Escape one danger. Jump into another. . . .

“Eddleman brings a strong sense of atmosphere to this post-apocalyptic coming-of-age piece, and the underlying message—that it’s possible to contribute in unexpected ways—is a positive one.” —Publishers Weekly

Twelve-year-old Hope lives in White Rock, a town of inventors struggling to recover from the green bombs of World War III. But Hope is terrible at inventing and would much rather sneak off to cliff dive into the Bomb’s Breath—the deadly band of compressed air that covers the crater left by the bombs—than fail at yet another invention. When bandits discover that White Rock has priceless antibiotics, they invade. With a two-day deadline to finish making this year’s batch and no ingredients to make more, the town is left to choose whether to hand over the medicine and die from the disease that’s run rampant since the bombs, or die fighting the bandits now. Help lies in a neighboring town, but the bandits count everyone fourteen and older each hour. Hope and her friends Aaren and Brock might be the only ones who can escape to make the dangerous trek through the Bomb’s Breath and over the snow-covered mountain. For once, inventing isn’t the answer, but the daring and recklessness that usually get Hope into trouble might just save them all.

Gr 5-7-In 2069, Earth is partially destroyed by the detonation of 27 green bombs that leave behind a pocket of dense oxygen molecules potent enough to kill any creature that inhales them. Twelve-year-old Hope lives in one of the few safe areas of fertile land that still remain. This life-threatening pocket of air, known as the Bomb's Breath, has blocked all magnetic forces, causing many of the technological advancements of the early 21st century to disappear. Now the mostly agrarian society puts heavy emphasis on people to invent useful gadgets to improve on the quality of life, but Hope has no skills in this area. The only thing that she is good at is jumping through the Bomb's Breath, a secret she has shared only with her friend Aaron. At a council meeting, the citizens of White Rock are told that the Bomb's Breath, besides being a danger, has also served as a deterrent to roving groups of bandits from looting their town. When some thieves break through these protective perimeters to hold the town hostage for a rare antibiotic they have invented, Hope's father is injured in the process. The antibiotic is the only cure for Shadel's Sickness, a contagious disease developed as an offshoot of the war. Besides her dad needing the medicine to stave off the infection from his injury, the entire community needs it to survive the next year. Help from the neighboring communities is mandatory before time runs out, so Hope, along with some friends, carries off a daring and dangerous escape to run for help. The curriculum strengths of this book include heavy STEM subjects such as chemistry, medical biology, and earth science, as well as the structure of local government and nation building. Students not ready for the violence of The Hunger Games will enjoy the book's adrenaline-rush daredevil adventures in the first installment in this series.-Sabrina Carnesi, Crittenden Middle School, Newport News, VAα(c) Copyright 2013. Why invent when you could hold your breath and be daring?
By H. Bala
My fingers are crossed in hopes that Peggy Eddleman keeps on chronicling the adventures of 12-year-old Hope Toriella. Hope is the pivotal character in Eddleman's debut YA novel, SKY JUMPERS. And, yes, it's another post-apocalyptic tale. And who says history teaches us nothing, eh? When World War II swung around, we the combatants knew enough not to launch nuclear missiles. Oh, no, instead we deployed "green bombs" - so at least we kept it sustainable. Somewhere in what once was Cook, Nebraska, survivors have made a home - have erected a town they've named White Rock - nestled in a circular valley that is actually one of many huge craters formed by the green bombs. Forty years from the founding of White Rock, here's Hope Toriella getting in frequent jams.

In this near future, the green bombs have neutralized all magnetic and electrical devices, regressing the way of life to that of circa the Industrial Revolution. Everyone's back to the drawing board. Today, the populace of White Rock place great emphasis on their ability to invent, to create ways to make this hard life easier. Festivals are held regularly in which adults and children present their inventions.

Hope, to her shame and to the townspeople's disdain, is a crap inventor. Furthermore, she's always taken to task for her risktaking ways. Hope is outdoorsy. She nurses an adventurous streak. And what she loves to do more than anything else is to cliff dive thru the terrifying Bomb's Breath, an inhospitable layer spanning fifteen feet wherein the air (unbreathable) is much denser and so perceptibly slows down a body navigating thru it. Hope loves the sense of flying that her leaps thru the Bomb's Breath give her. No one in White Rock, other than her closest friends, knows that she does this. Plenty of folks have died thru exposure to the toxic Bomb's Breath, yet another fallout of the green bombs.

But when bandits invade the sheltered valley, it's not Hope's inventing but, rather, her bravery and adventurous streak and her knowledge of the Bomb's Breath that may yet save the day. Can she sneak away and negotiate treacherous mountains and a murderous snow storm and alert her town's garrison?

For action junkies, be aware that it takes until almost halfway thru before SKY JUMPERS really spikes up the adrenalin. For characterization junkies, this is a good thing. It means that the author spends that much time establishing her characters and detailing the post-apocalyptic setting. This is a confident piece of work from a writer first time published. And, as with any solid story, both children AND adults can enjoy reading it. Young girls in particular will rally around Hope, a heroine who is spunky and resourceful but who shoulders a certain lack of self-esteem (mostly because of her crap inventing). Hope is accompanied by three friends, and Eddleman nicely develops them as well: her supportive best friend Aaren, the mysterious Brock, and Aaren's 5-year-old tagalong sister Brenna. Note that the violence isn't gratuitous. If anything, it's sanitized. But, no worries, Eddleman doesn't cheat you of excitement and big adventure and last second saves. Who knew Cook, Nebraska could be so exciting?

Good writing, but there were far too many story issues for me.
By Kat Heckenbach
First, let me say that I do totally get the idea of "suspension of disbelief." I read mostly fantasy and sci-fi. The idea of a MG post-apocalyptic (this is NOT a dystopian) was intriguing to me. Right up my alley. But my biggest problem ended up that I simply could not suspend disbelief.

Maybe it's because I have a science background, but I could not get beyond the wonky science of this book. Fine, it's for kids. Here's the issue: The book goes out of it's way to try and explain how and why all this stuff happened, how the Bomb's Breath formed and make it seem plausible. When a book does that, the author needs to make sure the science actually *could* work. Or, leave out all those details.

I could have probably moved past that. Because I do read a lot of MG books. But added to that are the completely unrealistic situations, like 12 yr old Hope traveling out of the town, through a blizzard, *with her mom's permission* and with a boy who only a few weeks before had had his stomach cut so deeply his intestines were nicked. Oh, and his 5-yr-old sister tags along too.

Also, if KIDS can make it through the Bomb's Breath by simply *holding their breath* while walking through it, why is it considered such a strong protective barrier for the town?

I could even have possibly let all that slide if this were not post-apocalyptic, which imho should not be written like some sort of Great Big Fun Adventure.

It also drove me nuts that the whole focus of the town was on inventing things, and the kids weren't allowed to ask for help with theirs? Because teamwork never works, right? Because kids can't learn from parents and need to be made fools of publicly when they fail at something they are not wired for.

And there was no consistency when it came to the level of technology these people understood and had. They needed to invent potato peelers, but they have guns? And while this is post-apocalyptic, and yes most of the population is gone, there is still *stuff*, things that may not work but are still around, left over, and yet no one is studying them to figure out how to regain the tech. Instead they are all starting from scratch, depending on the inventions of children.

Lastly, none of the characters came to life for me other than the main character, Hope.

All that said, the writing was pretty good. The author did a great job of capturing the voice of a 12 yr old. If the story itself were actually well thought-out I think this is an author I could enjoy reading. Hopefully Mrs. Eddleman will find it in her heart to write a non-science-based adventure story because I would absolutely give her writing another chance in that case.

Imaginative new series
By WeeBeaks
This book is a start of a new series (yippie for series!). It is a creative, imaginative, post-world war/new world story with a daring feminine lead. I really like post WWIII-type literature, when the remaining humans need to recreate their world, and this is a good one. Jumpers in the title refers to jumping off into toxic air left post bombing in their new world, with different chemical and physical properties than air typically would have. Fun "science" is brought into this book, adding to the interest. The author of this one has a community of inventors and creative people, but even so our lead heroine is different from the others. As in a lot of young adult literature, she needs to find the place where she fits into her community in a positive way, where she can be an individual and make a difference. I love how that comes about. I would happily recommend this to middle school readers, including my own sons. It captures the imagination from the very first page. I'll be looking for more in the series for my kids for sure.

This copy I received from netgalley for an honest review.
