"I belong to you."

I love this series and these characters beyond all reason. A year ago when I read Unspoken, I fell in love. I fell in love with the setting, the dialogue, the characters, honestly I just fell in love with every single aspect of Unspoken. I patiently waited for Untold to be released and then I hurriedly jumped right back into the world of Kami, Jared, Ash, Holly, Angela and Rusty. As soon as I started, I let out a content sigh of relief. It was great to be back.

"It must be nice," Holly said tiredly, "to know exactly what you want."

"Not when you know what you want, and you know you can never have it again," Jared told her.

If you have read Unspoken, or my review for it, then you will know that it had a pretty heavy duty cliffhanger. My heart was left broken into two. And, over the last year Sarah has been releasing little teasers... or should I say evil teasers, to get us ready for Untold's release. We asked for a kissing scene, and she gave us the absolute wrong people kissing... and so it went. It has been a year of torture, and I think Sarah enjoyed making us crazy.

So was the torture worth it? Absolutely. Untold picks up right after Unspoken ended. We now know that magic has returned to Sorry-in-the-Vale, and there is a war for power upon the horizon. There are secrets uncovered and even more tales to be figured out.

"I don't think you're weak," Jared said. "I want to guard you because you are important to me. Because you are -God, this is going to sound so stupid, I can never think of a way to say it -you are precious. I can never think of how to describe the value you have on me, because all the words for value suggest that you belong to me, and you don't."

Kami and Jared. *sigh* How much do I love these two? I can't even put it into words. I want nothing more than for them to end up together and happy. Untold is a roller-coaster of emotion when it comes to their relationship. There are deep and painful lows, as well as high flying happiness. I cried frustrated tears, I cried happy tears, and I cried sad tears. There were times I wanted to knock their heads together, and there were times I wanted just hug them both to let them know it was all going to be okay. Well, I hope it is all going to be okay. Seeing as how Sarah herself has in the past commented that she never made any promise that Jared and Kami would end up a couple... I guess anything is possible. But I have faith that somehow, these two will end up with their happily ever after. I hope.

"I belong to you. He has no idea what he's up against. And that will get him in the end. I believe that. Everything's going to come right for you."

"And you," Kami said again.

"If everything's right for you," Jared said at last, "everything's right for me."

The side characters are also what help make this such an amazing series. We see a completely different side to Ash in Untold. He wasn't my favorite character in Unspoken, and after this I can say my heart has warmed to him. He is such a sad and lonely character. I didn't really understand that before.

The only character that annoyed me a little was Holly. I couldn't understand what was driving her for most of the story. I kinda understand her a bit more at the end, but I still can't forgive her for some of her earlier actions. There is one scene that I will never be able to read. Because of an earlier teaser released by Sarah, I knew the scene was going to happen. But, I actually made a friend at work read it before me on our lunch hour. I didn't want to miss anything important, but it hurt my heart too much to actually read it. When you read Untold, you will know exactly what scene I mean. I still haven't read it. I've been given a cliff notes version by my friend.

Then there is of course, Angela and Rusty. Angela is great as always, she continues to prove how good a friend she is to Kami. And Rusty, what can I say about him? I love this guy so much. He plays a larger role in this book, and I loved every single minute of it. The dialogue in this series, is one of the reasons I love it so much... and Rusty is right up there with Kami when it comes to the quirky back and forth. I completely lost count at the number of times he made me laugh.

"I know what other people think about me," Rusty told her. "`That Rusty,' they say. `Charming and handsome,' they say first, of course - they're not blind. Then they add, `All the ambition and drive of a chocolate sundae.'"

What about the ending you ask? Well, it's another cliffhanger. Not nearly as painful as the one in Unspoken, but one that has left me very much wanting the final book, Unbroken. As of the time of this review, there is no exact release date planned, we only know that it will be in 2014. My guess would be around the same time as Unspoken and Untold, which was around August and September. I know this seems like a long time to wait, but hopefully we will get lots more teasers from Sarah to make it go by at a swifter pace.

However, if they are as evil as last time... maybe we are best just waiting for Unbroken's release. I shall be off now to crawl into my hole to wait out the next year...

Not for Me

I loved the beginning of book 1. It was obviously a paranormal romance, but it was also really funny. By the second half, I was starting to lose interest, but thought maybe the second book would reclaim my interest. It didn't. I ended up skimming because I couldn't maintain enough interest. The ending is horrible. I'm all for cliff hangers, but I now know there's such a thing as taking the cliff hanger too far. Cliffhangers are supposed to make you anxious to read the next book in the series, or make you really think about the characters and their situation. The ending of this one did neither for me. Overall, not very interesting. Bad ending. A little bit of humor. A little bit of romance. If there is a book 3, I won't read it.

I have loved Sarah Rees Brennan's work since the first thing I read by her. I have always found her to be endlessly entertaining, with a light, deft hand displaying a skilled wordsmith who brings every world she writes to life. Her books are humorous and well paced, and her characters very easy to fall in love with. I loved Untold. I think her latest series, filled with secrets and magic, high school reporters and high school slackers, is for those who read the YA genre especially, but also open to a wider audience who wish for a light read about an English valley full of mysteries. The plot is fast paced and and entertaining, and the little twists thrown in enjoyable. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys YA books, or books about magic, or strong, independent girls and women.

Some good stories

If you understand that these stories were written for children a very long time ago by simple people you can appreciate them. Gripping page-turners they are not. They are typically very repetitive and some of them don't make any sense at all. However, if you are interested in this kind of folk tale you will enjoy them. Children will enjoy them.

What a beautiful book on the outside...

and great tales on the inside. The binding and quality of this book are excellent also. I'm so glad this was reprinted, and so well too.
As for the tales, interesting and enjoyable for young and old alike. I like reading of folk tales, for myself and to the kids, because I think one can learn about human character and behavior through them, not to mention the beliefs of a culture.

James Enge is the author of Blood of Ambrose (nominated for a World Fantasy Award), This Crooked Way, The Wolf Age, Travellers' Rest, A Guile of Dragons (A Tournament of Shadows Book One), Wrath-Bearing Tree (A Tournament of Shadows Book Two), and The Wide World's End (A Tournament of Shadows Book Three) . His fiction has appeared in Black Gate, Flashing Swords, and Every Day Fiction. He is an instructor of classical languages at a Midwestern university.

Beguiled by the Guile

High Fantasy often faces the criticism that it is a poor reflection of the works that have gone before it, most notably Tolkien. By employing the same basic mythos with a highly Western European (and generally, British) composition, many chide that too much of fantasy falls into this trap and needs to be refreshed with something edgier, or something more original. The end result is generally a poor facsimile that inevitably fails to shine in comparison.

"A Guile of Dragons" is not some mere copy.

Yes, it employs many of the elements that we might quickly label a High Fantasy trope - dwarves, dragons, ancient terrors, and the name Merlin (or at least his son, Morlock). Its important to remember that it is not what elements a writer uses, but how they use them, that brings distinction. Enge does not treat these elements lightly - the history and culture of the dwarves alone are an integral part of this story, hinting at a depth we never see a bottom to. The shortness of the work (@300 pages) is belied by the depth and fullness of the characters that populate it. These are thick characters, populating the pages not because they fill a need but because it is their story to tell.

Set as a prequel for Enge's character, Ambrosius, aka Morlock syr Theorn, "A Guile of Dragons" introduces us to a small cast of recurring characters, each of whom demonstrates a depth and fullness usually reserved for the titular character. Not having read the other books in this milieu proved to not be a problem - as a prequel, it is a well contained volume, beginning with the birth of Morlock, son of Merlin, and the circumstances that place young Morlock in the care of the dwarves of Thrymhaiam to the north. This is also the story of Morlock's first real adventure (other feats are alluded to, but nothing so grand), following a metre and pace that is reminiscent of a classic saga even when the story telling is modern.

For in the Northold, the dwarves find themselves cut off from the Graith of Guardians as a guile of dragons invades, reigniting the Longest War from before the dawn of history. Morlock, a thaen of the Graith, adopted son of the dwarves, trapped between both worlds, faces the failings of each as he is thrust into battling the dragons themselves.

Enge, who's unsecret real world identity is a classics professor, demonstrates that a writer is influenced by the books and life you lead. "A Guile of Dragons" is a worthy epic for any fantasy reader, containing a surprising depth and fullness that is rarely found in so short a book. I cannot say more about this book without spoiling it, so I will just say that I wholly and heartily recommend that it be read.

Morlock's backstory is as good as the three previous books

Morlock Ambrosius, son of Merlin and Nimue from the Arthurian legends, has a crooked shoulder, a resistance to fire and a dark pysche that probably would result in a 21st century prescription for Welbutrin.

He returns in "Guile of Dragons" (Pyr, $17.95, 278 pages), which is book one of the Tournament of Shadows, and which appears to be James Enge's backstory for the Morlock readers have encountered in three previous books. This is all good news, for Enge is a more than capable writer and Morlock is one of the more intriguing antiheroes out there right now, given his struggles to survive in a bleak pre-industrial world.

In "Guile of Dragons," Morlock is a young soldier, of sorts, who gets involved when dragons invade the territory he must protect. At the same time, Morlock must deal with revelations regarding Merlin, his arrogant father who was imprisoned by another wizard before Morlock was born, as well as his surrogate father, the leader of the dwarves who raised him.

But don't think that means readers must plow through long passages of Freudian patriarchy issues - the action is constant, the writing crisp and the extra depth added to the narrative by those paternal issues only adds to the book. So if you haven't yet read any of Enge's books, this is the place to start - and you have a lot of good reading ahead of you.

I really enjoyed this book and it definitely would recommend all three books. Exciting and keeps you eager to see what happens next. Plus - all three books have been completed so you won't have to wait forever for the last book - by that time you've forgotten what you'd read in the last 2 books.

She has grown up with a friend of her parents, a woman she calls Aunt Em, and despite the war and its deprivations, she has made a good life for herself in England with her foster mother. Irene N. Watts was born in Berlin, Germany. She arrived in England by Kindertransport on December 10, 1938. She was seven years old and traveled alone. As a playwright and writer who has worked throughout Canada and Europe, she has published many award-winning books for children, including Good-bye Marianne, Finding Sophie, Remember Me, Flower, When the Bough Breaks, Clay Man: The Golem of Prague, No Moon, and Touched by Fire. Her books have been translated into several languages, including Italian, French, and Dutch. Irene N. Watts lives in Vancouver. The author lives in Vancouver, BC.

An Absolute Must Read

My Thoughts:
I really enjoyed this book. In the past we have taught about the Kindertransport in my class. However, I liked this much more than the book the county had picked for us. It gave us a realistic look into how children were actually treated. Those of us who have studied and taught about the life of a Jew during the times of the Nazis know that they had a lot of persecution to deal with. Many parents sent their young children off to England for safe keeping, never knowing if they would be seen again. They believed that the people taking in their children would treat them like they would their own. This was not always true. Many of them as you learn from the stories in this book wanted them for free labor, others saw them as traitors or demons. I felt for Marianne the main character of the first two stories. She is bounced around form one home to another. Mistreated, thrown out or forced to live in opposition to her religious upbringing. Sophia, the young girl Marianne meets on the train is treated much better. Her “Aunt Em” is a friend of the family and treats her as if she is a relative. There is very little written about this time and it is refreshing to find a book that does such a wonderful job of telling it, even though the story is historical fiction. This will be a great addition to my bookshelves at school.

Beautiful, well written, touching....

Wow! What an intricate, beautiful, touching story. So many books about the World War II are written from the perspective of those who suffered in the midst of the war in Europe or in concentration camps. Almost ten thousand children, predominantly Jewish, had the fortune of being evacuated to Britain in the nine months prior to the beginning of World War II on the Kindertransport. These children lived in foster homes or group homes, with a small number living with relatives. Although their lives were spared, Kindertransport children were not immune from suffering because of the war. Escape from Berlin follows the story of 2 Kindertransport girls and the chaos, pain, bigotry, suffering, and yes joy of their new live in the UK. Reading this book, I was transported to that time, seeing the world through the lives of these young girls, each with a radically different experience of life in England. I was touched by the stories of Marianne and Sophie as they navigated a foreign land which was their home and yet not their home.

I would recommend this highly, and it is appropriate for middle school on up. It is on my "Read Again" list and I will have my teen daughters read this for school.

Not many books are 5 stars in my opinion. This one is.

Good Introduction to Ayurveda

I think this is a really great beginning to the study of Ayurveda. It isn't presumptuous and it takes time to really explain the basic philosophy Ayurveda is based on. I really liked that it was written for "westerners". I feel like I have a good base for deeper study and like I understand and can employ a lot of Ayurvedic tenets.

Covers all the basics

This book is great in that it allows you to know more about your body and what you should and shouldn't eat. It was a relief to read this as I have tried so many different ways of eating: palea, no carb, smoothies, vegetarian, etc...
I recommend this for everyone since it is based on an ancient way of eating that most people are so confused on due to the mass amounts of information out there.

Aviezer Tucker (Austin, TX) is the author of Our Knowledge of the Past: A Philosophy of Historiography; The Philosophy and Politics of Czech Dissidence: From Patocka to Havel; and numerous scholarly articles. Plato is now accessible!

Plato's //Dialogues// are the essential starting point for a basic understanding of Western philosophy; Socrates has long been regarded the father of critical thinking. However, the intervening years have obscured their meaning; cultural differences and translation inaccuracies have made reading Plato extremely difficult, and understanding almost impossible without some kind of guide. // Plato for Everyone// is exactly that needed guide for today's readers. Understanding the barriers to understanding Plato (whose Dialogues are the only record we have of the philosopher Socrates' arguments), the author has rewritten it to be much more accessible, while still remaining true to the spirit of the originals. Four of the Socratic dialogues, as well as Plato's recount of Socrates' death, are placed in a new context of our modern America, with a modern conversational tone and a storyline, rather than the confusing script of before; this modern retelling clarifies how timeless these dialogues really are. An extremely helpful introduction gives an overview of each dialogue and the modern change, and why the author set it the way he did, with some of his own observations.
The first dialogue is after //The Crito//, which questions the duty of a citizen to his country, even when the law is wrong or unjust. The original was Socrates' choice between exile or imprisonment; the modern analog is self-exile or compulsory military service; Socrates has been drafted into an unjust war against which he has protested and demonstrated, and his friends try to persuade him to flee the country.
The second is from //Meno//, which in the original questions the meaning of virtue. Instead of using the word 'virtue', which the author feels is too archaic for modern audiences, he says the Greek word was closer to our modern word 'cool', so the characters debate the meaning of 'what is cool'. I did find the translation from 'virtue' to 'cool' mildly irritating; I kept getting distracted by the talk about 'coolness' all the time; I think virtue would have done just as well. Still, it was a helpful discussion. The third dialogue, from the //Euthyphro// examines the difference between philosophy and religion, and especially where the idea of something being 'good' comes from. Socrates' //Apology//, his self-defense at his trial, raises issues of searching for truth and living justly even when it is personally inconvenient or even fatal. Finally, //Phaedo// discusses Socrates' views on death, dying, and an afterlife.
The author remains true to the conversation in the original, even when he personally does not agree with the conclusions. These retellings were easy to understand; the reasoning was clear, and the author gave useful explanatory notes that told when, for example, a character changed his position or went from a belligerent attitude to an inquiring one. Asking the same basic questions as they did in Ancient Greece, Socrates and his friends find that the overarching questions of duty, virtue, piety, goodness, and death are as relevant today as they were then. There is still plenty of room for different arguments than Socrates and friends addressed. After two millenia, various thinkers have questioned many if not most or all of Socrates' premises and arrived at conclusions of their own; additionallly, new information from scientific studies, especially in biology, psychology, and neurology have reshaped our understanding of many issues, which brings some of Socrates' assumptions into question. The author lightly brings up some of these issues, to help the reader understand a little of where what Mortimer Adler calls The Great Conversation has led in the intervening years, but makes it clear that the words he has put into Socrates' mouth carry the same intent as Socrates' own. After reading //Plato for Everyone//, you start to appreciate why he has been the base for Western philosophy for the last two thousand years.

My introduction to Plato was many years ago in college. I read only what the professor assigned, and promptly went on to the next assignment. How much I missed those many years ago. Prof. Tucker has put Plato's wisdom in a modern context. For the non-philosophy student who had difficulty with the formal language of the Greek philosophers as translated, this exposure works!

About the Author
William C. Harris (Phoenix, AZ) is the president and CEO of Science Foundation Arizona. He is the former founding Director General of Science Foundation Ireland, president and executive director of the Columbia University Biosphere 2 Center in Arizona, and the head of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate of the National Science Foundation, among other executive, research, and academic positions.

Steven Beschloss (Scottsdale, AZ) is an award-winning journalist who has written about business, economics, urban affairs, and international affairs for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New Republic, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, Parade Magazine, and many other media outlets. Chosen Journalist of the Year in Virginia and honored for his writing by the American Society of Journalists and Authors, he was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his seven-part series in the Virginian Pilot examining boom and bust in the southern United States.

Insightful and Informative

ADRIFT is essential reading for anyone concerned about the challenges facing America today. It provides a clear analysis of many of our most pressing problems and offers pragmatic solutions drawn from real world experience. The authors draw equally on ideas from the left and the right, making recommendations based on what works, not ideology. It's a refreshingly adult approach that we see far too little of these days. In addition, although the book deals with complex issues, the clear writing style and lack of jargon make it an easy read.

An Important Read

I found this short, but important, book to be one of the most compelling reads I have had in a long time. I picked it up and opened it just to get an inkling of what was inside, only to find myself unable to put it down. The authors have done a superb job of encapsulating in a balanced manner the marked decline this country has experienced over the past decades within the political, intellectual, social, and educational spheres. Rather than being a whiny polemic, ADRIFT reviews the issues, and offers real and implementable solutions. The writing is engaging--like good music! While some will argue about particular points here and there, none can deny the primary theme: this nation has lost ground and runs the risk of becoming second-rate, unless fundamental change is instituted.
