Fascist Scotland, by Gavin Bowd

On 10 May 1941, Rudolf Hess, Deputy Fuhrer of the Third Reich, entered Scottish airspace in an ill-fated attempt to discuss peace with the Duke of Hamilton. For the Nazis, Hess was the victim of 'tragic hallucinations'. But how far had Hess really flown from reality? Although Fascism in Britain is normally associated with England, and especially the East End of London, and even then dismissed as a marginal political phenomenon, Fascism did find support in Scottish society. Scotland has provided its own cohort of idealists, fanatics and traitors for extreme racist, nationalist and authoritarian politics. From Dumfries to Alness, one of the main ideologies of the first half of the twentieth century found its standard-bearers. But when Fascism crossed the Cheviots, it found itself in a restless part of a multi-nation state, riven by sectarian hatreds. Rudolf Hess felt the natives looked at him 'in a compassionate way', but Scottish Fascism had to carve out a niche in a crowded market for bigotry. In this book Gavin Bowd relates a fascinating and little-known part of our history which reveals some uncomfortable truths which are bound to stimulate debate even now.

new insights

This is one of the new wave of books appearing in post-devolution Scotland looking at British history from top-down rather than from London-up. These books are rescuing Scottish history from its usual humble place in the footnotes of metropolitan studies. Here the author has used rich sources, notably the little magazines and newsletters of the fascist organizations, which tried enthusiastically to keep supporters' morale up in Scotland by announcing steady success. At times this push for fascism was simply comic, notably the solemn decision that a neutral gray kilt was to be worn with the black shirt, to avoid clan rivalries. Racism in Scottish academia is traced from the views of anatomist Robert Knox, through to those of Franco apologist Prof Charles Sarolea, and the concern about the Edinburgh-originated journal 'Mankind Quarterly'. Far-right candidates obtained only derisory votes in the Scottish cities but the citizens were not necessarily on the high moral ground, being more concerned with the catholic influx than alleged international Jewish plots. Even the Scottish Italians were cool about Mussolini and at a time when politics-by-public meeting was the norm, the Left could always disrupt city Fascist meetings: the fascists got a hearing only in small Border towns. More sinister was the fascism of Scottish conservative politicians, and these including Hitler's greatest admirer, Captain Archibald Maule Ramsay M.P., who, while interned during the war, was ever hopeful, like other Scottish aristocrats (and his wife), of a post-war job under Hitler.

anti-Nationalist rubbish

Although many of the facts presented may indeed be true, the truth can be twisted to serve special agendas, such as trying to tar the SNP with the brush of fascism in order to scare Scots voters away from voting Yes in the September 2014 referendum. Yeats and Pound admired Mussolini, but does that prove anything about whether Ireland and the USA were correct to break away from England?
