The real story of CSI

Very interesting analysis of the background processes in a few noteworthy cases. Gives insight into the problems and concerns in winning a case by either the prosecution of the defense. Certainly brings clarity to the faliacy of the "30 minute CSI" crime solving. Well worth the read

Although I was reluctant to read the first chapter details about the Casey Anthony trial because the information about the disappearance and murder of the child was so horrendous, nonetheless, I was pulled in by the clarity of writing and non-judgmental presentation of facts. Consequently, I read the book cover to cover and believe I am now more understanding of the justice system and its flaws. I believe this book is a MUST READ for anyone who wants a well-balanced understanding of what goes on behind the headlines related to sensational murder cases.

He has an amazing amount of experience with the legal aspects of his cases in addition to the medical. He is upfront in the beginning to tell his audience the difference between real forensics and the television CSI version it takes longer then 60 minutes excellent read

"The orginization." Were in danger Amy, all of us clones who got off the island. Said Andy to Amy who is a clone like Andy. Do you like books where an orginization is after someone who was not supposed to be exposed to the world? If so than this is the book for you. it's filled action and mind boggiling things that you would never believe. the book's called Replica.
This is what the books about, Amy, a clone, created by an orginization, is warned by one of her friends who is also a clone that the orginization is tracking the clones that escaped from their remote island. The orginization is tracking them by a chip in the clones head. They need the clones to build a super clone army. Nowhere is safe from the orginization except, Amy thinks for a video game that her other best friend play s all the time. So Andy and Amy sepperate themselves from their bodies and go in the game. Chris, Amys best friend who is supposed to be controlling her, stps and thats when things get dangerous. Every door they open, every ladder the climb, every step they take could be a trap and an end to their life. But could the organization really be trying to hurt her, even kill her?
This is the great writing of Marilyn Kaye. She keeps you guessing until the end about who did it and how. This is not like other books; in this book, the characters have unusual powers and unusual people who chase them. I'd recommend this book to people who like action, conspiracies, and unusual powers.

Amy enters a virtual world of fantasy and danger.

Amy has found out the truth about her friend Chris. She's given up Eric and is beginning to move on with her life. But she knows that the organization is after her and the clones more than ever because of the failed tropical island project to recruit all the clones in unleashing the organization's plan. After Andy warns her that they've been implanted with a chip and must be more careful than ever, Amy knows that there's only one place to hide - a game called Darklands. Downloaded into the virtual reality where nothing and no one is safe from the Intruders, Amy and Andy have to get herself out fast before it's too late. With Andy's help, she just may be able to escape. But escaping the game will mean winning Darklands, and Amy isn't so sure if that will be easy at all. And is this virtual world only a game - or does it hide a deeper motive? Replica #21: Virtual Amy is a very good and intriguing addition to Marilyn Kaye's unique Replica series. It is a more mature and important book, and I can't wait to read the upcoming Plague Trilogy. Readers who though the series has grown 'babyish' may find that this book deals with more mature matters and deepens the mystery of the entire series.

Nothing Is What It Seems!

In this intriguing book, Amy is left home with her mom's friend Monica and Monica's friend Sunshine, while Amy's mom goes on a trip. Amy's best friend Tasha goes on a skiing trip with her family, but they need to leave Eric, Tasha's older brother and Amy's ex-boyfriend, home because he has a broken arm.
One night, Amy hears something being thrown at her window. She gets up, looks out, and sees that Andy has been throwing rocks at her window. She invites him inside and he tells her that he ran away from his "dad", who really turned out to be an evil person from the organization. He also tells her that all of the Amys and Andys who were on the island in book #18, Return Of The Perfect Girls, were implanted with a chip that helps the organization know where they are and what they're thinking. They have nowhere to run or hide except for a computer game called Darklands. In order to win the game, they have to go through many dangerous challenges. I gave this book 5 stars because it's one of my favorites in the series. I hated the ending, though. I almost cried when I read it. Don't worry, no one dies. But I won't give away anything else...

A Pretty Sight by David O’Meara

I really liked A Pretty Sight. I love poetry, I know it’s not the genre I usually review, but it is my guilty pleasure that I usually don’t share with many people. David O’ Meara’s collection stands out from the rest.

My favorites being So Far, So Stupid, Talk and Impagliato. Each poem possessed a bit of grittiness that focused on war, art, culture and rebellion. Talk really stood out to me. Maybe it is because of where I am in my life right now, but I honestly don’t know why it stood out so much. Raw emotion always appeals to me.

“Rooms where our unsuspecting ghosts still drink and smoke, contra Yeats, imperfect on every count.”

I am going to be on a mission to find the other collections published by David O’Meara. I can only hope that each other one will be as unique as A Pretty sight.

Must Read for Training Professionals

I have added this book to my list of suggested references whenever I speak on social learning or just-in-time training design. In this guide to mobile learning, Enders not only talks about how to design better mobile learning, she also writes on how to manage the overall mobile project to reduce risks and costs. Standard training development is discussed and then compared to how shorter segments of mobile learning can be just as effective as instructor-led or modern e-learning if done properly as a topic intros, pre-training events, JIT videos or audios, as well as training refreshers. Having come from a background that includes both training delivery and information systems design, I find many of Enders ideas to make great sense for project managers and instructional designers.
However, you do not have to have Enders or my background to understand this book. It is very well written. I especially like how this book works as a great reference guide that includes a usable index, chapter checklists/summaries, explanation of key ISD and IT terms, plus many valuable questions to ask during each stage of the mobile learning project from idea - thru design - and into implementation. After reading the book through, use it over and over by going to the table of contents to find the chapter you need to re-read and be sure to manage your time by reading the checklist at end of chapter first to verify you found the right one to review.

This is the best primer on how white european cultural norms have used Christianity as a cudgel throughout history. As a basic primer it is an amazing text and, unlike others on the subject, the author is not angry or antagonistic to Christianity as a whole but seeking to make us recognize all the ways where Christianity and secular culture have become intertwined to a point where most of us cannot recognize the difference.

A requisite need for any Christian, and especially clergy like myself, who wish to be truly aware of the place of our faith in the world.

Kivel has provided us with a great guide for understanding the way Christianity has shaped our thinking, actions and culture. He has pointed us in the direction of dealing with this in a positive way; but nobody said it is going to be easy.

A practical text on an often-ignored topic

Some types of power and privilege are discussed more than others, and one of the lesser-acknowledged types of oppression is Christian Hegemony. The author of this book, Paul Kivel, defines Christian Hegemony as “the everyday, systematic set of Christian values, individuals, and institutions that dominate all aspects of U.S. society.” This is an important text for those who want to understand the ways in which privileges and benefits exist for those who are raised as or pass as Christians in the U.S. For readers open-minded enough to consider this possibility, the book is very interesting and quite enlightening.

Kivel’s book breaks down the ways in which Christian Hegemony work in the U.S. – through the power of individual clergy, parachurch organizations, Christian elites who control important institutions, as well as “the subtle internalization of Christian beliefs” and “the deep legacy of ideas, values, and practices produced within dominant Western Christianity over the centuries that continues to frame our culture and frame our public policies.” Chapter two includes a very useful checklist called “Living in a Christian-Dominant Culture” which checklist can help you to see the ways in which we are influenced and impacted by living in a Christian-dominant society.

Chapters three and four are fascinating looks at the ways in which key Christian concepts and ways of thinking influence individuals, societies, and histories. Kivel discusses and gives concrete examples of the impact of concepts like dualism, good vs. evil, sinners in need of salvation, one truth, a linear and finite temporal focus, dominion over nature, etc., as well as dominant Christian narratives like conversion, captivity and the need for a Savior, charity and benevolent intervention, science and technology, etc. There is another great checklist in chapter four to help you think about how we internalize these ideas. Kivel also does a chapter on the origins and history of Christianity and its influence, which is extremely helpful in understanding important Christian-influenced historical events like the Crusades, witch hunts, the Protestant Reformation, colonization, missionaries, Manifest Destiny, slavery, and even the Jewish Holocaust.

One of the most important chapters of the book is chapter six, which helps the reader see the direct links between Christianity and public policy, both domestic and foreign. This is especially critical post 9/11 as Islamophobia has become public policy in many ways. What I most appreciate about this book is that it ends on a hopeful and needed note – the last chapter is titled “Resistance” and discusses how both Christians and those of other faiths can work for change and greater inclusion and pluralism. This chapter also has two great resources: a section on common denials and possible responses and a section on guidelines for Christian allies. These two sections are practical and helped me to think about how I would actually apply what I read about in the text.

I can understand why some readers might be put off by the topic of this book or feel defensive. I applaud Paul Kivel for having the courage to write an entire text on a topic that can cause fear and conflict – he is challenging us to think about something that surrounds us everyday in the U.S. but is rarely ever acknowledged. He makes clear that the book is not about Christianity per se, but about dominance. I am a Christian, and while I was familiar with some of the ideas in the book prior to reading, it really opened my eyes to the direct and more subtle ways in which Christian Hegemony functions on a societal level as well as in the way that I view events and my perspective on the world. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to understand and learn more about this topic, and I think it would be particularly useful for educators and activists working on issues of religious intolerance.

A refreshing look at human nature and marketing

I found Second that Emotion to be a wonderful compliment to the existing array of books about branding and consumer behavior. Jeremy Holden has broken new ground in illuminating how people develop beliefs and make decisions about brands as well as other topics in their lives. It's refreshing to see a framework about decisions, trends and movements that applies to marketing but is rooted in history and popular culture. I found his well-researched discussion of social contracts and illogical leaps to be of particular interest and directly applicable to branding strategy.

There is a growing trend in marketing to think of the people who buy products & services as humans first and consumers second, where shared values between brands and people lead to loyal customers and profitable brands. It is timely that this book is focused on insights about humans yet set in a marketing context. And it's thrilling to read a book about branding that is not filled with the usual buzz words!

Utilizing an evidence-building writing technique similar to that of Malcolm Gladwell in "Blink," "Outliers," and "The Tipping Point," Holden builds the case in "Second That Emotion" that every day we as humans collectively build beliefs, make brand choices, and even select lifestyles that are based on emotional and illogical bits of information or misinformation. From early history to current events, Holden takes us through example after example of the phenomenon that leads to these firmly held belief systems he calls "social contracts." This is a must read for anyone interested in the irrationality of human decision making.

Author Jeremy Holden, an-award winning advertising executive, shows that many of our likes and dislikes are determined by emotions and selective believing, along with other non-logical factors.

In his book, Holden classifies three basic types of people who create and then perpetuate commercial, political, and populist movements, and shows how each uses the others to form opinions. Icons and symbols are also discussed along with historic examples of successful and unsuccessful movements.

"Pure Poultry": An instructional storybook on raising heritage birds

Cruelty-free, organic eggs and poultry are easier than ever to find in your local market, but for those who desire to be a part of the farm-to-table experience, finding a guide to raising one's own poultry can be daunting. Fortunately, Victoria Redhed Miller's book, "Pure Poultry: Living Well with Heritage Chickens, Turkeys and Ducks," offers a glimpse into what to expect as a newbie poultry farmer.

Pure Poultry is not the traditional-type livestock manual that reads like stereo instructions; it's written from Miller's direct experience of raising turkeys, chickens, and ducks on her Washington state homestead. She documents her years of experimentation, trial and error, and anecdotal evidence with a down-to-earth writing style that is not intimidating, breezy, and makes for an easy read. Although the knowledge she shares with the reader is real and proven, her delivery comes across as if you were sitting on the front porch of her farmstead, enjoying an iced tea, and listening to her spin stories like an old friend.

It should be noted that this book is more of an experiential overview on poultry, predators, and the dilemmas involved with raising poultry, as opposed to a primer on the subject; however, she often cites other texts the reader can reference for more in-depth knowledge on the topic she is touching upon. Miller follows her words of wit and wisdom with thorough resource list, appendix, and a planning worksheet for those who are just venturing into the world of raising poultry.

Miller's anecdotes and musings are plenty entertaining, though, and contain hidden gems of advice (such as clearing away the understory brush and greenery that made it possible for bobcats to hide and pillage her flocks) around each page you turn. She also includes recipes, and sound suggestions for processing poultry and food preservation that rounds out the storytime aspects of the book. For those interested in the commercial possibilities of raising heritage poultry, Miller details her own experience with local supply, demand, and how one can balance the two.

All in all, Miller's Pure Poultry provides entertainment, education, and a hearty laugh for the reader who wants to peek inside the world of the feathered farmer. Even if you prefer your eggs pre-packaged in the cartons, you won't regret giving this book a read.

Supremely-readable and balanced biography of Scotland's Reformer

While visiting John Knox's museum/home in Edinburgh, I selected this book from a collection of biographies. The description of the book as an even-handed account of his life was the main reason for selecting this text. I chose well, I believe.

Dr. Rosalind Marshall, the author of John Knox, is a prolific writer and historian who serves as a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. She writes primarily on women's studies, but if that is not your cup of tea (as it is not mine) - do not fear, as this book steps out of her normal sphere of focus. She does speak about Knox's views on women, which she postulates are misunderstood. The first purpose of the book is to set out an unbiased history of John Knox, but an underlying theme works to correct poorly made assumptions of John Knox in recent scholarship.

The author works hard to remain unbiased and references her work prodigiously. Due to a lack of sources, she does have to fill in the gaps, especially with Knox's early life, but Dr. Marshall makes it clear in the text when she is doing that (filling in the gaps with reason/logic/suppositions).

Theologically speaking, Dr. Marshall appears to be sympathetic of the Reformers. The Catholic excesses of the time are an understood conclusion without much detailed discussion. The author, though, never steps out and denigrates the Catholic church on her own. In other words, this book is not a theological history that has a bone to pick with any other church. Dr. Marshall simply reports on the Reformers' beliefs and their work in Geneva, England and (primarily) Scotland.

The book proceeds chronologically from his early days and priesthood to his conversion to Reformed theology. As mentioned, there is little extant record of Knox's life during this time, but the author makes it clear what is sourced and what is assumed/reasoned. After a discussion of Knox's time as a French galley slave and his release in England, she covers Knox's relationship with Elizabeth Bowes. This relationship has spawned many writings (both contemporary and current) that make the relationship to be more than a pastor-congregant friendship, and using the extant writings of both, Dr. Marshall dispels the myths. This is the first of three detailed excerpts Dr. Marshall focuses upon. The next focal point arises after her discussion of Knox's time in Geneva and Frankfurt and deals with his controversial "The First Blast of the Trumpet" pamphlet.

The "First Blast" she contends was not a treatise against women, but against Mary I (Bloody Mary) of England. While many say this writing also applied to Mary of Guise and Mary Queen of Scots, Marshall makes a strong case that neither is in view when Knox writes this text. Instead, Knox is unleashing his pen to strike out at the persecution in England by the Catholics. While Dr. Marshall promotes a history that corrects current (and contemporary) theories of his misogyny, she does not sugar-coat Knox's tongue in the process. Dr. Marshall shows a vengeful and grudge-holding Knox letting loose "regrettable" words frequently.

While the text covers Knox's sermon at Perth and details of the Reformation back in Scotland, she next provides a detailed account of Knox's five encounters with Mary Queen of Scots. Unfortunately, only Knox's records of these events exist, and Marshall makes it clear that her writing only has those accounts to rely upon for her history. Again, Dr. Marshall does a good job of remaining unbiased. Neither Mary nor Knox is painted in an unbalanced light.

The book continues to discuss the rest of Knox's life including the civil war and his involvement in aspects of it. Dr. Marshall quite aptly suggests early on in her book that Knox must have enjoyed Zwingli's writings, which seems to fit with his involvement here.

Her last discussion deals quickly with criticism of Knox's late marriage to a young Stuart. Here, Dr. MArshall points to the ways of the time and the fact that nothing denotes that Knox had a penchant for young girls for the sake of young girls as some scholars have poorly suggested.

Due to Dr. Marshall's unbiased nature, reliance on contemporary sources, and easy readability, this biography of John Knox serves well as an introduction to the Reformer's life.

Artistic storytelling!

This is by far the best biography about Knox I've read so far. Marshall writes with the skill of an imaginative storyteller, drawing the reader's attention to the interesting and personal details of Knox's life. At the same time, Marshall leaves speculation on Knox's personality and beliefs to the reader, presenting the facts and accounts of his life that have been left to us. I will be reading this one to my children as they grow up!

Enjoyable read with balanced perspective

Excellent book that provides a balanced perspective on John Knox. I read this book for a seminary class on Church History. It was easy reading, informative, detailed and gave insight to why Knox had such a reputation as a "woman hater" (which is patently false). I wish it had a summary of key players, because the author would switch names around (e.g. James Hamilton aka 2nd Earl of Arran aka Queen Regent). But overall, very good book that is both interesting and enjoyable as well as educational.
