An introduction to HWL

I really enjoyed this book! The title is a bit misleading as it seems to imply it is a collection of letters. In fact, it's a biography of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, with children's fan mail spliced in to tell the story. Certainly, it particularly emphasizes his fame with young people, as the title implies, but it really is more of an overview. In fact, it is one of the most accessible and readable introductions to Longfellow and his work that I've read. Children are Pearl's intended audience and, as such, the tone of the book is a bit juvenile (somewhat condescending to adult readers) but if one can accept that tone it's a very much worth reading. For young people, I think it works fairly well too and, I would hope, would inspire further reading of Longfellow's poetry.
