Two clubs, dedicated to proclaiming the joys of libertine sex, thrived in mid and late 18th-century Scotland. The Beggar's Benison (1732), starting from local roots in Fife, became large and sprawling, with branches in Edinburgh, Glasgow - and St Petersburg. As a toast "The Beggar's Benison" was drunk at aristocratic dinners in London as a coded reference to sex, and the Prince of Wales (later George IV) became a member. In Edinburgh, also, the Wig Club (1775) gave the elite of the Scottish Tory establishment a forum in which to dine, gamble and venerate a wig supposedly made of the pubic hairs of the mistresses of Charles II. Both clubs flourished in a great age of raucous clubs in which bawdy often played a prominent part, and both died as changes in sensibility made such behaviour seem gross and unacceptable. As the Victorian age approached, the clubs withered away under its disapproving glare. In this book, the author tells the story of these clubs, analyzes the obscene relics of their rituals which survive, and places the clubs in their social, cultural and political contexts. It is an extensively researched study, but at the same time recognizes the entertainment value of the many anecdotes concerning the clubs, the absurdities inherent in the antics of club rituals, and the appeal of the bawdy.

4.5 Stars for a Thorough Scholarly Work on a Lost Sex Club of Anti-Sexual Times

I read the original 2001 edition. This is the definite source at least till then about the "Beggar's Benison and Merryland" as this naughty men's club was fully named. In case you are wondering what a benison is, this is old English for "blessing", i.e. a sexual euphemism in this case.
While the rest of the Western world had been plunged into an anti-masturbatory frenzy for two decades (which should prevail for some two centuries), some Scots decided to make it, well..., an initiation procedure for new club members. From 1732 to 1836, capping the Victorian Age, some gentlemen in Anstruther near Edingburgh met at completely heterosexual events at which naked young women were inspected, for merely educational purposes I almost presume, and other measures in the realm of free sex.
But the club and the book is about much more. There's an equally important link to free trade. To be translated as smuggling. It is about politics no less. The book also informs in context about the libertinism and so-called enligthenment of the time. Included are 16 pages of black and white pictures of delicate (sexual) antiques produced by the club. The ones which survived the following even more puritan ages. As such, we are informed about the safe-keeping of those items and the eventual rather unlucky attempts of historians to shed some light on this club which had faded into obscurity in the meantime.
The sex club wasn't limited to Anstruther, but had several spin-offs, including in Russia. Also analysed is the similar "Wig Club" (1775-1827), which centered around a fancy head wig made of pubic hairs of famous courtesans. And I thought I had read about everything by now...
I gave this book 4.5 stars. It is worth 5 stars for the specially interested, however I don't feel it to be a potential life changer. A small criticism is the MANY omissions and doublings of words and other typos, including correctly spelled words masquerading for other words, e.g. instead of "further" the reader gets confused with "future". A very poor job of the editor if there ever was one.
