and pathos make for a very entertaining read.

A Real Heartbreaking Heartwarming Story All in the One Book.

Each chapter is like a poetic self-contained story that contributes to the mental landscape painting of Steve Bisley's childhood as he recalls it to the reader as Stillways: A Memoir.
And that is the beauty of it, as a lot of Australians growing up at that time can relate to Steve's experiences, because his recollections aren't that much different from any other reader in Australia who came through that period.
Whether you lived in the city, or a small country town you'll find yourself relating to a lot of what Steve writes.
The magic of the book though is the way he writes as the naive little boy observing life through that child's ears, eyes and thoughts, so that you live the journey as though you are back there with him growing up and observing life's confusing dilemmas and questions as they spring up around him.
Whilst there certainly are some dark memories to fathom through on the journey, you will be surprised how many smiles, chuckles and laughs this book produces, not to mention the warm heart this book should leave you with by the time you finish the last page.
This is a book where Steve not only presents his memories to you, but some of yours as well.

LOVED this book, majestic, memorable writing

Bisley's recall is astounding, you are swept back in time and viscerally experience all the bells, smells and raucous rural life in between.
