Alaimein, by Stephen Bungay

El Alamein was the World War II land battle Britain had to win. By the summer of 1942 Rommel's German forces were threatening to sweep through the Western Desert and drive on to the Suez Canal, and Britain was in urgent need of military victory. Then, in October, after 12 days of attritional tank battle and artillery bombardment, Montgomery's Eighth Army, with Australians and New Zealanders playing crucial roles in a genuinely international Allied fighting force, broke through the German and Italian lines at El Alamein. It was a turning-point in the war after which, in Churchill's words, "we never had a defeat". Stephen Bungay's book is as much at home analysing the crucial logistics of keeping desert armies supplied with petrol and tank parts as it is reappraising the combat strategies of Montgomery and Rommel, and ranges widely from the domestic political pressures on Churchill to the aerial siege of Malta, key to the control of the Mediterranean. And in a chapter on "The Soldier's War", Bungay graphically evokes the phantasmagoric blur of thunderous cannonade and tormenting heat that was the lot of the individual men who actually fought and died in the desert.

From Publishers Weekly
While providing the necessary information about Rommel and others before getting to the battle itself, Bungay (The Most Dangerous Enemy) provides the most limited coverage of these three books, yet competently contextualizes the battle's elements. One chapter is devoted to the character of the armies involved and the desert battlefield, covering aspects of the desert environment; soldiers' food; the hazards of the battlefield for different branches of service (infantry, artillery and armor); the culture and morale of British, German and Italian soldiers (along with their various motivations to fight); and relations between the ranks. Chapter eight, a succinct overview of the battle, makes an excellent, ready reference, without concentrating on any particular action. The book also includes a few nice asides about the larger war, to give the battle story some context, but it will appeal most to the initiated who want to quickly understand what happened and why in this corner of the war. The book has some careful descriptions of the relations between Allied commanders and analysis of their abilities, but is a bit short on the average soldier's view.

From the Publisher
For Great Britain, there were two pivotal battles in the Second World War. One was the Battle of Britain. The other was El Alamein. There, in October 1942, in a remote part of the desert between Libya and Egypt, the British army under the command of General Montgomery won an epic battle of attrition with Rommel’s Afrika Korps. It was a defeat from which Rommel would never recover and a turning point in the war, famously celebrated by Churchill as “the end of the beginning”—the line in the sand that Hitler’s forces were never able to cross. Like his definitive history of the Battle of Britain, The Most Dangerous Enemy, Stephen Bungay’s Alamein is a trenchant re–examination of an event that has been cloaked in myth.

Bungay’s insightful management-savvy analysis delivers another winner
By The Guardian
Successful modern business strategist Stephen Bungay previously brought his formidable analytical skills to examine the Battle of Britain in his impressive book ‘The Most Dangerous Enemy’, a defining work in understanding that important historical conflict.

In this shorter work about the desert campaign culminating in the Battle of El Alamein, Bungay once again brings his intelligent analytical mind to examine the conflict from perspectives focussed not only on the battlefield, the armies and their equipment, but on the political and strategic hinterland governing the motives and actions of the various participants.

Of inestimable importance, the author illustrates, is the big picture. Hitler saw the Mediterranean theatre as a sideshow to his invasion of the USSR, sent the Deutsches Afrika Korps (DAK) under Rommel to Libya to prevent Mussolini suffering the humiliation of total defeat at the hands of the British Commonwealth forces, and simply wanted ‘not to lose.’ The DAK never received sufficient resources or supplies to finish off the British forces because British warships, submarines and aircraft based in Malta were sinking their supply ships all the time, and when the DAK reached Alamein their supply tail was too long and continuously harassed by the allied air forces. The Panzerarmee Afrika which comprised roughly even numbers of German and Italian forces – fundamentally unsuited as allies – were unable to invade Egypt and occupy Cairo and Alexandria partly because of these factors (and partly Auchinleck’s skilled defensive battle). Occupying Cairo was not something Hitler was enthusiastic about, though Mussolini greeted the prospect with great relish and looked forward to riding into Cairo on a white horse as ‘The Conqueror of Egypt.’

Churchill by contrast wanted to win in North Africa and dominate the Mediterranean, rather than just ‘not lose’ and was never content with a stalemate. There were important strategic and political reasons for fighting and winning the battle at Alamein, which the 8th Army did not need to fight for military reasons because the ‘Torch’ landings would have ultimately led to Rommel being attacked from the west by overwhelming allied forces and having his supply lines severed. The battle had to be fought and won to prove that the British Army could defeat an equivalent German Army fighting under a German general; to rebuild the 8th Army’s confidence as ‘winners’. Stalin on the one side, and the Americans on the other, also needed to be convinced that Britain was an effective ally with a hard-fighting army which could comprehensively defeat the Wehrmacht in the field on its own. Secondly, the victory was needed to secure Churchill’s position at home, as by 1942 his conduct of the war was being criticised and he had already faced a censure motion in Parliament. Churchill certainly made the most of the victory: after November 1942 his position as PM was never challenged until the 1945 election.

The early chapters cover the strategic war; the tactical war - with an enlightening examination of the different command styles of the Italian, British and German forces, the latter with their ‘Mission Command’ philosophy proving superior on the battlefield; the supply war with a long and detailed section about the importance of Malta which the Axis forces planned to invade (and needed to) but never did; and an excellent chapter ‘The Soldiers’ War’ redolent of the author’s incisive no-holds-barred analysis of aircrew experiences in ‘The Most Dangerous Enemy.’

The personality issues between the Germans and Italians, between Kesselring and Rommel, between the British commanders in charge of Malta’s air defences and between Montgomery and almost everyone, are dealt with by the author with skill and insight. Bungay is a thorough researcher who wherever possible goes back to original sources - like Rommel’s letters to his wife Lucie for example, which are continuously quoted in the book. An examination of the governing philosophies of the two opposing air forces is also very illuminating. The Desert Air Force focussed resources in support of the ground troops by attacking the enemy’s formations and supply columns; the MO of the Luftwaffe’s fighter arm in contrast was that everything operationally should feed the objective of upping the kill scores of a handful of ‘Ace’ pilots in order to feed Goebbels’ propaganda machine for civilian morale-boosting, so the RAF’s bombers attacking Rommel’s troops were left largely unmolested (“the bombers had tail gunners”). The RAF therefore proved incomparably more effective both strategically and tactically, and although the Me109F was superior in every way to Hurricanes and American lend-lease P40s, it was the RAF who eventually gained air superiority and ensured the ground victory was decisive.

Montgomery might have never emerged from relative obscurity had the transport plane carrying Gott (the initial appointee as 8th Army commander) not been shot down, killing him with others on board. The choice of Monty to replace Gott was greeted by Churchill with scepticism. Bungay does not lionise Monty and is fully aware of his notoriously ‘difficult’ side, but explains where these attitudes originated and demonstrates convincingly that he was exactly what the 8th Army needed at the time. Most importantly Monty recognised that British troops often referred to the DAK simply as “Rommel” and were in awe of the German general. Monty was the first British general to appreciate the importance of what we would now term media management to a wider audience, and by consciously and deliberately marketing himself as a recognisable personality with whom the troops could identify, responded directly to the personality cult around Rommel by creating a counterpoint in himself. He also galvanised the Army in ways his predecessors Auchinleck and O’Connor, for all their achievements and tactical abilities, failed to do. By emphasising training, supplies, inter-arm battlefield co-operation and above all, morale, he told them directly, face to face that they were going to win and “there is no doubt about it.” He played to the strengths of the 8th Army and within the limitations of what could be achieved, made it an effective fighting machine; he gave it unassailable confidence in itself and in its leadership. “Montgomery’s was a double achievement”, writes Bungay, “He fought the battle the army could win, and created the army to win the battle…he had to do a lot more than Rommel, who did not have to build professional skills because the German General Staff had done that in the 1930s. Neither in fighting the battle nor in building the army was Montgomery 100% successful…but successful enough to get a decision on that battlefield and turn the army into an instrument capable of winning battles to come.”

Bungay is a superb writer with an engaging, direct style, intelligent and highly literate. Often humorous and always interesting, his books are page-turners and thoroughly enjoyable. His modern management analysis skills bring new perspectives to these historic events.

Among the scores of books in print on the desert campaign, Bierman and Smith’s excellent ‘Alamein: War without Hate’ which covers the entire North African campaign until the surrender of all Axis forces in Tunisia in the spring of 1943, makes an excellent companion to Bungay’s insightful analysis and can also be unconditionally recommended.

An good study on Alamein
By BernardZ
This is a battle that I have read a lot about. It was in WW2 terms, a small battle but in terms of consequences, it had major significance. It was a battle that probably Britain did not even need to fight but for their morale, they had to fight and win.

Having said that for this reason much has been written on this battle but Stephen Bungay has managed to put a new twist on the battle. Whereas most people discuss the actual battle, he tends to discuss the factors that go around the battle as well eg the supply line, generalship and the respective airforce. In a very interesting way.

I find myself disputing one minor point eg German air force kills where he states that on 9/01/42 Marseille shot down 17 British aircraft in one day. In fact on that day, the British lost 11 planes to all causes including AA fire. As pilots often tend to exaggerate their kills, Stephen Bungay should have been more careful in accepts such facts on face value. On the other hand I do agree with his conclusions that as the *star* German pilots tended to consider their purpose to build up scores not the mission and to some extent the German system encouraged this aim, this resulted in the German airforce not doing their mission properly.

If you are looking for a book to start you off on Alamein or looking for a book to give you some new insight into this battle, this book is for you.

The Guy Davenport Reader, by Guy Davenport

“The difference between the Parthenon and the World Trade Center, between a French wine glass and a German beer mug, between Bach and John Philip Sousa, between Sophocles and Shakespeare, between a bicycle and a horse, though explicable by historical moment, necessity, and destiny, is before all else a difference of imagination.
The imagination is like the drunk man who has lost his watch, and must get drunk again to find it. It is as intimate as speech and custom, and to trace its ways we need to re-educate our eyes.”—Guy Davenport

Modernism spawned the greatest explosion of art, architecture, literature, painting, music, and dance of any era since the Renaissance. In its long unfolding, from Yeats, Pound and Eliot to Picasso and Matisse, from Diaghilev and Balanchine to Cunningham and Stravinsky and Cage, the work of Modernism has provided the cultural vocabulary of our time.

One of the last pure Modernists, Guy Davenport was perhaps the finest stylist and most protean craftsman of his generation. Publishing more than two dozen books of fiction, essays, poetry and translations over a career of more than forty years, he was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 1990. In poetry and prose, Davenport drew upon the most archaic and the most modern of influences to create what he called “assemblages”—lush experiments that often defy classification. Woven throughout is a radical and coherent philosophy of desire, design and human happiness. But never before has Davenport’s fiction, nonfiction, poetry and translations been collected together in one compendium. Eight years after his death, The Guy Davenport Reader offers the first true introduction to the far-ranging work of this neglected genius.

From Bookforum
Reece, a former student and longtime friend of Davenport’s, has edited the first posthumous survey of his achievement. Davenport was an exceedingly private man, unlikely to be the subject of a biography, so one of the reasons we should welcome The Guy Davenport Reader is for its glimpses into a personality that was mostly subsumed in his work. Reece’s own contribution, a postscript reminiscence, gives a sense of Davenport’s humor and charisma without papering over his flaws: a prickly temperament that could seem chilly and aloof, and a tendency to expect so much from friendship that he suffered frequent bouts of loneliness, the flip side of his productive habits of solitude. —James Gibbons

Review
"Guy Davenport seems comfortable in any genre... For whatever else he is, Davenport is an entertainer ... to the point of being able to take literary dullards like Kafka and Poe and turn them, too, into charming entertainers."RALPH

Good Introduction to the Astonishing Prof. Davenport
By SocJan
Today I had a phone call from an 83-year-old stranger who turned out to be another enthusiastic reader of Guy Davenport. She told me she has a rule: "Read anything by Guy Davenport, and in less than 48 hours something unfamiliar that he has mentioned will pop up in another book or article or in conversation." I add: And you will pay attention to it in a way you would not have without Davenport.

Guy Davenport can change your life, enriching it immediately via essays and stories whose subjects and language bring smiles to your face -- and in the long run by sending you forth on expeditions into fields you never thought you would want to explore.

I've been at it for thirty years and there is no end in sight.

THE GUY DAVENPORT READER is not for those of us who are already familiar with his wide ranging work, however.
Except for the brief introduction and thoughtful afterword by Erik Reece, Davenport's literary executor, nothing here is new.

But for those just discovering Davenport this book collects in a single volume highly accessible samplings of his essays (not at all stuffy) and his short stories (unlike anyone else's). Sometimes you can't tell which is which: Is "The Concord Sonata" a "necessary fiction" or is it an essay? Also here are samples of his lively translations of the earliest Greek poets and of his own poetry.

Guy Davenport's "radical innocence", as Reece terms it, means he was not afraid of sex. No one captures adolescent sexuality more frankly, wittily, and calmly than Davenport. His stories reflecting ideas of Charles Fourier are explorations of a world we don't live in, where sex is not fraught. That world may be unrealistically utopian, but we visit it with profit, contrasting our "real" world with Davenport's imaginary one of mutual respect and kind thoughtfulness. "Gunnar and Nicolai" is reprinted here, one of my favorites.

The many pleasures of reading Davenport begin with his highly idiosyncratic diction. THE OXTER ENGLISH DICTIONARY, thin but not as thin as its punning title suggests, is limited to words that Davenport and a handful of other modern masters rediscovered and restored to English. Their enhanced vocabulary allowed them to write with great precision, and allow us the pleasure of discovering words that capture ideas and distinctions known to our ancestors but now all but lost.

And then there are Davenport's inventive approaches to creating "fictional" texts, including textual collage. In the middle of a Davenport paragraph you may detect sentences by another author, tucked seamlessly in so that you do not always notice them. (DeFoe, for example: fragments of ROBINSON CRUSOE hidden in "A Field of Snow on a Slope of the Rosenberg".)

And who else would create a story whose first and last "sentences" are beautifully-executed crow quill pen and ink images that he drew himself? (Davenport was an accomplished draughtsman and painter.)

For most readers, Davenport's is a voice unlike any we have heard before. He astonishes and delights. He inspires us to start paying the sort of attention that he did.

The more Davenport you read, the more you understand the Davenport you have already read; but also -- and this is the wonder of it, the more you understand the physical world and the world of ideas.

Give this book to any intelligent young person who might like to see what a (self-, in Davenport's case) educated mind is capable of. He richly exemplifies the adage "Don't let school get in the way of your education".

Hell, why should the young have all the fun? Give THE GUY DAVENPORT READER to any jaded older person still up to a pleasant and rewarding challenge.

If that's you, buy yourself a copy.

By Jim
If you Google "PDF, Diogenes, davenport" you can get a free copy of some of davenport's beautiful translation work, but he's such a not famous writer (a really almost, like the band that wouldn't sign to a major label) that you really have to grab a book to read his essays, which are a bit heady, but rewarding. I think he turned me on to new ideas and artists that I'd never really get to thinking about otherwise. His fiction is a bit odd (the short piece "And" is stunning) in that it riffs on real life figures (artists, at least half the time) which is fun if you're into moderns, and the afterword that the editor wrote really helped me get a sense of Davenport that made me want to read more. If yr skeptical, buy a used copy. A nice introduction or return to The author.

Gr 3–6—A book for children who don't want their scary fiction to be too scary and who enjoy liberal doses of corny humor. Malcolm and Dandy, both 10, are best buds who share a love of adventure. Malcolm has a penchant for quirky science tools that usually don't work so the boys are surprised to find that his recently purchased Ecto-Handheld-Automatic-Heat-Sensitive-Laser-Enhanced Specter Detector actually functions. The boys decide to unleash the ghost of Herbert McBleaky. Unfortunately, the loony, prank-loving ghost follows them home and terrorizes Malcolm's sister. It is after this incident that Malcolm realizes he must send off for the companion implement, which includes a ghost zapper, because once he detects a ghost, he needs to get rid of it. The two other stories follow a similar format, with funny escapades, slight suspense, and ghost encounters. This book could be used as an introduction to the scary, comedic genre in the vein of meatier titles such as James Howes's Bunnicula (Atheneum, 1979) or Roald Dahl's The BFG (Viking, 1985). Black-and-white cartoons enhance the story, and a fun list of the top 15 ways to detect a ghost, spirit, or poltergeist is included at the end.—Julie Shatterly, W.A. Bess Elementary School, Gastonia, NC

Review
"In this fast-paced chapter book, two ten-year-old ghost detectives, Malcom and Dandy, go on some very daring adventures with their mail-ordered, handy dandy “Ecto-Handheld-Automatic-Heat-Sensitive-Laser-Enhanced Specter Detector.” The story is humorous, witty, exciting and scary – a perfect adventure for middle readers." — Smart Books for Smart Kids

Jumping off the shelves!
By D. J. Atkins
I am responsible for ordering the books at 2 elementary schools. Two years ago, I ordered this set for one building. I read the first one to "get them started" on the series. Since then I have ordered 2 sets for each building and can not keep them on the shelves! The kids (grades 2 & 3) LOVE this series! If your kids have outgrown Ready Freddy and Junie B, then this is the series for you. Love the Ghost Detectors!

Great series for young boys.
By GabisGumby
Got this series at the library for my 8 yr old son. Have been searching for books that suck him in, hit the jackpot with these! He now wants to read, he looks forward to reading, he's excited and passionate about it! I haven't read them, so I can't comment on the content, but he loves it and that's what matters! I know there aren't as many great books out there for boys as there is for girls, so it was great finding this gem on the shelf. Never had a hard time finding things for my daughter at this age (granted, she read the entire Harry Potter series in 3 months in second grade, no comparison).

Fast moving and interesting plots. Very nice illustrations. Some negative character portrayals.
By Sunshine on a Rainy Day
This book contains stories #1-3 of the Ghost Detector series. The main character is Malcom, a budding scientist. He has an annoying older sister and a best friend, Dandy, who mostly just picks his nose. Malcolm sends off for a ghost detecting machine and gives it a try with unexpected results. In the next two stories, he solves ghost mysteries using his new machine as well as other devices.

There are illustrations throughout the book. The drawings are extremely well done and add interest to the book.

All three stories move extremely quickly with high adventure and interesting plots. The first and second story did not have complete closure so you were left with some questions. I bumped this book down a star because I could not like Malcom's sidekick, Dandy. He is portrayed as being an idiot who picks his nose and ears and wipes it on his shirt. Malcom does everything because Dandy is incapable. Many of the characters are negative such as the very mean older sister and the lying grandmother. Otherwise, I enjoyed the fast moving action and many of the quirks such as a ghost dog and the crazy devices. Recommended for grades 3-5.

The movement at the center of so many of these poems is that of air, fire, water, night' of what cannot be seen, even as the speaker moves ever inward to face her own dreams, her demons and her desires. The strong central poem, 'After the Rape,' defines the moment from which the poet must measure the world. That she finds in it the memory of a dolphin rising into the air is the magic of Nancy Kuhl's collection.--Judith Kitchen

beautiful and insightful poetry
By A Customer
Nancy Kuhl has written phenomenal poetry. Her attention to craft is startling in a writer this young. The poems in this chapbook immerse themselves in the beauty of life and loss and allow the reader to partake in Kuhl's fears and wisdom. The Wick series offers a glimpse of some great young writers.

Hating Perfection (Revised Edition): A Subtle Search for the Best Possible World, by John F. Williams

The best heaven and the worst hell are the same place. Travel with author John F. Williams into the jungles of Laos and into a new understanding of existence.

In lively short stories, Hating Perfection shows the everyday world as uncanny, equally strange as the imaginary worlds of Borges or Kafka. This engrossing, strikingly original book invites you to experience your life in a new way.

Hating Perfection weaves its stories together with an elegant logic. Our hateful world—painful, unjust, ruthless, fatal—stands revealed as the best of all possible worlds, flooded everywhere by a perfection both alien and addicting. What we want is different from what we get. But the reason why has a divine splendor.

In this revised edition, Mr. Williams has added a postscript that addresses the well-known philosopher’s paradox of the Chinese room. The author explains for the first time how we know that such a room as usually described would not have consciousness.

Stand beside Mr. Williams for a time, and look in the direction he is looking. Your troubles may still be your troubles, but the world will be more than it was.

I think this book may be an elaborate joke...or a vanity publication
By Dr. Vern Lindquist
This book is the oddest thing that ever showed up, unbidden, to my desk. I have no idea who sent it or why (I used to teach philosophy at college--so perhaps that explains it), but since I had a copy, I did give it a perusal.

I must say, it goes from oddity to oddity. the back cover lists "Twelve Great Reasons to Read This Book"--contains such helpful phrases as "If you're trying to lead a life, you need to read this book." Well then.

Or how about this: "New, accurate mathematical ideas about physical law....Wonderful and highly original." This about a book which contains NO mathematical formulae at all (unless they were included in code, or perhaps inscribed into the two color illustrations of sexy vampires in some hidden way).

The book is "Astonishing" as the blurb on the front cover suggests. I am myself thoroughly astonished that someone published this. This is the work of someone highly confused at the very least. Banality has a new champion.

made up nonsense passing for philosophy
By Burkay
John F. Williams, the author of this confused and profoundly ignorant manuscript, has been sending complementary copies to philosophy departments in the US. As a professional philosopher, I got one too. I have read about 100 pages of it, but the incessant laughter at his inconsistent language, vague concepts and blatantly false claims did not allow me to read the rest.

Mr. Williams, as far as I can tell, defends the following claim: Consciousness has a special place in the actual world. That place is determined by a normative fact: Consciousness occurs only in places that are worthy of it. That's why for instance, a machine that can pass the Turing test would have no consciousness. (But then again, Williams takes this back too and claims that we dont know why such a machine would have no consciousness). According to him, the world is not such a bad place after all. Actually it is rather the best possible world. Though the world doesn't always give us what we want, it still gives us a coherent, integrated and sometimes even pretty array of experiences. And that's as good as it gets.

It looks as if Mr. Williams has never met someone with severe mental disorders such as schizophrenia or Alzheimer's disease. Nor did he meet, it seems, anyone who is brain-damaged to the extent that their consciousness is not able to put together a coherent, integrated or pretty array of experiences. Perhaps he should have read a book or two about the pathologies of consciousness before attempting to solve its mysteries.

This book is a waste of time. I rather like badly written books because I find them humorous, but even I can't get through the whole thing. It isn't recommended. Save your money and time, and the world will be a much better place, at least as far as your conscious experience of it is concerned.

If only it were possible to assign negative 5 stars….
By S. Forrester
I am also a philosophy professor by trade, and this book showed up in my mailbox one day last year without any explanation. I began reading the 'revisions' of the revised edition, which are nothing more than just a few new pages stuck in the back, that attempt to deal with John Searle's Chinese Room argument. As a philosopher who is interested in the philosophy of mind, I quickly realized that this book was not written by someone who knows much of anything about philosophy, either its history or its current state. All the basic logical errors aside, his arguments demonstrate a deep ignorance of philosophy is all its facets. I think sometimes people, even college-educated ones, are mislead into thinking that since philosophy deals with the great questions of life, ones that we all engage with at some level at some times in our lives, it must be something that anyone and everyone can do. Many are unaware that philosophy is a profession and an academic discipline that requires years of study and practice to become qualified in. Mr Williams has done none of that, it's clear. --In fact, although he represents himself as a "Dr." of some sort, the bio of him here on Amazon says that he is a "venture capitalist". I get the impression that Mr. Williams is a complete sham, and that this persona is something someone who did not want to publicly acknowledge this as his/her work invented. --I am writing this review today because after a year of ignoring and trying to forget about this travesty of a text, a letter arrived just a little while ago. From Mr. Williams. He announces his imminent and immediate retirement (from what he doesn't specify), and presents us with a five paragraph summary of his views, and surprise(!), Mr. Williams has an agenda. He wants all of us philosophy professors to stop telling everyone that the world is a bad place, and that suffering is ok because it is in fact happiness. --A plainer, more simple contradiction there could not be. Not since Pangloss himself defended such absurdities in "Candide" has someone made so little sense on this issue. --To anyone who chooses to read this book, please do not take away the impression that this is what philosophy is. It is not.

This is an awesome manual - I'll probably keep it forever
By Emily Vogel
This is an awesome manual - I'll probably keep it forever. ACSM is one of the leading fitness professional organization and you can feel confident that they have the most up-to-date and accurate information available. It is a fairly easy read compared to the typical 500+ page textbook. The only reason it gets 4 out of 5 stars is because within a month of getting it, the spiral-bound cover had already slipped off. Still a great value!

ACSM is the gold standard, hands down!
By Jen
I ordered this updated source, as my original one was from the mid-2000's. As usual, ACSM brings forth the best information, and most updated physiological information when it comes to exercise testing and prescription. I always look to them when giving advice, or training clients. And, I will keep looking to them in the future. I recommend this book for anyone who is a personal trainer, or is looking to go into personal training or testing clients in a clinical setting. ACSM is the gold standard, hands down.

Spiral binding is a bad choice, but the book is great!

The spiral binding came apart almost immediately and I had to continuously fight to keep the pages together. I ended up losing quite a few of the pages from the binding all together and was unable to put them back into place, so the book basically became a stack of small little papers. I would definitely recommend getting the paperback or an electronic version if possible over the spiral-bound version that I got.

The book is great in terms of content though. The book has recommendations for all sorts of different populations, which is extremely helpful when working with someone with comorbidites that you have to keep in mind. Though unless someone referenced a page number for me in class, I had a relatively hard time finding this information when looking for it. Recommendations are also made by gender and age so you can be very precise when going into testing about goals for maximal performance and afterwards putting them into a percentile.

Boulevard of Broken Dreams: Why Public Efforts to Boost Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital Have Failed--and What to Do About It (The Kauf

Silicon Valley, Singapore, Tel Aviv--the global hubs of entrepreneurial activity--all bear the marks of government investment. Yet, for every public intervention that spurs entrepreneurial activity, there are many failed efforts that waste untold billions in taxpayer dollars. When has governmental sponsorship succeeded in boosting growth, and when has it fallen terribly short? Should the government be involved in such undertakings at all? Boulevard of Broken Dreams is the first extensive look at the ways governments have supported entrepreneurs and venture capitalists across decades and continents. Josh Lerner, one of the foremost experts in the field, provides valuable insights into why some public initiatives work while others are hobbled by pitfalls, and he offers suggestions for how public ventures should be implemented in the future.

Discussing the complex history of Silicon Valley and other pioneering centers of venture capital, Lerner uncovers the extent of government influence in prompting growth. He examines the public strategies used to advance new ventures, points to the challenges of these endeavors, and reveals the common flaws undermining far too many programs--poor design, a lack of understanding for the entrepreneurial process, and implementation problems. Lerner explains why governments cannot dictate how venture markets evolve, and why they must balance their positions as catalysts with an awareness of their limited ability to stimulate the entrepreneurial sector.

As governments worldwide seek to spur economic growth in ever more aggressive ways, Boulevard of Broken Dreams offers an important caution. The book argues for a careful approach to government support of entrepreneurial activities, so that the mistakes of earlier efforts are not repeated.

Review
Co-Winner of the 2010 Gold Medal Book Award in Entrepreneurship, Axiom Business
Winner of the 2009 PROSE Award in Business, Finance & Management, Association of American Publishers

"[S]uperb."--Edward L. Glaeser, New York Times' Economix blog

"Lots of governments would like to promote high-tech entrepreneurship and venture capital in their regions--but many don't know how to do it effectively. In his new book Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Josh Lerner . . . examines which types of policies to promote entrepreneurship and venture capital tend to work--and which don't. Lerner supports his carefully researched analysis with numerous examples chosen from around the globe."--MIT Sloan Management Review

"Can governments spark start-up activity and job creation by getting into the venture capital business? Or do they just waste taxpayer money whenever they try? Those are the two questions that animate the new book from Harvard Business prof Josh Lerner, Boulevard of Broken Dreams. . . . [W]hile the stories of failures are entertaining, what's most useful about Boulevard are the examples of governments that have gotten it right. . . . [A] really readable collection of data, anecdotes, and thoughtful arguments."--Scott Kirsner, Boston Globe blog "Innovation Economy"

"Today, calls for more innovation and entrepreneurship are more fashionable than ever, especially within government, where politicians and bureaucrats wastefully attempt to manufacture, via policy and subsidies, fresh batches of master agents and adventurers. But can government policy trigger entrepreneurship and subsequent growth? The title of a new book suggests not, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, by Harvard professor Josh Lerner. Much of Broken Dreams is a first-rate handbook for policy makers keen to avoid interventions that have proven track records as disasters. Lerner produces example after example of bad program design, bad implementation and plain dumb, even corrupt, policy making."--Terence Corcoran, National Post

"Mr. Lerner provides more than a dozen rules of thumb for effective government intervention in the private sector."--Harry Hurt III, New York Times

"[A] useful book."--David Brooks, New York Times

"During economic turmoil, many look to the government to boost the economy by investing in entrepreneurship. But is that a good idea? Josh Lerner wrestles with that question in Boulevard of Broken Dreams, which considers the history of the public sector's involvement in entrepreneurship and venture capitalism--what's worked, from Silicon Valley to Singapore, and what's gone horribly awry. . . This book aims to steer policymakers in the right direction."--BizEd Magazine

"The book is instructive, well researched and contains some wise lessons from the past in terms of the government's role in promoting entrepreneurship and growth businesses. . . . [T]ake note, politicians and mandarins: this book can provide much-needed advice and perhaps a shortcut to developing more effective policies. . . . [R]ecommended reading to any local economic development practitioner who takes an interest in the big policy questions of today, and [it has] direct relevance to local economic development."--Glenn Athey, Local Economy

From the Back Cover

"This important, well-reasoned book reminds us in times of financial crisis that it is innovation and technical change in the real economy that is ultimately responsible for our prosperity--and that, alas, there are no silver bullets or simple policies to advance the process. Provocative, interesting, and useful."--Amar Bhidé, author of The Venturesome Economy

"Boulevard of Broken Dreams shows a deep understanding of the role of government in boosting entrepreneurship."--Sir Ronald Cohen, chairman of The Portland Trust and Bridges Ventures, and cofounder and former chairman of Apax Partners

"Boulevard of Broken Dreams is destined to be regarded as the classic study about how governments can succeed or fail in attempting to produce successful entrepreneurial environments and programs. All policymakers interested in achieving success--and avoiding failure--in encouraging entrepreneurial activity need to study and master the lessons described so eloquently by Josh Lerner."--David M. Rubenstein, cofounder and managing director of The Carlyle Group

"Innovation and entrepreneurship are incredibly important engines for economic growth. As governments around the world try to restart this engine in the wake of the global crisis, they will find this book to be an ideal guide."--Ken Wilcox, CEO of Silicon Valley Bank

"Such a cogent, well-reasoned explanation of the role of government policy--for good and ill--is long overdue. I hope that all audiences, whether policymakers, entrepreneurs, educators, or voters, will read and heed its advice."--Richard Kramlich, cofounder and general partner of New Enterprise Associates

"In this valuable and well-thought-out book, Lerner supports his astute observations with a wealth of clear models drawn from throughout the world. He provides striking examples in which governmental efforts to encourage entrepreneurial activity have been effective, along with other instances in which such efforts have fallen on their face and incurred high costs to society."--William J. Baumol, author of The Free-Market Innovation Machine

"This important and timely book will impact the ways policymakers think about venture capital and how to support it more effectively. The book is deeply rooted in economic research, leaves ideology behind, and focuses on facts. It explains complex economic analysis in simple terms and provides many useful examples to illustrate fundamental issues."--Thomas F. Hellmann, University of British Columbia

CapitalFlak
By CapitalFlak
"How can we become more like the Silicon Valley?" Policy makers and civic-minded entrepreneurs across the world spend countless hours on the question and taxpayers spend billions billions on resulting projects. This book documents the record of failure for most of those efforts and provides a fundamental lesson that caution and skepticism should permeate any discussion about them. But those who look to this book for more -- for concrete guidance about what will work -- will find, unfortunately, another broken dream.

Harvard Business School professor Josh Lerner starts with a warning: "For each effective government intervention, there have been dozens, even hundreds, of failures, where substantial public expenditure bore no fruit." Lerner proceeds with a narrative of failures and successes from around the world. Malaysia, France, Norway, Iowa, New York City and others each had failed initiatives either small or large that Lerner describes. Singapore, Tel Aviv and Silicon Valley itself were his notable successes. It is in this narrative where the primary value of the book resides simply because there is no prior, book-length attempt to gather facts on these initiatives and their results.

But Lerner strikes out in his attempt to connect the dots to draw conclusions for the book's subtitle, "what to do about it." Most of his prescriptions are too vague to be useful and often not clearly supported by the stories in the narrative. A few examples: "Avoid initiatives too large or too small." The Singapore success that he describes was a massive, multifaceted collection of programs that largely transformed the entire city state, too large to pass his own test. "Leverage the local academic and scientific research base." Sounds like a line from a bad business plan, and doing so is its own book-length story of broken dreams. "Remember that entrepreneurial activity does not exist in a vacuum." Swell. "Let the market provide guidance" when designing any program. Seems pretty obvious. On the other hand, given that many elected officials seem to need remedial level economics, perhaps prescriptions this simple are good.

Readers will be confused about whether Lerner believes that any government efforts in this field are ever worthwhile, or instead are subject to too high a failure rate to justify their cost. On this he contradicts himself. He says on the one hand that the failures had predictable, consistent elements that can be avoided, but elsewhere says there is no "unified field theory" to guide governments and that the "case for public intervention" rests on the shaky assumption that governments can effectively promote venture capital and entrepreneurship.

My own view is that the dots do not connect well and that there is no "unified field theory." Occasional opportunities arise for government to act that are time and location specific, which account for many of the success stories. For example, a public/private effort landed a major international research consortium, MCC, in Austin and clearly put that city on the tech map, but that was a one-time shot. My list of programs to promote entrepreneurship worthy of taxpayer money would be pretty short. Most would come under what Lerner calls "setting the table properly" -- things like good airports, roads and schools, and an efficient legal system with courts that understand business.

Lerner says that government spending, particularly defense spending, plays a huge role in spawning tech communities, with Silicon Valley being the leading example, and he is certainly right on this. But that's a different story about private companies landing government contracts, not the result of any overt policy plan. Lerner details how many of Silicon Valley's largest companies got fat on government contracts and fed the tech ecosystem that grew around them. But he does not describe any state or local economic development plan that helped land those contracts and, to my knowledge, there was none. Behind-the-scenes Federal lobbying by state and local governments is no doubt a potent factor in where Federal dollars get spent, but lobbying is not the sort of public program that Lerner is addressing in this book.

Lerner devotes his last chapter to sovereign wealth funds. Not much relevance here for Americans, unfortunately. The topic is a reminder, however, that the real money -- the massive war chests available to some governments for their economic development -- ultimately derive from American trade and current account deficits. Until the U.S. eliminates those deficits, extraordinary wealth will transfer from here to surplus countries.

Even with these drawbacks, the book still has to be labeled a must-read for folks interested in the subject because it's the only-read on point so far. Its basic tone of skepticism about the efficacy of government sponsored efforts in this field is surely appropriate, despite Lerner's ambiguity on that.

It depends
By Tech Historian
I've talked to government officials in Chile, Finland, Russia and Singapore about public funding strategies to create entrepreneurial clusters. Therefore I really wanted to like this book. It has a lot going for it. Lerner has researched an exhaustive list of government attempts to kick-start entrepreneurship and venture capital. Unfortunately the book was an unsatisfying read. It seemed like an extended set of research notes struggling for a conclusion.

The first two chapters had me really confused. The introduction rambled and after reading it twice I still wasn't clear what the point of the book was. Chapter 2, "A Look Backwards" was directionally correct, but it telegraphed the same set of vagueness that the rest of book would have. It was only by the time I got to chapter 3, "Why Should Policymakers Care?" that I finally understood Lerner was grappling with the question, "whether government policy could help entrepreneurs."

The best part of the book was Chapters 6 and 7 "Bad Design" and "Bad Implementation." Here Lerner comes closest to having an opinion and offering constructive advice. But then he loses his way with a digression on Sovereign Funds.

My MBA students seem to think the phrase "it depends" passes for an answer. Unfortunately that's what you'll get from this book.

Worth having on your shelf for the cautionary tales of failed government programs, but little constructive advice on how to get it right.

For those interested in how entrepreneurial clusters get built, read Start-up Nation: The Story of Israel's Economic Miracle and Regional Advantage: Culture and Competition in Silicon Valley and Route 128 and Startup Communities: Building an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in Your City

Solid analysis with some positive prescriptive ideas
By Brad Feld
The subtitle summarizes the book nicely - Why Public Efforts to Boost Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital Have Failed-and What to Do About It. As I continue to grind through writing Startup Communities: How To Create An Entrepreneurial Ecosystem In Your City, I'm trying to maintain a steady diet of complementary books. Lerner does a good job of dissecting government efforts and involvement around the stimulation of entrepreneurship and does a thorough job. This is a negative leaning book, but there is some positive and constructive stuff in it.
