Review
This book was a marathon to write - from the first evening I sat at the computer and decided to begin writing to the paperback being delivered to my house, it was nearly 3 years in the making. I wrote this book during a very dark time in my life and I believe the darkness is reflected in the writing. However, I believe there is powerful insight that can really be used to speak into people's lives as a result.

Aside from the financial side of things, this book cost me a massive amount emotionally and even physically as the worst event of my entire life (and the amazing breakthrough which came as a result) is recorded in these pages and was written only a few weeks after it was experienced. I am pleased that this book has now been signed with Creation House publishing in Florida, USA as I believe it will give me a greater stage to be able to share my story with others and hopefully bring breakthrough into their lives as well.

From the Author
Graham Aitchison's latest book No Way Out But Through is thestory of one man's lifelong battle with mental illness and his iron-claddetermination to overcome this devastating affliction. Graham's firmly heldbelief is that the darkest and most painful areas in one's heart and life mustbe walked through in order for them to heal, rather than avoided, hence thetitle of his book.

Raw, powerful and brutally honest, this book gives a look atmental illness not often seen from the perspective of one who has not onlywalked through it but made enormous strides in defeating the power of mentalsuffering over his life. Graham opens up his whole life without holding back inthe hope that his story of overcoming such adversity will give insight, inspiration and hope to those who have also suffered from mental illness or knowsomeone who does.

About the Author
Graham Aitchison is twenty-nine years old, and has held a strong Christian faith for the past ten years. His journey brought him face-to-face with hardship, including mental illness, long periods of unemployment, and severe physical sickness; however, each trial provided unique wisdom and insight, and enabled him to grow in Christ. Graham has preached to congregations on several occasions.

A Powerful Journey from Darkness to light
By John L
This book follows the self-biographical journey of one young man from a place of deep darkness to brilliant light. It takes the reader through the full gamut of the darkest human emotions to eventually find a path to healing and salvation of the soul, spirit, emotions and psyche.

The power of Graham's emotions to overcome and defeat him time and time again, and the vicious cycle of self-destruction beggars belief as to how he managed to survive long enough to find salvation. His remarkable story provides evidence of the healing power of God to overcome some of the worst issues of humanity.

Graham's salvation came in part through the love and spiritual guidance of his mother and other Christian mentors. Through their presence he found God and discovered there is a path that leads from darkness to light. But it was predominantly the power and working of God in his life that led to his ultimate release from darkness.

Parts of this book are not an easy read as Graham faces his internal demons. But in each case as he works with God he finds a pathway through the darkness and discovers that the only way to go when you are in the depths is to go up. Over time and through various events in his life, the Lord takes Graham to places he would rather not go, but are necessary if he is to heal fully. Progressively the Lord peels back the onion exposing successive and deeper layers of darkness in his life, and as the darkness becomes exposed by the light it washes away what was once fearful and horrid in this man to cleanse him of his past and lead him to a better future.

I would recommend this book to anyone suffering the darkness of human emotion, depressions, fear, anger and so on, as it provides a hope for salvation. It doesn't matter how far down in darkness you may fall. As Graham discovered, God can and will lift you out of it. His story here shows as much and it should encourage anyone going through similar circumstances to know that in God there is hope.

Refreshing Honesty--Raw and Real
By Amazon Customer
Mental illness, spiritual warfare, addiction, bullying, rage, hopelessness, physical sickness, abuse, emotional torture-Graham Aitchison divulges the deepest secrets of his life's journey with startling transparency in No Way Out But Through.

Anyone who has experienced the pain of the above mentioned issues will find themselves nodding in agreement as they read Graham's story. The text is refreshingly real--as if you are sitting in a living room listening to the author tell you his story first-hand. It's rare that a book is written from the view of "sharing" rather than "preaching". Along with the "realness" of the authors journey is a manuscript packed with spiritual truth.

I found this to be a fascinating read once I got into the meat of the story. So much of Graham's life reflects my own struggles with mental illness. Often the journey through mental/emotional sickness leads one into isolation, misunderstanding, and intense loneliness, but knowing others have suffered as you have brings great comfort. Even for the reader who has not experienced such things, there is much to learn from No Way Out But Through. Graham's book provides a resource for the confused family members and frustrated friends of those who do deal with these issues. All around it's a book many people could benefit from.

What I found most interesting was Graham's discussion of Christianity and mental illness. No doubt this is a subject of much debate in the Church today leaving the mentally distressed guilt-ridden and most everyone else critical of such "mental" experiences.

"Throughout everything I was learning to break through, there was one essential factor to the whole process that I became more and more aware of over time - the great love and endless patience that God has for people, especially those who struggle with any form of mental illness."

Graham acknowledges the spiritual warfare at play within his mind as well as how God brought him through overwhelming, debilitating darkness. Much of his journey to healing started with honesty within himself and before God. Many of the points he makes throughout the book remind me of what I learned in the 12-step programs I've been through. I especially appreciated his conversation regarding change within the heart rather than change in one's circumstances.

"Change for the better starts from within, and will then eventually be followed by external change - not the other way around. We will never solve our own problems through trying to blame others for what are actually our own responsibilities, nor will we solve our problems through continued disregard of our own emotions and hearts, and through listening to an increasingly shallow and self-serving society."

"Modern society in many ways tells people to look for peace and happiness in external circumstances, hence the abundance of consumerism. Christ's way of thinking, which He passes on to those who follow him, encourages the individual to seek out true, lasting peace and understanding through looking honestly into the mirror and journeying with God through the parts of themselves they would rather avoid."

Admittedly not everyone will relate to Graham's story, but plenty of people will relate or know someone who can. If you've ever wondered what goes on in the mind of someone suffering with mental illness such as depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, severe anxiety, anger, or bullying, then you will learn much from Graham's story. No Way Out But Through reads like a journal-raw and real.

"God's way of thinking is a total contradiction to the world's way of thinking. The world's way of thinking encourages dishonesty, shallowness, irresponsibility and pride. God's way of thinking encourages honesty, depth, personal responsibility and humility."

Thankfully, this is exactly what Graham has done--spoken with depth, honesty, responsibility and humility.

(I purchased this book with my own money and did not receive it in exchange for a good review. The opinions expressed here were my own. --Rebecca [...])

Informatics Needs and Challenges in Cancer Research: Workshop Summary, by Sharyl J. Nass, Theresa Wizemann, National Cancer Policy Forum,

As information technology becomes an integral part of health care, it is important to collect and analyze data in a way that makes the information understandable and useful. Informatics tools--which help collect, organize, and analyze data--are essential to biomedical and health research and development. The field of cancer research is facing an overwhelming deluge of data, heightening the national urgency to find solutions to support and sustain the cancer informatics ecosystem. There is a particular need to integrate research and clinical data to facilitate personalized medicine approaches to cancer prevention and treatment--for example, tailoring treatment based on an individual patient's genetic makeup as well as that of the tumor --and to allow for more rapid learning from patient experiences.

To further examine informatics needs and challenges for 21st century biomedical research, the IOM's National Cancer Policy Forum held a workshop February 27-28, 2012. The workshop was designed to raise awareness of the critical and urgent importance of the challenges, gaps and opportunities in informatics; to frame the issues surrounding the development of an integrated system of cancer informatics for acceleration of research; and to discuss solutions for transformation of the cancer informatics enterprise. Informatics Needs and Challenges in Cancer Research: Workshop Summary summarizes the workshop.

Wild Tales: A Rock & Roll Life, by Graham Nash

From Graham Nash—the legendary musician and founding member of the iconic bands Crosby, Stills & Nash and The Hollies—comes a candid and riveting autobiography that belongs on the reading list of every classic rock fan.

Graham Nash's songs defined a generation and helped shape the history of rock and roll—he’s written over 200 songs, including such classic hits as "Carrie Anne," “On A Carousel,” "Simple Man," "Our House," “Marrakesh Express,” and "Teach Your Children." From the opening salvos of the British Rock Revolution to the last shudders of Woodstock, he has rocked and rolled wherever music mattered. Now Graham is ready to tell his story: his lower-class childhood in post-war England, his early days in the British Invasion group The Hollies; becoming the lover and muse of Joni Mitchell during the halcyon years, when both produced their most introspective and important work; meeting Stephen Stills and David Crosby and reaching superstardom with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; and his enduring career as a solo musician and political activist.  Nash has valuable insights into a world and time many think they know from the outside but few have experienced at its epicenter, and equally wonderful anecdotes about the people around him: the Beatles, the Stones, Hendrix, Cass Elliot, Dylan, and other rock luminaries. From London to Laurel Canyon and beyond, Wild Tales is a revealing look back at an extraordinary life—with all the highs and the lows; the love, the sex, and the jealousy; the politics; the drugs; the insanity—and the sanity—of a magical era of music.

From Booklist
Nash, a founding member of the Hollies and (later) Crosby, Stills, and Nash, has finally written an autobiography. Taking us from his childhood to the present day, the book is a portrait not merely of a rock ’n’ roll star, but also of a man who has, it seems, constantly been seeking new challenges. (The formation of Crosby, Stills, and Nash came about because Nash was frustrated with the Hollies; in the late 1980s, having achieved pretty much everything it was possible to achieve in popular music, Nash returned to his first childhood passion, photography.) The book’s title is a bit misleading: this isn’t a collection of “wild tales” about the author’s rock ’n’ roll life; there are some such tales, of course—the story of Nash’s friend and bandmate David Crosby’s long battle with drug addiction, for example—but overall the book is simply the story of a man’s life and his unshakeable passion to express himself through his art. Fans might say the book is long overdue, but it was definitely worth the wait. --David Pitt

"Though CSN and CSNY made more than their share of beautiful music together and lived in a kind of hippie heaven replete with mansions, money and free love, Nash doesn't hesitate to share the dark side of stardom, too, particularly the drug-fueled ego trips and meltdowns that so often derailed the group....[But] the reader is inclined to believe that the drugs, the women, the accolades and the money were never the point. 'It always comes down to the music,' Nash says. And that's what makes this trip worth taking." –USA Today

Great Read about the Musical Revolution of the Century
By randulo
As a musician living in the times Nash writes about, it's almost like going back there and reliving it, without the danger of OD or crab lice. The musicians he played with and talks about were some of the most important influences to the music we loosely call "rock". Back then, when you first listened to Jimi Hendrix, as he describes, it was like a spiritual awakening. That music can be this deep, sound this good. As a friend of mine said, in the intro to Little Wing, "He's painting a picture!" And so the poetry and unique harmonies of CSN were pretty radical back in the day. You listened to music and if gave you chills. Playing it was the same, you hear your fellow musicians play sounds of which even they didn't know the true source. The descriptions of the characters are graphic and sensual.

Better than the First
By G. Peter Wityk
I read the first in the series and liked it. But, this was better. Perhaps it is because it concentrated on John H. ( Doc ) Holiday, Ned Buntline and Thomas Edison. Having the focus tighter, having the Earps and Bat Masterson only be peripheral players and having the freedom to avoid the known events around the OK Corral might have played a part in this. The American Indian magic and the steampunk science are still a major part of the story. But, as it should be, the ability of the characters determines the outcome of their efforts. Resnick is a blast to read and I think that he had as much fun writing it as I did reading it. I hope that you get as much enjoyment from this book as I did!

For lovers of steampunk fiction, not of historical fiction
By Randi "Doc" P
If one is a fan of steampunk, I imagine this novel to be incredibly enjoyable. The descriptions of the gadgets are myriad, and to be fair, at times it seems as if the world inhabited by our characters is the real main focus of this novel, instead of either the Doctor or the Kid.

The history is, of course, revisionist, but anyone who knows anything about steampunk does not expect perfect history. The trouble, for me at least, comes in the lack of attention to the historical natures, at least, of our characters. Doc talks very much like Kate who talks very much like Henry (Antrim, our Billy the Kid). We never seem to get into the minds of any of our characters, despite having a rich buffet of fascinating historical figures to choose from in his novel.

Many people do enjoy this novel, and steampunk fans seem to love it, but be warned if you're looking for a Doc Holliday novel, there are better options.

Hi Ho Steam Punk Away!
By Regrae
I loved The Wild Wild West TV show. When I read Resnick's The Buntline Special, I fell in love with steampunk literature. Resnick has been a favorite of mine ever since I read his Starship series. Resnick has a wicked sense of humor and infuses this humor into his characters. He creates characteres with swagger, brashness, and humor, just like the James West and Artimus Gordon. Resnick has created an alternate West where the US can not go pass the Mississippi River because of the magic powers of the Indian medience men. In his West, Edison, Buntline, and Doc Holiday try to fight this magic with science and cold lead. Modern science in its infancy combined with real shootists of the time period create a wild wild West that is refreshing and a hoot. Resnick's witty writing style zips the reader along with humor, historical facts, and roaring six guns. These weird wild West tales are quick fun reads and are like a cool cocktail on a hot day. Pick one up and enjoy.

Review
"Andrew P. Mayer's The Falling Machine enjoys the promise of a glorious conceit that the book delivers on—steampunk superheroes in Gilded Age New York City. The first of Mayer's Society of Steam trilogy, this book offers cocked-eyed adventure and the high camp of steampunk wrapped around a story of moral choice, family loyalty and the ultimate question of who gets to be counted as a person. A ripping yarn that strikes all the right notes, The Falling Machine will delight and entertain you." --Jay Lake, Campbell Award winning author of Mainspring and Green

"If Stan Lee had lived in the 1880s, this is the book he would have written—steampunk superheroes. Filled with larger than life characters, cliffhanger action, and ingenious gadgets so richly realized you'll feel the steam hissing from them, at its heart, it's a two-fisted meditation on the mythic glories of heroism and the tragic frailties of the heroes themselves." --Clay & Susan Griffith, authors of The Greyfriar (Vampire Empire Book 1)

Slow Pace and Distracting Errors Interfere with Story
By A B Adams
Several reviewers have already commented on THE FALLING MACHINE's slow pace, and I agree in particular with someone's statement that it reads too much like an intended comic book. That might sound strange considering the appeal for most readers will be the Victorian superhero scenario. I, too, was drawn in by that concept. That said, it was Justin Gerard's cover art that caught my attention, with the book itself falling short of its expectation. This may speak to the need for the visual side of the superhero genre. However, with or without the illustrations, many superhero stories succeed by merit of their complex characters, whereas THE FALLING MACHINE resorts too comfortably to stereotypes. None of the old men are any better than the sum of their steampunk costumes, and the villains--crucial to any superhero story--are all but invisible throughout.

What I haven't seen mentioned yet is something that proved highly distracting, which was the book's large amount of typos--usually missing words or spelling errors. Whether or not these were the author's original errors, the fact that so many exist in the published book (I'd say one every two pages or so) isn't a great advertisement for the publisher. Though a minor consideration in a stronger, more established work, something like this can be a death sentence for a debut novel, especially when combined with its other weaknesses. For me, these included a lack of perspective (never seeing or understanding the things that seemed most interesting), a plot that progressed far too slowly, and untapped potential in a setting and era that should have provided as much historical, atmospheric, and psychological context as some reviewers have claimed they did.

While I may have read the sequel if it had belonged to this volume, I don't care enough about the story now to go out and get the rest of it.

Steampunk + Superheroes = Fantastic debut
By J Smith
I'll be honest. I didn't research this book before I bought it. I knew nothing of the author, or the plot, or any other significant details. I picked it up on a whim on my last visit to the bookstore. And somehow, it turned out to be one of the better novels I've read this year.

The story goes like this (spoiler free!): Sarah Stanton, daughter of one of the leaders of the Paragons, a group of heroes that protect New York City, witnesses the murder of one of the founders of the same group, and becomes embroiled in a large scale plot that deals with themes of betrayal, aging, and the advent of technology, and the dangers and wonders that come with it. Also, last but not least, it muses on what really makes a hero, beyond a mask and fancy leather costume. The story manages to be easy to follow and fun, while addressing topics that can get pretty heavy.

This is one of the best concepts for a steampunk novel I've ever seen. I've always wanted to like this genre more than the novels I've read in it have allowed me to. But too many of them get caught up in reveling in their own creativity, wanting to put their ideas for cool, weird technology in the forefront and putting character development and story into the proverbial caboose.

But this novel never falls into that trap. It's tight, consistent, and uses the setting and genre as frosting on the cake. The focus is always on the story, which never really has a slow point that made me want to stop reading. That's when you know you have a good novel on your hands.

Seriously. If you've wanted to like Steampunk, enjoy the idea of superheroes in the 1880s, or just love a novel with vivid characters and a beautiful, creative world, get this book.

You'll be glad you did. Now to wait until November to read the second one...

Good but with a few holes
By Timothy
Andrew Mayer's 'The Falling Machine' is the latest addition to the Steampunk sub-genre and stands out from its fellows. It does not contain zombies, vampires, magic or graphic sex. The current trend in Steampunk seems to find corseted heroines fighting the undead or some supernatural menace and in this regard 'The Falling Machine' is a refreshing find.
The story follows The Paragons, a society of New York's elite thinkers and inventors who have used technology to transform themselves into superheroes, protecting those who cannot protect themselves.
Sarah Stanton is the daughter of the "The Industrialist" one of the society's founding members. Her mentor, Sir Dennis Darby is also a founding member and a technological genius responsible for creating the fantastic inventions that give the Paragons their powers.
When Darby is murdered, Sarah is suddenly thrust into the middle of a conspiracy to bring down the Paragons themselves. Behind the plot is the mysterious Children of Eschaton. Sarah tries to solve the mystery but as a woman in a man's world, her intelligence and creativity are constantly being undermined by men who see her as nothing beyond her gender.
The story moves at lightening quick speed and I made it through the book in just a few sittings. Mayer goes to great lengths to explain the inventions. This really helps to develop the atmosphere of the book as you get something of an understanding for how the machines work. The steampunk world is very much a comic book one as the heroes wear costumes and have secret identities. In this it is a little difficult to take the story seriously. It feels as though we are reading a comic book without pictures. Imagine your first encounter with Superman being a novel about a man in blue tights. Several of the characters themselves think the costumes are ridiculous so in this I suppose it still works.
While the story is engaging, it is ultimately a cliff hanger, and several elements of the back story are lacking. For instance one of the characters is introduced as Sarah's stepbrother however we never hear about a stepmother. I figured out at about the last quarter of the book that her father took the boy in and raised him as his own child, but this is never really explained. Also Sarah, as a child, discovered her father was a Paragon and accidentally revealed his identity. This resulted in a super villain kidnapping and killing her mother. We don't really get an explanation of this incident nor does Sarah seem to be traumatized for inadvertently causing her mother's death.
I will read the forthcoming books in the trilogy, and for Steampunk enthusiasts tired of the same rut of zombies and magic this will be a welcome treat. I wish that Mayer had explored some of the back story a bit more to give us a better sense of who the characters were and their relationships to each other. Perhaps these issues will be resolved in the other books but for now, having to wait until November for book two, this volume left too many questions unanswered.

The Kingmakers (Vampire Empire Book 3), by Clay Griffith, Susan Griffith

The epic Vampire Empire trilogy rushes to a heart-wrenching conclusion of honor and love, hatred and vengeance, sacrifice and loss.

A war to the death.

Empress Adele has launched a grand crusade against the vampire clans of the north. Prince Gareth, the vampire lord of Scotland, serves the Equatorian cause, fighting in the bloody trenches of France in his guise as the dashing Greyfriar. But the human armies are pinned down, battered by harsh weather and merciless attacks from vampire packs.

To even the odds, Adele unleashes the power of her geomancy, a fearsome weapon capable of slaughtering vampires in vast numbers. However, the power she expends threatens her own life even as she questions the morality of such a weapon.

As the war turns ever bloodier and Adele is threatened by betrayal, Gareth faces a terrible choice. Their only hope is a desperate strike against the lord of the vampire clans--Gareth's brother, Cesare. It is a gamble that could win the war or signal the final days of the Greyfriar.

Powerful, Perfection
By VampireNovelFan
Epic doesn't even begin to describe Kingmakers, the final novel of the Vampire Empire trilogy. Each installment is better than the last; Susan and Clay Griffith have done an amazing job at building momentum to this moment and it really doesn't disappoint.

Adele leads the war against vampires to the north and Gareth is getting first hand experience with the it, fighting for Adele in the front lines of battle. But the vampires are formidable opponents and have gained the upper hand, quickly bringing the humans to their knees. Something must be done and Adele's geomancy powers may be the ace in the hole that the human race needs to win once and for all.

The last novel is jam packed with story, but there's a lot of action so it gets going much faster than its predecessors. Politics, betrayal, and new revelations are key to Adele and Gareth's development. They are the heart of this saga after all. But with their seemingly impossible love, can the heart still beat?

Adele has matured wonderfully over the novels and she's become really admirable. I liked seeing her in a major position of power, strategizing and making difficult decisions that challenge morality. It's a nice departure from other urban fantasy novels where the heroines start at the bottom and have to work their way up. She's on a slippery slope as she tries to control her geomancy powers, which may be dangerous to more than solely vampires.

Gareth is as wonderful as always with his selflessness. He's even adorable at times as he still tries to fully understand human customs and history. His light moments with Adele really gave me the case of the warm fuzzies, if only because it feels so fleeting as the pull of his vampire heritage requires that he finally face his brother once and for all. That, and her powers seriously conflict with his entire being on a biological level beyond their control.

This book has pretty much everything you could ask for and you'll experience practically every emotion while reading it. The ending is very powerful, enough that you may want to have kleenex on hand, but I won't spoil it any further. My only complaint is that I want more. I love this world and I'm sad to see it end; though unfortunately that must happen to all good things...

Well done to the Griffiths on their fantastic work! This is definitely one of my favorite trilogies ever.

Love.
By Dani
4.5/5 stars

The human advance has been halted at Grenoble, and the situation is dire.

The newly crowned Empress Adele is fighting a costly war against the European vampire clans. What was once successful Imperial siege on the vampire city has been turned around on the weary and beleaguered Equitorian troops. The human cost has been staggering. Now winter has set in and supplies dwindle as the vampires close in around them on every side. Retreat is no longer possible, the ammunition and food are almost gone. The Equitorian soldiers have reached an impasse - they must stand or die.

Then the Empress unleashes the Empire's greatest, most potent weapon - herself. But while her geomancy could be used to save thousands upon thousands, potentially winning the war against vampires, the wielding of so much raw power presents too many unknowns and consequences that Adele is unsure she could live with. It is a war that cannot be merely won on the battlefield, but with ruthless cunning and calculated subterfuge if Gareth & Adele want to beat vampire prince Cesare at his own deadly game.

Adele. The situation has escalated tenfold since the reader has last seen Adele and her beloved Greyfriar. Cesare continues to pursue his bid for power over Britain and the vampire clans, as Adele settles into her role as a ruler of an empire at war. It is a daunting task as she must make decisions that impact countless lives, must mediate disputes between fractious members of her war council, must guard her secrets from those who might betray her, and above all she must present an authoritative, formidable, decisive front to those who would seek out and exploit her weaknesses. She's been matured by political games, loss, death, and war. And more than that, this is a life she's been groomed for. Yet even so, the knowledge of what might be required of her to save her people, the knowledge that she's sending men to their deaths every day, the knowledge that sometimes a ruler must do what they must to protect something greater than themselves, all of this weighs heavily on Adele's shoulders. For underneath the cool, regal facade she must maintain, lies an uncertain, conflicted young woman of twenty.

I love how Clay & Susan have written Adele. From first meeting this young, slightly, naïve girl in The Greyfriar to seeing her stubbornly claim her birthright as well as her love for Greyfriar in The Rift Walker to watching her rule and wage war in The Kingmakers, Adele has grown into a character that I absolutely love. She's so strong, so determined, so courageous, so loving, so optimistic, and so unwilling to admit defeat. And I think that's why I love her the most- that last attribute. That she will not give up fighting for what she believes is right, and just, and good even in the face of insurmountable odds. And her tenacity serves her and her people well.

Gareth. Gareth in The Kingmakers is facing a bit of an existential crisis. He feels that the need for Greyfriar is fading in the new political landscape of war-torn Europe. He wonders at the futility of Greyfriar, the impact he's made as the masked hero, as he tries to discern where he fits into the grand scheme of things in the here and now - as a vampire with a conscience, as the prodigal vampire prince who turned his back on his own kind to protect the humans of the north. Gareth has a wonderful duality to him. He's a fierce warrior, a ruthless vigilante, and a remorseless killer exacting justice upon those he feels deserve it. He's a cunning vampire prince - pragmatic and practical. He does what he must and can play the game. But when surrounded the small circle of those he cares for and trusts, he's gentle and kind, with a hilariously dry wit. He's fascinated by human customs, art, history, music and literature, and these things bring out a wonderfully shy, childlike curiosity about the world that absolutely melts my heart. Another thing that melts my heart? The way he loves Adele, wholly and completely.

Gareth & Adele. Their love is a grounding force, a place of solace for them both - it's the eye of their storm. While danger ever encircles them, and their enemies continue to haunt their steps, while the fear of failure and their own uncertainties plague them, they find strength, assurance and safety in one another. And that is what I love about them together. They are truly in love. They're honest with each other, kind to each other, willing to sacrifice every for the other. There's no artifice, no political agenda, no games, no power struggle between these two. When they're together they're just Gareth and Adele, two people who've built their relationship on mutual respect and friendship. Two people love each other unconditionally, and who are unafraid to be themselves with each other. They are both somewhat dryly humorous and their witty back-and-forth, as well as their intuitive understanding of each other, constitutes some of my favorite moments of the book. All in all, their love story is really quite beautiful, and it really is the driving force of this book. Even as the odds are stacked against them, they refuse to give up what they share.

Secondary characters. All of my favorite - and not so favorite - characters are back in this nail-biting conclusion. From Simon's unflagging lust for adventure, to Anhalt's steady loyalty, to Mamoru's questionable zeal, to Senator Clark's unfailing arrogance, to Flay's unpredictable aggression, to Cesare's limitless ambition - the characters the Griffiths populate their well-conceived, steampunk world with are three-dimensional and thoroughly developed. Loyalties are revealed, courage is tested and lines are drawn. It's the final act, and everyone has a part to play in this grand drama.

Story & Plot. This book starts off with a literal "bang," and barely pauses long enough for the reader to catch a breath. There are a few quiet moments between Adele and her Greyfriar, but then we're once more plunging headlong into the fray - up to our necks in intrigue, battles of both politics and sword, and always in danger. I confess, I had a few loose predictions going into The Kingmakers about where this book might go, and I have to say the Griffiths surprised me... in a good way. Things didn't play out quite how I expected (and in some cases, that is a very good thing). The only real issue I have with this book is the pacing of the ending. It felt a tad rushed. That's not to say it didn't conclude in some kind of satisfying way. It did. It just felt like it got there a little too... fast? There were also just a few other small things about it, that I can't mention here, that kept my rating just slightly under five stars. However, despite my minor issues, as the rating shows, altogether, I do love every other thing about this novel.

Overall. With a sweeping romance, an epic battle between two rival species, a captivating world of gears and steam, action sequences that are almost cinematic, a cast of fully realized characters, creatures that'll haunt your nightmares, and a plot full of twists, turns and intrigue, The Kingmakers is a thrilling and fitting conclusion to the Vampire Empire Trilogy.

Where is the rest of the story?!
By Shari
SPOILER WARNING: Not for what happens in the book, but for what DOESN'T happen!

I LOVE this series of books. Adele and Gareth will be with me forever on my list of favorite book characters. This is another exciting, well written installment of the Vampire Empire series. But as a last book?! I mean, yes things are settled for the time being, but there are no answers for how Gareth and Adele can stay together with no one but a few people knowing he's a vampire or what happens if the people do figure it out somehow, we don't know who wins the war, if all the vampires get killed or if they manage to coexist with humans...

There are answers enough for a whole fourth book so I'm holding out false hope that this is not a trilogy... The authors just left it all so open and in such a way that, while it doesn't leave me devastated, it leaves me unsatisfied. It would not keep me from recommending this book to anyone though, I truly enjoyed the journey and hope this couple writes many more stories.

Sister Bear is over at Lizzy Bruin's house watching "Trouble at Big Bear High--a big-cubs' video that they probably shouldn't even be looking at--in which two teen bears are having an argument. When one of them gets really really angry, he says a certain word. It's a word Sister has never heard before. At dinner that night Sister tries out this brand-new, stronger-sounding word. Berenstains tackle an all too common problem
By B.C.M.
Some people say that Stan and Jan Berenstain -- after writing nearly 300 books over the past 30 years -- are out of ideas. But "The Berenstain Bears and the Big Blooper" show us that there are still plenty of stories to be told by the lovable family that lives in a treehouse deep in Bear Country. It seems that strong language has crept into every aspect of life, and has become very prevalent in television and movies, many now viewed by young children. The story helps families to talk about the use of "bad" words, and adds an important message that parents (and all adults for that matter) should take to heart: adults shouldn't be using these words either (especially around kids). Stan and Jan hit home with this book, and I look forward to more titles, especially in their series of First Time Books, which continue to help families to deal with the first time experiences and important lessons of childhood.

This is good book about swearing or cuss words. Also important to never make a big fuss when a kid swears, then he or she will just keep doing it to get a reaction.
