Maddening (spoiler warning)

I wanted to love this book because it sounded like a fun little steampunk western romp. However one thing kept me from enjoying the book....nothing happens.

Don't get me wrong, things do happen but I hardly consider one sentence descriptions to be action scenes. The gunfight at the O.K. Corral? Half a page. The climactic showdown that's been promised for the entire book? Half a page. The ending? A 1 page cliffhanger that sets it up for a sequel.

The rest of the book consists of getting breakfast and chatting in saloons and a wh@re house. Characters go talk to another character for a page, then back to the saloon. They wake up, get breakfast, go visit a character, then back to the saloon. Oh, Bat Masterson is, get this, turned into a bat! So there's plenty of dialogue about how to keep him caged up at night. It's 300 pages of this. I'm not even exaggerating, nothing happens except talk, talk, talk, solve the problem in a paragraph. There's no exciting or engaging solutions to any problems in this book, they're just there and then they're not.

I'm only giving this 3 stars because the dialogue and characterisations are very well written. Other than that I found it to be an absolute sleeping pill. Don't be fooled by the book description and go in expecting an action novel because it's not. I like Mr. Resnick's work but this book just felt completely lazy and phoned in. He had some good ideas that could have been alot of fun but didn't quite seem to know what to do with them. Seek out Ivory or Dragon America instead if you want a good Mike Resnick novel.

Steampunk fans will enjoy the ride, but The West was left in the dust, and I mourn its absence.

Plot Summary: The year is 1881, and Tombstone, Arizona is a town like no other. Served by horseless stagecoaches and illuminated by electric lights, this dusty town hosts the premiere inventors in the country, Thomas Edison and Ned Buntline. The U.S. government charges the Earps - Wyatt, Virgil, and Morgan - with protecting Mr. Edison from all enemies, and they send for their friends, Doc Holliday and Bat Masterson. This dream team will face not just the Clanton gang, but some fearsome medicine men, and a quick-draw corpse that used to be Johnny Ringo.

The Buntline Special: A Weird West Tale succeeds with the steampunk, but it never cowboy'd up to the culture. I think it had the potential to be great, but there were too many misses along the way. For instance, the dialog was disappointingly bland. I wanted to hear the Old West come alive in the poetry and cadence of the language, but everyone's speech was far too contemporary for a historical setting. I kept trying to insert an accent, but it wouldn't stick. Just a little bit of Mark Twain's voice would have given the whole story a flavor of authenticity. The only exchanges with any spark occurred between Doc Holliday and his sometime lady-love, Big Nose Kate:

He was suddenly overcome by a paroxysm of coughing, and sat down again. She brought him a handkerchief, and he handed it back to her a few minutes later when he was done.

"That's more blood than usual," she noted, staring at it.

"I don't know what you expect me to do about it. Cough out the window, maybe."

She stared at him for a long moment. "I don't know which to do," she said at last, "nurse you or kick you in the balls."

"Do I get a vote?" he asked. (241)

I was excited to see this Wild West dream team of gunfighters assembled, but the reason behind it was too vague to drum up any further enthusiasm. We learn that the U.S. Government wants to expand across the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean, and they believe that Thomas Edison is their single best asset for overcoming the magic-wielding Native Americans. The Earps, Bat Masterson, and Doc Holliday are to protect Edison and his partner, Ned Buntline at all costs. This leads to the infamous gunfight at the O.K. Corral, but unfortunately the setup was so generic that it didn't give me much of a mystery to chew on in between.

The steampunk elements brought a glow to my brass-plated heart, and here is where The Buntline Special shined. The descriptions and illustrations were the stuff of steamies' dreams, and I happily plunged into the mechanized world of horseless carriges, gatling revolvers, and, er, metal "working girls." It was all well done, and by far, my favorite part of the story.

Steampunk fans will enjoy the ride, but the west was left in the dust, and I mourn its absence. This could have been amazing if The Buntline Special had truly joined The Weird with The Old West.

It's About Time Someone Started This Conversation!

As soon as I began to read Janet's book, I knew I wouldn't be getting much else done in my life. I was taken in and blown away. If you are a fundamentalist, then I don't think you're going to like what she says. If you are open to learning about what it's like to be a child raised in an environment where your caregivers withhold medical treatment, inflict corporal punishment, or refuse to protect you against sexual abuse from those in authority, this book *is* for you.

For far too long, religion has been something beyond approach. We hear of a parent beating a child to death, and we demand justice. We hear that that parent was following god's will, and then we step away because this is a religious matter.

Janet is not asking for a world free of religion. Janet is suggestion that religious leaders and law enforcement work together to create a safer world for children. Those on the outside of religion don't understand the resolve and passion of those inside religions. They don't understand that arguing with religious extremist does not help. If you don't believe me, go and read the comments on the book "To Train A Child" by Michael Pearl. Arguing in that context doesn't make the world safer for children. Instead, Janet is appealing to all who will listen that we need to work together.

My hope is that pastors, priests, and other religious leaders work with our justice system to better understand each other. That reporting abuse to the authorities does not diminish someone's faith or spiritual beliefs. Having a societal conversation about corporal punishment is not equal to whether or not there's a god. Take the taboo out of religion.

I know all to well how dangerous religion can be. I've paid a dear price for the religious devotion of my parents and church. Please give Janet a chance to open a powerful conversation. Please find the courage to speak up and be heard in that conversation. Put your fear and hatred aside and listen. Our children deserve a safe place to grow up. And, it is our responsibility to make this happen.

Really fascinating, and very well researched

This was really a fascinating book. It took me awhile to plow through it, mainly because - especially at first - it's a bit "research dense" but once it got more into telling some of the personal stories of the people interviewed by the author it moved quickly.

In addition to being fascinating, this book is also: shocking; maddening; eye-opening; incredibly sad; and just downright hard to believe. (I don't mean that the author's research is faulty; I mean that it's difficult to accept that the things she describes in this book happen on a regular basis.)

One thing that surprised me while reading this book was learning how much has been written on various aspects of this topic. This book is very well researched, and cites numerous sources. It kind of made me wonder how this kind of stuff can still be going on, given the fact that it's obviously not a secret that it's happening. Of course, there's also plenty written to support the views of the nut jobs who perform and/or condone these horrific acts against children, so I guess it balances out.

There was just one area where I thought the book was a bit deficient. The author describes many instances of children dying as a result of religious maltreatment (physical abuse, medical neglect, etc.) but there is very little mention made of how the parents felt after their children died (often due to their own abuse or neglect.) I would have liked a lot more information about whether any light bulbs went on after they saw their children actually dead, or whether it was just accepted as "God's will."

I have always believed that the most dangerous force operating in the modern world is religious fanaticism, and this book helped confirm that.

A "Must Read"

This is an important and timely book which takes head on a subject too long in the shadows. It's the first comprehensive, detailed and thoroughly researched look at the downside of religion as child abuse. And it's about time. Religion has for far too long had a pass when it comes to the harm that is done in its name - against children as well as other believers. The remedies Ms. Heimlich suggests in the last chapter of the book are a good start to eliminating the abuse as well as the cover-ups that appear to be so prevalent in organized religion. Bravo! This book should be read by everyone in America.

A Stirring, Poignant, Evocative Masterpiece

I had the privilege of reading a pre-publication manuscript of this book. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Kao Kalia Yang tells the story of her family--which in Hmong culture extends far beyond one's parents and siblings. From the jungles of Laos, where her family lived before she was born, across the treacherous Mekong River, into Thailand's Ban Vinai refugee camp, and ultimately here to the United States, Yang tells us of the alliance her Hmong people made with the US, the dangers they experienced as a result of America's withdrawal from Southeast Asia, their harrowing flight from the only country they had ever known, and the indignities suffered and hopes and dreams shared while living an uncertain life in a refugee camp. At the center of this unforgettable tale is Yang's grandmother, who struggles to keep her family together in the camp, but must ultimately surrender to the inevitability of their parting. Through Yang and her family we are connected to the challenges, pains, joys, and triumphs of the refugee/immigrant experience and the love and dedication of a family unlike any we have met before, yet as familiar and comfortable as any we are likely to know. We are drawn into Yang's seductive prose, the poignancy of her family's and her own circumstances, and the hope that their suffering, including that of her grandmother, who ultimately comes to America, will somehow be redeemed in this new country that in many ways necessitated their flight from Laos. This irresistable and moving debut--and its author--deserve a wide and appreciative audience.

This book is beautifully written. She speaks at one point about losing her voice, but she has found it within the pages. I purchased this book originally because I wanted to know more about the lives of some of my Hmong students, and I am so glad that I did.
Many people do not realize the sacrifice of the Hmong people or their role in helping the Americans during the war. I encourage everyone to read this. You will smile. You will cry. You will learn.

Here's how to tap "trillions of dollars in potential value at the intersection of public, private and nonprofit sectors"

As I indicate in my review of another book, Gary Klein's Seeing What Others Don't: The Remarkable Ways We Gain Insights, I realized long ago that the true value of most (if not all) breakthrough insights is best determined by the nature and extent of the disruptive impact they have on the given status quo. That has certainly proven true of analytics, cloud computing, mobile phones, and social media. As William Eggers and Paul Macmillan observe, "The defining feature of Western-style government -- its success in catering to a wide variety of citizen needs -- has become its greatest liability. Governments are going broke while contorting themselves into ever-stranger positions to satisfy often contradictory constituent demands." In the United States, that is true of many municipalities, counties, and even states in which legitimate citizen needs far exceed the resources available to meet therm. "Fortunately, government is no longer the only game in town when it comes to societal problem solving. Society is witnessing a step change in how it deals with its own problems -- a shift from a government-dominated model to one in which the government is just one player among many."

I agree with Eggers and Macmillan that a new economy -- what they characterize as "the solution economy" -- is emerging and it trades in social outcomes. Its currencies include public data, reputation, credibility, and social impact. "The business models are unusual, and the motivations range from new notions of public accountability to moral obligation to even shareholder value." This is indeed a "new game" and the information, insights, and counsel that Eggers and Macmillan provide in abundance will help their reader to understand the new "rules" as well as terms and conditions that may determine initiatives' success or failure.

In their opinion, trillions of dollars in value potentially lies largely untapped at the new intersections of the public, private, and non-profit sectors. They explain in this timely book "how to unlock this value." These are among the passages of greatest interest and value to me:

Long ago, Albert Einstein observed that "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them," and, that it is "insanity" to keep thinking and doing what we have done thus far and expect different results.

Obviously William Eggers and Paul Macmillan agree but when concluding this book, they are confident that technologies and business models will prove sufficient to the challenges we now face. "New problems will emerge. Luckily, the fundamental strength of the solution economy is that challenges become opportunities for progress." I hope they are right.

Great Read

I just got finished reading the Solution Revolution and really enjoyed the read. It provides a compelling journey through the power of new approaches and technologies to solving public problems.

Whether you are a political appointee, government leader, or civic entrepreneur, I highly recommend you give it a read as it provides both compelling case studies as well as a roadmap to leverage these new approaches.

As a social entrepreneur myself (worked in government as well as founding a non-profit and a for-profit targeted government problems), I believe 100% in Eggers vision that we need business, government, and social enterprises to team up together to solve these huge problems.

I hope we'll see even more of this thinking in the future.

What might the Solution Revolution imply for non-profits?

The Solution Revolution is an informative, well-written and topical synthesis of the solution economy as it is unfolding around us. My colleagues create a compelling view of the innovative ways people are tackling tough social problems.

I was particularly interested in how it might relate to the non-profit sector. For centuries, unmet social needs have elicited action and non-profits have long been at the forefront of these efforts. Non-profits have leveraged the motivation of their people, collaborative partnerships, and committed volunteers to make a meaningful impact. The Solution Revolution describes new approaches to address or even eradicate chronic social problems through innovative markets, economic ecosystems and collaborative cross-sectoral networks. These new approaches purposefully blur siloed thinking and encourage innovative models of teaming, create environments that harness market forces, and leverage new technologies (like social, mobile, cloud, and analytics) that change the game further. What might the `Solution Revolution' imply for non-profits?

The Solution Revolution dynamic is real, growing and evolving at an accelerating pace. This may be exciting to many non-profits that see opportunities for new sources of funding, for increased ability to scale, for increased relevance, and, most importantly, to contribute to even greater social impact. This new reality may be equally threatening to many non-profits. While wildly diverse, the majority of non-profits tend to be small, with limited capacity, and many have overlapping focus. Not all may survive.

This Solution Revolution needs to profit from the strengths and attributes of non-profits. Non-profits have an important role in the broader ecosystem that should not be underestimated. In many countries, non-profits are numerous and ubiquitous. They are built on the passion and commitment of motivated staff and volunteers. They are often on the ground and at the front-line of social problems, with unparalleled local and contextual knowledge. They can engage directly with those in need. They often have lower cost structures. They have a hard-earned trust and credibility with partners, communities, and those served. They can act as important convenors and provide valuable input to collaborative problem solving. They also have an abundance of energy from the creative and community-minded people that have quietly provided meaningful service for decades.

Non-profits are also well positioned to inject cautionary considerations into how these markets and economic ecosystems are developed to ensure that vulnerabilities and sensitivities around certain populations are well understood, and in how to avoid intended consequences.

Non-profits will need to change to flourish and to remain as critical contributors in the new environment. With often limited capacity, they will need to be open to new ways of working with others (and the implication on their historic degrees of independence). They will need to challenge their dependence on key individuals. They will need to embrace new technologies and the exciting opportunities they provide to connect and have an impact, regardless of scale. They will need to fully appreciate the new currencies for public value - going beyond traditional monetary currencies to include new impact currencies (ie social outcomes, data, reputation, etc). Many will need to challenge the degree to which they are geographically defined. They need to work with governments to have them put in place the necessary tax incentives and legal designations to support different kinds of organizations. They will also need to build capacity in measurement (relating to evidence-based results) and in developing the mechanisms for constructing more sophisticated collaborative networks.

I hope that this book helps to encourage important dialogue around not only the new and emerging players in the space, but also around the implications for the non-profits that are already so uniquely positioned in the social impact environment.

An exciting new book from the Replica series.

Andy knows that he's one of twelve genetically enhanced clones just like him. He knows he was adopted, but he has no memories of his mother. His father claims his mother died, but his father lied about a lot of things. Andy remembers Mr. Devon kidnapping him when he was a small child -- but what were his motives? Now he and Chris have set out to discover what the Organization is up to, and in the process Andy hopes to discover his origins and Mr. Devon's true motives. This was a great book because we finally discovered the truth about Andy, his parents, Mr. Devon, and more. Any Replica fan should definitely read this book.

VERY VERY VERY VERY GOOD BOOK~we learn all about Andy (duh!) I can't say too much because it will give the book away, but I recommend it to anyone who is going to continue reading Replica. You wouldn't feel complete if you don't. :)

I've read all of the replica books before this one. I love the stories but I think the author could have done a better part on actually writing it. Nevertheless I love this book series and this book. It really makes you think about if it happened in real life.

A priceless treasure comes within reach

San Francisco, 1980s: A knock on the door. The unexpected visitor is a young Chinese man named Jimmy. He has read a newspaper article referring to anthropologist Ellen Christie as "the bone lady" and wants her to examine a skull he believes belongs to Peking Man.

Those ancient bones have been missing since 1941. At the prospect of such priceless treasure within reach, Ellen throws caution to the winds. She climbs on the back of Jimmy's motorcycle and they roar off to Chinatown.

When she holds the skull in her hands Ellen is mesmerized, but before she can question Jimmy, his older brother Dan bursts in. Within minutes they are assaulted by two thugs who had followed Dan. Ellen, Jimmy and Dan escape through a secret tunnel and Jimmy disappears.

What follows is a journey through another time, another place, as Ellen and Dan search Chinatown block by block, looking for Jimmy. The author paints a harrowing picture of a Chinatown that tourists never see, a warren of immigrants living in squalor and despair. Also emerging are a portrait of Jimmy, who devotes his life to helping others, and a revealing look at the resilience of the immigrants he works with.

Ellen and Dan must question people without revealing anything that would start a storm of rumors about the reappearance of long-lost fossils. Ellen is constantly torn between her concern for the safety of the ancient bones and her concern for the living people she comes to admire and respect. She must also deal with her growing attraction to Dan, a handsome, no-nonsense lawyer, and her out-of-the-blue brush with death.

In this slim volume (175 pages) the author touches on 500,000 years of human evolution without slowing the plot's momentum. The startling denouement comes in the aftermath of a Chinese New Year's parade.

In her Introduction to SKULDUGGERY, Carolyn Hart writes: "Ellen's challenge occurs in the San Francisco Chinatown of the 1980s, evoking a part of the past of American Chinese, whose families came to this country as immigrants, as so many of our forebears did, and stayed to become a part of the rich and varied tapestry that makes America truly a land created by those who dare."

I will never again think of San Francisco's Chinatown as simply an exotic collection of shops and restaurants.

A powerful suspense novel by a great author

Anthropologist Ellen Christie has a chance meeting with the infamous Peking Man (the anicent Chinese bones that were last seen in 1941) when a stranger, Jimmy Lee, frantically calls on her to identify a skull. Ellen is convinced that the skull is Peking Man and begs Jimmy to show her the rest of the bones. However before Jimmy is given a chance he disappears, and that starts a chase to find Jimmy and the Peking Man bones. Ellen is helped in the chase by Jimmy's brother, Dan Lee.

I don't read very many suspense novels. The truth of it is that I just enjoy the pace of cozy mysteries so much. However, when I learnt that Seventh Street Books was re-releasing some of Carolyn Hart's earlier books I was interested in reading them. I absolutely love Carolyn Hart's Death on Demand series so I couldn't wait to see what her earlier books would be like.

Well let me say, despite not being a big fan of suspense, I loved Skulduggery. I naturally have an affection for history, having taken a few history classes in University, and I found myself wrapped up in this story about the missing bones of the Peking Man. Skulduggery is shorter than her Death on Demand books, at just 200 pages, but it kept me absolutely glued to every single page.

There is no doubt in my mind that Carolyn Hart is worthy of the title of "American Queen of Crime". She writes a powerful story in Skulduggery, where the reader will hold her heart in her hands hoping that Ellen Christie and Dan Lee can find his brother and the bones in time.

I highly recommend Skulduggery to all mystery fans. Yes it is suspenseful but it is not a thriller, and I think that all mystery fans will find it a thoroughly enjoyable read.

exciting amateur sleuth

In 1980s San Francisco Jimmy Lee asks physical anthropologist Dr. Ellen Christie to come with him to Chinatown. In a basement, Jimmy shows Ellen a strange looking skull. Stunned Ellen identifies the fossil as part of the "Peking Man" group. Two thugs arrive and accost Jimmy. He and the rare skull vanish.

Ellen and Jimmy's brother Dan investigate where Jimmy may have found the Peking Man unaware that the skull and other bones were shipped from China in 1941 to keep put of the hands of the Japanese army. As the pair begins to unravel Jimmy's recent activities, others seeking the precious find will kill anyone in their way.

This is a reprint of an exciting amateur sleuth mystery that superbly uses the premise of the missing Peking Man bones as the heart of this mystery. Fast-paced from the moment Jimmy shows his treasure to Ellen, readers also obtain insight into the complex people of Chinatown. Fans will enjoy Skulduggery.

In that mind-boggler, a journalist with computer problems upgrades from the familiar, platonic OSs to the titular system; the different systems operate on the theories of the philosophers referenced, causing some very interesting problems when the journalist connects to the Internet with its wealth of contradictory information. Ken MacLeod's "Jesus Christ, Reanimator" is an interesting take on the second coming, replete with fascinating rationalizations by both scientific and Christian establishments, none of which wants to take Jesus on faith. Louise Marley tells a time-travel story about a particular performance instruction, p dolce, in the music of Brahms. Other contributions by such familiar and new names as Larry Niven and Brenda Cooper, Mike Resnick and Nancy Kress, Gene Wolfe, and Paul DiFiippo fill out a worthy menu of engrossing forays into wildly, creatively varied futures. ...from the Cutting Edge

Fast Forward 1 once again demonstrates Lou Anders' editing prowess (his Live Without a Net and Futureshocks are also excellent). The tagline identifies the collection as "future fiction from the cutting edge," and almost every story offers up an intriguing view of the future from some of the field's best writers.

Robert Charles Wilson's "YFL 500" opens the anthology with a gripping character tale regarding intellectual property, art, and theft in a post-scarcity world. Paolo Bacigalupi's "Small Offerings" is a chilling tale of sacrifice on an ecologically damned Earth. "Plotters and Shooters," by Kage Baker, is a lighthearted "Lord of the Flies"-esque chronicle of the rise of hackers and geeks as the defenders of mankind in a new age.

Indeed, in a collection of 19 short stories and 2 poems (the latter a refreshing addition courtesy of Robyn Hitchcock), only 4 stories don't seem to belong. Elizabeth Bear's "The Something-Dreaming Game" and Louise Marley's "p dolce," while well-written, deal in concepts already well-traversed throughout the genre. Pamela Sargent's "A Smaller Government," while an entertaining satire, is more of a political fantasy than a work of science fiction. And George Zebrowski's "Settlements" is too trite and rife with tropes to be considered "cutting edge" - a story of mysterious aliens with advanced technology imposing peace on a violent, adolescent humanity.

Where the collection truly shines, though, are in the off-kilter stories. Tony Ballantyne's "Aristotle OS" is a comedic, philosophical view of the world through one of the most pervasive, defining facets of our society: the computer operating system. "Jesus Christ, Reanimator" is Ken MacLeod's rational look at the possible second coming of the Christ - charming in its grounded outlook amidst a momentous religious event. Mary A. Turzillo's "Pride" is the endearing tale of a boy and his sabretooth kitten. Finally, the perfect capstone to the anthology is Paul Di Filippo's "Wikiworld" - one of the most brilliant short stories I've read - an adventure through a foreign but realistic near-future, where political lines are drawn between usergroups and power, prestige, and popularity ebb and flow organically between the real world and the virtual.

While the writing and stories are excellent, it is the variety of worlds and tales that makes the anthology truly compelling. Having enjoyed the majority of the book, I can safely say that Fast Forward holds something for everyone. One can only hope that Fast Forward 2 is future fact.

Great Anthology...a must for SF readers and writers...

I was able to read the ARC of this book prior to its release, and I was very, very pleased with the selections. I enjoyed 14/21 stories in this, with Robert Charles Wilson's, Paolo Bacigalupi's, Elizabeth Bear's, Louise Marley's, and the Mike Resnick/Nancy Kress piece being my personal faves for their "wow" factor. I recognized some of the stories in this anthology were not to my particular SF taste (and some stories I wished were written a bit differently, but that's me), but most of these pieces had good/fun premises, and it was nice to see a variety of stories in this anthology.

I'd definitely recommend this anthology to anyone reading (or writing) science fiction, and I'm not just saying that because I got the ARC: I think I'll pick up the actual copy myself, when I get the chance. Some of these stories really blew me away, and while I would've bought the anthology solely for Bacigalupi's work, I wouldn't have minded paying for the rest of it either, if that makes sense. In other words, there's something in here for everyone, and there's some really, really good stories here.

Also, an interesting stat that some people won't care about: 9/21 stories are penned by women (though two of those nine are co-written by men). The reason this stat jumps out at me is the fact that I've heard several women complain about how when you pick up an anthology of SF stories, there are few to no women featured. It's something I've noticed myself, so a big shout-out to Lou Anders for both sampling a variety of SF and not limiting anthology slots to the male population of the SF community.

Some Great Stories, Some Average Ones, Very Good Collection

I don't read a lot of anthologies. No particular reason really other than I tend to read them a story at a time in between novels. Thus they take forever for me to finish, and oftentimes I've forgotten the less memorable stories by the time I actually finish the whole collection. If I were smart, I'd do a quick paragraph on each story as I finish them. In case you're curious, I'm not and I didn't. So instead I'm going to do more of a short review about the overall tone of Fast Forward 1: Future Fiction from the Cutting Edge edited by Lou Anders and give a few of my favorites.

Anders, in his introduction to the anthology, reminds us that, "To a very real extent, we live today in the science fiction of the past." He's so right - just look at William Gibson's notion of cyberspace in Neuromancer (1984). Fast Forward 1 is all about looking at the implications of technology on society, but not today's technology. Anders and his all-star cast of authors are instead looking at the future of tomorrow and millenium from now to push the envelope not only about what technology we can expect to see, but how it will impact our lives. Anders goes on to say that, "it is the future of science fiction itself (and that of science fiction publishing) that some have called into question, and lately it seems as if the very idea of the future has been under threat." In his essay "The Omega Glory," Pulitzer prize-winning author Michael Chabon summarizes Anders' thoughts:

"I don't know what happened to the Future. It's as if we lost our ability, or our will, to envision anything beyond the next hundred years or so, as if we lacked the fundamental faith that there will in fact be any future at all beyond that not-too-distant date."

Interestingly, one of Anders' contributors, Paolo Bacigalupi said in an interview with Locus Magazine:

"Maybe science fiction lost its track a little bit, and got off on some lines of speculation which are pretty interesting but not necessarily connected to today's questions, as previously it had been core to our conception of ourselves and where we were headed."

I think Bacigalupi's view and Chabon's desire to continue pushing the envelop are well blended by Anders. Fast Forward 1 shows how the world will change just over the next hill in stories like Elizabeth Bear's The Something-Dreaming Game or Mary Turzillo's Pride. It looks beyond and into the distant future with stories like The Terror Bard by Larry Niven and Brenda Cooper or No More Stories by Stephen Baxter.

For me the anthology works best in the stories that fell in between. Not so esoteric as to be difficult to identify with, and not so near term as to be uninspiring. These stories shined because they not only pushed the science fiction envelope, but found a way to use that technology to pull back the shades on the cultural and ethical dilemmas of today. To me, and Anders who I quote, "science fiction is a tool for making sense of a changing world. It is the genre that looks at the implications of technology on society, which in this age of exponential technological growth makes it the most relevant branch of literature going."

Haunting stories like Bacigalupi's Small Offerings and George Zebrowski's Settlements confront our ability to sustain humanity. A Smaller Government by Pamela Sargent parodies the U.S. government, while Jesus Christ, Reanimator by Ken MacLeod takes on faith. Vanity is a popular subject reflected in p dolce by Louise Marley and The Hour of the Sheep by Gene Wolfe. There are very few failures in the anthology. Some are not terribly memorable like The Girl's Hero Mirror Says He's Not the One by Jennifer Robson or Kage Baker's Plotters and Shooters, but in the moment they are compelling and well worth the read.

Perhaps the most thought provoking work in the book is Anders' introduction which I have quoted from liberally. He provides a thought provoking discussion about where the genre has been, is going, and will find itself in the years ahead. It's well worth a read all on its own and can be read on-line in its entirety (here). Anders was recently awarded a Hugo for his editing prowess and as far as I can tell from Fast Forward 1 and the dozens of other Pyr titles I've read, it is well deserved.

As I stated in the early parts of this review, I don't read many anthologies so rating this is one tough. I can say that there was no story I rolled my eyes at or felt like skipping and there are certainly several stories I would hold up against any I've read.

In the mood for a science fiction anthology? Definitely pick this one up.
