Biographers have the unique responsibility—and privilege—of living with their subjects for the years they’re doing their research and writing. Frankly, I couldn’t have asked for better company over the last five years. Jim Henson has been part of my life—and probably part of yours—for nearly as long as I can remember. I was two when Sesame Street premiered in 1969, and nine when The Muppet Show debuted in 1976. That practically makes me Muppets Generation 1.0. Why would I choose to write about Jim Henson, then? Heck, why wouldn’t I?

For the most part, the bulk of the research for this biography was conducted the old-fashioned way: sitting in an archive—in this case, The Jim Henson Company archives in Long Island City, New York—and turning over documents one at a time. I read through Jim’s private diaries, examined handwritten notes—sometimes just scraps of paper with ideas for a character name or a slapdash drawing of a new Muppet—pored through business papers and receipts, and poked through innumerable TV scripts and film proposals, many of which never made it any further than Jim’s carefully typed notes. For the first time, you’ll read about many of these projects, and learn how hard Jim worked to bring programs like The Muppet Show to television.

I also had the pleasure of interviewing all five Henson children and his widow, Jane—who passed away earlier this year—as well as countless colleagues, friends, and collaborators. We spoke in living rooms in London, workshops in New York, and film studios in Burbank. We talked over breakfast in hotels and brunches in diners. And when we couldn’t meet in person, we talked on telephones and Skype, or wrote each other e-mails. Almost to a person, everyone was open, honest, and thoughtful about Jim and his work—and, as you can probably imagine, many were also very, very funny.

Finally, of course, there was the pure enjoyment of going back through Jim’s work, watching Muppets and Fraggles and Skeksis and Storytellers with a keener appreciation of how Jim wove his life into his art, and his art through his life. Any time you can watch episodes of The Muppet Show, or old footage of Jim blowing up his Muppets on The Ed Sullivan Show and call it work, you know you’ve officially got one of the best jobs anywhere.

It took five years to get here—and now, at last, it’s your turn to live with Jim Henson. I think you’ll find he’s pretty much exactly as you want him to be: genuinely kind, dazzlingly inspirational, immensely talented and—as Frank Oz said—“delightfully imperfect.” Not bad for a kid from the swamps of Mississippi.

Just a most fascinating book about a most fascinating person! I thoroughly enjoyed it and am now searching for Muppets shows to watch for so many
of the things I learned. I am sorry I did not fully appreciate this fellow until after he passed away. This is a wonderful biography.

Tetlock shows conclusively two key points: First, the best experts in making political estimates and forecasts are no more accurate than fairly simple mathematical models of their estimative processes. This is yet another confirmation of what Robyn Dawes termed "the robust beauty of simple linear models." The inability of human experts to out-perform models based on their expertise has been demonstrated in over one hundred fields of expertise over fifty years of research; one of the most robust findings in social science. Political experts are no exception.

Secondly, Tetlock demonstrates that experts who know something about a number of related topics (foxes) predict better than experts who know a great deal about one thing (hedgehogs). Generalist knowledge adds to accuracy.

Tetlock's survey of this research is clear, crisp, and compelling. His work has direct application to world affairs. For example he is presenting his findings to a conference of Intelligence Community leaders next week (Jan 2007) at the invitation of the Director of National Intelligence.

"Expert Political Judgment" is recommended to anyone who depends on political experts, which is pretty much all of us. Tetlock helps the non-experts to know more about what the experts know, how they know it, and how much good it does them in making predictions.

Careful, Plodding, Objective

This book is a rather dry description of good research into the forecasting abilities of people who are regarded as political experts. It is unusually fair and unbiased.

His most important finding about what distinguishes the worst from the not-so-bad is that those on the hedgehog end of Isaiah Berlin's spectrum (who derive predictions from a single grand vision) are wrong more often than those near the fox end (who use many different ideas). He convinced me that that finding is approximately right, but leaves me with questions.

Does the correlation persist at the fox end of the spectrum, or do the most fox-like subjects show some diminished accuracy?

How do we reconcile his evidence that humans with more complex thinking do better than simplistic humans, but simple autoregressive models beat all humans? That seems to suggest there's something imperfect in using the hedgehog-fox spectrum. Maybe a better spectrum would use evidence on how much data influences their worldviews?

Another interesting finding is that optimists tend to be more accurate than pessimists. I'd like to know how broad a set of domains this applies to. It certainly doesn't apply to predicting software shipment dates. Does it apply mainly to domains where experts depend on media attention?

To what extent can different ways of selecting experts change the results? Tetlock probably chose subjects that resemble those who most people regard as experts, but there must be ways of selecting experts which produce better forecasts. It seems unlikely they can match prediction markets, but there are situations where we probably can't avoid relying on experts.

He doesn't document his results as thoroughly as I would like (even though he's thorough enough to be tedious in places):

I can't find his definition of extremists. Is it those who predict the most change from the status quo? Or the farthest from the average forecast?

His description of how he measured the hedgehog-fox spectrum has a good deal of quantitative evidence, but not quite enough for me check where I would be on that spectrum.

How does he produce a numerical timeseries for his autoregressive models? It's not hard to guess for inflation, but for the end of apartheid I'm rather uncertain.

Great Decision Making Evidence

As both a consultant and an investment manager I have spent a lot of years studying decision theory. One limitation in a lot of the work I encountered was its heavy reliance on lab studies using students. You were never quite sure if the conclusions applied in the "real world." This outstanding book puts that concern to rest. It is by far the richest body of evidence I have encountered on decision making in real world situations. Anybody interested in decision making and decision theory will profit from reading it.

Fast Paced Swords & Science

Eva Forge is the last Paladin of the God of War Morgan. The problem is he is long dead from his brother's hands Amon. This leaves only the last brother immortal Alexander as the last living god in charge of the city of Ash and its surrounding areas. As Paladin Eva is entrusted with the security and protection of the Cult of Morgan and its followers. Not an easy thing for just one person, but with sword and magicked gun she soldiers on with loose lips and a hothead attitude. While on a mission to take the leader of her order somewhere and back some craziness with zombies of a sort goes down and she must track down one of her own.

The Horns of Ruin is very different tonally from Heart of Veridon so don't expect more of the same. It has an almost animalistic and visceral feel with loads of fights and colorful language that may be more at home in a Fantasy novel. Eva Forge is one tough lady who doesn't have much of a feminine side, but that is what you get when you train a person from childhood how to kill. I was immediately taken in by Eva's brusque disposition, which is best shown in her dialogue where she verbally combats people just as much as physically. Yet outside of Eva most characters aren't given much depth or detail that would connect you better with them.

The system of magic is based off of chanting and belief of past events, which was a nice way of mixing religion and magic given the nature of their gods. There is sometimes an over abundance of the chanting magic as Eva stretches herself to keep going. The Horns of Ruin often blends magic and science that comes off very blurred at times, which made my mind want to rebel not knowing which aspect was intended. Finally I just decided to go with it and not try to read too much into how something in particular was possible. The followers of Amon's abilities are particularly intriguing being that have a mastery over technology, but can also affect power through chanting including an impressive unmaking type spell. There are some Steampunk elements to be sure such as some jet packs and monorails, but this feels like a post Steampunk world with a healthy dash of magic and gods thrown in.

You'd be hard pressed to name a faster paced book. Akers barely gives you time to contemplate all the happenings as Eva bounces from one fight to the next. The relationships between the brother/gods are left very vague for quite a longtime, but as pieces are unfurled a new mystery takes shape. I particularly enjoyed the way Akers handles his gods and how their powers originate and the deep history that is alluded to.

If anything I'd call The Horns of Ruin Swords & Science. Fans of hack and slash Fantasy just may have found the steampunky read they've been looking for. The Horns of Ruin is an energetic rollercoaster ride in a well accentuated world that needs to be further explored. The ending while satisfying does leave much left open. There has been no word yet on another Eva Forge book, but the second Jacob Burn book Dead of Veridon is schedule for June 2011 from Solaris.

Would you like some Steampunk with your Fantasy?

Tim Akers creates the world of a dead city seething with life in The Horns of Ruin. The story begins as Eva Forge, the last paladin of the dead god Morgan, escorts the leader of her cult to an appointment which marks the beginning of a quest to fulfill her oath to defend her Order against those who would destroy the last remnants of the dead warrior god's servants. Her quest leads her through the world of Ash, a world of magic and engineering that fuses steampunk and fantasy. And through this realm Eva is hacking, slashing, dodging, and creating a ruckus that would make her god proud.

It is the ruckus Eva creates that evinces she is by far the most fully developed character. The story is told through her eyes and her perspective creates a very believable bias of the world, even if that bias starts to wear thin after a time. She is the stereotypical headstrong sword-leading-the-way warrior - which works for a while but can become tiresome when character development fails to occur. This blade first perception helps provide great focus on the battle scenes and descriptions of warrior mentality but Eva does not show an evolving humanity when interacting with the main supporting characters. The supporting characters suffer from the same flaw to an even greater extent. It seems as if they were pulled out of a bag labeled "Stereotypes" and woven into the story to provide a vessel to contain the theme of the book.

It was the theme which made the book worthwhile. The depictions of battle that fill the book are entertaining and provide great imagery but the meat of the book is the history of the three brothers who became gods and the scions (such as Eva) of those gods. The scions get their magic from the gods as best explained by Barnabas, the Elder of the House of Morgan, when correcting Eva about how her armor works [Eva said the symbol of the armor was the armor]:

"The idea of the armor, you mean. The soul of the armor," he corrected. "We draw on the noetic power of Morgan's armor, and it protects us. We draw on the noetic power of his strength, the greatness of his deeds, the collective memory of his courage."

And there lies the focus of the book. Akers describes himself as the only son of a theologian and that is where his strength lies. The theogony of the three brothers and the world they created is the essence of the story. The political intrigue and fights Eva encounters help to enhance the understanding of the city of Ash and the code of the warrior to which she is bound.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who finds new worlds, new mythologies, and new magics intriguing. It is also a good read for plot hounds but those who cherish character development may be left wanting more.

One of the best steampunk adventures I've read this year

Plot Summary: Eva Forge is the last paladin - a holy warrior - for the Cult of Morgan. Their god has been dead for centuries and their numbers are dwindling, so when an assassin squad of mechanical men attacks the Fratriarch, it's clear that someone wants to hasten the cult's slow death. After their leader is captured, Eva begins kicking down doors all over the floating city of Ash in her search, and she's rather startled to find that former enemies were really friends, and vice versa. The odds are against her, but Eva is fully prepared to go out in a blaze of battle glory, as long as she can gut the right people along the way.

Eva Forge is the most glorious, meat-head heroine I've ever had the pleasure of reading. She is a single-minded warrior who believes in shooting first, and asking questions later, and she frequently reminded me of a female Dirty Harry. Eva leaves a trail of bodies and destruction in her wake, but her intentions are honorable and unshakable, and her impatience for people who would talk, discuss, and negotiate a thing to death is rather funny. Pretty much anytime she opened her mouth I was completely entertained, and smiling and sniggering at her sledgehammer delivery. I sincerely hope there will be more books about Eva, because I would follow her anywhere.

The mythology in The Horns of Ruin is meaty, but not so sophisticated that it will frustrate the reader. It does make for a great mystery though, and the truth behind the attacks on Eva's cult is exciting to unravel. The floating city of Ash is a fabulous setting with cobblestone streets and high tech monorails. It's a perfect blend of fantasy and steampunk, and it struck me as a wholly original concept. It grabbed me within the first handful of pages, and never let go. The Horns of Ruin is a swashbuckling adventure, overbrimming with sword fights, gun fights, magical incantations, and creepy mechanical assassins. It's about an honor-bound warrior who has become obsolete, but she's too damn stubborn to retire in peace. I loved it.

Aus diesen Hintergründe ist es besonders interessant und relevant, die Entscheidungsgründen des BVerfGE und in denen erwähnten, auch neu gefassten verfassungsrechtliche Thesen zu analysieren. Besonders deswegen, dass weil die Richter für ein neues Wahlrecht eine Frist bis zum Juni 2011 eingeräumt haben, kann die nächste Bundestagwahlen mit verfassungswidrigen Bundeswahlgesetz (BWG) durchgeführt werden, was auch bis heute als ein Objekt der scharfen Kritik geblieben ist.2 In dieser Hinsicht, bezieht sich die Seminararbeit die Entscheidungsgründen des Urteils des Zweiten Senats des BVerfG vom 3. In 1953, Gary Snyder returned to the Bay Area and, at age 23, enrolled in graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley, to study Asian languages and culture. He intensified his study of Chinese and Japanese, and taking up the challenge of one of his professors, Chen Shih-hsiang, he began to work on translating a largely unknown poet by the name of Han Shan, a writer with whom the professor thought Snyder might feel a special affinity. The results were magical. As Patrick Murphy noted, "These poems are something more than translations precisely because Snyder renders them as a melding of Han Shan's Chinese Ch'an Buddhist mountain spirit trickster mentality and Snyder's own mountain wilderness meditation and labor activities." The suite of 24 poems was published in the 1958 issue of The Evergreen Review, and the career of one of America's greatest poets was launched.

In 1972, Press-22 issued a beautiful edition of these poems written out by hand in italic by Michael McPherson. We are doing a new augments edition based on the old, with a new design, a preface by Lu Ch'iu-yin, and an afterword by Mr. Snyder where he discusses how he came to this work and what it meant to his development as a writer and Buddhist.

On May 11, 2012, for the Stronach Memorial Lecture at The University of California, more than fifty years after his days there as a student, Snyder offered a public lecture reflecting on Chinese poetry, Han Shan, and his continuing work as a poet and translator. This remarkable occasion was recorded and we are including a CD of it in our edition, making this the most definitive edition of Cold Mountain Poems ever published.

About the Author
Gary Snyder was born in San Francisco on May 8, 1930. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1975 and was elected to The American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters in 1987. In addition to the Bollingen Prize and the Ruth Lily Award, he won The Wallace Stevens Prize from the American Academy of Poetry in 2012. He lives in the foothills of the Sierra on a homestead he established more than 40 years ago.

Happy to sit among these cliffs...

This small book - Gary Snyder's translation of "Cold Mountain Poems" and Michael McPherson's design and calligraphy, together with woodcut illustrations from the Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting - offers something unique and lovely for the eye and for the soul. It is such a gift for today, where life is presented in speed-of-light impulse and fractured moments.

"Go ahead and let the world change - I''m happy to sit among these cliffs." And so I'm happy to sit with this book, and slowly move from page to page, immersed in the contemporary, ancient, and ageless. Each poem has its complement in the woodblock illustration on the facing page. Peaceful. Insightful. Wise. Wonderful.

and I love him dearly

Gary Snyder is a magnificent poet, and I love him dearly. But Blofeld and Red Pine's collection of Cold Mountain poems is about 300 pages long with 3 poems on the right side of each pair of pages and the chinese on the facing page. Gary Snyder's book is only 24 poems. That's it -- at least in my Kindle edition. i was disappointed.

This book has encouraged me not just to forage for myself to try new things, but to actually look around when I'm in nature. It's amazing how just three miles from my apartment in the middle of a city I was able to find such a great bounty where it seems very few people visit (the trail, while visible, was seriously overgrown).
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is wondering what foraging is like and wants a few starter tips for themselves. This book does include a few recipes as well, though it is mainly one family documenting their story.

Though it is not a how-to guide, there is still plenty of useful advice and tidbits of information to be gleaned. For example, my mother taught me to recognize Queen Anne's Lace as a very small child; I (and probably my mother) had no idea it is actually wild carrot! The conversational tone of the book, along with the inclusion of common knowledge tips like Queen Anne's Lace, made foraging seem less like a practically dead art of pioneers and crazy survivalists and more like something that was actually possible in my own life, even a skill I could become comfortable with. As such, the book serves as a comfortable stepping stone between sitting on my couch and actually heading out for a first foraging trip. I'll be picking up a few more detailed guides to foraging on my next trip to the local library, and who knows what's possible from there? Maybe the Browns will help me put a dinner or two on my own table.

When I first requested this book to read through netgalley, I thought it was going to be more of a how-to guide. Getting into gardening more and more - and canning, and freezing my garden goodies, and preserving, and probably dehydrating as well next spring, I was thrilled at the idea of reading about foraging. I did a little of that this year, digging up and using lots of wild garlic that's been growing on my parents property for as long as I can remember, and hearing stories of my family eating dandalion greens as kids.

This isn't a how to book. It's still good, it's just not what i was expecting.

The book is chatty, like sharing stories with a friend over a cup of coffee, yet interesting and informative and makes you want to get up and see what you can find in the jungles of your own neighborhood, yet it reads like a memoir.

Put it on your "To Read" list!

If you have any interest in homesteading, self-sufficiency, local foods, sustainable living, or health and fitness, this book needs to go on your "to read" list!

The book is broken down into three main sections: What We Did, Why We Decided to Start Foraging, and Lessons We Learned from Foraging. The authors start off with a Preface putting you out in the woods with them, hunting for chaga mushrooms. They immediately start with the tone that carries you through the whole book: two parts personal story, one part foraging and cooking lesson, and one part education. Those new to foraging or especially to the sustainable living and suburban homesteading movements will gather a lot from the Browns' teaching moments. Many folks are getting that nagging feeling that something isn't quite right these days, but they need some concrete facts and some encouragement from those who are already walking the walk to get them to step off the five-lane highway path and onto a trail through the woods or sidewalk in their community. There is some repetition of certain stories and information between the sections, but nothing that is a huge deal killer.

Parents, take note: if you have any concerns about what your kids are eating - the Browns share your fears. In the preface, they share the story of one of their daughters crying, as she worried that something she would eat might harm her. In our efforts to eliminate toxins, get clean water, grow non-GMO food, or whatever else we focus on in our families, we can actually scare the daylights out of the kids. This book helped me, as a mom who has done the same thing, realize how I can turn that around and make it clear that we are not acting out of fear; we are just being proactive. The Browns are very focused on keeping the family involved in their nanofarm homesteading efforts as well as their foraging adventures, and they gladly pass on stories where the foraging went well - and not quite so well.

Community is a huge issue these days: those of us who want it can't always find it, and those who want to reach out and make it don't always know how. As they work their quarter acre property, they get the neighbors involved - whether through purposeful invitations to a foraged and local food feast or just out of idle curiosity about what's going on over at their house. There were several times during my reading of this book that I wished I lived near them!

There are delightful photos and recipes placed throughout this book, but if you're looking for an identification guide for your own foraging trips, Browsing Nature's Aisles isn't it. Get an in-depth plant and mushroom guides specific to your region for that. Then go sign up for some plant walks and foraging classes with experts in your area. Look to Wendy and Eric Brown for inspiration, insight, and encouragement instead. Even if you don't find yourself out on the trail purposely looking for something to add to your next meal, you will learn a great deal and get to read about the self-sufficiency journey of a really neat family.

You don't have to have read Wendy's first book, Surviving the Apocalypse in the Suburbs, to get a great deal of enjoyment and education from this release, but you may well get the urge to do so (and I highly recommend that title as well). Part II of this book, the Browns' "Why" section, addresses food safety and security, as well as food scarcity and the increasing costs of food. That may well fuel your own fire for being more prepared, and foraging is one cog in that entire wheel of personal and family preparedness.

Educators would do well to take a look at Browsing Nature's Aisles, particularly those who homeschool or who are working in smaller schools with a Waldorf, Charlotte Mason or nature school focus. If you're teaching any kind of natural resource management, stewardship or sustainable living course, you could put it out there for your students to glean from.

Whether you have concerns about Peak Oil or emergency preparedness; have a goal to eat local as much as possible; or just generally want to learn more about the basic concepts of foraging and how folks go about it, Browsing Nature's Aisles is a great read. At the very least the Browns make sure you'll never look at the commute to work the same way again!

Interesting read and good resource!

Well-written, and interesting, this book tells about one family's quest to learn more about foraging and eating wild foods. After many years of research and growing their own foods at home, they spent one year incorporating foraged foods into at least one meal a week. The book is well-researched and explains that if one is going to eat foraged foods, you should check at least three sources to make sure that what you are eating is what you think it is and that it is not poisonous, that you should only take one third of what is edible from an area at any given time, and that it can be good to find a teacher or mentor to show you how to find edible plants in the wild. While the only "foraging" I have done is eating wild blackberries that we found growing when I was a child, I do appreciate the wisdom in this book. Compared to the concept of the doomsday preppers who stockpile massive amounts of canned goods, it seems more useful to know how to identify and eat foods that one can find commonly in the wild and in your suburban neighborhood. I don't think I will be going out foraging any time soon, considering the fact that last week I saw and smelled paint pouring out of a drain into the creek near our house, which would be the closest area for any wild foraging. I did call the city and they sent someone out and when I went back, there was no longer anything coming out of that drain. We are near the start of that creek, and it eventually dumps into a local lake where there is recreation and fishing. I am sure that the paint I saw being dumped from a construction site into the creek is not the only icky stuff that is in the creeks and in our local environment. I did learn that the weed that we cut down, but keeps coming back that we found covered with pretty black and yellow caterpillars one day is most likely milkweed and is edible and the caterpillars will be monarch butterflies, so we will stop chopping it down and leave it for the caterpillars. I think this is an excellent book and I highly recommend it. I received this book free to review from Netgalley.

About the Author
Dave Freer is an ichthyologist turned author. He lives on Flinders Island, between Australia and Tasmania, with his wife, Barbara; four dogs; four cats; and two sons, Paddy and James. His first book, The Forlorn, came out in 1999. He has coauthored novels with Eric Flint and with Mercedes Lackey, as well as written A Mankind Witch and Dragons Ring and various shorter works. Besides working as a fisheries scientist for the Western Cape shark fishery, he has worked as a commercial diver and as a relief chef at several luxury game lodges. His other interests are rock climbing, diving, fly-fishing, fly tying, wine tasting, and the smoking and salting of food. I reread Cuttlefish the first book in this series, then read two other new books by other top five favorite authors then read Steam Mole. WOW! I didn't think Dave Freer could top Cuttlefish, and then he did.

Clara and Tim are still enormous amounts of fun, and strong, well written characters. The plot points run on rails, and the supporting cast is divine.

Absolutely an incredible read.

Very nice continuation to "Cuttlefish"

If you read and enjoyed Cuttlefish, you'll definitely like Steam Mole.

Our protagonists run into various forms of prejudice, but work their way through the obstacles, and the day is saved.

Very nice world-building; characters with character.

If you have not read Cuttlefish, get that first.

An Underground Adventure for All!

Dave Freer's Cuttlefish laid the perfect foundation to Clara and Tim's story, from their blooming friendship to their dangerous adventure. After many days dodging Duke Malcolm's army, Clara and the other residents of the Cuttlefish have finally made it to the Republic of Westralia. Their journey begins anew in The Steam Mole as they adapt to life on land and all the trials that follow.

What I love about Cuttlefish and The Steam Mole is how consistent Freer remains with the steampunk and science-fiction elements. Clara is no longer confined to an illegal, coal powered submarine, but Freer easily introduces another intricate, and quite important, machine: the steam mole. The steam mole is a central part of the novel that intrigued me because it took the biggest scenes of adventure underground. It's like exploring a whole new world with the same suspenseful aura and complex storyline.

Freer extends our view of Clara's world. With her mother's sudden illness, and the fragile hope that her father is imprisoned nearby, the story's plots and subplots diverge. New characters are thrown into the growing pile of perspectives like Lampy, the young aboriginal with a dark past and bright future. Lampy reminded me of Tim because of their similar backgrounds and temperaments; both know how to survive in the most unlikeliest situations and both are the victims of prejudice based on the color of their skin. This aspect brings a certain cultural awareness that is highly overlooked in young adult literature. That it's found in a steampunk, sci-fi novel is even more of a draw.

While I did enjoy The Steam Mole and it's perfectly pieced together conclusion, I have to say that it wasn't quite the sequel to Cuttlefish that I'd been expecting. By the end of the story I got the impression that the characters were settling in their new lives, not gearing up for a possible future adventure. When the subplots finally converged and the wrongs set right, the outcome felt as though forced. Freer made it too easy and not as nerve-wrecking as the explosive conclusion of Cuttlefish. I really love Clara and Tim, their ability to tough it out is awesome, I'm hoping to find their story continue in another novel. Hopefully, one with just as much action and alternate history!
