About the Author
Erin Hoffman is the author of Sword of Fire and Sea and Lance of Earth and Sky. She was born in San Diego, California, and now lives with her husband, two parrots, and a dog in the San Francisco bay area. Her college degree was eclectic and landed her in the strange waters of video game design, where she tells stories using a diabolical combination of character, controller, and math. Her games have been played by over four million kids and adults worldwide, and she is a graduate of the Odyssey Fantasy Writers Workshop.

Entrancing story

The first novel of this series was incredible and I had difficulty putting it down. In this, the second in the trilogy, Hoffman has weaved together an entrancing, compelling story with characters that I care about and feel a great deal of affection towards. This is a complete story in and of itself, but if you've read the first the continuation of the major story arc will be welcomed.
If you enjoy any fantasy of any kind, I can not not more heartily recommend this book as well as the original. The world is enticing, lush and magical, the characters teem with personality and the story is extremely well told. If anything, this is a stronger book than the original, and I already can't wait for the third novel.

Strong on Character, but sophomore novel problems

I really wanted to like this second novel in the Chaos Knight fantasy trilogy, and I did, but I couldn't give myself up to Hoffman's choices of plot points and her interweaving of the characters enough to love it. There were several imps I had to stop and try to recall who was who. The book REALLY needs an appendix with a list of characters!
The overall story is advanced well enough, but the other problem I had with the book was not enough information about the rest of the cast as we followed one group. Hoffman writes it well but, for me, she didn't sell it. The novel does link the first book to the third, but it could have done so much more. I do look forward to Hoffman's future work as she matures as a fantasy writer.

engaging fantasy

Captain Vidarian Rulorat desperately opened the gates between worlds (see Sword of Fire and Sea). Now he faces the second order effect as elemental magic is no longer dormant as it had been for centuries. As a consequence of his action, many powerful people like his best friend Ruby died. War between Qui and his homeland Aloria has exploded since leaders in both nations believe the balance of power shifted due to the magic explosion.
The Aloria Emperor orders Vidarian to lead the sky ships in battle against the Qui and to train the demoralized Sky Knights to ride beasts that shapeshift. However, he has two missions besides keeping his country somewhat safe. First he wants his beloved fire priestess Ariadel back in his life and he needs to learn to control his new magical skills. However, Vidarian theorizes the real threat to his empire and their enemy comes from the powerful Alorian Import Company.
The second Chaos Knight fantasy is an engaging thriller that has less action than its predecessor but also provides much more insight into the Hoffman mythos. Although the world contains little freshness, this fast-paced tale will remind readers of the Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar saga as Vidarian's struggles with the moral implications of what he wrought.
