Evelina Cooper, the niece of the great Sherlock Holmes, is poised to enjoy her first Season in London Society. But there’s a murderer to deal with—not to mention missing automatons, a sorcerer, and a talking mouse.
In a Victorian era ruled by a council of ruthless steam barons, mechanical power is the real monarch and sorcery the demon enemy of the Empire. Nevertheless, the most coveted weapon is magic that can run machines—something Evelina has secretly mastered. But rather than making her fortune, her special talents could mean death or an eternity as a guest of Her Majesty’s secret laboratories. What’s a polite young lady to do but mind her manners and pray she’s never found out?
But then there’s that murder. As Sherlock Holmes’s niece, Evelina should be able to find the answers, but she has a lot to learn. And the first decision she has to make is whether to trust the handsome, clever rake who makes her breath come faster, or the dashing trick rider who would dare anything for her if she would only just ask.
Praise for A Study in Silks
“This book has just about everything: magic, machines, mystery, mayhem, and all the danger one expects when people’s loves and fears collide. I can’t wait to return to the world of Evelina Cooper!”—Kevin Hearne, New York Times bestselling author of The Iron Druid Chronicles
“As Sherlock Holmes’s niece, investigating murder while navigating the complicated shoals of Society—and romance—in an alternate Victorian England, Evelina Cooper is a charming addition to the canon.”—Jacqueline Carey, New York Times bestselling author of the Kushiel’s Legacy series
“Holloway takes us for quite a ride, as her plot snakes through an alternate Victorian England full of intrigue, romance, murder, and tiny sandwiches. Full of both thrills and frills.”—Nicole Peeler, author of the Jane True series
“A Study in Silks is a charming, adventurous ride with a heroine who is both clever and talented. The brushes with the Sherlock Holmes mythos only add to the fun of this tale, and readers are bound to fall in love with Evelina and the London she inhabits.”—Philippa Ballantine, author of Geist
“In A Study in Silks, Emma Jane Holloway has created a wonderful reimagining of the Sherlock Holmes mythos set in a late-Victorian Britain ruled by nefarious industrial titans called steam barons. Holloway’s clever writing, attention to detail, and sublime characters forge a fascinating world that combines brass-plated steampunk technology with magic. By turns a coming-of-age story, a gas-lamp thriller, and a whimsical magical fantasy, A Study in Silks is the premiere novel of an author to watch.”—Susan Griffith, author of the Vampire Empire series

Evelina Cooper has a taste for science, a gift of magic, a famous uncle (Sherlock Holmes himself), and an uncertain future. Her parents' scandalous elopement is the talk of the town, and she's fending off the attentions of both her friend Imogen's ne'er-do-well brother, Tobias, and her dashing childhood friend, circus performer Nick. Then her stay with Imogen's family for her debut season is disrupted by the murder of a servant. As they investigate the murder, Evelina and Imogen are drawn into a web of plots surrounding the steam barons who dominate London, and even Evelina's uncle may not be safe. Holloway stuffs her adventure with an abundance of characters and ideas and fills her heroine with talents and graces, all within a fun, brisk narrative. The importance of Evelina's friendship with Imogen is especially welcome, though Holmes's role in solving the central mystery gilds the lily a little too much. Agent: Sally Harding, Cooke Agency. Murder, mystery, magic, humor, deadly secrets--it's all there. And this is only Part I
By Jacqui Murray
Emma Jane Holloway's mystery/thriller, "A Study in Silks", is fabulous. Thank goodness it is the first of three in the Baskerville Affair. The plot is common enough--murder in a wealthy home, police are stumped (or ignore it), powerful enemies want the murder to stay hidden, amateur detective digs around until it's solved--at the risk of her own life, girl falls in love with TWO boys. Yeah, you've read dozens like that.
Here's what makes Holloway's story different:
* the amateur detective (Evilena Cooper) is Sherlock Homes' gorgeous niece, which means he makes a few critical cameos
* Evilena has a storied past--which includes, magic, common roots, secrets that could ruin her in the wealthy society she wishes to be part of
* Evilena has magical powers, part of which are a cute mouse and a sharp-tongued bird who add comic relief at just the right times
* it's set in Victorian England in a bit of an alternate reality where Steam Power is King
From the beginning, I can feel 1800's England--the clothing, bustling life, speech style. Holloway puts me there. The characters are multi-layered and believable. The plot is richly-woven and intricate. And then she mixes in a touch of sci fi with futuristic devices, and a sprinkle of magic, to create a hybrid genre that Amazon settled on classifying as 'mystery-thriller.
The only part that annoyed me was the temporal arrangement of the early chapters. The story kept jumping around as Holloway tried to share the actions of the various main characters. I didn't so much get used to it as it ended when the plot was in full swing.
Although the story takes 549 pages to tell, the last few pages make it clear this is only part one. Thank goodness. I need to see what happens to Evilena. And Mouse. And Bird...

Don't be fooled....This a youth level romance with little to attract a mature mystery fan
By Amazon Customer
This is a romance story. Plain and simple. The few moments she spends working on the "case", is vastly overwhelmed by the wishywashy, oh my goodness, what should poor little old me do?? Which man she will choose.... the dangerous carney that makes her blood boil.... or the Lord's son that takes her breath away.... (gag me) and how her uncle Sherlock would do this or that. She stumbles into and out of trouble and gets info not thru her own intelligence, but by doing something stupid.....
I kept waiting for her to live up to the book description, to be a female Sherlock.... but she never did. I muddled through 2/3 of the book and finally gave up. I don't mind a little romance to move the story along, but I don't like it when a book is described as mystery or thriller or whatever and it turns out to be nothing more than a juvenile romance.

A rollicking read!
By P. B. Sharp
"A Study in Silks" is looong but worth plowing through if you have the time. The extremely fat book is about six inches high with some 549 pages. The novel has plenty of suspense, intrigue and romance with a bit of sci-fi thrown in. I thoroughly enjoyed the book as well as the remarks of other reviewers. One of the reviews "Strong Steampunk Victorian Mystery" puzzled me. I was out to lunch on what a "Steampunk' was, so Wikipedia came to my aid: "Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery, especially in a setting inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century." None of the reviews agree as to how to spell heroine Cooper's first name. We have Evelina (correct) and Evalena and Evilena. "Evilena" would be a great moniker for a witch.
"Silks" will plunk you in Victorian England, the very best place for a murder mystery. There's a Stately Mansion, aristocrats and commoners including among the latter the heroine Evelina Cooper. But although not an aristocrat, Evelina is the niece of Sherlock Holmes and you can count on her being smart and unconventional like Uncle. Inspector Lestrade appears here and there as does Sherlock himself as well as "one of the best souls in the empire", Dr.Watson.
Evelina has magical powers which Uncle Sherlock would not approve of. She can imbue a brass bird and a brass mouse with magical powers and the novel is brushed with shades of hi-fi and fantasy. Author Holloway makes the magical scenes believable. This totally original approach manages to work although my instinct is that Sherlock Holmes would scoff at any magician activities as being about the same level as believing in fairies. The futuristic steam machines occupying a lot of space in the novel would be more to his liking. A little background checking helped me with the plot as I had not understood who the Steam Barons were and their importance and significance in Victorian London.
We have then, a young woman, Evelina, who sets out to solve the mystery of a parlor maid's murder which takes place in the very mansion where she is staying as the guest of her beautiful and upper-class friend Imogene. Evelina wishes to be part of wealthy society which is closed to her because she is a commoner. Her father ran a traveling circus and although her mother was of aristocratic heritage her connections to anything as vulgar as a circus would derail her debutante aspirations. She thirsts to come out, not as a gay person but as a debutante in a ceremony when she will kiss the hand of Queen Victoria. But she also thirsts to solve the mystery of the dead maid and surreptiously employ her magic skills. Can Evelina be a magician, a sleuth and a ravishing debutante at the same time? And she has not one boyfriend but two to complicate her life.
Author Holloway's plot is sprightly, interesting and complicated with many strings needing tidying up. Her sheer use of language will entertain you as you go- "silence resounded with all the majesty of an Oriental gong". Holloway can be sneaky. Up pops an archaeologist named Heinrich Schliemann who actually lived and who actually found the lost city of Troy. In the novel Schliemann had unearthed an "Athena Casket" which has great significance in the story, but that is fiction (I think). Although the novel seethes with action it is simultaneously very erudite and you may learn a thing or two as I did.
"Silks" main fault is that it is too long. The addition of magic is certainly a different oeuvre, and although Evelina is an underground sorcerer with the ability to make brass creatures- a mouse and a bird- do her bidding, including some good old fashioned spying, the fantasy works. A superior mystery-thriller novel, don't miss it!
