From the Inside Flap
Only two men on earth have the insider knowledge about what really happened at the highest levels of our government and military from September 11, 2001, through the fall of Saddam Hussein's notorious dictatorship in Iraq.

One of these men is Army General Tommy Franks. The other is Marine Corps General Mike "Rifle" DeLong, Franks's deputy.

General DeLong was Donald Rumsfeld's "answer man" during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He assembled and held together the international coalitions for the War on Terror and the war against Saddam Hussein. And while Franks was in the field, former Marine combat pilot DeLong ran CentCom, the nerve center of both wars.

In Inside CentCom, you'll learn what only insiders have known up to now:

* How President Bush had a chance to take out Saddam and his sons before the war-and why he chose not to
* How the idea of invading Iraq came up as early as September 11, 2001
* The likely hiding place of Saddam's weapons of mass destruction-yes, they do exist
* Al-Qaeda and Saddam: why CentCom believes they are co-conspirators
* Why CentCom knew in advance that the United Nations would never approve military action against Iraq-and why the war was justified
* Why chaos in Iraq was greater than predicted-and the mistakes that contributed to it
* The failure of Ahmad Chalabi's alleged Iraqi "freedom fighters" as American allies

Inside CentCom takes you inside the center of American defense intelligence and war planning for the greater Middle East. You'll go behind the scenes on the stealth operations leading up to the Afghan and Iraq wars, and then read the after-action report from today's Iraq. This is an unmissable book about the wars we have already won-the first steps in winning the War on Terror.

From the Back Cover
"Mike 'Rifle' DeLong was the best deputy commander I could have imagined. Seasoned in Vietnam as a young helicopter pilot, he never forgot the lessons of war: loyalty, focus, commitment to mission and the troops. Rifle was 'Joint' to the core. He had the respect of all who served with him. A manager and a leader of the highest caliber, I am proud to call him a friend."
-General Tommy H. Franks, former commander of CentCom

"General DeLong did an outstanding job on General Tommy Franks's behalf in dealing with Secretary Rumsfeld, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Richard Myers, and President Bush himself. General DeLong was also the 'go-to' guy for the sixty-plus countries that participated in the Afghanistan and Iraq campaigns. This is truly an insider's view of these history-making events."
-General Joseph Hoar, USMC (retired), former commander of CentCom

"General Tommy Franks and General Mike DeLong were masters at war fighting, managing the sensitive relationships in the region, and holding together the complex coalition put in place to deal with the significant threats that faced us. General DeLong was the unsung hero of these efforts. His savvy, intellect, common sense, professional competence, and honesty come through in this book, and give us a rare insight into critical events that have shaped our course at the beginning of this troubled century."
-General Tony Zinni, USMC (retired), former commander of CentCom

"I can't think of a finer Marine or a finer person who serves anywhere in this armed forces."
-General John Abizaid, current commander of CentCom

"From the point of the bayonet to the crisis of the conference room, General DeLong has spent a lifetime serving his country in war and peace, in combat and in preparation. His experience from Mogadishu to Tampa, from fighting terrorists to dealing with Washington (maybe even more terrifying for a military man) gives him a unique vantage point from which to help his fellow Americans understand the world they live in and the challenges they face."
-Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House

An insider's look at the battles for Afghanistan and Iraq
By Dan J
Coming out shortly after the release of Tommy Frank's new book, American Soldier, Inside CentCom is written by the only other man not in the military that knows what really went on during the campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq, former deputy commander of CentCom, Lt. General Micheal "Rifle" DeLong.

General DeLong sets out in his book to tell nothing but the truth about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq unlike so many other books coming out today that so clearly have agendas. DeLong describes in great detail special operations missions that helped bring down the Taliban in Afghanistan, including the Northern Alliance's assault on Mazar-e-Sharif. He describes the coalitions lightning advance towards Baghdad in Operation Iraqi Freedom and the joint warfare that made that campaign so successful.

He also has many new revelations in this book. I won't go into them as they are all mentioned in the editorial review and are described in greater detail in the book. Buy and read this book right after reading "American Soldier" to give yourself a much understanding of the battles in the War on Terror we have already won and what we still face.

"Rifle" Delongs command as written with Noah Lukeman provides readers with a powerful story of what went on behind the scenes of the wars. This non-fiction book read's like a best selling Tom Clancy novel. It places the reader right in the middle of the action that the news channels never broadcasted, much less knew about. Thank you
By Xavia Publishing
Thank you for writing a book that speaks straight out to the American people. No matter their class, history, background or standing in life this book is meant for us.

At times it seems that the media is set out to create different kinds of mindsets for the different classes of people that America holds. Thank you for including everyone and for me personally, showing that in Iraq there are those who will work with the U.S. and the Coalition, and those who will fight and die for their own freedom and all that it encompasses.

Dog in the Manger: An Eli Paxton Mystery (Eli Paxton Mysteries), by Mike Resnick

A dog is missing. Not just any dog. The number one Weimaraner in the country and current Westminster winner.

Down-on-his-luck private eye Eli Paxton is hired to find him. Not exactly an elite assignment, but better than nothing. Maybe it will help him pay his rent. It turns out to be anything but a routine case. People start dying in mysterious ways, a cargo plane goes missing, and someone is taking shots at him. It makes no sense. Even a top show dog isn't worth that much.

Now the hunt is on. Paxton needs to find this dog to save his own skin. The trail leads to Arizona, then Mexico, and finally back to his hometown of Cincinnati-- where he finds the startling solution.

With a new introduction by the author and including the bonus short story "Even Butterflies Can Sting."

Great mystery, a bit quirky
By col2910
Another author here who I have vaguely heard of before, but as he is better known for his numerous science fiction novels have never tried. This mystery was originally published back in the mid-90’s and has been given a new lease of life by Seventh Street Books. Resnick has written two more with Eli Paxton as the main focus. The second – The Trojan Colt was released last June and the third – Cat on a Cold Tin Roof will be published in August of this year.

Unlike a few other PI novels I have read, Eli Paxton has few personal issues dogging him. He’s well adjusted, fosters decent working relationships with the police and his competition. He has an interesting backstory which establishes him as an honest, conscientious investigator; unafraid of doing the right thing and without the obligatory bottle of JD in his bottom desk drawer. In his 40’s, single, overweight and balding and without a multitude of martial arts belts and hand to hand combat skills. Jack Reacher he isn’t and for all his ordinariness, he rather likeable and more importantly for me, believable.

Paxton is hired to investigate the disappearance of a show-winning Weimaraner dog; Baroness, by the show handler, who is himself being sued by the dog’s owner for its disappearance. The dog was due to have been shipped back to its owner on a small internal flight from Cincinnati to Arizona but never arrived. Paxton makes inquiries at the freight handling operation and soon discovers that the mystery itself is linked to the flight……..employees at the company are transferred, a couple die in “accidents” and when visiting the dog’s owner to make inquiries at the other end of the chain, someone takes some pot shots at him.

Our missing dog case has morphed into someone somewhat larger and more dangerous for Paxton to unravel.

Only about 190 pages long, so this was a fairly quick read, but without the author sacrificing the development of the main characters within the book. Our settings for the mystery jump around and we enjoy a bit of Arizona and Mexico in addition to Paxton’s Cincinnati base. We have an involvement with the local police, in addition to some national agencies, as well as Mexican law enforcement and we get to learn a little bit about the world of dog breeders and dog showing and judging. Hmm….what a strange lot they are.

Lots to like and enjoy here and I’m looking forward to the second in the series sometime soon.

4 from 5

Thanks to Seventh Street Books for my copy of this.

Roller Coaster of a Book
By Catarina
Eli Paxton comes across as a typical old-fashioned hardboiled detective, living from case to case, barely able to pay his phone bill. He is all that, but a 1990s version. Author Mike Resnick wrote this novel in the 90s, but it has only recently been released. Detective Paxton is a Cincinnati native, and along with his obsession with the Cincinnati Reds baseball team, the setting provides the atmosphere of a small city on a big river, where everyone does not know everyone, but they know someone who does.
Paxton has been hired to solve what appears to be a small crime. A dog trainer with a prima donna attitude wants him to find a lost dog, but not just any dog. Baroness is a number one Weimaraner and Westminster dog show winner. Somehow the dog has disappeared between Cincinnati and Arizona, where her owner awaits her return home, and the assistant who drove the dog to the airport has died in a tragic car accident.
There is plenty of action as Paxton begins the mundane investigative tasks of interviewing employees of the kennel, employees of the shipping company responsible for transporting the dog and the puddle-jumper airline that flies to smaller towns in the Southwest. But the case becomes much more serious, and dangerous, when witnesses either cannot be located or turn up dead. Paxton travels from Cincinnati to Arizona, to Mexico and back to Cincinnati, where the trail of the lost dog leads to a web of crime involving a leading citizen of the city.
Resnick writes in a style that moves the reader along from one tense situation to another. He has created a character who has the uncanny ability to land on his feet and maneuver his way out of the most harrowing situations. But he refuses to take life too seriously, reminding a police official that "Nobody is ever late at six thirty in the morning."
Dog in the Manger is a roller coaster of a novel. I look forward to the next Eli Paxton mystery.

I love mysteries, and this a good one. It helps if you like dogs and the descriptions about the dog show world are spot on. The detective is likeable, sort of down on his luck kind of guy. All in all an enjoyable read.

From Publishers Weekly
Latina writer Benitez begins her excellent debut novel with a painful event--the wait for a drowned body to float to shore--and works backwards, retracing the myriad, seemingly insignificant steps that led to the character's death. As in Like Water for Chocolate , this novel sympathetically explores the lives of Mexican women caught in a mystical, fatalistic world. Chayo, a flower seller, and her sister Marta, a chambermaid, live in a poverty-stricken village by the sea. When 15-year-old Marta is raped and becomes pregnant, seemingly barren Chayo and her husband, Candelario, agree to take the child. Soon after, however, Chayo discovers that she too is expectant and reneges on the promise. Livid, Marta arranges with el brujo , the witch doctor, to put a curse on her sister's child. Both women bear sons, and a remorseful Marta tells her sister about the curse, which she claims to have had removed by la curandera , the healer. But when Chayo's son almost dies after being bitten by fire ants, the sisters' relationship once more deteriorates and, inexorably, the tragedy presaged in the book's opening chapter comes to pass. Benitez's unsparing vision into the stark realities of village residents' lives offers a poignant counterpoint to superficial vacation snapshots of Mexico.

From School Library Journal
YA-In the small Mexican town of Santiago, childless Chayo and her husband find their prayers answered when they agree to adopt the unborn child of Marta, Chayo's sister. When Chayo becomes pregnant and they change their mind about adoption, Marta has a witch doctor put a curse on Chayo's unborn baby, setting in motion a series of tragic events. Characters, presented individually by the author and then woven together by plot, attach themselves to readers' sensibilities, and lull them into believing in the goodness of life in this sleepy seaside community. However, all this cultural richness is poised for tragedy when divine retribution takes over.
Ginny Ryder, Lee High School, Fairfax County, VA

From Library Journal
This emotionally gripping, though flawed first novel tells a story of life and death in the Mexican village of Santiago. When the infertile Chayo unexpectedly conceives, she and her husband renege on their promise to raise her sister's unwanted child as their own, setting in motion a chain of events that ultimately result in tragedy. The author displays an exceptionally keen sense of detail and creates interesting people whose very different lives lend variety to the narrative. However, the book suffers from an abundance of underdeveloped characters and story lines, which at times render it rather unsatisfactory. The inclusion of an apparently supernatural element works potently at a visual level but makes no substantive contribution to the novel and may prompt readers to wonder if Benitez is simply hopping on the bandwagon of Magical Realism. Recommended for libraries with a strong interest in Latino literature.

THE DISQUIETING TRUTH
By RR
I would like to see several of the previous reviewers address the following:

-- In 1969, a Col. MacArthur testified to Congress, requesting $10 million for the Pentagon to develop, WITHIN 10 YEARS, synthetic viruses that would be "refractory" (i.e., resistant) to the human immunological system. Congress granted the monies. Much of the resulting work was carried out at Fort Dietrich, Maryland, the Army's main bio-warfare laboratory.

-- Within several years virologists began describing in the medical journals their experiments with new laboratory developed viruses being tested on cattle, who began to exhibit the symptoms of a "slow, wasting disease."

-- Later, some of these same gov't. researchers proposed, since human experimentation was "considered unethical," introducing these new

viruses covertly by combining them with other experimental drugs for human testing.

-- Next, the WHO conducted the largest innoculation campaign in history in Africa -- which now has the highest incidence of HIV in the world.

-- Then, the NIH conducted the voluntary innoculation campaigns for Hepatitus among the gay communities in New York and San Francisco.

-- Within a year, circa 1979-1980, the first cases of the strange new cancer-like disease started to appear almost simultaneously in the gay communities in those two areas (such simultaneous geographic diversity for the start of a new disease is impossible in nature).

--Then, in the early 1980's, when independent researchers saw the annual gov't. published percentage of population/infection ratio rising dramatically each year in these two test groups (with a trend line that appeared to be heading toward 100%) and started questioning this, the gov't. STOPPED PUBLISHING THE DATA.

--And, to put this in its proper political context, it was the same time frame as the Right and the Religious Right were coming into national political power with the election of 1980, and their overwhelming hatred of gays and the new sexual freedom that had developed in the 1960's and 1970's.

Read this and the author's previous book, "Aids and the Doctors of Death" along with David Horowitz's books; there is a great deal more chilling evidence to show how the new bio-technology has enabled the far right to pursue their fascistic ends much more secretly and efficiently than their German Nazi counterparts.

Does the Sea Remember
By Sherie
I enjoyed the contents of the Benetiz compilation of stories. Each had a full meaning and connects to each reader through feelings of pain, loss, guilt, longing and so much more. Benitez entitles the story very well, because even though all the stories are separate, they intertwine in this town, Santiago, which is close by the sea. It relates to a sailors own tales, and even though the sea is rough and forceful at times, it holds many stories full of love and heartache. Remedios is part of the sea and in tune with nature so much that she knows the troubles of every one. The main focus shifted every so often, but in general I think Benitez wanted to say that we can bury or throw away our painful pasts, but anyday, it may be dragged back to us by the foaming sea currents. Our pasts will either drag us down, or kill us, it is what we do for the future that ensures whether it is true or not. And making the right choices isn't always the easiest thing to do when life doesn't have many options for a tourist town like Santiago. Even the town itself is meaningful. It contains many lives that nonetheless are dreamful and hopeful, but not changing as much as they would like.

It is a very gripping book and made me want to keep reading, and comeing from a 15 year old girl who has mny other things to be doing besides reading a novel, that is a big complement. I would recomend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about life in the world around them.

Starship: Pirate, by Michael D. Resnick

The date is 1967 of the Galactic Era, almost three thousand years from now. The Republic, created by the human race but not yet dominated by it, is in the midst of an all-out war with the Teroni Federation. After his latest exploit saved millions of lives but embarrassed his superiors, Captain Wilson Cole, a man with a reputation for exceeding orders but getting results, found himself the victim of the media feeding frenzy, a political scapegoat despite years of dedicated military service. Faced with a court martial, he was rescued by the loyal crew of his ship, the Theodore Roosevelt. Now branded mutineers, the crew of the Teddy R. has quit the Republic, never to return.

Seeking to find a new life for themselves, Wilson Cole and comrades remake the Teddy R. as a pirate ship and set sail for the lawless Inner Frontier. Here, powerful warlords, cut-throat pirates, and struggling colonies compete for survival in a game where you rarely get a second chance to learn the rules.

But military discipline is poor preparation for a life of pillaging and plundering, and Cole's principles naturally limit his targets. Seeking an education on the nature of piracy, Cole hunts more knowledgeable players. Enter the beautiful but deadly Valkyrie, Val for short, and the enigmatic alien fence known as David Copperfield. But hanging over everything is the fearsome alien pirate — the Hammerhead Shark.

With Starship: Pirate, five-time Hugo winner Mike Resnick continues the story begun in his very first military SF. Will the galaxy ever be the same?

This second book in the Starship series includes diagrams of the Teddy R., plus rules for two Starship board games.

From Publishers Weekly
One of the characters in this sequel to Starship: Mutiny (2005) asks, "Whatever happened to heroes who didn't think everything through, but just walked in with weapons blazing?" The answer is "They're buried in graveyards all across the galaxy." This sums up nicely Hugo-winner Resnick's approach to military SF, which isn't so much about fighting and hardware as it is about strategy and leadership. Having busted their commander, Wilson Cole, out of the brig for disobeying orders that would have cost millions of lives, the crew of the starship Theodore Roosevelt find themselves on the run from their own fleet. The plan? Hoist the Jolly Roger! Since Captain Cole is a moral man, he must figure out a way to practice piracy without actually harming anyone—at least, anyone who doesn't have it coming. As he and the Teddy R. stumble their way through Piracy for Dummies, they make new enemies and find new allies that make the difference between real pirates and military professionals all the more apparent. Readers craving intelligent, character-driven SF need look no further. (Dec.)

A Better Sequel
By John A Lee III
I liked Resnick's STARSHIP: MUTINY but I like this book much better. There was less frustration as I read it. I think this is because of the situation the hero finds himself in.

In the last book, Cole Wilson demonstrated himself to be extremely capable as a starship officer. He was so capable that he had a habit of showing up his superiors. As a result, he was exiled to an area where it was not expected that he would see much action. When action did threaten, he again made the right choices, going against the grain and showing up his commander. The result it that he saved about 5 million people and went on trial for mutiny. As the book concludes, his crew has broken him out of the brig and run off with him. They have some idea of becoming pirates.

That's where this book begins and there is a problem. These people have turned pirate because they have nothing else to do. Even so, they are the "good" guys. They don't want to attack and kill innocents. They hit upon the idea of only raiding other pirates but that two has its problems. Nobody is properly trained in the art of piracy, people get killed; the return on investment is very low.

They come up with some help in the form of an alien fencer of stolen goods with a soft spot for David Copperfield and a "pirate queen" who has been duped out of her ship. As they try to help her in getting it back, they learn that piracy is not all it is cracked up to be.

This is a fast paced adventure. There is nothing stunning about it; it just holds the attention and provides entertainment. That's fine with me.

Good Space Opera Yarn
By John Matlock
Second in the Starship series (Starship: Mutiny was the first), this is a blasters blazing space opera filled with all kinds of moral dilemas -- for instance, how do you become a pirate but not hurt anyone who in your judgment doesn't deserve to be hurt. After all, Captain Wilson Cole is a save the universe type, not a true pirate out to get everything he can for himself.

Enter beautiful but deadly Valkyrie, and the strange alien known as David Copperfield (will they still be reading that in 3,000 years), and of course there's the real pirate king.

Is this book, like David Copperfield obviously will, going to be around as revered literature in 3,000 years - not likely. Is it a fun read for a cold evening or an airplane ride.

fabulous space opera
By A Customer
Three millennia in the future the Republic is at war with the Teroni Federation and the commander of the Teddy R is one of the Republic's most decorated officers. His actions saved five million people but he exceeded his orders and was awaiting a court martial when his crew broke him out of jail and escaped on the Teddy R to the inner frontier. Wilson Cole and his crew are going to become moral pirates only stealing from other pirates.

On his first foray into piracy he steals a fortune in diamonds and jewelry but when he goes to fence it David Copperfield only offers him a pittance of what it is worth. He "sells them back to the insurance company" but when he tries to do the same stunt with the jewels he is recognized and his visage is broadcast to the Republic. On a frontier planet, he meets the pirate Val, a pirate whose ship was stolen by Hammerhead Shark. She wants it back and Cole makes a deal with her. If she teaches him the ins and outs of piracy, he will help her get her ship back. He finds her ship as it is being chased by three other ships by because Hammerhead Shark raided another pirate's headquarters, killing that pirate's minions, destroying his estate and merchandise. Cole has to figure out a way to deal with both pirates without destroying Val's ship or getting himself killed.

There is so much action in this fabulous space opera that readers will find themselves caught on a roller coaster ride they can't leave. The hero is a decent and honorable man who got sold out by the Republic and he knows he can never return there. He feels for the men who left their families behind to join him in exile but he finds piracy morally repugnant yet he doesn't know what to do until Copperfield gives him an idea. Mike Resnick is a brilliant storyteller who never disappoints his fans.

The People's Advocate: The Life and Legal History of America's Most Fearless Public Interest Lawyer, by Daniel Sheehan

The People's Advocate is the autobiography of American Constitutional Trial Attorney Daniel Sheehan. Sheehan traces his personal journey from his working-class roots through Harvard Law School and his initial career in private practice. His early disenchantment led to his return for further study at Harvard Divinity School, and rethinking the nature of his career. Eventually his role as President and Chief Trial Counselor for the famous Washington, D.C.-based Christic Institute would help define his role as America's preeminent cause lawyer.

In The People's Advocate, Sheehan details "the inside story" of over a dozen historically significant American legal cases of the 20th Century, all of which he litigated. The remarkable cases covered in the book include both The Pentagon Papers Case in 1971 and The Watergate Burglary Case in 1973. In addition, Sheehan served as the Chief Attorney on The Karen Silkwood Case in 1976, which additionally revealed the C.I.A.'s Israeli Desk had been smuggling 98% bomb-grade plutonium to the State of Israel and to Iran. In 1984, he was the Chief Trial Counsel on The American Sanctuary Movement Case, establishing the right of American church workers to provide assistance to Central American political refugees fleeing Guatemalan and Salvadorian "death squads." His involvement with the sanctuary movement ultimately led to Sheehan's famous Iran/Contra Federal Civil Racketeering Case against the Reagan/Bush Administration, which he investigated, initiated, filed, and then litigated. The resulting "Iran/Contra Scandal" nearly brought down that Administration, leading Congress to consider the impeachment over a dozen of the top-ranking officials of the Reagan/Bush Administration.

The People's Advocate is the "real story" of these and many other historic American cases, told from the unique point of view of a central lawyer.

Review
"It turns out that a brilliant and aggressive trial lawyer who is an ardent defender of constitutional rights and civil liberties - truly a "People's Advocate" - is also a wonderful storyteller!  Danny Sheehan's recounting of his battles against wrong-doing, both in the courtroom and behind-the-scenes, is never less than enthralling to read.  Most importantly, his book provides essential context for understanding the dangerous undermining of our civil liberties all Americans face today."

6 Stars on Substance, a Revolutionary Illumination
By Robert David STEELE Vivas
This is a book for smart people who care about the Constitution, the Republic, and America the Beautiful -- the America of good people with big hearts and strong souls who do the best they can while trapped amidst a complex of corrupt systems that now include most labor unions, most non-profits, and most religions -- all the safety nets are gone. It is not an easy read but it could be the most important book you could read right now, as we prepare for the 2014-2020 civil war between the 99% and the 1%. For a sense of where I see Danny Sheehan in modern US history, see my review of Arsonist: The Most Dangerous Man in America. Danny Sheehan's is to the second American revolution as James Otis was to the Founding Fathers. The 1% and their political bi-opoly (the best of the servant class in the eyes of the 1%) are the target for a massive apolitical cross-cultural uprising rooted in natural law, social justice, and common sense.

The book cannot be fully appreciated without first understanding that the author has been a major player in every fundamental Constitutional case having to do with public agency -- the sovereignty of the public versus the assumption by the "government" that it has inherent powers once reserved for kings, and that the citizens "donate" (abdicate) their powers once they "elect" said government. I highly recommend Wikipedia's biography on Daniel_Sheehan_(attorney). This -- or the timeline below -- is what should have opened the book in the first place. I take the trouble to do this because the value of this book lies with the next generation, the generation now in college and graduate school (or unemployed and unOccupied), not in the generation that rose with Danny and failed to beat down New York money, Texas energy, and the Nazi hydra combined with elite embrace of drugs, money laundering, and pedophilia, among other high crimes against the Republic.

It took me a full reading to appreciate the page 3 statement that this is the story of a generation, the JFK generation fighting the national security state mentality of the WWII generation (good people) that allowed its government to be hijacked by bad people. I totally share with the author the view that the assassination of JFK closed the door on the socio-economic and ideo-cultural reforms being advanced in the 1960's.

SIDENOTE: I have reviewed most of the books on JFK and where I differ with Danny is in not blaming the excathedra CIA "enterprise" for the assassination it carried out, but rather the combination of Texas energy, New York money, and Italian crime that came together to snuff out the greatest leader of the conscious world. George Bush Senior was in Dallas, working for the "enterprise," and I earnestly pray that he and Howard Hunt will one day appear before a Truth & Reconciliation Commission. See among others:

JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters
Someone Would Have Talked
Dark Legacy

Two elements of the personal introduction I find riveting. First is his account of how he discovered first hand the corruption of the average US Senator, and the second his his quote, on page 60, of Henry Kissinger telling his Harvard class that the US is "authorized to lie, cheat, steal, and kill to gain access to the strategic raw materials that below to other nations..." Kissinger never changed -- years later, while in the White House, it is now known that he said, to general laughter, "the illegal we do immediately, the unconstitutional takes a little longer."

The author accomplished more by the time he was 30 than most do in a lifetime. I note with interest that his first encounter with illegal wiretapping by the US Government against US citizens occured when he was 26 years old.

Page 151 gets to the heart of the matter: "emergency does not create power." The executive cannot be allowed to claim inherent powers (Congress, not the executive, is "the government" in a Republic), citizen rights are not "donated" or abdicated once an election takes place, and the elite cannot violate the laws of the land. Which is of course what we have today with a national security state that uses secrecy to commit treason on a daily basis.

Among the many reasons this book is a 6 star book (in my top 10% -- see all my reviews across 98 categories at Phi Beta Iota the Public Intelligence Blog) is perhaps the greatest possible accomplishment of all: a lawyer representing justice with intelligence and integrity. I am fascinated by the constant presence in this book of social justice and the author's long-running reflections on utilitarianism versus intuitionism, and his appreciation for the importance of Reverend Witherspoon of Princeton University in shaping the morals of the Founding Fathers such that natural law and the rights of man served as the foundation for the US Constitution.

It was during the Silkwood case that the author learned that there was a "private" national intelligence network, the Law Enforcement Intelligence Unit (LEIU), and that federal signals intelligence and wiretapping capabilities were routinely deployed, illegally, in support of private enterprise (e.g. the private nuclear industry sneaking nuclear capabilities to Israel with CIA cover). I concur with the author's conclusion that nuclear power should not be in private hands, and would add to that my view that neither intelligence nor the military should be staffed with contractors burdended with massive conflicts of interest and lack of accountability even more severe than the present lack of accountability that the US national security "enterprise" enjoys.

I am stunned to learn that the foundation for DHS and FEMA's venturing into domestic concentration camps and hundreds if not thousands of rail cars pre-equipped with shackles (these are my current facts, not the author's) can be found in Ronald Reagan's tenure, at which time illegal immigrants were deliberately conflated with "terrorists" and substantial funding and planning earmarked for being able to round up 5,000 or more, overnight, if needed.

I learn that aircraft running drugs into the USA for the US Government have special call signs that place them off limits to interception. Talk about impeachable crimes at the highest levels!

The author's account of Iran Contra is focused mostly on Carl Jenkins and a few others. As it happens I was in El Salvador in 1979-1980 and on the Central American Task Force (CATF) with Alan Fiers in 1986, and am one of the fortunate innocents who was not indicted -- I was working on the legal side of CATF throughout. So I am fascinated with all of this, and I have to disagree with the author when he names Ted Shackley as the head of the "enterprise." Ted -- I met him once -- was a civil servant, not a rogue elephant. What he did he did thinking he was serving a higher master with authorization directly from the White House. At least that is how I see it. My three reviews below offer more perspective, along with the fourth book that I have avoided reading but have in the line-up.

Spymaster: My Life in the CIA
BLOND GHOST
Dark Alliance: The CIA, the Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion
The Secret Team: The CIA and Its Allies in Control of the United States and the World

For my insider perspective search for < Search: Seven CIAs [Steele on the Record] >.

It is in the aftermath of the Iran-Contra case that the author comes of age. I am impressed by a direct account from the author of how Senator John Kerry got bought off his investigation with a promise of the Vice Presidential nomination in 2000 (in other words, the Republican or heavy side of the two party criminal enterprise made a deal with the Democratic or light side of the two party criminal enterprise so that both could avoid making it clear to the average US citizen that the government was in enemy hands)

QUOTE (485): "The lesson was clear: accountability declines as the magnitude of their crime and the power of those charged increase."

The Iran-Contra investigations that were suppressed from public revelation also disclosed the existence of the Nazi hydra that collaborates with out of control elements of the CIA and I believe also the FBI and DEA, to run drugs into the USA to create off-budget wealth. See among other books I have reviewed:

The Nazi Hydra in America: Suppressed History of a Century

To understand the the Nazi subversion of the US military in partnership with the evangelicals, look for this online report from one of my counterintelligence colleagues:

Mongoose: 20130309 Added Transcripts for Mrs. Kay Griggs Interviews -- "German Disease" Across USMC & US Army Special Operations + Treason RECAP

QUOTE (497) Joseph Burkholder Smith, CIA: "I hope that your generation can stop these bastards. Because ours never did."

QUOTE (511) Ross Perot: "You know, Dan, as long as these guys are in operation, no man can truly call himself president."

PRECISELY. That is why I ran briefly for President, creating We the People Reform Coalition, one possible combination of alliances and ideas that can displace the two-party tyranny and reinstitute the rule of law in the USA.

The author treats the Catholic Church with kid gloves, only once venturing into the Knights of Malta and the long-standing secret relations among the Catholic elite, the US national security state, and certain other parties. I'm fine with that. Apart from observing that only the Quakers, Seventh Day Adventists, and Muslims do not represent a religious counterintelligence threat in the USA, I would, as a lapsed Colombian Jesuit altar boy who once knew the mass in Latin, be glad to leverage the secret societies of the Catholic Church against the other secret societies, as we begin what will be the most important chapter of modern American history, the battle for the soul of the Republic.

Two more quotes that represent the SIX-STAR value of this book:

QUOTE (562-563): "Walsh pointed out that the unlawful, unethical, and unconstitutional conduct undertaken by CIA operatives and other covert operations agencies in our executive branch in the name of 'anticommunism' between 1947-1977 (uncovered by congressional investigators in the aftermath of the Watergate burglary) had been repeated by the men who had created and operated the off-the-shelf enterprise--but this time they had committed their acts in the name of 'antiterrorism.'"

QUOTE (563): "Walsh essentially warned that these covert operations, and the zealots who ran them, constituted a clear and present danger to the constitutional order of our democracy."

The other reason this is a SIX-STAR book is because of its deeply ethical nature (not an attribute often asssociated with lawyers trained and employed in the USA). The author is still hung up on the left-right political axis, but he makes a very important point when he calls out the progressives and the left in general for failing to draw the line.

QUOTE (593): Twenty two years after the end of the Cold War, the leadership of the American liberal community still has not deigned to identify such as set of ethical principles. Instead, they have virtually abandoned the field now that the threat of communism has disappeared."

The author goes on to fail John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama in relation to the above.

I deeply respect Danny Sheehan -- he is the epitome of what a US citizen should be. Today he is still a relatively young man, I believe he has another 20-30 years of fight left in him. One can learn more about him at danielpsheehan.com and about his larger work at romeroinstitute.org.

America is about to enter into a civil war rooted in the public abdication of its responsibility to be informed engaged citizens. We cannot blame the rats that we allow to over-run the ship of state. We must take ourselves in hand. This book is not only the summatiion of the first half of Danny Sheehan's life. It is the window into why and how he and others, including myself, will fight the second half of the battle for the soul of the Republic.

PS Amazon allows me ten links. With a certain sense of humor, I refer the reader to all my six star reviews at Phi Beta Iota the Public Intelligene Blog but here is the last link: a good Catholic spy who did what he was told to do, very very well, and now does this for Wall Street. I would trust him to clean up CIA if and when we have an honest government that *wants* an honest CIA.

Good Hunting: An American Spymaster's Story

ADMIN NOTE: This book was tough going -- even eye-glazing. I have never, in the thousands of books I have read, seen a starker contrast between prodigal son brilliance and Nobel level performance being presented, and the worst possible least useful presentation format. The table of contents is devoid of information. 4 parts, 31 chapters titled (I do not make this stuff up) Chapter One through Chapter Thirty One. I strongly recommend that the author find a new publisher and immediately restructure the book into coherent segments associated with a timeline that starts the book, photographs, glossary, snap-shots of each key case including lessons learned and future issues unresolved, snap-shots of key people, and a new epilogue that connects the quarter century of path-finding by the author to the quarter century of civil war in the USA that is now beginning, courtesy of 9/11 (allowed to happen), Department of Homeland Security, FEMA-Halliburton concentration camps and railway cars with shackles, urban blimps, drones, and street corner camaras, and the two-party tyranny (executive, legislative, and judiciary) that no longer represents We the People in any manner. [My views on the alternative to be fought for can be found online at We the People Reform Coaltion.]

Thankyou--Daniel Sheehan--For Your Life!
By DH Koester
You are confronted with an enormous moral dilemma when you find yourself in the halls of power or holding hands with this countrys'decision-makers and discover, much to your horror, that their interests run contrary to the welfare of humanity at large--even worse that you have become a cog in their machinations of corruption and evil and that your efforts are being used to contribute to goals abhorent to everything you believe is good and right.

Most people find it easier, safer, to join the decievers--finding it more comfortable and rewarding to toss their beliefs to the wind. Others, a very few, however, will feel compelled to stand up--throw a wrench in the gears--try to change things--or at least slow them down--to sound the alarm to those on the outside. But theirs is only a voice in the wilderness and when you're inside the system, you either play the game according to the rules--or you get squashed like a bug by the powerful elite.

You can either try to effect change from the inside as part of the system or from the outside--though neither is quite effective.

Sheehan found away to work both from within and from without--and still preserve his credibility, his career and his life. We, the public, do not always hold such men in a positive light, at least in the beginning bacause we have long ago become victims of the decievers. But eventually the truth comes out and we are able to recognize it as such. Then men such as these are seen for what they really are--heroic plugs in the holes of the dikes without which we would all drown in a sea of lies.
Sheehans life and others like him are to be celebrated by good people everywhere.

What lies and deceptions has Sheehan been instrumental in exposing?? Among the many;

o Nixons' deal with the S Vietnamese to continue the war until after he was elected--just when they were about to make peace with the N Vietnamese.
o Reagans deal with the Iranian Mulahs to keep the hostages until after the election even as that nations' President was about to release them.
o The CIAs' role in international drug smuggling
o Legal affirmation of the medias' right to publish the Pentagon Papers exposing government lies surrounding the Vietnam War.
o Fighting to make the state of this countries nuclear power plant deficiencies more transparent.
o Expansion of Civil Rights legislation
o Bringing to light Reagans' Iran-Contra dealings and our dirty little wars in C America.

John Philpot Curran in 1790 said, "The condition upon which God hath given liberty to man is eternal vigilance; which condition if he breaks, servitude is at once the consequence of his crime and the punishment of his guilt."

Sheehan has done his part. Have we??

Every American should read this book before the next election.
By Stan Wilson
A scary book. It is non-fiction and that's why it is so frightening. I couldn't lay it down once I started reading it and its 594 pages.

A lot of evil people serve in government. Both republicans and democrats at the highest levels. Sheehan, Danny he likes to be called gives a view behind the headlines and lies of those in power - both in the public sector and at the highest political levels.

I don't agree with Sheehan on many of his political views, but I certainly would list him as an America Hero for having the guts to tell the truth about what happens behind closed doors in Washington DC and corporate board rooms.

Every high school and college should have it on the reading list.
