Okay, but not fantastic…

I've seen a couple of Candice Olson's shows back when I still had cable, and I liked them, so I was really pleased when I discovered this book. Also, I was excited for a book that focuses on design challenges in particular, something a lot of interior design books do not. I really wanted to like this book, but it has some flaws. First off, let's cover the good points. The photos are nicely done – they are clear and large enough to get a good sense of the room. The designs, for the most part, are elegant and nice-enough looking, although a bit heavy on neutrals. As for the bad stuff…
I guess one of my main complaints is that for a book about design challenges, there aren't a huge variety of challenges in here. One of the sections is literally on designing themed rooms. Is this really "challenge-worthy"? I guess the section on blending two styles to please arguing spouses was good, but once again, not exactly what I think of when I think of a design challenge. The first section was really the best, because designing for small spaces and weird, narrow rooms are truly design challenges. I would've liked to see some other annoying issues as well, such as an awkward corner fireplace, what to do with a weird L-shaped room, rooms with too many doorways/windows (and not enough wall space), designing around support columns, etc.
Although, for that last one about support columns, we do get her solution to one on page 160, where she sticks a TV against the column. Unfortunately, this leads into another of her issues – she has a bad habit of randomly putting the TV wherever it's convenient. Sometimes it winds up at the right viewing level, but sometimes it's too high or too low (the worst example being that support column TV on pg. 160, where the TV is so low its view is literally being blocked by the coffee table in front of it). Also, I've noticed that Candice has a tendency to put coffee tables really close to couches – I don't know if it's the angle of the photo or what, but it looks like something you'd be banging your shin on constantly. My last complaint, and this one is fairly serious, is that her designs don't always tend towards the practical. Installing giant water features, very specifically shaped wall recesses around a TV, and large built-in tufted velvet benches seems like something that would be hard to remove if someone ended up disliking it later. Or what if the owners wanted to move later – maybe the new buyers wouldn't be so keen on faux-stone wallpaper all around a fireplace (instead of a nice stone/tile façade that would stand the test of time)? On the bright side, she does seem to love neutrals (and little else), so I guess if you were selling your house later, you'd be all set!
Overall, I was looking forward to this book but now that I’ve read it, I’m kind of disappointed. I’m not super upset that I bought it, but I’m not exactly blown away either. It’s okay, I guess, but honestly I think you’d get more out of the “Sensible Chic” book. It doesn’t feature design challenges heavily, but it does deal with the biggest challenge of all – being able to afford to decorate your room. Plus, I like the designs in that book better. Anyway, I can only recommend
“Candice Olson Favorite Design Challenges” if you are a huge fan of the show, or otherwise just really like her designs. If you are just looking for solutions to common design challenges, this isn’t going to help you too much.

BEAUTIFUL rooms!!!

Candice is one of my favorite HGTV designers. Many of the rooms in the book I remember from her TV shows. Her designs are elegant and sophisticated, but never over the top. Even if you can't afford the furniture or accessories, she explains what and how she solved certain design problems, and gives tips that anyone can use. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in designing a beautiful room.
