Not organized well

I assumed this book would be a collection of all the Practice Makes Perfect workbooks, which have all gotten good reviews. Unfortunately, the preface states they only used certain elements from six of the other books, and in doing so, the organization and intuitiveness of the book has suffered.

This book begins by assuming you already know the vocabulary and grammar to create complex sentences. It starts by explaining spelling and punctuation, but one of the exercises instructs you to translate sentences from English to Spanish while adding proper punctuation.

For example, problem number 5 on page 7 says, 'They will give a lecture in the EU,' and the reader must translate to 'Daran una conferencia en la UE.' To create that sentence in Spanish, you must know how to conjugate 'to give' and the word for lecture, along with sentence structures that the book hasn't yet taught.

Language exercises are helpful in reinforcing the knowledge you just learned, but only if you have the basic skills needed to do them, which the writer of this book didn't seem to take into account.

Here are a few more examples from the first chapter on spelling and punctuation.

Problem 2 on page 8 asks that you insert commas into their proper place in this sentence:

'Hacen ejercicios montan en bicicleta levanter pesas y corren siete o ocho millas.'

This is the sentence we're supposed to correct, but I have no idea what the vocabulary means, so I can't effectively practice what I just learned about comma placement following certain types of words. The answer key in the back states the sentence should look like this:

'Hacen ejercicios, montan en bicecleta, levanter pesas y corren siete u ocho millas.'

Then, the book asks that you unscramble words to make a sentence:

de hecho/paciencia/mucho/no tienes/enojas/porque/mucho/te

Maybe someone smarter than me could've figured this out with no background in Spanish, but I was completely lost. For those who are curious, the answer is: 'De hecho, no tienes paciencia porque te enojas mucho,' which doesn't
utilize the second 'mucho' from the initial question, causing even more confusion.

On the last page of the first chapter, an exercise asks that you answer the questions in complete sentences in Spanish. Assuming the reader can even understand the questions, which are written in Spanish, it would be difficult for them to answer when the only thing that's been taught so far is general rules for punctuation and spelling.

One question asks: 'What day of the week do you prefer?' I couldn't answer that question without knowing the Spanish verb for 'to prefer' and how to conjugate it, not to mention the days of the week, only four of which were mentioned in passing earlier in the chapter.

Observant readers may notice that one of the sentence models shown previously says, 'El viernes es mi dia favorito,' or 'Friday is my favorite day,' and copy their answer directly, but it's easier to learn from the exercises when you do them yourself, so I wish the book had exercises that built only on the lessons already taught.

I will continue to read the book and try to learn from it, but it will be difficult if the other chapters are as unintuitive as the first, which seems to be the case from what I've seen after skimming through the book.

The preface says the book is mainly targeted toward self-taught learners, but I would recommend this book more to intermediate or advanced Spanish speakers who need a refresher or to students with a teacher to guide them through the book and provide supplemental exercises.

Update:

I am now finishing the second chapter on subject pronouns and the present tense, and all of the problems listed above exist in this chapter as well. Also, on page 31, the author indicates that she had previously presented material on the irregular verb 'haber,' though it hadn't been mentioned at all.

Maybe I am being too cynical, but I suspect the creators of the book may have copied and pasted from the other Practice Makes Perfect books without thinking of organization, or possibly the book editors just didn't pay close enough attention as they checked for mistakes. I'm hoping the errors don't extend to the Spanish lessons themselves, but I don't know enough about the language to say one way or the other.

This is not exactly a beginner Spanish lessons book but has lots of worksheets that are very good. I was bilingual as a child but have not used my speaking or writing skills in over 35 years. My husband is latino he speaks frequently to me in Spanish. I can read and understand when someone is speaking to me but have a hard time writing or speaking back. This book is very helpful for that.

Wonderful picture book for Halloween

This is a delightful rhyming funny story that many kids will relate to as they think about choosing a costume for Halloween. The illustrations are fabulous and add much to the story. Czajak and Grieb making a winning team in a book that kids will want to read and reread. Fantastic!

Monster & Me Forever!

My children and I absolutely LOVE the Monster & Me series. The author does such a great job telling a great story in an enjoyable way that my kids love to read it again and again (so do I). The monster theme is so well done as he's a monster but yet adorable and lovable. It's something that boys and girls can really relate to as it touches their imaginations while telling real world stories.

Children of all ages appreciated this book. It was rhymy but in a good way. It even had a storyline that didn't disappoint. The illustrations were fun filled with lots of detail. It's a must have Halloween story for young children.

Delightful story

In this delightful story Ava sends Santa Claus a letter, thanking him for her gifts and inquiring after his New Year plans. Surprised that someone is thinking of him after Christmas, Santa writes back, beginning a year long correspondence with Ava that leads right up until following holiday season. Ava, full of curiosity and questions, asks many of the things children will often ask of their parents, but receives answers directly from Santa himself! I loved that this story addresses the tough questions - How does Santa get into houses without chimneys? How does he even fit down those chimneys? And does Santa know the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny? - while encouraging kids who still believe in Santa to hold on to the magic and keep believing, nevermind the older siblings and peers who might say otherwise!

Heartwarming Story

I bought this book for my friend's 4 year old daughter and loved it so much I'm going to buy a copy for myself (and keep it for when I have grandchildren). As a parent, it reminds me of the joy and wonder my children experinced at Christmas,and young children will surely enjoy identifying with Ava's pen pal journey with Santa.

Great New Christmas book!

This is a fantastic book! Great for the age range of 4 to 7 or so. It is a really good book for families that have some younger children that believe in Santa, and older children that don't. I love the story, and the illustrations are great! Wonderful addition to the Christmas book collection.

Read this book - for your sake and others

Let me preface this review by saying I'm not the guy who usually writes reviews. I'm also not the guy that says he doesn't write reviews but does write them, check my record. I'll make this short and sweet. Buy this book and read it. I'm in my mid-30's and my father is suffering from mid-to-late stage Alzheimer's and I only wish I could have learned intel from Chris Johnson earlier. I'm in no way implying it would have prevented his, but I can tell you that small incremental lifestyle adjustments may have helped. It is with that spirit that I have absorbed anything and everything I can get my hands on from Chris Johnson's camp. You see, I have a 3yr old son and I want to do everything in my power to enable him and educate him on this stuff by learning it myself and helping ward off dis-ease (for both our sakes). The stuff he says simply makes sense and after some time and discipline of his principles, your body will respond differently (in a positive vitality kind of way - at least mine has). In an era where everyone talks Atkins, cleansing, fasting, hydration, South Beach, high cab/low carb, blah blah blah it can get overwhelming and downright confusing. This book is written in a clear and concise manner. It is only one in a handful of books that I have read in one sitting and yet still continually reference back to. Not everything Chris recommends is easy or cheap, but I can assure you that the cost of not at least reading this book, will pale in comparison in the long run. People read self help books all day long while eating potato chips and sitting on their duff at the coffee shop. Doesn't make sense... this does. Buy it, read it, and most importantly, even if in small steps, implement.

Must read book if you want to live a healthier, happier, and longer life!

I just finished reading this book for the 3rd time. Each time I learn something new and it reinforces so many useful and educational advice that Chris Johnson provides. There is so much material that you can not absorb it all, thankfully you can read this book in about 4-5 hours.

The book provides a general overview of how the body maintains itself at cellular and ph level. Then discusses balancing life and stress with rest, rejuvenation. Next he goes into detail about proper nutrition and diet/eating from carbs, fats, proteins he then adds exercise and wraps up with big picture goal planning.

I first met Chris 2yrs ago at a weekend retreat on nutrition/exercise/stress mgmt that my company sponsored. It changed my life for the better by opening my eyes to how poorly I was eating and exercising as I had little knowledge about proper diet and exercise. It is sad that our education system does not teach such an important subject. Went to an amusement park yesterday and was shocked at how overweight the average American is as well as the complete junk that Americans are fed. Everything Chris talks about is true in poor food that Americans are fed and use it. The only thing you could eat at the amusement park was pizza, fries, soda, fried chicken, hamburgers.

This is chris 3rd book I believe and each one gets better and better. This book discusses many of the nutrition topics from his last book On Taget Living Nutrition, which I recommend, but added in more comprehensive depth about healthy living not just nutrition such as focusing on rest and rejuvenation whether it be creating "white space" to mediate or close your eyes and rest to getting a massage and sleeping enough. I feel more energy and less lethargic from exercising and eating healthier.

I have adopted many of Chris teachings in taking all the super foods he recommends, exercising 5x a week, drinking tons of water, and sleeping 7hrs a day. Last winter was the first time I have never been sick in my life so have to give his teachings the credit. Still not there with my food being in his inner target rings but have made significant improvements from 2yrs ago. I highly recommend this book as it will change your life for the better. I regularly preach Chris teachings to clients, friends, family members and give his books as gifts to people that I care about and want to live a healthier life.

He has a great website with free monthly email newsletter as well as a iPhone app with tips and videos of his tips. And I follow him on Facebook where he gives reminders to sat healthy and fit. For $16 this book will educate you, change your life for the better, and allow you to live a longer healthier life.

Buy the book, you won't regret it. Knowledge is power.

This Book Has it All!

What Chris Johnson has done in this book is synthesize everything you need to do to live my favorite phrase, "Quality Of Life".

From his humble beginnings as a poison pushing snack distributor to 17,000 personal training sessions, to becoming a global phenomenon in his speaking gigs, I personally can express that Chris Johnson and his book will change your life, it worked for me and it will for you. His knowledge is second to none, he is now leading teaching seminars to physicians who are trying to figure out the routine, if he is teaching doctors I think he can teach us as well, don't you?

Simple to read, not overly science heavy, straightforward and logical, this book is worth its weight in whatever precious substance you want to use, I like to think life is the most precious thing we all have, and maximizing our potential and performance in our daily lives is key.

Chris lays out the plan.

I read a lot of books, and I talk to a lot of experts, being a talk show host that's my job, if I don't like a book you won't see me waste my time writing a bad review, because I won't write anything. So take it from me, this one gets it done!

About the Author
Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

If you have a spunky toddler you can relate to Curious George. His books are funny, whimscial, easy to read and keeps the attention of a 2 year old (probably taking tips from the monkey on their next "curoius adventure"

Although this is, like virtually all of the Curious George board books released in the last dozen years, essentially a cut and paste job from the earlier full-length books, it is my favorite of the bunch.

Opposites are a great concept for young ones to learn, and while there are surely other books that will offer similar information, nor will this one irreparably harm your child (like The Original Curious George)!

Dr. Seuss' The Foot Book is a fine choice, but it is more for early readers, at least the version I have in its original non-board book form (The Foot Book).

Since there is no danger in spoiling the plot(!), these are the couplets in Curious George's Opposites:

That The Illustrated Man has remained in print since being published in 1951 is fair testimony to the universal appeal of Ray Bradbury's work. Only his second collection (the first was Dark Carnival, later reworked into The October Country), it is a marvelous, if mostly dark, quilt of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. In an ingenious framework to open and close the book, Bradbury presents himself as a nameless narrator who meets the Illustrated Man--a wanderer whose entire body is a living canvas of exotic tattoos. What's even more remarkable, and increasingly disturbing, is that the illustrations are themselves magically alive, and each proceeds to unfold its own story, such as "The Veldt," wherein rowdy children take a game of virtual reality way over the edge. Or "Kaleidoscope," a heartbreaking portrait of stranded astronauts about to reenter our atmosphere--without the benefit of a spaceship. Or "Zero Hour," in which invading aliens have discovered a most logical ally--our own children. Grade 7 Up-Paul Hecht's calm, assured voice narrates this classic science fiction anthology by Ray Bradbury that brings to life the social and political fears prevalent in post World War II America, when they were first published. The unnamed narrator in the introduction watches the Illustrated Man's tattoos come to life presenting the 19 short stories. Resonant with authority, Hecht's voice presents rocket men in difficult circumstances, and yet he is able to be detached from their impending deaths. This is contrasted with the gentle tones of devotion of religious clerics. His speech presents a full variety of techniques. He changes pitch for the women characters, and modulates volume and speed to depict the full spectrum of emotions. Efficient production so that most stories are completed on a single side of a tape will enable teachers to locate easily a desired story for class presentation. Only a few of the shortest stories are two on a side. The wicked, colorful tattoos make a very eye-catching cover. A must for sci-fi fans!-Claudia Moore, W.T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA

Haunting Stories of Depressing Beauty

Conceptually, The Illustrated Man is brilliant from the get-go, including its novel premise of 18 stories as told through the moving tattoos on a man's body; in addition to weaving intricate webs, the Illustrated Man's body art predicts the future.
And, oh, what stories are told. As a science fiction writer, it is no surprise that the majority of Bradbury's stories have to do with space and the future (heck, all of space was in the future when these stories were written in the early 50s). Additionally, the majority of the tales are pretty bleak, dealing with dark themes of revenge, futile searches for paradise, and Armageddon. However, save for their near-universal excellence, thought-provocation, and prescience, the similarities end there.
Among them: Mars is colonized by black people who have left Earth's prejudices, and await with apprehension the arrival of a white-piloted rocket ship from their former homeland; another planet's soldiers attack Earth and are surprised at the warm welcome they receive, only to learn that they can be conquered by Earth's lousy diet, sedentary ways, and shallow culture as easily as by the planet's military; an assembly of priests travels to Mars to learn about Martian sins, so as to spread God's word and earn converts of the Red plant; an entire city is built with the concept of vengeance in mind, by its citizens who were to perish before being able to exact that revenge themselves; the authors of classic tales of horror, whose works are banned on Earth, are themselves exiled to Mars and only kept alive by the few remaining copies not burned for censorship.
There are a couple of lame ducks herein, but even those are salvaged by the beauty of Bradbury's writing. His metaphors and descriptive devices flow from the pages and grant a macabre beauty to even the most desolate of landscapes.

Illustrating Human Nature

Sometimes it's hard to remember that Ray Bradbury approaches the art of the short story in a very unconventional way. His collections of short stories are often tied together by common sub-themes or settings, although each story could also stand on its own. Such is the case here, though the running theme to the Illustrated Man collection is mostly an abstraction. Apparently the stories here are told by a man's haunted tattoos, but don't worry about that too much. The true theme holding this group of stories together is examinations of human nature and mankind's place in the universe. Bradbury's frequent use of Mars (and occasionally other planets) as a setting, with the obligatory spaceships and technology, is merely his method of creating alternate realities to bring human nature into bold relief.
Bradbury's classic examinations of the dark and melancholy side of humanity are well represented here as always, with his trademark poetic writing style and underlying sense of creeping dread. The classic virtual reality tale "The Veldt" is found here, with the typical misuse-of-technology theme presented in an unexpectedly haunting fashion. More evidence that the stock sci-fi themes are merely a thin backdrop can be seen in "The Other Foot," a chilling examination of race relations; or "The Rocket," which deals with the yearning of regular people to reach beyond the confines of Earth. Other winning stories include "Kaleidoscope" and "The Long Rain" which are haunting tales of how human nature can still undermine the greatest achievements of cold technology. So don't concern yourself with the typical sci-fi backdrop, and get in tune with what Ray Bradbury is really talking about.

After Katie Lynn Cooke's father informs her they can't afford a trip to Florida to visit Grandma, Katie Lynn and her best friend, Tina, bake a batch of cookies using Grandma's recipe, plus her "secret ingredient"Amayonnaise. Tina gives samples to a local restaurant owner who hires the girls to supply the dessert. After baking incessantly all summer, the two pals raise enough money to visit Katie Lynn's grandmother together. Yet when Katie Lynn and her friend tell Mrs. Cooke that they have earned enough for "us" to make the trip, the clueless woman assumes that "us" means Katie Lynn and her rather than Tina. With another leap of credibility, the young heroine solves the problem in a snap: "I used the money to fly Grandma here to see us!" Grandma suddenly appears on the doorstep and announces she's staying on permanently to help the girls bake and sell cookies. Katie Lynn gushes, "Oh, Grandma! That would be so incredible!" Grade 2-4-Katie Lynn is devastated when her parents can't afford the annual vacation to visit her grandmother in Florida. She really misses the delicious cookies she has whenever she is there and decides to use her grandmother's recipe to bake her own. When a local restaurant owner decides to feature the cookies on his menu, the child and her best friend form a baking company to earn money for a trip to Florida, but business turns out to be lots more complicated than they had expected. The adult characters do not fare well in this book. Mom, in particular, is a cheerful incompetent who has to be carefully excluded from the real work of the cookie company. Katie Lynn seems to be the only practical one in her family. She even arranges for her grandmother to fly up for a visit without consulting her parents. When Grandma proposes to move in and help with the business, it is actually Katie Lynn who agrees to the arrangement. Not an essential purchase by any means, but a pleasant enough choice where there is high demand for easy chapter books.

I think this book is so fun for little girls. I have to disagree that it's too tame. What in the world should a 7 or 8 year old read? Tame books for heaven's sake. This is cute and a quick, fun read. My little girls loved this series, I'm just sorry there aren't more and that it's out of print! We like them so much that I'm trying to hunt them down, even though we've already read them. Thank goodness we are lucky enough to have the whole series at our local library.

Good Story for Seven to Eight Year Old Girls

"Katie Lynn's Cookie Company: The Secret Ingredient" is a cute story for young girls. Katie Lynn's mother is completely helpless in the kitchen. She burns food so often, members of the fire department have the layout of the house memorized. Katie Lynn misses her grandmother, and her grandmother's wonderful cooking, but the family can't afford a trip to visit her this year. Following her grandmother's advice, Katie Lynn and her friend Tina decide to use her special recipe to back up a batch of her fabulous cookies. After Tina takes cookie samples to a local restaurant, the girls find themselves thrust into the role of professional bakers. Katie Lynn seizes on the opportunity to earn money for a trip to Florida, and she and Tina are in business.

I agree with other reviews that this book is a little bland, but it will strike a cord with some young girls. Kids are generally interested in stories about children who master skills like cooking or running a business. Most kids who don't have a close grandmother want the special kind of relationship that Katie Lynn has with hers. The silly, impractical mother provides a bit of comic relief and a foil for Katie Lynn and her grandmother. The story is a little too tame, but many girls in the seven - eight year old age range will still enjoy this book.
