Good read and good reference

This book contains thousands of facts which refute the most common arguments used to attack the separation of church and state specifically, and secularism in general.

But it is much more than this. The Buckners present their well-documented material in the context of gentle, yet firm arguments. In fact, I believe that the subtitle, "An Atheist Guide to Religious Liberty," sells the volume short. This book may be written by atheists (and maybe that was the intent of the subtitle) but it is definitely not useful to atheists only. Politicians, religious leaders, and other authorities often make assertions about religious liberty, secularism, the intents and beliefs of the founding fathers, and the separation of church and state. Anyone who has assumed as true the statements made by these authorities may find within the pages of this book evidence that those assertions are either supported by history as we know it, or not. In either case, the Buckners approach the questions with intellectual honesty and a sense of fairness. Where pundits of the Christian right have distorted history to fit their own ideologies, the authors try to set the record straight. But where liberals and/or nonbelievers have misused history to their own devices, they are called out as well.

My guess is that one of the authors' intents was to produce readable vignettes of the many historical events relevant to religious liberty, while at the same time allowing each chapter of the book to stand on its own. An example is their treatment of the "Treaty of Tripoli" which is quoted so often as evidence the that the United States is not based on the Christian religion. The historical context of the treaty helps to understand the intent of the wording and the historical importance (or lack thereof) of the document itself. I read the book cover-to-cover, but that is hardly necessary. A reader could easily pick a chapter at random and take its lessons without reading any other. At any point at which the material currently discussed is supported by that in another chapter, there is a parenthetical reference to the supporting chapter. This may become slightly tedious for the sequential reader, especially later in the book when most of the referenced chapters have already been read. But I think it will be will worth any inconvenience when using the book as a reference.

The authors go to lengths to establish that even though they themselves are atheists, they are not anti-religion. In fact, they seem to believe strongly that all human beings have the right to adopt any religious beliefs (or non-beliefs) that suit their conscience. This is the essence of religious liberty, and, as the Buckners point out so eloquently, the reason that the United States constitution defines a government which is neutral toward all religions. Without this neutrality (and its active enforcement), one religion could claim dominance over others. At best, this would marginalize all other sects as second class. At worst, it would disallow the free exercise of any other religion. So the neutrality of government is beneficial to believers and non-believers of all stripes.

Enjoy this book. It is well worth the initial read, and will continue to serve you well on your reference shelf.

A profound, exceptionally well-written book

This is a profound, exceptionally well-written book which explains the background between church/state separation and why church and state need to remain separate for our culture to survive.

I'm a practicing, observant Christian -- and I've led study groups on this book in churches because I've found the information in this book to be so insightful, and the ramifications of a theocratically-imposed state religion to be so frightening that I've insisted this book is a "must-read" for any Christian who wants to understand the importance of maintaining our system of church/state separation.

I'd give this book eight or nine stars if I could!

Secularism protects religious freedom

In Freedom We Trust is an excellent source to understand how secularism protects religious freedom. If you want to guarantee your own religious liberties you must protect everyone else's too. The book offers well cited historical examples of how religions importance in American society has morphed since the country's founding. Read the book and decide if you agree with the authors that religious oppression is immoral.

This expansive and ambitious novel attempts, fairly successfully, to weave an immediate concern for the environment with an incredible and complicated story. The setting is the Brazilian jungle, and the cast of characters could people a circus: a middle-aged Japanese man with a golf ball-sized sphere buzzing in front of his forehead, a three-armed executive from New York, an old man who founds the "science" of featherology, and a boy who is believed to be an angel--to name just a few. These characters converge, each with a separate mission, on the unique "natural" phenomenon known as the Matacao, a huge flat plastic plain in the middle of the jungle. Boundless greed and the unthinking destruction of our environment are as much a part of the story as the delicate relations among the characters. Although the clever parodies of modern society (from yuppies to New Age spiritualism to animal rights groups) are a bit heavy-handed, and at times the plot bogs down in its own intricacies, this is ultimately enjoyable reading.

Taste The Rainbow

I have heard Brazilian children say that whatever passes through the arc of the rainbow becomes its opposite. But what is the opposite of a bird? Or for that matter, a human being? And what then, in the great rainforest, where, in its season, the rain never ceases and the rainbows are myriad?

This epigraph precedes Karen Yamashita's novel, "Through the Arc of the Rain Forest." Yamashita's novel focuses on the journey of Kasumasa Ishimaru as narrated by a ball revolving several inches from Kasumasa's head. The examinination of this piece, however, will revolve (literally and figuratively) on the motif of a rainbow through different parts of the novel, including the epigraph. Yamashita uses rainbows and arcs as symbols relating to consistent negative and positive patterns, imagery, and meanings within the novel.
The first introduction of the rainbow as a symbol occurs when Kasumasa encounters American J.B. Tweep, who is employed within a company Kasumasa holds controlling stock. J.B. chides Kasumasa into searching for more Matacao, which is the material that will create economic profit for Kasumasa's conglomerate. Within their search, J.B. Tweep hides protagonist Kasumaza Ishimaru from his competition. Tweep's undercover agents had been described as hiding themselves "at the arc of every rainbow" (149). The rainbow in this sense takes the meaning of a vast, unending space. The percieved sense of unrest, searching, and mystery contrasts the allusion of a peaceful rainbow. The arc represents an unexplainable plain which can be pilifered for special interest. In this instance, the rainbow does not take the shape of a beautious vision, but rather a vision of greed and deception.
The journey from new to old and back again to new is another presentation of the rainbow as an arc, a curving storyline with a significant purpose. Yamashita explains, "The old forest has returned once again...pursuing the lost perfection of an organism in which digestion and excretion ! were once one and the same." (212) The forest in this setting has been destroyed by extrordinary events. However, the forest continues to grow, to recycle. The theme of recycling and a cyclical pattern echo from this passage. Where a circle is said to have "no start and no end," an allusion is made towards a pattern of infinite possibilities and of rebirth and regeneration.
To give a greater context in the presentation of the rainbow as a symbol, one need not look further than the table of contents. The contents are broken up in six parts: The Beginning, The Developing World, More Development, Loss of Innocence, More Loss, and Return. Through careful examination, the pattern of an arc is presented through the first three parts relating to the setting and inciting incident and the last three parts regarding climax and conclusion. The first parts correlate to the rise of an arc, and the last parts correlate to the fall of the arc. In essence, the plot of the novel is like an arc, a rainbow-like pattern filled with emotional leaps and downfalls, of stunning portrayal and imaginative resolution.
The epigraph ties the novel neatly is discussing the rainbow as a symbol. The epigraph is directed through rumor, question, and pending answer, much like an arc. The breakdown of the epigraph is made to mirror the story. The rumor of Brazilian children within the epigraph relates directly to the rumors spread by the many characters within the early part of the novel, whether the rumor is contrived by the Brazilian people from Kasumasa's ball, J.B. Tweep three arms, or Mane Pena's feather use. The questions arise within the epigraph to symbolize the characters' situation, to find methods of practicality or exploitation of the rumors. In one such case, Kasumasa give his riches to both needy and greedy, many people within the novel question his motives including Kasumasa questioning his own motives. The pending answer within the epigrapgh relates to the ultimate destruction of the rain forest, the f! inal answer to human waste and stupidity.
The rainbow, through a final analysis resonates as a symbol for identity formation. Kasumaza is seen as an Asian American subject, even though his journey takes place in Brazil. In the context of whatever passes through the "rainbow becomes its opposite," Kasumaza symbolizes that choices can not be simplified to a basic premise of either/or, to whether Kasumasa is Asian or Brazilian, that a literary work is Asian American or not. Therefore, a rainbow's own identity can also be seen within the same light: multicolored to escape a single colored dimension; untouchable to resist a concrete ownership or state of being; unending to prevent an imaged start and finish.

Enjoyable, Ambitious Novel

A very enjoyable read. This book reminds me of those strange and meandering novels (like Tom Robbins) except with an environmental bent, but not with the heavy-laden activist tone of early Carl Hiaasen. It is a great book with several interweaving plots and quite a bit of magical realism. Some parts of it are laugh out loud funny.

Yamashita is an interesting writer; while one of the protagonists is Japanese (and this takes place in the Japanese expatriate community in Brazil), this is not necessarily an Asian-American book. I have heard however her say in interviews that she completely identifies herself as an Asian-American author - I wonder if that is pointing to the new globalism/cosmopolitan trend we're seeing nowadays.

It's a fun read regardless of your political or racial proclivities so I would pick it up if you're a fan of Robbins, Pynchon, maybe even David Foster Wallace (lite) and others. It explores interesting ideas in science, religion, and throws in some corporate irresponsibility for good measure. Overall a very memorable book and one of my new favorites.

This novel is a hoot. Yamashita's free-wheeling black comedy satirizes most aspects of post-modern life: media, fads, environment, corporations, televangelists. It's all there in this "Russian novel on crack."

From her perch on a comfortable lounging chair, Amy Candler basked in the
sunshine and gazed out at the shimmering crystal-blue water in the oval
swimming pool. This was very clearly not the community pool where she and
her friends usually congregated. There weren’t any screaming kids
splashing each other, and no one was jumping up and down on the diving
board, yelling like Tarzan. There was no chain-link fence, and no bored
teenage lifeguard was ordering people out of the pool. Best of all, Amy
didn’t have to worry about anyone using the pool as a gigantic toilet.

This pool was surrounded by a stone terrace, and the terrace was
surrounded by rosebushes. The terrace led to a large, modern house, where
there was a bar. Amy knew she could help herself to a soft drink or juice
whenever she wanted one, free of charge. From unseen speakers, her
favorite radio station played the top ten songs of the week at exactly the
right sound level. If she wanted, she could turn it up and not worry about
bothering the neighbors. Up here in Beverly Hills, you couldn’t even see
the home of your next-door neighbor.

An uncle of Tasha and Eric Morgan’s lived in the house. He had left keys
with the Morgans so that they could use the pool while he and his family
were on vacation. What Amy couldn’t understand was why people who had a
house and a pool like this would need
to go away for a vacation. But she was certainly glad they had.

“Summer,” she murmured blissfully.

“Yeah,” Eric sighed.

And Tasha punctuated this with a little moan of pleasure.

Even in Los Angeles, where you could hang out in sunshine practically all
year long, there was something special about summer. It wasn’t just the
weather. Summer meant no school and no homework, and for Amy, it meant her
birthday. In fact, her greatest problem
at that moment was deciding what kind of cake she wanted for the great
event, which was coming up on Saturday. One thing was for sure: It would
have to be a big cake.

“Do they make cakes big enough to serve forty people?” she wondered out
loud. “Maybe I’ll need two cakes. Does that mean I have to blow out two
sets of candles?”

“Yeah, but you’ll get two wishes,” Tasha told her.

Eric pretended to groan. “Do we have to sing ‘Happy Birthday to You
twice?”

Amy giggled in delight. She’d never had such a big birthday party before.
But then, she’d never turned thirteen before. Thirteen. The beginning of
her real teen years.

“Do you feel any different now that you’re thirteen?” she asked Tasha. Her
friend had celebrated her birthday two months earlier.

“I’m not sure,” Tasha said. “Most of the time I think I’m exactly the same
as I was when I was twelve. It’s not like I look any different. But
sometimes I think I feel a little different. More mature.”

“That’s just in your head,” Eric said.

Tasha looked at him scornfully. “That’s where mature feelings are, Eric.
In your head.”

“Yeah, in my head,” Eric chortled. “Not yours. I can guarantee, you are
absolutely no more mature now than you were two months ago.”

“Okay, you guys, cut it out,” Amy said mildly. She was accustomed to
hearing the brother and sister tease each other. As an only child,
sometimes she even envied them. “Eric, did you feel any different on your
thirteenth birthday?”

“That was two years ago,” Eric replied. “I don’t remember. I don’t think
so. I mean, it’s not like anything changes overnight.”

Amy yawned and stretched lazily. She thought she was beginning to change a
little. Nothing major. She was just dimly aware of an achy sensation in
her arms and legs. She wasn’t worried, though. After all, she was going
through puberty, and according to all the articles in all the teen
magazines she read, these were perfectly normal growing pains.

Except that Amy wasn’t a perfectly normal girl. She certainly wasn’t like
any ordinary twelve-year-old on the verge of turning thirteen. For one
thing, she hadn’t been born thirteen years ago. In fact, she hadn’t been
born at all—she’d been genetically engineered. Along with thirteen others,
she’d been designed and created from carefully selected cell samples and
had developed inside a series of test tubes and under microscopes.

She, along with the others, had grown from fetus to infant inside an
incubator. What she called her birthday was the day that Nancy Candler,
scientist and junior member of Project Crescent, rescued the last
remaining experimental unit from the burning lab. The scientists had
intentionally triggered the explosion after learning that the government
agency funding the project wanted to create a master race using the
clones. Nancy and the others felt this was unethical. So they set fire to
the lab to make the agents believe that the clones had all perished. In
reality, the clones had been whisked away and sent to live with adoptive
families around the world. Nancy had taken the infant clone Amy, Number
Seven, home to raise as her own daughter.

Ordinary aches and pains weren’t a common experience for Amy. Her genes
had been manipulated and treated so that she would develop a perfect
physique. She was always healthy.

“Are there really going to be forty people at
your party?” Tasha asked. “Did everyone accept their
invitations?”

“Everyone,” Amy confirmed. “Even Linda Riviera.”

“How come you invited her?” Eric wanted to know. “You don’t even like her.
I don’t like her.”

“I had to invite Linda because I invited Simone Cusack, and Simone is
Linda’s best friend now. And I had to invite Simone because she invited me
to her birthday party. Don’t worry, there are going to be so many people
there, you won’t even have to see Linda.”

Amy was confident of that. This was going to be a real bash, a mix of boys
and girls from the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades at Parkside Middle
School. They were gathering at the home of Dr. David Hopkins, a friend of
Amy and her mother’s, who had kindly donated his beach house for the
party. There would be beach volleyball, a cookout, and dancing on the
patio.

“Have you decided what you’re going to wear?” Amy asked Tasha.

“My pink crop top and black jeans.”

“Perfect,” Amy said.

“What about you?” Tasha asked. “Did you get something new?”

Amy nodded. “It’ll be a surprise.” She couldn’t help smiling as she
thought about the crisp white halter sundress, still covered in the
plastic from the shop and hanging in her closet. It was so cool, and it
fit perfectly.

“I’ve got a surprise too,” Eric announced.

Amy’s eyes narrowed suspiciously. “This isn’t a costume party, Eric.”

“It’s not that kind of surprise,” he assured her. “I think you’ll like
it.” He was looking very confident and very pleased with himself, and Amy
just hoped that the surprise wasn’t going to be anything too embarrassing.
Not that Eric would ever try to embarrass her on purpose. He wouldn’t do
anything to spoil her party.

And there wouldn’t be any letdown after the great event. The very next
day, she was leaving with her mother and Dr. Dave for the Grand Canyon,
where they would spend ten days hiking and camping.

Eric and Tasha, too, were heading out of L.A. a couple of days after her
party. At that very moment, Eric was reading about their destination from
a pamphlet titled “Welcome to Camp Riverbend.”

“Hey, Tasha, it says here there’s a weekly dance for campers over the age
of twelve from both camps. If you give me some money, I’ll bribe another
counselor to dance with you.”

“No thanks,” Tasha retorted. “And don’t forget, Eric, you’re just a junior
counselor, not a real one.”

Eric was ready with a comeback. “Better to be a junior counselor than an
ordinary camper.”

“Stop it, Eric,” Amy said automatically. She knew very well that Tasha
wasn’t thrilled at the prospect of going off to summer camp. She turned to
Tasha with a sympathetic expression. “Are you absolutely, positively sure
you can’t get out of this?”

“I’ve tried,” Tasha told her. “But my parents are being really obnoxious.
My mother says she doesn’t want me hanging around doing nothing, and my
father thinks I need more exercise.” She tried to sound casually annoyed,
but there was a slight tremor in her voice and Amy knew why. They’d talked
about this many times before. Tasha was worried that all the other girls
at the camp would be athletic types, which she definitely wasn’t. She was
afraid she’d feel out of place at Camp Riverbend and that the others would
make fun of her. Having her brother across the lake at the boys’ camp
wasn’t any comfort to her.

Personally, Amy thought it was mean of Tasha’s parents to make her go. It
was awful the way parents tried to run kids’ lives sometimes. And the kids
couldn’t really fight back. Amy’s own mother used to give her a lot of
unwanted advice, but lately she’d been letting Amy make more of her own
decisions, and Amy wa...

A Great Replica Book, But Not The Best One!

I've read 16 out of the 18 Replica books out, and I'm sad to say that this one isn't one of my favorites, but it is still very good. On the morning of her birthday, Amy Candler, who is a clone, wakes up to find out that she looks like she is in her twenties. Amy's mother, Nancy, and Dr. Hopkins, her mom's boyfriend, tell Amy that someone slipped a gene in Amy's body that would make her look like she was in her twenties on the day of her thirteenth birthday. Nancy, not wanting Amy's secret to slip out, tells her that she will not be able to attend the party. She makes up a lie to tell Amy's friends (that Amy's appendix was taken out) so that her friends won't ask many questions. But Eric is determined to find out the truth. Meanwhile, Amy is taken to a special hospital room while she is tested and poked with needles to see how they can get rid of the gene so she can get back to normal. Amy hates the hospital, so one night, she slips out into the darkness of night and goes to a homeless shelter for kids called Sanctuary. There, Amy volunteers to help at the shelter. You'll have to find out the rest by reading the book!
Now for my opinion on the book. I liked it, but some parts were extremely unrealistic. Like, how Amy's mother wasn't even mad that Amy ran away. Plus, who in their right mind would run away when mad scientists are looking for her? As I said before, this wasn't my favorite Replica book. My favorite is #4, Perfect Girls. Nevertheless, I urge you to read this book, especially if you're a Replica fan like me!

Amy's turned thirteen - and she has some real growing pains!

In just a few days, Amy Candler will be turning thirteen, and she's psyched. She's planned a huge party on the beach, and she can't wait for the day when she wakes up and will finally be a teenager. But the surprise that awaits Amy on her thirteenth birthday is anything but pleasant. Because overnight Amy has gone from twelve to twenty-five! Her mother's friend Dr. Dave, who also worked on Project Crescent, finds nothing wrong with her - but he insists that she stay in a hospital until he can reverse her overnight aging. But after a couple of days in the hospital, Amy is bored, so like the teenager she is inside, she acts impulsively - and runs away. Soon, she becomes involved with a shelter for runaways and a lost little girl that becomes the center of an international incident. And not only that, but she wonders if the "organization" may be after her once again. Will Amy EVER be herself again - or has she missed out on her teenage years for good? Read to find out. I reccomend this book to all Replica fans.

The BIG day....................

It almost Amy's Birthday,and she's psyched!she's had some strange growing pains lately,but she doesn't think much of it,Hey,even clones get aches and pains sometime,right?Well,on her birthday Amy's growing pains well,have taken on large perportians....Now due to a long forgotten chip placed in her back in Project Cresent,Amy is trapped in the body of a 25 year-old....Dr.Hopkins rushes her to a private room in a hospital where he can run tests to find the chip so Amy can go back to normal.....But after a while Amy's had it!She's sck of staying in bed in the same room,without any contact with her friends,so she runs away.She meets a young boy on the street and he takesher to a place called The Sanctuary,where homeless children go,but the place isn't exactly legal,and the guy in charge isn't exactly sane either...
My opinion: Great book,but not the Best....I'd say 4&1/2 stars.....I think this is a must-buy for replica fans!!!!

About the Author
Steve Hallett is an associate professor in the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology at Purdue University. His previous appointments include McGill University, Canada, and the University of Queensland, Australia.

John Wright is a journalist specializing in energy and environmental issues with over twenty-five years of experience. He is currently the Latin America news editor for Energy News Today, but has also worked for Knight-Ridder, Dow Jones, and the Associated Press. He is the author of The Obama Haters.

definitely worth reading

This book is well-written, funny, and scary. The authors do a great job showing how oil has made the modern world possible and argue convincingly that we are nearing the end of cheap readily available oil. The evidence for both of these conclusions seems overwhelming. The authors suggest (reasonably in my opinion) that we are ill-prepared for the changes that will accompany the loss of this critical fuel and they outline steps we could take to ease the transition to a life without oil. I hope that many people read this book.

Best book I have EVER read.

I am an avid reader, as one would probably have to be to find this gem, and it changed the way I think about the future and our efforts for change. If every person read this book we would have a much more educated and thoughtful population. It might not truly be the best book I have ever read, but it is certainly the best nonfiction book I have ever read.

The core of this book is a set of predictions regarding how various nations will fare when cheap fossil fuels are no longer available. These dire predictions are supposed to motivate us to take whatever steps we can today to avoid disaster tomorrow. The authors claim that the best we can hope for is to engineer a 'soft landing' within what they view as the inevitable (partial) collapse of the societal and economic systems that petroleum built during the 20th century.

I think that a better approach for this book would have been to describe a range of possible future economic and environmental scenarios, attach a probability to each scenario, and provide a justification for each probability. The advantage of this approach is that it would have allowed the authors to explicitly describe, and then attack, the faulty assumptions underlying many of the economic and environmental predictions we hear all too often from government and industry leaders.

Deep insights at Amazon Books

Hargittai is a true insider in the world of high level science. This book reveals the names and careers of people who have contributed significantly to our lives and to the course of history during the past 70 years. Some of them are well known figures, some of them not really known to the public. Hargittai is very good at revealing little known but illuminating details about all of them. He has additional information for even well known figures such as Leo Szilard and James Watson. He has personally met and interviewed most of the people in the book, giving his writing an added zip, an extra soupçon of flavor.

This is a must read for anyone interested in science and technology.

excellent book for young people interested in science

I have read most of Istvan Hargittai's books, and I can attest that they are highly informative, readable, and enjoyable. Especially nowadays, when in America and Europe (but not in China, India, and several South-Eastern Asian countries) the young generation prefers the easier paths of legal and/or business careers, Hargittai's books should be recommended reading to high-school youngsters.
The present book spans in 15 chapters a wide range of scientific topics (illustrated by the corresponding scientists): physics (Teller, Szilard), crystallography (Shechtman), astrophysics (Gamov), environmental science (Rowland), conducting polymers (Heeger, McDiarmid, Shirakawa), chemistry (Pauling, Bartlett, Furka), medicine (Mansfield, Lauterbur), biochemistry (Yalow, Elion, Hitchings, Mullis), and biology (Watson). Several of these scientists were awarded Nobel Prizes.
In his foreword, Carl Djerassi deplores the inclusion of Kari Mullis, not because his Nobel Prize in Chemistry was undeserved, but because (i) due to his erratic behavior, he is not a role model, and (ii) circumstances downplayed outstanding contributions to the discovery/invention of the polymerase chain reaction by others, who were not mentioned by Mullis in his publications.
Also in other cases essential contributions went unrewarded by the Nobel Committee, and such a case is mentioned for the 2003 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, when Damadian's name could have been the third laureate along with Mansfield and Lauterbur.
Hargittai's foresight is evident from the inclusion of the chapter on quasicrystals, as the 2011 Nobel Prize for Chemistry was awarded to Shechtman, who made a serendipitous observation and dared to publish his results for which he was first ridiculed. Another instance of scientists risking their reputation is exemplified by McDiarmid and Heeger, a chemist and a physicist, who together with Shirakawa stuck out their necks betting on the possibility of making electrically-conducting polymers that behave like organic metals.
An attractive feature of this book consists in the photographs accompanying each chapter, most of which were taken by Istvan Hargittai during personal encounters.
In conclusion, this book is highly recommended for the general public, and especially for young persons with an inclination towards science.

The Importance of Scientists

In the interest of full disclosure I must say I have known Hargittai, the author of Drive and Curiosity, for several years in person, and for a much longer time through his books and scientific articles. I admire his breadth of knowledge and scientific accomplishments, and to that extent the reader of this review can hold me to account for objectivity. On the other hand familiarity with his personality, interests, and cultural and scientific background brings into play a certain kind of objectivity, not otherwise obtainable, of some importance to the analysis of this particular written work.
Fortunately the book has a well recognized goal of imparting to the reader that "feeling" for what is great science and what are the circumstances wherein it is carried out. It is written in the clean efficient style characteristic of successful storytelling. Science is a many sided activity and a well rounded feeling for it is best obtained by hearing of it from its many different points of view. Each of the stories told in separate chapters have been carefully and wisely chosen to reflect a particular aspect of science and the personality and circumstances in which that aspect could be fulfilled. Just as a diamond is judged by the reflection of its several facets, the well cut chapters of this book analogously reflect the remarkable jewel that is the full scientific enterprise. Science arises from the professions of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, etcetera. Practically all the aspects of great science, and the great types of personality doing the science are necessarily represented in the story telling of this book. It is most impressive, and fitting that the stage for these scientific stories is set for the reader by preliminary commentary by extraordinary scientists and science writers of the stature of Kroto, Curl, and Djerassi, Nobel Laureates each & all. That "feeling" for science, which is so elusive and is yet so important for intellectual life in general, and for intelligent action in a democracy in particular, is hinted at from the commentary. And that "feeling" for science, lies within grasp obtainable from the storytelling laid out by a master of the craft.

Reinventing the Sublime looks at the return of the sublime in postmodernity, and at intimations of a ‘post-Romantic’ sublime in Romanticism itself. The sublime is explored as a discourse of ‘invention’ – taking the Latin meaning of to ‘come upon’, ‘find’, ‘discover’ – that involves an encounter with the new, the unregulated and the surprising. Lyotard and Žižek, among others, have reconfigured the sublime for postmodernity by exceeding the subject-centred discourse of Romantic aesthetics, and promoting not a sublime of the subject, but of the unpresentable, the ‘Real’, the unknown, the other. Reinventing the Sublime examines 18th-century, Romantic, modernist and postmodern ‘inventions’ of the sublime alongside contemporary critical accounts of the relationship of sublimity to subjectivity, aesthetics, politics and history, including ‘9/11’. It reads Burke and Kant alongside postmodern discourses on the sublime, and Wordsworth, De Quincey and Mary Shelley in relation to temporality and materiality in Romanticism, and considers ‘modernist’ inflections of the sublime in T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf and Djuna Barnes in relation to the themes of disjunction and excess in modernity. The author examines the postmodern revisiting of the sublime in Thomas Pynchon, D.M. Thomas and Toni Morrison, and draws on Lyotard’s reading of the sublime as an aesthetic of the avant-garde and as a singular and disruptive ‘event’, to argue that the sublime in its postmodern and contemporary forms encodes an anxious but affirmative relationship to the ironies of temporality and history. Reinventing the Sublime focuses on the endurance of the sublime in contemporary thinking, and on the way that the sublime can be read as a figure of the relationship of representation to temporality itself.
