A Perfect Introduction to the World of Philosophy

I am not surprised in the least that the review which preceded mine gave this book by Michael Kellogg five stars. That is my estimate, too. In fact, let me go further--and say straight-out that I know of no finer introduction to the world of philosophy than this compact and marvelously well-written book. With the utmost grace, depth, and clarity, the author succeeds in accomplishing all that one might wish for in such a book: a sense of the major issues in philosophy, joined with a conviction that these issues matter for our lives--really, truly, matter; that they are not arcane "academic debating points." And Kellogg does this by brilliantly juxtaposing the key ideas of (and the key biographical data about)six pivotal figures: Plato, Wittgenstein, Kant, Nietzsche, Aristotle, and Heidegger. And let me tell you--it is not easy to present the thoughts of these men with clarity. (Especially Heidegger!) And Kellogg succeeds. One doesn't need any specialized philosophic background to find this book constantly engaging and fulfilling. It almost reads itself, it is so well written. (And, as I said before, it is compact; the main text is only about 250 pages long--and spaciously printed pages at that). Meanwhile, if you do have philosophic training, you will be in a position to admire the book all the more, because it could only be written by someone who has pondered long, and had the courage to think deeply and precisely about the ultimate issues philosophy has wrestled with throughout its history: the three questions, in fact, to which Michael Kellogg's title refers. The famous three questions of Kant: What Can I Know? What May I Hope? What Should I Do? And let me add just one further note: while the book gives a concentrated introduction to the six (representative) philosophers I mentioned earlier, they are hardly the only ones who appear in the text. More briefly (but just as incisively), Kellogg comments on Socrates, Spinoza, Adam Smith, Leibniz, Descartes, Augustine, Bertrand Russell--and Einstein, to boot! (And there are others.) In conclusion, let me just say, if this book doesn't turn you on to the joys and riches of philosophy, I am not sure any book can! Do I agree with everything the author says? Of course not! (This is part of the joy of philosophy, too). But so thoughtful is Michael Kellogg's writing that even when one finds oneself in disagreement, it is always a respectful disagreement. One senses: "Maybe he's right! Let me think this over again." Which is what first-rate philosophic writing is supposed to do for you. So--to finish up--let me just say BRAVO! And let me hope this book reaches thoughtful people everywhere--in and outside the academic world.

Deep thoughts

This book performs a great service in that it makes some of the most impenetrable writings of great philosophers such as Neitszche, Wittgenstein and Heidegger accessible to the general reader -- without oversimplifying them. Kellogg has the rare gift of explaining the arcane in an entertaining way. He is particularly good at setting each of the leading philosophers in their historical context, illuminating the social pressures they faced without covering up any moral failings. A worthwhile read for the amateur or professional.

A Must Read for All Who Love to Learn

The concept of reading a book examining great philosophical questions can be intimidating for the non-philospher but Michael Kellogg's new book, Three Questions We Never Stop Asking, makes the subject both interesting and digestible. Nothwithstanding the tomes that have been written over the years, Mr. Kellogg distills the essence of philosophical thought to 3 deceptively simple questions-- What Can I Know, What May I Hope and What Should I Do? This approach is fleshed out by presenting each question through the perspective of two philosophers. Thus, in the course of the book, we learn how Plato and Wittgenstein would answer "What Can I Know," and why Kant and Nietzsche find completely different roles for God in "What May I Hope" (reflecting the old graffiti "God is dead-Nietzsche" and "Nietzsche is dead-God".). Lastly, Aristotle and Heidegger take on "What Should I Do" by examining our "moral being." Aristotle is concerned with how best to live our lives, having faith in the power of reason to make choices. Heidegger delves into the "mystey of Being" and believes we must constantly reengage with Being to better understand that mystery.
If these analyses of the great philosophers sound too intellectual for the lay reader, be reassured that Mr. Kellogg has the deft ability to bring the human qualities of these philosophers to light (ie.Heidegger's association with the Nazi party, Nietzsche contracting syphilis from brothels, Wittgenstein relaxing by reading detective stories and watching western (i.e cowboy) movies).
With crafty and engaging prose, Mr. Kellogg presents an astonishing amount of material in under 300 pages. His footnotes and Suggestions for Further Reading provide additional outlets for those readers who wish to probe more deeply into the questions and philosophers.
We can only hope that Mr. Kellogg will take on another challenging topic for exploration in his next book so we will be better equipped on our constant journey of self understanding.
