Fascist Scotland, by Gavin Bowd

On 10 May 1941, Rudolf Hess, Deputy Fuhrer of the Third Reich, entered Scottish airspace in an ill-fated attempt to discuss peace with the Duke of Hamilton. For the Nazis, Hess was the victim of 'tragic hallucinations'. But how far had Hess really flown from reality? Although Fascism in Britain is normally associated with England, and especially the East End of London, and even then dismissed as a marginal political phenomenon, Fascism did find support in Scottish society. Scotland has provided its own cohort of idealists, fanatics and traitors for extreme racist, nationalist and authoritarian politics. From Dumfries to Alness, one of the main ideologies of the first half of the twentieth century found its standard-bearers. But when Fascism crossed the Cheviots, it found itself in a restless part of a multi-nation state, riven by sectarian hatreds. Rudolf Hess felt the natives looked at him 'in a compassionate way', but Scottish Fascism had to carve out a niche in a crowded market for bigotry. In this book Gavin Bowd relates a fascinating and little-known part of our history which reveals some uncomfortable truths which are bound to stimulate debate even now.

new insights
By davidh
This is one of the new wave of books appearing in post-devolution Scotland looking at British history from top-down rather than from London-up. These books are rescuing Scottish history from its usual humble place in the footnotes of metropolitan studies. Here the author has used rich sources, notably the little magazines and newsletters of the fascist organizations, which tried enthusiastically to keep supporters' morale up in Scotland by announcing steady success. At times this push for fascism was simply comic, notably the solemn decision that a neutral gray kilt was to be worn with the black shirt, to avoid clan rivalries. Racism in Scottish academia is traced from the views of anatomist Robert Knox, through to those of Franco apologist Prof Charles Sarolea, and the concern about the Edinburgh-originated journal 'Mankind Quarterly'. Far-right candidates obtained only derisory votes in the Scottish cities but the citizens were not necessarily on the high moral ground, being more concerned with the catholic influx than alleged international Jewish plots. Even the Scottish Italians were cool about Mussolini and at a time when politics-by-public meeting was the norm, the Left could always disrupt city Fascist meetings: the fascists got a hearing only in small Border towns. More sinister was the fascism of Scottish conservative politicians, and these including Hitler's greatest admirer, Captain Archibald Maule Ramsay M.P., who, while interned during the war, was ever hopeful, like other Scottish aristocrats (and his wife), of a post-war job under Hitler.

anti-Nationalist rubbish
By othoniaboys
Although many of the facts presented may indeed be true, the truth can be twisted to serve special agendas, such as trying to tar the SNP with the brush of fascism in order to scare Scots voters away from voting Yes in the September 2014 referendum. Yeats and Pound admired Mussolini, but does that prove anything about whether Ireland and the USA were correct to break away from England?

Very Good basic Outline of the Life and ministry of St. Francis of Assisi
By Brother Jack Isbell, OFC
This is a very good review of the Life and Mission of St. Francis of Assisi. it is written by Br. Bonaventure, OFM ( St. Bonventure was canonized as a Saint at a later date). The author lived and worked with the first Franciscan Brothers who knew St. Francis. His telling of miracles during the Saint Francis's life and after his death are somewhat questionable. Otherwise the writing is easy to read and helpful in seeing the account by the author who actually knew St. Francis.

one At the front of the classroom, the boy rapped a gavel on the desk. "I hereby call this meeting of the Parkside Middle School Student Council to order."

Immediately Amy could feel her eyelids begin to droop. She always had a hard time staying awake during these meetings. If she had only known how boring the student council would be, she would never have run in the election. But she had run, and she had won, and it was too late for regrets. She was now one of eighteen representatives, all of whom looked like they were about to fall asleep too.

Except maybe for Carrie Nolan, another rep from the seventh grade. There was a twitchy little smile on her face, as if she had some sort of secret. But Amy figured that if Carrie knew something special, it couldn't possibly have anything to do with student council. The most exciting news that month had been about someone dropping plastic bottles in the paper recycling bins. After calling the meeting to order, President Cliff Fields directed the secretary to read the minutes of the previous meeting. That took all of about thirty seconds. The minutes were approved, the vice-president called the roll, the treasurer gave the budget report, and the president called for old business. Since nothing had happened at the last meeting, there wasn't any old business.

"Is there any new business?" Cliff asked. There wasn't much hope in his voice.

But a hand actually went up. Surprised, Cliff said, "The president recognizes Carrie Nolan."

Carrie rose. "As chair of the student travel committee, I have been asked by Dr. Noble to meet with all seventh-grade student council representatives. We're supposed to decide where the seventh grade will go for the annual class trip."

"What's the big deal?" Cliff asked. "The seventh grade always goes to the state capital."

Amy could tell by the twinkle in Carrie's eyes that she was about to spill her secret. "Not this year," Carrie said. "We don't even have to stay in California. Dr. Noble said that Parkside got a special grant for student travel, and there's enough money for the seventh grade to go anywhere in the United States."

Cliff stared at her in disbelief. "No way."

"Yes way," Carrie replied. "All the seventh-grade reps should stay after this meeting so we can choose a place for our trip."

A ninth-grade representative exploded. "That's not fair! When I was in the seventh grade, we had to go to Sacramento."

"Yeah, so did we," echoed an eighth-grader. "What about the other grades? Are we getting special trips?"

"No, nothing else changes," Carrie replied. "Only the seventh grade goes on an annual class trip, just like always."

"That stinks!" someone yelled. "Why should this year's seventh grade get better treatment?"

Carrie grinned. "You want to go tell Dr. Noble this isn't fair?" There were more than a few snickers in the room. Nobody, not even the student council president, would have the gall to complain to their intimidating principal that this year's seventh grade was getting a special deal.

There was no more new business, so the meeting was adjourned. As the eighth- and ninth-grade representatives left, many of them shot envious looks at the six seventh-graders who stayed behind.

"Go to Hawaii," one of them advised before leaving. "Can we?" Justin Kelly asked Carrie. "Hawaii sounds great."

"What about Alaska?" Molly Cohn wanted to know. "I'm not sure," Carrie said. "Dr. Noble said anywhere in the U.S., but I think that means just the states that are attached."

"It would," Justin grumbled.

"Oh, shut up," Carrie replied. "Who's got a serious idea?"

"Orlando, Florida," Max Barstow declared. "Disney World."

"Yeah, super idea!" Larry Moore exclaimed. "We could go to Universal Studios and the beaches."

"That's crazy," Molly objected. "We've got Disneyland right in Anaheim. And movie studios, and plenty of beaches too."

"Yeah, but everyone's sick of the Pacific Ocean," Max argued. "In Florida, you've got the Atlantic."

"And the Gulf of Mexico," Larry added.

Carrie shook her head. "It's gotta be someplace educational, guys."

Amy visualized a map of the United States and considered the possibilities. "How about the Southwest?" she suggested. "The Grand Canyon, the Petrified Forest. Indian reservations."

"Lots of kids have gone on vacations there," Molly pointed out.

"Then what about the Rocky Mountains?" Amy asked. "A hiking trip would be cool."

"Everyone's gone hiking in the Rocky Mountains," Justin said. "Okay, maybe not everyone, but I think most kids would rather go to a city."

"How about New York?" Larry asked.

Max yawned. "Been there, done that."

Carrie frowned. "We're not choosing a place just for you, Max."

Amy had a thought. "You guys ever been to Washington, D.C.?"

That got a buzz going. Everyone started talking at once, about the White House, and the Smithsonian, and all the sights of the nation's capital. "I've got a pen pal on the East Coast," Molly said, "and she says D.C. is the most popular place for East Coast kids to go on class trips."

"Have any of you been there before?" Carrie asked.

They all shook their heads--except Amy.

"You've been to Washington?" Carrie asked her.

"Yes, sort of. I was . . . I was born in D.C. But I left when I was a baby, so I don't remember anything."

Born . . . that was the best word she could come up with to describe what had happened in Washington, D.C., almost thirteen years ago. She couldn't very well tell her classmates that she had been created there.

Washington, D.C. A tingling began in her heart and spread throughout her body. The sensation wasn't simply a reaction to the idea of seeing the White House, or the Pentagon, or any of the capital's other major sights. It came from the notion of seeing where it had all begun. Where she had begun.

So when the seventh-grade reps took a vote, Amy joined the majority in enthusiastic support for Washington as the destination for the class trip. Of course, their decision was subject to the principal's approval, but Amy didn't think there would be any problem. Dr. Noble might have objected to Disney World, but there was no denying the educational value of the nation's capital.

That was why Amy felt pretty confident at lunchtime, when she told her best friend, Tasha Morgan, about the plans for the class trip.

"Washington!" Tasha squealed.

"Shhh," Amy hissed. "It's not official yet. But if  Dr. Noble approves our suggestion, she'll announce it  tomorrow."

Tasha obediently lowered her voice. "That is so cool. We're going to Washington!" Then, after a second, she said, "Well, at least I'm going to Washington."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Amy asked.

Tasha answered her with another question. "How do you think your mother's going to feel about this?"

Amy didn't respond right away. She knew what Tasha was implying. Other kids' mothers or fathers wouldn't have any problem agreeing to a school-sponsored trip. But Amy's mother was a little--actually, a lot--more cautious than other kids' parents.

She'd be particularly nervous about Amy's going to Washington, D.C.--for the same reason that Amy was so excited about going. The city where it had all begun could give Amy more understanding, more knowledge of herself. But it could also be one of the most dangerous places on earth for her to be.

Yes, there was definitely a possibility that her mother might object to the trip. She might even refuse to give Amy permission to go. But Amy suddenly had a bright idea, a way to get around any problems.

"What are you grinning about?" Tasha demanded.

"I was just thinking," Amy mused. "Don't they always ask parents to chaperone these trips?"

How it all began.
By Rebecca Herman
For the annual seventh-grade class trip at Parkside this year, the school has recieved a grant that will enable the students to travel to any destination in the United States. Amy, a student council member, suggests Washington, D.C. - the place where she was "born" as part of the cloning experiment Project Crescent. Amy thinks visiting Washington will give her some insight into her origins. Interspersed with Amy's adventures touring Washington with her classmates are her mother's experiences working on Project Crescent thirteen years ago. Recently finished with graduate school, working to support her little brother Neil, who was dying of a rare genetic disorder, Nancy Candler was searching for work that would actually mean something. She found it on Project Crescent, where she hoped the work she did in genetic engineering would someday help people like Neil. A chance encounter with someone who her mother knew all those years ago makes Amy wonder what Nancy Candler is not telling her. The bitter tale of betrayal that unfolds before her could cost Amy her freedom - and possibly even her life. This was one of my favorite books in the Replica series. It further explored Amy's roots as a clone, explained her mother's motivation in working for the project and then doing everything in her power to cover it up, and just how Nancy Candler came to adopt Amy as her own daughter. A must read for all Replica fans.

Before . . .
By Alex
Amy Candler's seventh grade class is going on their annual class trip, and they have gotten a grant that allows them to travel anywhere in the United States. Amy suggests Washington DC, interested in seeing the place where she was created, the place where scientists, including her 'mother', lives were changed forever. Where it all started, the terror and secrets that have been a part of Amy #7's, a clone, life as long as she has been alive.
As well as the story of Amy's trip, we get an insight on Nancy Chandler's life, and why she started working for Project Crescent. Her hopes that her work would someday benefit people like her brother, who's dying from a genetic disease, set her on the path that created the clones. But after meeting another person who worked with the project so many years ago, Amy begins to wonder just how much Nancy has told her . . . and questions her trust in the one person she always thought she'd be safe with.
I thought The Beginning was a thrilling read, a book not to be missed by Replica fans. It tells you the full story of Amy's beginning, and the evil leaders of Project Crescent, and is very exciting.

From Science to Business: Preparing Female Scientists and Engineers for Successful Transitions into Entrepreneurship: Summary of a Workshop

Scientists, engineers, and medical professionals play a vital role in building the 21st- century science and technology enterprises that will create solutions and jobs critical to solving the large, complex, and interdisciplinary problems faced by society: problems in energy, sustainability, the environment, water, food, disease, and healthcare. As a growing percentage of the scientific and technological workforce, women need to participate fully not just in finding solutions to technical problems, but also in building the organizations responsible for the job creation that will bring these solutions to market and to bear on pressing issues. To accomplish this, it is important that more women in science and engineering become entrepreneurs in order to start new companies; create business units inside established organizations, mature companies, and the government; and/or function as social entrepreneurs focused on societal issues. Entrepreneurship represents a vital source of change in all facets of society, empowering individuals to seek opportunity where others see insurmountable problems.

From Science to Business: Preparing Female Scientists and Engineers for Successful Transitions into Entrepreneurship is the summary of an August 2009 workshop that assesses the current status of women undertaking entrepreneurial activity in technical fields, to better understand the nature of the barriers they encounter, and to identify what it takes for women scientists and engineers to succeed as entrepreneurs. This report focuses on women's career transitions from academic science and engineering to entrepreneurship, with a goal of identifying knowledge gaps in women's skills as well as experiences crucial to future success in business and critical for achieving leadership positions in entrepreneurial organizations.

From Science to Business makes the case that in addition to educating women scientists and engineers in rigorous problem solving, it is equally important to provide exposure and training to impart the skills that will enable more women to move from the role of expert to that of leader in dynamic new business enterprises. This book will be of interest to professionals in both academia and industry, graduate and post-graduate students, and organizations that advocate for a stronger economy.

Sharia Versus Freedom: The Legacy of Islamic Totalitarianism, by Andrew G. Bostom

Author Andrew G. Bostom expands upon his two previous groundbreaking compendia, The Legacy of Jihad and The Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism, with this collection of his own recent essays on Sharia - Islamic law. The book elucidates, unapologetically, Sharia's defining Islamic religious principles and the consequences of its application across space and time, focusing upon contemporary illustrations.

A wealth of unambiguous evidence is marshaled, distilled, and analyzed, including: objective, erudite studies of Sharia by leading scholars of Islam; the acknowledgment of Sharia's global "resurgence," even by contemporary academic apologists for Islam; an abundance of recent polling data from Muslim nations and Muslim immigrant communities in the West confirming the ongoing, widespread adherence to Sharia's tenets; the plaintive warnings and admonitions of contemporary Muslim intellectuals - freethinkers and believers, alike - about the incompatibility of Sharia with modern, Western-derived conceptions of universal human rights; and the overt promulgation by authoritative, mainstream international and North American Islamic religious and political organizations of traditional, Sharia-based Muslim legal systems as an integrated whole (i.e., extending well beyond mere "family-law aspects" of Sharia).

Johannes J. G. Jansen, Professor for Contemporary Islamic Thought Emeritus at Utrecht University, says this book "will prove sobering to even staunch optimists."

Review
"No one writes with greater authority about the totalitarian current that is inseparable from Islam than Andrew Bostom. Accommodationists will not like what he says because it violates the liberal narrative according to which Islam is a 'religion of peace.' Would that it were so. That fantasy cannot survive exposure to the historical record, which Bostom has plumbed with relentless intelligence and unswerving commitment to the truth. This is an uncomfortable but necessary book. The first step in solving a problem is acknowledging that there is a problem. Sharia Versus Freedom is an indispensable aid to that remedial enlightenment." --Roger Kimball, author of Tenured Radicals: How Politics Has Corrupted Higher Education, and The Fortunes of Permanence: Culture and Anarchy in an Age of Amnesia

"This is damn powerful stuff and needs to be read by anyone who still believes that a rapprochement with religio-political Islam is possible. Readers will be in for a few surprises, too, as some heretofore immaculate scholarly figures come in for their lumps. It is no blurb-like cliché to say that Sharia versus Freedom is a work of critical importance in today's turbulent political climate and goes a long way toward dispelling the myopia with which the Sharia is generally viewed. With this, his third book in an 'encylopedic' series, Bostom has taken his place beside such major scholars of Islam as Ibn Warraq, Robert Irwin, and Bat Ye'or." --David Solway, poet, literary critic and author of The Big Lie: On Terror, Antisemitism, and Identity

"Regarding the subject of Islam, apologists frequently vilify and marginalize truth seekers. Yet Dr. Andrew Bostom is fearless and now provides a third scholarly historical compendium of valuable articles on Islam's totalitarian nature and its harsh Sharia—all of which unfortunately validate my life experience as a Muslim growing up in a Muslim country. With undeniable chronological data, Bostom covers much of what too many Western leaders and journalists willfully ignore: from the dhimmi status of non-Muslims to the combined effects of jihadism, and the Antisemitic Islamic motifs, all distressing realities with which I am, through life experiences, intimately familiar. Those who dodge Islam's intolerable and discriminatory doctrine—whether for political reasons, professional expediency or naked fear—also choose, to their own detriment, to facilitate the decline of Western civilization." --Wafa Sultan, author of A God Who Hates

"It would be a source of great joy if some of the reports on the contemporary application of the Sharia, Islamic law, Dr. Andrew Bostom describes in this book, are inaccurate. His meticulous documentation of this phenomenon, however, will prove sobering to even staunch optimists—and should be obligatory reading for all who care about Western freedom, and Western understanding of the rule of law." --Johannes J. G. Jansen, Houtsma Professor for Contemporary Islamic Thought Emeritus, Utrecht University, and author of The Dual Nature of Islamic Fundamentalism

"Indefatigable Andrew Bostom ventures anew into the field of Islam, in which he is supposedly not a specialist, only to accomplish what devoted and committed lifetime professionals did not. After Jihad and Antisemitism in Islam, which have engendered the international terrorism of the past two decades, Bostom now finds that the issue most urgently provocative to deal with is the challenge that Sharia Law has been posing to the countries in the West where Muslim minorities have taken asylum, and where their demands have been ever pressing to adopt the Sharia on a par with the local legal systems. Everyone understands, perhaps save the Archbishop of Canterbury, what a subversive and destructive effect this might have on the legal traditions of those host societies which have accorded the Muslims shelter out of human compassion, and are now asked pitilessly and arrogantly to forego their own civilization in order to accommodate that of their guest." --Raphael Israeli, professor of Islamic, Middle Eastern, and Chinese Studies Emeritus, and author of Islamikaze: Manifestations of Islamic Martyrology, and Muslim Minorities in Modern States: The Challenge of Assimilation

"In his new book, Sharia Versus Freedom: The Legacy of Islamic Totalitarianism, Andrew Bostom has once again given us an impeccably researched, authoritative study of the impact of Islam on the non-Islamic world. Instead of the misleading assurances of Islam's peaceful nature, Bostom has demonstrated how, from its inception, Islam has used both subversion and conquest to achieve its goal of universal global dominion and the humiliating subordination of those non-Muslims who surrendered to it. This book is indispensable reading for all leaders, both public and private, committed to the survival of Western civilization." --Richard Rubenstein, Lawton Distinguished Professor of Religion Emeritus, Florida State University, and author of The Cunning of History, and Jihad and Genocide

"Andrew Bostom has already edited two highly valuable, extended anthologies on Islam. This new monumental collection of his own essays, Sharia versus Freedom, boldly addresses the most important topic of the twenty-first century, and should be widely read, and heeded." --Bat Ye'or, author of The Decline of Eastern Christianity Under Islam, and Eurabia: The Euro-Arab Axis

"It is a sine qua non of good medical practice that unpleasant symptoms must first be acknowledged and brought into the light before an effective treatment plan can be developed. In Sharia Versus Freedom, Andrew Bostom exposes to the light the condition known as 'sharia,' in all its profuse diversity. This treasure trove is a stirring antidote to the epidemic of ill-founded wishful thinking about Islam that plagues our age. From female genital mutilation to restrictions on freedom of speech, Bostom's relentless forensic analyses will disturb those whose minds are drugged by the mirage of wishful, eyes-closed thinking. To be real, hope must speak the truth: it is for this reason that Bostom's collection of essays makes a major contribution to forging a better future for us all." --Mark Durie, theologian, and author of The Third Choice: Islam, Dhimmitude and Freedom

"The brave and stalwart Andrew Bostom will change the way you look at our future. Every citizen interested in Western survival should read this book." --Giulio Meotti, journalist with Il Foglio, and author of A New Shoah: The Untold Story of Israel's Victims of Terrorism

"Beltway elites, pseudoscholars, and mainstream media mavens would have us believe that Islamic doctrine and Islamic terrorism have no correlation. Andrew Bostom knows better. For the better part of a decade, Bostom has shown, through a series of brilliant essays, that the driving force behind Islamic jihad is not poverty or occupation, but core Islamic teachings. In Sharia versus Freedom, Bostom, a true 'Watchman on the Wall', fearlessly dissects the end game after all the terror: the totalitarian system known as Islamic sharia law. America, you ve been warned." --Erick Stakelbeck, Host, CBN's Stakelbeck on Terror, and author of The Terrorist Next Door: How the Government Is Deceiving You about the Islamist Threat

"In the years since 9/11, while Islamic Studies professors have continued to whitewash the religion of peace, responsible-minded men and women outside of the Islamic Studies racket have taken up the job of truth-telling, publishing a number of substantial, and in some cases encyclopedic, volumes about Islam. One thinks, for example, of Andrew Bostom, a physician and professor of medicine at Brown University, who in the last few years has somehow found the time to produce massive, definitive books about the history of jihad and the legacy of Islamic Antisemitism." --Bruce Bawer, author of While Europe Slept: How Radical Islam Is Destroying the West from Within, and Surrender: Appeasing Islam, Sacrificing Freedom

"This unique collection of essays on Sharia, Islamic Law, contains the most brilliant dissection of exactly what constitutes the meaning and practice of Sharia relative to all previous books written on the same subject. Because of a broad disinformation campaign waged by members of Muslim Brotherhood front groups in the United States and abetted by the collusion of the elite leftwing mainstream media, the public is being subjected to a steady diet of deliberate disinformation that Sharia is democratic and nonauthoritarian. As this book so eloquently demonstrates, nothing could be further from the truth. As Muslim populations continue to burgeon in Europe and North America, there has been a corresponding effort to get judges and magistrates to allow the application of Sharia in intra-Muslim disputes instead of applying Western democratic law. Already in the United Kingdom, there are some 100 Sharia courts. Sharia versus Freedom exposes in incontrovertible detail the truth about Sharia, a draconian and authoritarian set of Muslim laws that was created following the death of Mohammed by his followers as Islam began to massively expand its domain throughout the world. The true nature of Sharia's authoritarianism (which allows amputation of limbs, the stoning of women, and the execution of Muslims who convert to another religion) is explained and detailed (with abundant proof) like no other book before. This book is a 'must-read' for American policymakers, Congress, local and regional authorities from coast to coast, as well as for any member of the public who truly seeks the truth behind Sharia. It makes for fascinating reading for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge of the history and unfolding of the Islamic legal system. Once you pick up this book, you won't put it down." --Steven Emerson, journalist, and author of American Jihad: The Terrorists Living Among Us, Jihad Incorporated: A Guide to Militant Islam in the US

Overarching and complete
By Alyssa A. Lappen
In this overarching analysis, Bostom provides an engrossing and encyclopedic catalog of ideology and history of the naked totalitarianism of Islamic religious and political doctrines -- a diametric opposite to free Western social structure. Sharia prohibits political freedoms, freedoms of conscience, faith, and expression (both oral and written). As applied throughout its history and expressed in internal jurisprudence, Bostom shows, Mohammed's intractable creed suppressed and oppressed all with whom it interacted -- especially non-Muslims.

Intrinsically totalitarian jihadist and Islamic canon neither concerns nor governs only "believers." By Muslim belief, according to scholar Joseph Schacht (d. 1969), the "clear path to be followed" establishes divine, global Islamic order and cannot "be penetrated by the intelligence ... i.e., man has to accept it without criticism." It governs Muslims, and also "activities of the tolerated members of other faiths so far as they may not be detrimental to Islam."

Sharia code requires Muslims to mount regular jihad attacks on unvanquished non-Muslims and permanently, deliberately humiliate "inferior" jihad survivors. Their incorporation into Islamic polity subjects non-Muslims to sharia (pp. 110-112) and its inheritance statutes, requirements and prohibitions and draconian hadd penalties --- including death (by stoning) for adultery, apostasy, and highway robbery (whose victim was murdered); loss of limbs for simple robbery; loss of right hand for simple theft; 100 lashes for "fornication" and 80 lashes for wine drinking. Muslims understand sharia, tracing to Quran passages (like 45:18, 42:13, 42:21, and 5:48) and other Islamic texts, primarily hadith (Mohammed's reputed sayings and deeds) -- as "the totality of Allah's commandments" governing man, Schacht notes.

Islam cements "religion" to its 7th century totalitarian dogma, Bostom shows. For openers, while the Arabic word "hurriyya" translates to "freedom," it refers to "freedom as perfect slavery to Allah," as prescribed by highly dogmatic sharia laws engineered by the same dictatorial chief (Mohammed said, by divine instructions delivered via the angel Gabriel). It means something diametrically opposite to the same word in English -- study of which is now off limits for U.S. military and security officials.

Like Bostom's two previous landmark studies on Islamic jihad and antisemitism, his third adds significantly to our knowledge base. Often, contemporary scholars contend that Islam grew hateful upon absorbing Nazi anti-Semitism in the 20th century. Yet even in the Nazi era, Bostom shows, intellectual luminaries saw the truth as quite opposite. Like "Islam of old," noted a Protestant theologian Karl Barth in 1939, National Socialism's political experiment promised to those willing to participate; but when resisted, it could "only crush and kill." Nazism was best understood as "a new Islam, its myth a new Allah and Hitler as this new Allah's Prophet."

Terror also pervaded "heavenly," peaceful Andalusia. Spain's purportedly enlightened Umayyad conquerors were notoriously brutal, and established fierce, "immobile" Malikite Sunni doctrine and that "suspected and condemned in advance for the slightest attempt at rational speculation" (p. 368). In 1914, Miguel Asin Palacois saw Muslim Spain similarly, as had Cordovan "scholar of Spain par excellence" Ibn Habib (d. 853) and his student Muslim al-Kinani (d. 901), the latter noting that Jews must wear patches bearing the image of an ape, and Christians, patches picturing a pig. (pp. 368-375).

In Granada, Jewish viziers appointed to protect their community were assassinated between 1056 and 1066, after which a fiery anti-Jewish "ode" by Muslim jurist and poet Abu Ishaq filtered through Muslim Granada that very possibly incited the Muslim pogrom that then annihilated Granada's entire Jewish population of up to 5,000 -- as many or more than the number of Jewish people reportedly killed during the First Crusade's pillage of the Rhineland some thirty years later (pp. 176-177).

In Ottoman Turkey 400 years later, celebrated Hanafi jurist and court cleric Molla Khosrew (d. 1480) rested his jihad directives on Islamic totalitarian dogmas. Based on Q 9:5 and Q 9:29, Khosrew instructs, religious obligation (fard al-kifaya) requires jihad, which one must "begin the fight against the enemy, even when he [the enemy] may not have taken the initiative to fight." (p. 178).

In 1948, English-speaking Arab League Office member Aboul Saud described Islam to investigative journalist John Ray Carlson as "a religious form of State Socialism," granting the state "the right to nationalize industry, distribute land, or expropriate" those rights and property. (p. 256). After interviewing Muslim Brotherhood founder Hassan al Banna, Carlson understood the sensational MB rise and near universal popularity of Nazism in Egypt. Average Egyptians, he concluded, "worshiped the use of force" since "terror was synonymous with power."

The Ottoman empire's 1918 demise only raised Muslim fervor for a new, stronger translational religious superstate -- and with it, individual and Islamic societal yearning for a totalitarian, sharia-based cultural regimen, including discriminatory governance of non-Muslims.

A 1979 treatise on jihad by Pakistani Brigadier S.K. Malik reflected bedrock Islamic ideology and its preface described the "bipolarized" Islamic world view designed by Hanafi school founder Abu Hanifa (d. 767) -- of "two opposing camps-- Darul-Salam (Islam) facing Darul-Harb," one submissive, the second "engaged in perpetuating defiance" of Allah (p. 201). Muslim historian and Quranic commentator Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari (d. 923) cites Hanafi, "affirming the impunity with which non-combatant `harbis' -- women, children, the elderly, the mentally or physically disabled -- may be killed" (p. 62).

Modern Muslim jurists also espouse foundational doctrines, Bostom shows. In July 2003, revered "moderate" Muslim Brotherhood spiritual leader chief Yusef Qaradawi approved pillage, noting that "Islamic law [determined] the blood and property of the people of Dar al-Harb [the Domain of Disbelief where the battle for domination of Islam should be waged] is not protected." All Muslims should mobilize, aid war and provide its "material and human fuel..." (p. 64).

Muslim public opinion avidly supports such views. An April 2007 University of Maryland/ WorldPublicOpinion.org survey of 4,384 recent interviews with Muslims reported, nearly 2/3 (2,872) wanted: "To unify all Islamic countries into a single Islamic state or Caliphate"; 65.5% also wanted "every Islamic country" to require "strict application of Shari'a law."

A Dec. 2010 Pew poll in Egypt, Pakistan, Jordan, and Nigeria also documented support for hadd punishments: 82% of Egyptians and Pakistanis wanted adulterers stoned, as did 70% in Jordan and 56% in Nigeria; 82% of Pakistanis, 77% of Egyptians, 65% of Nigerians, and 58% of Jordanians supported whipping and amputation for theft. Most Muslims also want execution for apostates (Jordan, 86%; Egypt, 84%; Pakistan, 76%; Nigeria, 51%). A concurrent secret cable from London's U.S. Embassy revealed of 600 British Muslim students polled, 40% want to replace British law with sharia.

An Expose' For The Ages
By JOHN L WORK
Should books which critically examine Islam's doctrines still be in existence one-hundred years from now - granted the Third Wave of Jihad currently in progress be somehow prevented from burning all of them - Andrew Bostom's new #1 best-seller Sharia Versus Freedom will surely be the subject of discussion among the future's brightest scholars and historians, as they examine (and wonder) how the Free World managed to dodge Muhammad's well-aimed bullet.

From Islamic law's history of barbaric treatment of non-Muslim men and all women, to the relentelss, gradual invasion of its tentacles into the very foundations of present-day America's culture, Bostom turns a blinding floodlamp of truth onto a subject that Western Journalists and political leaders abjectly refuse to acknowledge - the brutal realities of Sharia and why it is irreconcilable with our civilization.

With a command of the English language surpassed by few, Dr. Bostom walks his readers through astonishing barriers to truth which have been erected by such famous men as Fox News' Bill O'Reilly (chapter 31). The title of the chapter is Educating Bill O'Reilly on the Rape Factor in Islam. During a televised O'Reilly Factor interview with author Wafa Sultan (A God Who Hates), Sultan stated:

"Any sexual activity is considered the given right of a male...A Muslim woman cannot report being raped because she will be asked to provide four witnesses otherwise she will be accused of committing adultery, and she will be stoned to death..."

O'Reilly's response?

"I find it hard to believe that the prophet Muhammad would preach a doctrine where any woman can be abused at any time by any Muslim man and be held not accountable."

Indeed. This blind refusal to examine the historical evidence, and summary dismissal of the same, by a reporter with an international following is but one example among many similar issues that Bostom incisively addresses. He's taken on an immense mission - to enlighten citizens of free nations who are unknowingly in grave jeopardy of losing their freedoms to Muslim law. And I can't think of anyone who is more up to the task than Andrew Bostom, M.D.

Bostom's prior work The Legacy of Jihad provided an indipensable historical foundation for my third book, A Summons To Perdition. Sharia Versus Freedom is available at Amazon Books. I highly recommend its addition to your personal library.

With Surgical Precision...

Dr. Bostom dissects analyzes and in the process taught me to reconsider the idea 'shari'a is just like Amercan legal system'. The answer is a resounding NO! Shari'a originates from the moslem view there are two types of people, moslems and non-moslems. Since the koran says the moslems are the best of people, it stands to reason non-moslems are the 'worst of people'. That being true, they have no right to expect to be treated as moslems are in the legal system. This being true, there is no guilt in killing them.

Einstein on the Road, by Josef Eisinger

At the height of his fame, Albert Einstein traveled throughout the world, from Japan to South America and many places in between. During these voyages, between 1922 and 1933, he was in the habit of keeping travel diaries in which he recorded his impressions of people and events, as well as his musings on everything from music and politics to quantum mechanics and psychoanalysis. These fascinating records
are now here published in thier entirety, painting an engaging personal portrait of Einstein the man.

The author has created a vivid and entertaining narrative that brings Einstein’s voice to the fore. During Einstein’s travels far and wide, he meets with royalty, presidents, movie stars, and artists—Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin, Fritz Kreisler, and Sinclair Lewis, as well as the most eminent scientists of the time, including Niels Bohr, Max Planck, Erwin Schrödinger, and Edwin Hubble.

In his travel entries, we read his candid impressions of the Far East during a long sea voyage to Japan (1922), where Einstein is welcomed with enormous enthusiasm, and steals the show at an imperial reception. He and Elsa visit and explore many Japanese cities, as well as Singapore, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Barcelona, Madrid, and Jerusalem, where Einstein cogitates on Zionism and sees it in action.

In 1931, the couple spends eight weeks in Pasadena, where Einstein enjoys fruitful interactions with scientists at Caltech and the Mount Wilson observatory. This portion of the diaries contains illuminating observations about America, science, and the Hollywood celebrities he encounters. He returns to Caltech two more times, and enjoys two extended sojourns in another academic sanctuary, Oxford University. Back at home in Berlin, his diary shows his deep involvement with the academic, social, and cultural life of the German capital, and with the politics of the Weimar Republic. He discusses books, dinner parties, plays, concerts, and sailing, but his greatest passion, apart from physics, is music; he is never happier than when playing chamber music, preferably Mozart—and he does so at every opportunity.

A lifelong pacifist, he watches the rise of the Nazis with anxiety, and when Hitler gains control in 1933, he renounces pacifism and searches for a place of refuge. He finds it in Princeton, New Jersey, where he joins the newly created Institute for Advanced Study and becomes an American, never more to roam.

Filled with memorable vignettes, this singular book provides a window into the thoughts and opinions of the twentieth century’s most celebrated scientist and allows us to share in his exhilarating experiences.

Review
"Just when one thinks that one has read every possible book about Einstein there comes along the new and delightful Einstein on the Road by the physicist Josef Eisinger. Once Einstein became famous he was invited to make several visits to places like Japan and Uruguay. He kept a diary that makes it clear that these trips were no picnic. Apart from the lectures, he was expected to appear at all sorts of social functions and wear the dreaded tuxedo. He was also ‘graded’ by the local German consuls who gave him high marks for exporting German culture. This was at the time when he was being vilified in Germany. The book is full of surprises and is a pleasure to read."
—Jeremy Bernstein, Author of Quantum Leaps

"‘The road is life,’ said Jack Kerouac, and here, as Einstein hits the road, life as he had not seen it before unfolds in front of him. As the newly famous physicist embarks on travels that take him from Europe to Palestine, Princeton, and Pasadena; from Ceylon to Singapore; and to Argentina, Japan, China, and other exotic places, we see Einstein amused, awed, and sometimes appalled as he absorbs what he sees around him and faithfully reveals his thoughts to his closest travel companion, his travel diary. In this book, Josef Eisinger brings us a delightful addition to the ever-expanding genre of Einstein studies."
—Alice Calaprice, Author of The Ultimate Quotable Einstein and Dear Professor Einstein: Letters to and from Children

"Einstein was a keen, sometimes caustic, observer of the world around him, and his travel diaries are a fascinating portal into a neglected part of his life. In vivid language and without being intrusive, Professor Eisinger has captured the elusive charm of Einstein’s prose."
—Robert Schulmann, Longtime director of the Einstein Papers Project at Boston University

"Josef Eisinger has uncovered an intriguing fragment of history here—the triumphal, wandering years of 1921–1933 during which Einstein and his wife were feted on four continents and in more than a dozen countries. He uses to the hilt witty and insightful commentaries from Einstein’s voluminous diaries. His wanderlust was compounded of the need to escape from the dangers and disturbances of that period in Germany, his love of long sea voyages seen as relaxing work opportunities, his insatiable curiosity about the world, and his desire to further humanitarian causes. But, finally, Einstein found in Princeton, when matters in Germany came to a head, the quiet backwater that he needed, and he stayed there for good after 1933. This may be the most delightful way ever to learn all that one really needs to know about Einstein."
—Philip Anderson, Recipient of the 1977 Nobel Prize in Physics

Fascinating exploration of an iconic figure
By JoAnne Goldberg
Albert Einstein. Here's what most of us know: crazy eyebrows, wild hair. Brainiac. Father of relativity. E=mc2. And...didn't he flunk out of school or something?

Thanks to Einstein on the Road, I am now on a first-name basis with Al. I learned that he loved to hike, brought his violin to dinner parties (and was expected to play it), happily spent weeks at a time aboard various ships, and kept a detailed journal, which is how those of us peeking back into the 20th century can learn about his non-science-related activities.

The book isn't just about the man, but about an era. A time when a business trip could consume six months, physicists were treated like celebrities, and even a famous scientist could not easily extricate himself from the Nazis. Einstein managed to do so, settling in Princeton in 1933 and ending his "on the road" decade.

The amount of primary source material in this book makes it a must-read for any Einstein fans, but it will also fascinate anyone intrigued by the world of the intelligentsia in the 1920s or the culture of that period from the perspective of an observant traveler who made the rounds and kept precise records.

Einstein's private side
By weekend
Although this is a very unusual look at Einstein's private life, it's also a fascinating review of what was happening in physics against the background of a Germany that was undergoing the crisis that transformed it into the fascist killing machine it was to become.

From School Library Journal
Gr 4–8—A first-rate biography of an American legend. In the author's note, Denenberg states that the story of Muhammad Ali has, over time, been "transformed into something easily digestible and unthreatening," but promises to "reveal the true story of Muhammad Ali" through this thorough recount of Ali's life. Starting when Ali (then Cassius Clay) was 12, the book relates his commitment to the sport, describing how after school was over, the boy worked until 6 pm, then trained until midnight. Denenberg also talks about Ali's endless badgering of his opponents, for example, showing up at opponent Sonny Liston's house in the middle of the night, "daring him to…have a go right then and there." Interspersed throughout is information about the turmoil of the time period, such as African Americans' fight for desegregation and equality. There's also material on the Vietnam War and how Ali reacted by joining the Nation of Islam, changing his name from Cassius Clay; his refusal to enter the army; and his association with civil rights leader Malcolm X. Most of the engaging narrative is done in the format of newspaper articles, man on the street interviews, and breaking news transmissions, all created by the author. Denenberg does an excellent job of capturing the era, and this book will serve as a gateway to discussions and lessons about this time in American history.—Stephanie Farnlacher, Trace Crossings Elementary School, Hoover, AL

Out of Silence: A Pianist's Yearbook, by Susan Tomes

Out of Silence is a diary of a year in Susan Tomes's life as a performer. Taking as its inspiration Schumann's remark that 'I am affected by everything that goes on in the world, and I think itall over in my own way', it aims to show how a working musician mulls over and draws energy from the events of everyday life. We follow this internationally renowned pianist as she prepares for concerts and performs, both as a soloist and as part of a chamber ensemble; we experience the highs and lows of practising and the challenges of live performance, we see her planning masterclasses and interacting with both musicians and audiences. She casts her mind back to her childhood - practicing before school on cold Edinburgh mornings, playing 'Danny Boy' for a relative - and reflectson paintings, dance, books, sport and gardening. 'A delight and a revelation...She writes with Schubertian intimacy, modesty and grace,' said the Independent of her first book, Beyond the Notes. Here Susan Tomes strives to unlock the secrets of great music and to understand its place in the wider world. SUSAN TOMES has won a number of awards for her recordingsof chamber music. For fifteen years she was the pianist of Domus, and for another fifteen she has been the pianist of the Florestan Trio, one of the world's leading piano trios. She is the author of Beyond the Notes and A Musician's Alphabet. She writes occasionally for the Guardian and on a blog on her own website, www.susantomes.com.

Review
The Japanese translation of Out of Silence has been chosen as one of the best books of 2012 by Chopin magazine, Japan. With a sure literary touch, that outstanding pianist and educator Susan Tomes (takes) us inside the world of the over-worked, under-valued classical player in 'Out of Silence'. I wish idiots who bleat about the 'elitism' of the classical tradition could at least pick up this generous, friendly, revealing diary of a year's hard slog. THE INDEPENDENT, Best Books for Christmas 2010 feature A distinguished performer who writes with penetration, fluency and charm...Tomes has the unique gift of answering questions about the musical life that every other literary register seems to overlook. A supreme chamber performer, she writes with all the qualities of her chosen field: intimate, exact, conversational; a style of mutual respect...Open this insightful and delightful book on any page, and learn with pleasure. INDEPENDENTSusan Tomes has contributed two remarkably probing books, Beyond the Notes and Out of Silence, to the literature (of performers writing about their craft). GUARDIAN (Simon Callow)There have been books about the experience of playing...but none by so naturally gifted a writer as Tomes...(who) has a particular understanding of humanity rare in writing about music. TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENTPacked full of fascinating material reflecting upon the difficult and sometimes intangible issues that face a busy professional pianist...what emerges from these pages is Tomes's strong sense of humility, her quirky humour, and above all her tremendous love and driving enthusiasm for her work...a compelling read. BBC MUSICTomes joins that small band of musicians whose literary skill runs parallel to their musical talent...(she) extracts on almost every page a life lesson for the rest of us, whether or not we are musicians. CLASSIC FM MAGAZINEThis is an essentially practical volume that encapsulates what it is to be a jobbing professional who is sensitive to the interconnectivity of the world at large...by the end, I felt I not only knew more about the author, but also about myself. Highly recommended. INTERNATIONAL PIANOFor a parent with a musically gifted child the collection is essential reading. OLDIE

Tomes/Out of Slence
By SW
Quite simply, this is a superb book.

Susan Tomes is a pianist who writes as well as she plays the piano. On the face of it, I wondered whether a book made up of entries from a performer's diary over a period of a year would be enough to hold my attention from cover to cover. I had read her first book, Beyond the Notes, a few years ago and realized then that I enjoyed her writing almost as much as her playing. The earlier book dealt with her early days as pianist of Domus, a chamber music ensemble, which travelled throughout Britain, performing in a mobile performance space in locations that otherwise might not have hosted a chamber music concert. In that book, she also discussed issues concerning music musicians, and performance and several of the chapters provided much food for though.
Out of Silence is quite different. It is divided into months with several entries for each month, most of which run to about one and a half to two pages. Some are even shorter and one or two reach over three pages. Behind these short essays lies some deep thinking. That does not mean that Ms. Tomes presents heavy philosophical arguments couched in obscurantist language -- quite to the contrary. The book is written in clear English so that everyone can understand exactly what she means. Its objective seems to be to convey to the lay reader some of the trials and tribulations of a performing artist or, as she puts it, a travelling musician though I daresay that professional musicians will find a lot of interest here as well.

One of the criteria I have used for a long time in helping me determine whether a talk or book is interesting is if, during the course of listening or reading, thoughts spring up in my mind on issues that sometimes seem only vaguely related to the theme -- until I reflect on them and then realize what sparked them off. In this case the words in these short pieces definitely caused me to regard some of my own ideas or experiences in a new light.

The topics covered are varied. She writes about individual pieces of music and about working with other musicians. She discusses what a travelling musician does when she finds herself with a day to kill in a strange city between concerts. She relates to the relationship between performers and audiences, about the `status' of classical musicians vis-à-vis wealthy or influential `patrons'. She raises the issue of the inability of many members of the audience who approach a performer after a concert to talk about the music and about their `tongue-tiedness' in general -- and there's much more.

Behind an often chatty façade, each entry comprises issues that are well-thought and each has several layers. The writing is distilled and refined. Each entry is worthy of a second and a third read, and each reading brings forth other issues that you hadn't noticed the first time around. And the wonderful thing is that each piece is short enough to be able to do this easily.

If you want to learn something of a musician's life, of the relationship between an artist and her/his colleagues and audiences then this is wonderful place to start for Susan Tomes is an accomplished writer -- as skilled a writer as she is a musician.

It's the best read I've had on topics concerning music and musicians in years.

This Book Hits the Right Notes
By Marjan V. Kiepura
Having read Susan Tomes' book "Beyond the Notes" and now "Out of Silence", I am once again struck by her ability to discuss the classical music profession realistically and honestly and to do so in a totally entertaining way. Being a pianist myself, I find Ms. Tomes to be a soul searching individual of considerable depth. While she shares her experiences as a successful pianist, she opens up to real things happening to real people, herself included. Her ultimate goal is to find meaningful and lasting artistry in the truest sense, and the ardent trials that come with it. The book consists of short essays that range from comical to profoundly moving experiences. I recommend this book to any musician, not just pianists. It's a really good read.

Perceptive and honest
By Daphnis 176
Exceptionally revealing — presented in an elegant yet very accessible style. Anyone who admires the arts, and classical music specifically, will find a wealth of intriguing insights into real-life situations of a highly skilled and very sensitive performer. A very refreshing change from "tell-all" books and/or idealized abstractions about what the arts should be. Having been a professional performing musician for 44 years, Ms. Tomes' observations and commentary resonates deeply with my own experiences.
